‘Koyunbaba’ (song for a Turkish shepherd/saint on classical guitar)
Inspired by Turkish music, the Koyunbaba suite of 1985–86 eventually became composer Carlo Domeniconi's most well-known work. Throughout the 1990s it was particularly frequently programmed in concerts and recorded by numerous performers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carlo_Domeniconi
It is performed here (parts 1 and 2) by Ayman Jarjour, a professional classical guitarist from Syria (a Christian) who now lives in Scotland:
youtube
About the title of the suite:
Koyunbaba (or Seyit Ali) was a saint who lived in the city of Osmancık in Çorum Province, Turkey, in the 15th century. Koyunbaba (whose epithet means "sheep father") was a shepherd in Bursa in northwestern Turkey. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koyunbaba
The work is a suite pastorale, describing "the natural beauty of a little bay" overlooking the Aegean Sea, where the saint was said to live centuries ago. It has become one of the best known works for guitar of the last 15 years.

The suite has 4 parts, and only the first 2 are performed in the video above. You can hear all 4 parts of the suite performed by Jason Carter, a British guitarist I follow, on his album here: https://jasoncarter-harpguitar.bandcamp.com/album/fragments

So happy my 6th grade daughter heard this: “Hip hop is our secret to greatness,” a #MaysHighSchool senior during #HipHop is Our #Vibranium: A Youth Forum on Black Panther, Community Resilience & Cultural Representation. Other panelists comments: “Vibranium can be your strength in any situation.” “Black Panther mixed #African culture beats and 808s. Music was everything.” “In #BlackPanther, #BlackFolks held the key to the strongest metal on Earth - same with hip hop.” “Vibranium is our culture - how we dress, our music, our ideas, how we move through this world.” @OneMusicFest @TheGatheringSpots @GeorgiaTech #JasonCarter @NextGenATL #ParentingWin #HipHopForever #BlackPower (at The Gathering Spot)

The Travelin’ McCourys at Woodlands Tavern, Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 11, 2016
When the Travelin’ McCourys ripped into “Cumberland Blues” last night, some in the audience may have thought, “Ah - so the Grateful Dead got that song from Del McCoury.”
“Cumberland,” of course, is a Dead original and about as close as Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter ever got to writing a full-on bluegrass number. Given the McCourys are travelin’ on their The Road to Delfest tour - and the festival is staged in Cumberland, MD, - the selection seemed logical and relevant of nothing more.
But when the quintet added a rip-snortin’ instrumental coda to the harmony-rich song and frontman/mandolinist Ronnie McCoury, son of bluegrass legend Del, declared “that was fun!“ at the end, it seemed maybe the musicians were in truth Deadheads covering one of their favorite bands.
This was confirmed toward the night’s end, when the McCourys slipped into “Loser,” complete with the long-lost “sweet Suzy” lyric. The song was full of fireworks, as banjoist Rob McCoury and fiddler Jason Carter approximated Garcia’s electric guitar solos with abandon. Like “Cumberland” before it, “Loser” was played with reverence to the original while maintaining plenty of leeway for the McCourys’ unique stamp of approval.
So we now know the Travelin’ McCourys are Dead fans.
Another thing became clear during the outstanding performance - these cats have serious chops. Like any bluegrass band worthy of the genre, the McCourys oftentimes sounded like a single musician, as solos segued seemlessly from banjo to mando to guitar to fiddle. Jams stopped on a dime, only to pick up flawlessly and barrel down the musical track while the three-part harmony of Ronnie McCoury, Carter and Alan Bartram, on “bass violin,” soared high and lonesome above the proceedings.
Guitarist Cody Kilby, the most recent addition to the band, fairly set his acoustic aflame several times throughout the performance. When he wasn’t soloing, Kilby provided key support as his bandmates pulled the music to and fro.
For nearly two hours on Thursday, the band performed in a haze of sweet-smelling pot smoke and made sure the stoned in the crowd remained wide awake as they played one fiery track after another. They paused only briefly to acknowledge the incredibly enthusiastic reaction from the small, appreciative audience.
Grateful Dead weren’t the only artists to get the McCoury treatment Thursday, as the musicians doffed their caps to Bill Monroe on “Body and Soul” and the Osborne Brothers with “Midnight Flyer,” while also covering the likes of David Grisman and John Hartman.
By the time opener Billy Strings joined the McCourys for a lengthy encore that climaxed with a rollicking take on Flatt & Scruggs’ “Rollin’ in My Sweet Baby’s Arms,” the fact that the audience had witnessed bluegrass kingship in all its glory was impossible to dispute. That has nothing to do with the legendary last name under which the Travelin’ McCourys perform and everything to do with the way they perform.
They’re second-generation bluegrass royalty who deserve the title.
During his 25-minute opening set, Strings made clear he’ll be around for a while. His lighting-fast licks and powerful vocals, effusive onstage persona and choice of songs - which included cuts such as “Sittin’ on Top of the World” and “Cocaine Blues” - made for the all-too-rare warm-up act that you wished would have played longer and caused you to look for recordings at the merchandise stand. Alas, there were none to be had.
Keep an eye on this kid.
