MLK’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” (16/04/1963)
I think this letter is one of the more underrated aspects of Dr. King’s incredible and complex legacy.
Although many notable Christian and Jewish clergymen stood for Civil Rights, Dr. King also faced criticism from many others, particularly in the South, who felt that his civil disobedience was forcing the issue, or that justice would take time, or that he might instigate violence.
Dr. King eloquently answered their concerns with the force of theology, history, and reason. I particularly admire his defence of morality and law, showing that laws cannot be uncoupled from morality. To this end, he used Jewish and Christian theology, as well as notable historical examples, to demonstrate his point.
Some great quotes:
“Any law that uplifts human personality is just. Any law that degrades human personality is unjust. All segregation statutes are unjust because segregation distorts the soul and damages the personality. It gives the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority. Segregation, to use the terminology of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber, substitutes an “I it” relationship for an “I thou” relationship and ends up relegating persons to the status of things. Hence segregation is not only politically, economically, and sociologically unsound, it is morally wrong and sinful. Paul Tillich has said that sin is separation. Is not segregation an existential expression of man’s tragic separation, his awful estrangement, his terrible sinfulness? Thus it is that I can urge men to obey the 1954 decision of the Supreme Court, for it is morally right; (Deborah notes: Brown v Board, which outlawed segregation in schools) and I can urge them to disobey segregation ordinances, for they are morally wrong.”
In light of the upcoming Holocaust Memorial Day, it is worth noting Dr. King’s keen affinity with Jewish theology. Most people may recall him quoting Isaiah in his famous “I Have A Dream” speech, and here is another example:
“Of course, there is nothing new about this kind of civil disobedience. It was evidenced sublimely in the refusal of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to obey the laws of Nebuchadnezzar, on the ground that a higher moral law was at stake...”
Then Dr. King turns to history, further underscoring his point that just because something is legal does not make it right:
“...We should never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was “legal” and everything the Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was “illegal”. It was “illegal” to aid and comfort a Jew in Hitler’s Germany. Even so, I am sure that, had I lived in Germany at the time, (Deborah notes: Germany had a small but notable black German population, also victims of Hitler’s genocide, as well as a population of prominent African-Americans who visited Germany during the 20′s) I would have aided and comforted my Jewish brothers. If today I lived in a Communist country where certain principles dear tot he Christian faith are suppressed, I would openly advocate disobeying that country’s antireligious laws.”
(Other things that were legal in Nazi Germany: stripping Jews of their businesses and property rights, reporting Jews to the Nazis, assisting with the transportation of Jews to their death, publishing hateful and violent lies about Jews, teaching non-Jews to hate and deride Jews).
He also defends standing on the side of right, rather than the side of moderateness:
“I had hoped that the white moderate would understand that law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and that when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress...
Society must protect the robbed and punish the robber.”
A great message for today’s world and tomorrow.
