Posted @withregram • @gaiarisingactivations Sunday pottering - These are some of my more unusual sound instruments. A monochord, some Japanese altar bowls and a Korean bronze hand gong. The monochord was made for me by @williamhancockguitars Beautiful repurposed timber’s, strung with different size guitar strings all tuned to C. This is unusual as most monochords (or harp) are strung with piano string. The blocks allow variation based on the cycle of fifths. It’s a drone style instrument, incredibly grounding to listen to. I’m so blessed that Will was happy to make it for me (it might have taken a little bit of pestering 😉) The Japanese Buddhist altar bowls I was lucky enough to find in vintage store in Castlemaine that was filled with a lot of beautiful pieces from across Asia. They are typically used in temples or home shrines. Technically they are actually a bell not a bowl. Very pure sound. No idea how old these are but the little strikers that came with them were very worn in. The hand gong is a rare find. I was just in the right place at the right time. On my way to run a cacao and sound event with @nurtured_heart_living in fact! This is all bronze and hand made by a Korean gong master. When struck I swear it transports you to a mountain temple. Thank goodness the wonderful lady who had brought it back from Korea years ago was willing to part with it although I’ll never understand why.
