Cascade Japanese Maple Re-Wire 8/24~

I’ve often made the error of leaving the wire on too long on my Japanese Maples. This time, I might have taken it off a bit early. I noticed that the fine branches hadn’t held their shape, so I re-wired them.

Since I had it in to work on, I thought I might experiment with a bit of camera work. On an overcast day, I had a light shined on the tree at different angles. I thought I might get a nice round spotlight effect. Obviously I didn’t, but did get some interesting shadows. Anyway, let me know what you like, or don’t…

I haven’t been able to find a lot of information on these cup fungi but I think they are Sclerotinia ficariae. I don’t even have a common name 🤷🏻‍♀️ They’re small though, the biggest ones about the size of my thumb nail. It was an exciting find!

Japanese Maple Bonsai

Nothing like some heavy rain to get those beautiful red colours popping! This is a little Japanese maple that I’ve had for around a year now, recently repotted + adjusting to its smaller bonsai pot 🌳

Twisted Maple in Winter~

I loved the curve and flow the branches, but bonsai/penzai are never finished. And those nice wavy limbs will elongate and the tree will lose its sense of balance with a couple of lanky branches shooting off. Clipping them should encourage ramifaction. The buds are healthy, so I expect a pair of branches to sprout from where I clipped them.

These are before and after pruning photos. In one a masked out the existing branch on the left. I will see how it grows out this spring and will likely clip off clean. This maple also straighten up a bit over winter. I’ll listen to the tree and not try to bend it further again. However, I will have to bring some of the branches down a bit to recapture the original feel.

I collected this tree from my backyard and have been growing it for two years.
