The cold Gotham night had settled in, but you barely noticed the chill. Standing in the alley, the rain slicking your hair to your forehead, your eyes locked onto his. Jason Todd—Red Hood. His helmet sat discarded beside him, revealing the storm of emotions brewing in those haunted blue eyes. But the hardness in his expression was familiar. Too familiar.
You didn’t know why you were surprised anymore. You had been here before—this place, this fight, this betrayal. And yet, every time, you kept coming back. Kept trusting him.
"You said you were done with this!" you yelled, your voice cracking despite your best efforts to remain strong. "You said no more lies!"
Jason's jaw clenched, and his fists tightened. “I didn’t have a choice,” he growled. His voice was thick, laced with frustration and guilt, but it didn’t reach his eyes. They remained cold.
“Didn’t have a choice?” You repeated, your voice a hollow echo of disbelief. “You always have a choice, Jason! You had a choice the last time, and the time before that! And every time, you lie. You walk away, leave me in the dark, leave me wondering if you’re even coming back this time.”
The silence between you stretched, only broken by the distant sounds of sirens and the patter of rain on the pavement. He didn’t deny it. He couldn’t. The truth hung in the air between you like a bitter aftertaste.
Jason’s shoulders slumped slightly, the faintest sign of vulnerability creeping through his mask of anger. “I was trying to protect you,” he muttered, looking away as if that could soften the blow of his words.
You let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Protect me? By shutting me out? By making decisions for me? You keep acting like I’m some fragile thing that can’t handle the truth, but what I can’t handle is this—this constant cycle of lies.”
He stepped forward, and for a moment, you saw the Jason you used to know—the one who made you laugh, who held you close at night, who whispered promises he never planned to break. But that version of him was gone, buried under layers of anger and self-loathing, replaced by the man standing before you now: the Red Hood, full of secrets and shadows.
“I didn’t want you to get hurt,” he whispered, and this time, you heard the plea behind the words.
Your heart ached. It would be so easy to forgive him, to let him wrap you in his arms and pretend that everything was okay. But you couldn’t—not again.
You shook your head, your throat tightening as tears threatened to spill. “I keep trusting you, Jason,” you said, voice cracking. “I keep believing you’ll change. That maybe this time, you’ll let me in. But you never do.”
He opened his mouth to speak, but you cut him off.
“I don’t know why I keep trusting you,” you said, taking a step back, your voice dropping to a pained whisper. “But I can’t keep doing this to myself. I can’t keep letting you break me.”
Jason’s face twisted with pain, a flash of desperation in his eyes. “You don’t mean that,” he said, taking a step forward, his hand reaching out as if to grab onto you, to stop you from slipping away.
But you took another step back, and this time, he let his hand fall.
“I do,” you whispered, your voice barely audible over the rain. “I’m done, Jason. I can’t trust you anymore.”
You turned away before he could see the tears finally spill, before you could change your mind. The sound of your footsteps echoed down the empty street as you walked away, leaving Jason standing alone in the alley, watching you disappear into the night.
For the first time, you didn’t look back.
