so i usually would post progress on my various projects over on instagram in the form of stories- i miss it, though instagram makes me miserable so i don’t plan on going back so i’m gonna start making progress reblog chains here instead, and link them in a masterpost once i accumulate enough.

today’s project: a doll of january!

for the uninitiated, january is my beloved horrible oc who i’ve had since around 2020? not my oldest oc by any means, but probably the most . persistent . he’s changed and evolved so much since when i first made him, but at the same time still has the core aspects that kept me hooked on him and his story to begin with.

here are some images of him, for reference of what i’m going for.

^OLD ART screaming crying etc. man. he also has a post-plot design which is essentially this but with some wear and tear. later into this project im gonna decide which version i want to make. ^ a commission i bought of him by the totally awesome bff crabjest (he is so talented. i need to go insane look look look look) which is genuinely one of my favorite images on this earth. i need to explode him. you can see some of the post-plot scarring on this one.

i often say stuff like “i’m shaking him up and down” or “i’m throwing him into a wall” or “i need to grab him in my mouth like a dog and rend him asunder” , etc, when talking about him. so like naturally i just have to make him into a doll. it’s only fair! i'm gonna divide this post up by days, so i add a new reblog to the chain per day. i didn't make a post yesterday so i'll do a quick recap of what i got done then and then move on and try to keep up to date as much as i can.

DAY 1:

my first step: base doll acquisition. i had been sorta planning this doll custom for a while, so i had an idea of what doll i wanted to start with, but hadnt gotten around to it until now where i found a suitable doll in target the other day for relatively cheap. ive had terrible luck with finding dolls at thrift stores and secondhand, so while i felt silly getting it new only to hack it into little pieces, i figured it was the best way to ensure i make any progress at all.

here she is! she is a made to move barbie, specifically HRH27. these dolls r unironically sick, great articulation in the arms, legs, wrists, ankles, even torso which is crazy i feel like you dont see torso articulation often.

my reasoning for using a feminine doll on a masculine character is that january is enough of a twig that it genuinely would not work out if i try to base him on a ken doll, or a rainbow high/monster high/ever after high masc base doll, since all those dolls are more on the muscular side. and also january is very tall and lanky, and a modified barbie would work better for him than a different doll. and also barbies are easier to find and not as expensive as other brands LOLL

yesterday i took her head off, removed her hair, and started trying to give him amateur top surgery with an xacto knife but it wasn't working out so i went to bed since i had to b up early.

this is where i was at . you can see where i started chipping away at the chest but hadn't made much progress at all.

DAY 2:

present day!

i've managed to successfully preform the surgery. it's pretty rough, but it doesn't have to look nice as i'm gonna sculpt a lot over the base body with apoxie sculpt.

i couldnt get my hands on any sandpaper like i had planned to, so i tried the xacto knife again but this time used a tealight candle to heat the plastic and cut away at it quickly while it was still soft. this is probably not a safe smart way to do this at ALLL and i definitely breathed in a little of the burnt plastic fumes but it worked! and i had my window open even in the cold because i wasnt about to smell up my room. i only scorched him once or twice, and eventually i found a sweet spot where the plastic was soft enough to easily slice away big chunks at a time. i'm definitely gonna have to swap out my xacto knife blade after this though.

cutting away at the plastic opened two holes in the doll's chest, and to make sure the apoxie sculpt clay doesn't get in and gunk up the torso joint and limit movement, i used some tulle fabric and superglued it over the holes to give the clay something to grip to. i considered using wire, but i couldn't properly control or bend it at this small a scale, so i'll just be delicate over the fabric with my first pass of apoxie. i planned to do it today but wow it got late quick. here's where i'm at now:

i might add to this post if i end up doing a first pass of apoxie but for now i think i might call it a night. funny enough, making this post has eaten up my work time but i dont mind . it should go faster in the future as i hopefully wont have as much of a backlog to talk about, or will at least learn not to be this verbose DSL;KFJS;LKDJ
