It was their last day in Nicodranas. The next morning, Fjord and Jester would board the Nein Heroez and set sail for whatever destination Orly had chosen for them. Essek would take Caduceus back to the Blooming Grove and visit for a few days. Jasper would return to his studies, his suspension at its end, and Beau would return to her work. Harvest’s Rise was nearly over, so Caleb would resume teaching.

Today, therefore, they spent at the beach.

The morning fell away in fragments. Caleb chatted with Fjord about Kingsley's progress as Plank King. He explained to Jasper and Luc the theory behind the Unseen Servant spell. He stood next to Yeza, watching Veth and Jester make sand angels.

Jasper didn't sleep well that night. Not that he was ever that great of a sleeper, but it was always worse when he had something to worry about. He kept replaying his argument with Caleb. It was maybe five sentences total, but they looped like a music box, over and over, and every time they started to wind down, he cranked them back up again.

He hadn't said it right. Bren deserved to be here, Jasper was sure of that, but he'd put it all wrong. He shouldn't have jumped to accusing like that, he shouldn't have said Caleb and Bren were the same, he should have been nicer. The longer he thought about it, the sicker he felt.

If he were a good person, he'd be worrying about Bren, but mostly, Jasper was just worried that Caleb wouldn't like him anymore. He hadn't even gotten a chance to show him the cantrip he'd learned.

Jasper finally dropped off in the small hours of the morning. When he woke up, he found something entirely new to worry about.

"I'm going on a trip today," Beau said over breakfast. "Me and Caleb will be away for a day or two."

Caleb caught Beau by the arm as they exited the art gallery. She let him pull her to the back of their absurdly large entourage.

"Let's take a walk," he said.

Beau had been looking forward to collapsing in bed, and Caleb looked like he should've been in bed six hours ago. But he had the Serious Talk look on his face, so Beau said, "Yeah, all right," and darted forward to let Yasha know she'd be home later.

The art gallery was in an up-and-coming neighborhood, where trendy cafes and boutiques struggled for space with old hole-in-the-wall restaurants and neighborhood haunts. Going north would take them more firmly into the luxury of the Opal Archways; going south would take them into the slums. Caleb headed south.

Jasper woke up early for his third day of helping Caleb. They weren't even reading the dunamancy research today. All they'd done the day before, and all they planned to do today, was sort the papers into a rough order so that when they finally did start reading, it would make some kind of sense. 

Still, he was excited. Most people didn't sign up for the Cobalt Soul unless there was some part of them that really liked organizing information. And although the Soul had given Jasper plenty of training in sorting and research, he'd never gotten to apply any of it to a real problem. Working with Caleb felt like finally getting to really be a monk. 

The only other person in the house likely to be up at this hour was Beau. He could hear her moving in the kitchen, setting a kettle on the stove and humming something out of key. Maybe if he moved quiet enough, he could get out the door without having to talk to her. He knew the way to Caleb's. There was no reason Jasper couldn't get there on his own. Caleb might even be relieved; he and Beau had been weirdly tense when he stopped by yesterday morning.

Bren was ready to go well before Caleb the next morning. Caleb couldn't imagine he was excited to visit the Cobalt Soul—Ikithon's descriptions of the organization had always been dismissive at best. He guessed that Bren was simply eager to be out of his company. The feeling was mutual.

They ate a much simpler breakfast than the previous days', just barley porridge that Caleb had set to simmer overnight. They didn't look at each other while they ate. The short walk to Beau and Yasha's passed in silence.

Jasper answered the door. "Beau's finishing her coffee. You can come in."

He was doing a bad job of pretending not to stare at Bren. The impulse was entirely understandable, but it made Caleb's skin itch. He did not want Bren in this safe, cheerful home.

"Yasha. Yasha, wake up."

The tone more than the words sank into Yasha's dream, and she woke up already anxious. She instinctively reached for a sword that wasn't there as she opened her eyes. Beau sat cross-legged on the bed. She hadn't lit a lamp, and her eyes were enormous in the darkness.

"What's going on?" Yasha said. "Why aren't you in Port Damali?"

"It's Jasper," Beau said. "He ran away."

Yasha was halfway out bed before Beau caught her. "He's back! Sorry, sorry, he's back already." She eased Yasha back down to sitting. "He took a teleportation circle to Port Damali about an hour ago, but we caught up with him and convinced him to come back."

Yasha couldn’t put into words the fear she felt, waking up and realizing an entire disaster had happened while she was asleep. It was so much like waking up from the Iron Shepherds at Molly's grave. Like waking up from Obann after running through Beau's stomach. Waking up that first morning after leaving Zualla behind, knowing what must have happened.

Jasper’s plan needed three things: time, luck, and a little bit of makeup.

Time was the easiest to come by and the hardest to handle. He just had to wait until nighttime—maybe ten or eleven pm. Just to make it less likely that he’d get caught. Which was fine, as long as he didn’t chew his fingernails off with worry in the meantime.

Luck, of course, he couldn’t do anything about. Jasper knew Bren had been working on the Teleportation Circle spell, and he knew that he’d traveled to Port Damali once before, so there was at least a chance he was familiar with the Cobalt Soul’s circle there. But he might have forgotten it, or he might not have the materials to cast the spell, or he might cast too many other spells today and not have any juice left by the night.

The makeup wasn’t actually necessary. It was more of an insurance plan for if things went wrong. But it was something he could actually do, so after breakfast, when he saw Yasha was busy chatting with Caduceus, Jasper took the opportunity to sneak into her and Beau’s room.

Bren wasn’t sure what he expected of Caleb's friends. He had never been a person with a large circle of friends—he’d always been too busy studying, and the people he was closest to were those who studied with him. He supposed that was also true of Beauregard. 

Whatever he’d been expecting, it wasn’t what greeted them in Nicodranas. 

They appeared inside someone’s living room. It was cramped, not just because it was small—though it was—but because it had been absolutely crammed with stuff. Two sofas, three easy chairs, a coffee table and several side tables, bookshelves on every wall. The stuff itself was loaded with more stuff: heaps of crocheted throws and decorative pillows on the sofas, baskets of buttons and seashells on the tables, knick-knacks and pretty bottles in front of the books on the shelves. There was hardly room for all of them—Bren, Caleb, Beauregard, Yasha, Jasper, and Ange—to stand, especially with their luggage. 

“Huh,” Caleb said. He set down Knödel’s leather carrying bag on a throw. “That’s a closer landing than usual.”

Jasper didn't really understand why the beach was a vacation activity—he'd spent his whole life on a beach, and it wasn't like sand made anything more fun. But Beau and Caleb were both super into them, and apparently Fjord hadn't gotten enough of them at Driftwood, so here they all were, the Mighty Nein and half a dozen assorted hangers-on, spending an afternoon by the sea.

It was better than the beach at Driftwood, he had to admit. Cleaner—no pipe ash or old fish guts mixed up in the sand. The water looked clearer too. And no one was cuffing him on the head and telling him to dive deeper next time, that's where the real treasure is.

He spent a while helping Ange and Jester build a sand castle, fetching shells and pails of water on command and mostly staying out of the design decisions. He strolled past Caleb and Beau and Veth taking turns burying each other in the sand, Fjord and Caduceus standing at the water's edge and talking about the Wildmother, and Yeza and Luc splashing around in the low tide. He passed a few minutes studying a tide pool with Yasha, catching tiny crabs.

The beach was fun, he decided, but not because of the sand or the water. It was fun because of the people, and the people could've been having fun somewhere with a little more shade.

Along with money and books, something else Jasper had never had before being adopted was a vacation. Grankton hadn't given many days off from the workshop, and Jasper had always spent whatever spare time he had doing something—watching over Ange, scrounging extra food, or hunting down cast-off pamphlets and newspapers to read. Even with Eccron, later, there'd been—there'd been recreational activities, obviously, but just as much reading and training and planning.

Now, though. Ange was off visiting "Auntie Jester's" studio with Yasha. Jasper's stomach was full to bursting with a breakfast of two jam tarts and a chocolate muffin half the size of his head. He had plenty to read, but apparently he couldn't look at most of it until after dinner.

What did people do on vacation? Jasper had a vague idea that maybe they laid outside in the sun, but honestly he preferred the shade.

He wandered from the dining hall back up to the suite that Beau and Yasha had been given, forming a vague plan to meditate and then maybe read one of the non-dunamancy-related books he'd brought with him.
