This is so funny and actually super on brand. For those that don’t know: the original Van Gogh was in fact very into Japan, to the point where he was known to eat using imported Japanese chopsticks. A lot of his artwork compositions were inspired by the new influx of Japanese Woodblock prints available in Europe after the Sakoku (closed nation) policy was lifted. The recent re-opening of trade between Japan and the rest of the world meant there was a lot of hype among European asrtists about otherwise inaccessible cultural products from Japan. It had a big impact on the development of impressionism.
