Mean Girls 2024 Doesn't Understand Janis
Me watching Janis in Mean Girls 2024:
The original Mean Girls was based on a nonfiction called "Queen Bees and Wannabes". It's a self-help book for parents to help them connect with their daughters. It describes the powers of the cliques and the different roles in them.
It's pretty clear cut that Regina George is based on the "Queen Bee" role. This role is characterized by:
"Her friends do what she wants to do".
"She isn't intiminated by any other girl in her class".
"She can argue anyone down, including friends, peers, teachers and parents".
"She can make another girl feel "anointed" by declaring her a special friend".
"She won't [...] take responsibility when she hurts someone's feelings".
"If she's been wronged, she feels she has the right to seek revenge".
If you look carefully, you'll see that some of these features are noticeable in Janis as well. "Her friends do what she wants to do": She subtley pressures Cady to skip class.
youtube
"She won't [...] take responsibility when she hurts someone's feelings": She refused to properly apologize when everyone else did.
youtube
"If she's been wronged, she feels she has the right to seek revenge": I don't need to explain that one.
This is because Janis is also a Queen Bee, for a different clique. The movie makes a point to show us that there isn't just one clique, the plastics were just more prominent when Janis explained the seating order in the cafeteria.
youtube
Everyone is a part of girl world. Everybody are a part of cliques. Everyone perpetuates the different roles in them. And Janis too, is a Queen Bee. She too, is a mean girl.
Now – remember the scene I put where Janis and Cady skip class? It was cut from the new one. To me, this was a red flag. This scene was crucial in subtley establishing everything I just described. For the entire musical, I thought they were gonna water down Janis, but they couldn't have, there's a scene where she expicitly states that she's a mean girl:
youtube
So I remained fairly calm. Until I got to the scene. Instead of Janis calling herself mean, she sang a small musical number about how shitty Cady is.
...
youtube
But I still had some hope! There's still the scene where she does the "non apology" to Regina. Right? Right...?
The movie's still in theaters, so I couldn't find the actual clip, but here's what she sang instead:
youtube
So. Um. What was I gonna do? Oh yeah!
Mean Girls the Musical tries to pretend Janis is just a pure innocent victim. Not only is that not who she is, but it goes completely against everything the original tried to say. There isn't just one Big Bad in social circles, and there isn't black and white morality in girl world. Janis deserved better.

annie edison for the character ask?
favorite thing about them
she's often perceived by others as/has a persona of being both Mature For Her Age and Young And Innocent and (probably because of how deeply i relate) i love the times when she’s not limited by that perception--i’ll link a meta post about that wrt the dynamic between her + troy + abed. tbh i generally relate a LOT to annie--while my experiences haven’t the same as hers and i don’t want to claim to understand them specifically, i can see a lot of myself in her
least favorite thing about them
hmmm . . . from an out-of-universe standpoint, not a fan of how sexualized she is. from a non criticizing-the-show standpoint, uhhhhhh her control issues frustrate me at times, through they’re also VERY relatable (and aren’t smth i’d change about her character)
favorite line
the one from virtual systems analysis where she says she’s not in love with jeff, she’s in love with being loved
brOTP
I've said a lot I like her and troy’s friendship, but i’m also going to mention her friendship with Shirley!
OTP
trobedison
nOTP
her/jeff
random headcanon
she is Not neurotypical
unpopular opinion
i feel like my most unpopular annie opinion (though it’s not unpopular in the circle of the fandom i’m in) is that i don’t ship her and jeff at all.
song i associate with them
“something that I want” by grace potter and “at seventeen” by janis ian (as I've said before, but hey!)
favorite picture of them
currently? bottom gif in this gifset
thanks!!

You're right about that, I'm honestly not sure.
But yes, Betty Deville (my mental dictionary has her image in the entrance for "butch") the married woman from a 90s cartoon full of adult jokes including (but not limited) to the ones that imply her and her husband's homosexuality
And was turned into an openly lesbian mom in the revival (with the original creators approval)
I always felt something was off about Betty and Howard, but it was only when I started learnign about queer culture around 14 that I understood what.
I really think that in the original series, Betty and Howard married to keep appearances.
it's time to face facts; the sixties are over, and we lost! So just get with the program, all right?!
(from season 3's episode Naked Tommy https://rugrats.fandom.com/wiki/Naked_Tommy/Transcript Yes, she is talking about the free thinking of the sixties, not about sexual preferences, but you can see she was a resigned conformist)
I don't see what's wrong about Theo Crain besides that's she's thin ?
Yeah, Rika is child but don't you feel the vibes?
I started the second list as a "femenine lesbians" just to show how few they are—not to argue with OP, but to show the world just how very few lesbians of any kind we have in media— and the first one that came to mind was Regina, and although I particulary consider toughness to be a very femenine trait, not everyone thinks the same so I made it a "femenine but though" list.
And yes, I'm not the first person to point out the lesbian meta around Regina
Her obsession with signaling Janis Ian as lesbian is a typical tactic of homo people with internalized homophobia, trying to direct everyone's attention away from their own homosexuality. I'd dare to say that middle school Regina had a crush on Janis and got scared.
Also the way she treats her boyfriends? as if she resented them somehow...
Again, common among people with internalized homophobia is to seek multiple s e x partners in their quest to find someone who satisfies their needs (but won't find them until they start looking at the right gender). Just like Regina. If you want more proof, you can just google "lesbian regina george" and see more complete lectures about her.
By the way I don't know which two you refer to, but to be clear, 3 of the women I mentioned are canonically—not just meta—lesbian (aside of Betty).
(I mean, yes, Rosa is bisexual, but as bi myself, I consider myself also a lesbian, liken men doesn't cancel liking women)
Finally, if I did a list, it wasn't to argue OP's point. It was beacuse I am a gold star student and if you ask me to name 5 I will do my best to find those 5 (and you'll notice that still I could only think of 4, one of them from a show I don't even watch, so OP's point stands).
As I said, I just want more lesbians
I lose fifteen years off my life whenever people act like it’s better representation to have a lesbian character that isn’t masculine or butch because of stereotypes. name five butch characters on tv! quickly

SPOTIFY PLAYLIST: KAT HUMMEL (♫)
1. FEELINGS - HAYLEY KIYOKO
I’m kicking the playlist off loud and proud, by honoring one of the most inspirational out artists currently in the industry. I have so much respect for Hayley for being brave enough to sing about the women she loves, even if society would rather she didn’t.
2. DELIVER - FIFTH HARMONY
I included this song because I love the aesthetics of the music video, and to show some love to a fellow girl group... well, a former one. Don’t worry, Sirens, we aren’t going anywhere.
3. DEFYING GRAVITY - SUTTON FOSTER/RACHEL TUCKER
(Could I not put this song on here???? Anyway, Kat would probs prefer Sutton but like, Rachel Tucker. Prepare to die when you hear the key change and the ending riffs tbh)
4. FIRST BURN - THE ELIZAS OF HAMILTON
This song combines everything I love: scorned women, pop musical theatre, crazy riffs, and mind-numbing belting.
5. JOANNE - LADY GAGA
(This song is by one of Kat’s idols, but it always makes her shed a tear for her mom.)
6. DANCE IN THE DARK - LADY GAGA
I love this song because of it’s killer bassline and chord progression. I also think of this song as something empowering, even though I know it’s not meant that way. I personally like dancing in the dark and the sense of reckless abandon it gives me. I love the shoutouts to so many idols gone too soon. Find your freedom in the music~ (Deep rooted, but this song also could refer to Kat’s insecurities about finding someone who will love her for exactly who she is.)
7. SOMEDAY - THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME OBC
My hope that we can all find a better world, one not fueled by hate and bigotry, beautifully sung by Cierra Renee. May we all help to create that world someday.
8. STAND BY ME - FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
I’m dedicating this one to my girls on tour. I love them all so much.
9. DRUMMING SONG - FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
(The first of several very meta songs, mostly because Florence is what I listen to in order to get my Kat muse going. Drumming Song is very obviously about anyone Kat has a crush on, but noticably about how she never reveals her romantic feelings, just keeps them all in her head. Looking at you, Norah.)
10. WHAT THE WATER GAVE ME - FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
(Another song I use to get into Kat’s headspace. I don’t think she’d ever seen the ocean until she went on tour, and I think she sees it as a source of healing and inspiration for her designs, even if she gets sunburnt very easily.)
11. HOW BIG, HOW BLUE, HOW BEAUTIFUL - FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
The first time I heard this song, I thought about what it’s like to be on tour. All of the beautiful cities, all of the incredible fans I’ve met... big, blue, and beautiful. Or maybe I’m talking about the Genie from Aladdin.
12. HUNGER - FLORENCE + THE MACHINE
I’m including this song because I’d love to cover it. From the moment this was released, I’ve had it basically on repeat. I’m not sure what’s more addicting-- the double meaning of the lyrics, or the hook.
13. PRAYING - KESHA
I’ve always been incredibly vocal of my support of Kesha and her incredible talent, and I’m including this song as a reminder that the bullies always get what’s coming to them in the end.
14. NEW YORK STATE OF MIND - THE SIRENS
Doesn’t my sister have an incredible voice?
15. FOUND/TONIGHT - BEN PLATT AND LIN MANUEL MIRANDA
I love a good mashup, and I love that this song was able to take two such influential musicals and put them together. Plus, Ben Platt’s voice doesn’t hurt, either.
16. FLIGHT - SUTTON FOSTER AND MEGAN MCGINNIS
This is my very public way of asking-- Marley, will you duet this song with me sometime? I’ve always thought of Marley when I hear this one. mostly because their voices are both so angelic, but also because it reminds me of our childhood. There’s something so innocent and sweet about the lyrics-- let me run through a field in the night. I think of lying out with Marley in my childhood backyard, counting the stars and watching the clouds go by.
17. WHEN THE EARTH STOPPED TURNING - CAROLEE CARMELLO
(Another love letter to her mom, Kat thinks this was written for her specifically.)
18. DIAMOND HEART - LADY GAGA
(If Kat had to describe herself in a song, she’d use parts of this and parts of Monster. Sometimes, she feels like she’s putting on the horse and pony show even when all she wants to do is scream, but she doesn’t think she’s a bad person.)
19. YOU WILL BE FOUND - DEAR EVAN HANSEN OBC
I know I already included half of this song in my playlist, but I so desperately wish this song had been around when I was in high school. I play this song nearly all the time to remind myself that no matter what, there’s someone to reach out to, there’s someone to be kind to, and there’s someone who needs to be found.
20. FROM NOW ON - HUGH JACKMAN
My favorite song from the Greatest Showman, I could listen to this for three years on repeat. This song always makes me think of my father.
21. I’D RATHER BE ME - MEAN GIRLS OBC
Janis Ian was my first girl crush, and Barrett Weed has continued the tradition. I was a Janis in high school, and this is a giant “screw you” song that I’d love to sing to some people I went to school with.
22. MONSTER - FROZEN OBC
(A song of how Kat sees herself. Part of her is scared that the bullies were right about her.)
23. POMEGRANATE - THE SIRENS
(Is it vain of her to include the only song on the album she solos on? Oops.)
24. BLUEBIRD - SARA BAREILLES
I’ve always had this song on repeat whenever I feel insecure. It’s so simple, both in the piano part and in the lyrics, but it’s truly beautiful in what it does and what it says. Gather your strength and rise up.

Fanfic Author Profile
@chocolatequeennk, thank you for this template! What a great idea. I’ll be posting it on my blog, and linking to it as a permanent page.
Archives:
AO3 | Teaspoon (not currently posting new fic to Teaspoon)
Ships:
Doctor Who:
Ten x Rose | Tentoo x Rose | Nine x Rose | Eight x Rose, especially when Rose is dimension hopping.
I generally write Ten or TenToo x Rose rather than Nine x Rose, but only because I hear Ten in my head. I have a hard time writing Nine, but I DEARLY LOVE him with Rose. I read Nine x Rose.
TenInchFic:
Alec Hardy x Rose Tyler | Aiden Hoynes x Rose Tyler (under certain circumstances) | Jean-Francois Mercier x Rose (or Betty under certain circumstances.)
Rating:
All readers through E#pl1c!t (misspelled so icky blogs don’t find the word), though E is rarer for me. Generally I hover between Teen and Mature, with perhaps one scene in certain fics that might garner a high M or low E. There are a few exceptions.
DW ‘verse or AU:
Both.
Genres:
Action/adventure, romance, suspense, crack, humor (or attempts at it), AUs of all kinds, occasional period pieces.
Tropes:
Canon tropes: Downtime in the library. UST in the swimming pool. Breakfast in the galley. Chips, but not as often as most write them. If Rose ate chips as often as she eats them in fic, she’d have a premature coronary from clogged arteries. Rose wanders off. Jail happens a lot.
TenToo tropes:
Toaster fixing, jam, bananas, sexy specs, blue suit, brown suit gets tailored, but also jeans at Rose’s insistence, Janis Joplin coat (he has to really look for it, and ends up snatching it when no one is looking), Chucks, alias John Smith only when in disguise, although Lewis and Sarge happen too (also during sehksay times, which happen a lot.
AU tropes: coffee shops, libraries, book stores, universities, heiress, fairy tales, period pieces, WWII, spies, mutual pining.
Nopes:
Any romance between River and Ten or Nine or Eight... etc... I can’t change Big Finish canon, but I can ignore it and say she doesn’t travel back to meet other Doctors. Unpopular opinion: if her story and character had been written properly, I wouldn’t have been opposed to the Doctor finding love with her after Rose. Because see above -- Ten sending everything about himself through the Void into TenToo. Helps me cope with Eleven and beyond. To wrap my head around seasons 5+, it is the only way I can understand.
Rose with anyone other than the Doctor -- except under extremely carefully crafted circumstances. For example, I was very, very careful that it was 100% impossible for her to reunite with the Doctor when she fell in love with Alec Hardy in my ClosedVerse. No exception. Fobbed Ten as Alec is a good one, though.
Rose will never choose someone else over the Doctor. Ever. If she falls in love with someone in Pete’s World, and the Doctor makes his way back, she will never choose the other love over him. She will never choose anyone over TenToo, either.
Ten will never choose someone else over Rose.
Master x Doctor or any slashfic (just not my thing). I see them as best friends, or even like brothers way back when.
Prostitute Rose (I don’t read SDoaCG fic for that reason).
OT3
Jack x Rose
Master x Rose
Killing off TenToo to get her with Ten.
Kilgrave, Brendan, or now, Don Juan with Rose. Further, I won’t read “redemption” fic with this trio.
Cheating/adultery fic.
Babyfic:
Yep. I always tag. And I understand when people don’t want to read. I don’t think every story has to include this, but sometimes I do think it adds to the plot. Sorta fits well into FoundVerse, because of Jane’s character. I don’t think it always fits in a story, though.
Head canons that influence my writing:
Rose was altered when she joined with the TARDIS/Bad Wolf. Depending upon the story, this happens to varying degrees. If she regenerates, I won’t write her regenerating into a new person. Rose will always be the Rose that we are familiar with. I love her too much.
Rose will always the love the Doctor. However, I’m not big on either reading or writing pre-Eight x Rose. Mainly, that is because I’m not familiar enough. And I might have a bit of a squick when it comes to One, Two, Three, Four, Six, and Seven. Not because of how they look, either. No need to elaborate. No judgement. Just not for me.
The Moment was Bad Wolf -- saving the Doctors just like Rose and the TARDIS saved Nine. (Unpopular opinion -- i don’t hate the War Doctor, but that doesn’t mean I bought into the storyline. Seeing the Moment interact with him was quite amusing.)
GITF didn’t happen. I ignore it. It is a bad, bad dream. Maybe Mickey was dreaming it.
The Stone Rose happened. Ten calls Rose His Lucky Pants quite often, but in a flirty way. When TenToo comes around, her calls her His Lucky Pants, but not so innocently. {{wink wink}}
Regarding TenToo. When Ten regenerated into Eleven, his memories post-Journey’s End re-integrated with TenToo.
Dimension Hopping Rose. She jumped. A lot. She met many of the Doctors, and they all knew something was “up” with her, but I don’t necessarily think they figured it out. Since in my canon she isn’t bonded with the Doctor yet, they wouldn’t know they were together.
Sometimes TenToo doesn’t happen. The meta-crisis doesn’t always happen in my head. In canon, I think it made the most sense for the series, though.
TenToo is the Doctor. Period.
TenToo and Rose had a rough patch after BWB II. But they weren’t “estranged.” It just took them a while to catch their footing. But once they did, fireworks. Bam.
TenToo and Rose got married. In some stories, they have kids, in others they don’t.
TenToo successfully grew a TARDIS, but he still wanted to live a domestic life. While on Earth, the TARDIS disguises herself as a little, domestic cottage. No curtains or carpets. Shutters and hardwood. When traveling, the beloved blue box.
When either Nine, Ten, or Tentoo marry Rose, bonding happens. But so does a human wedding, because the Doctor wants to experience it all. Because the TARDIS is in her head, and because the Doctor is a touch-telepath, it happens.
TenToo and Tony are partners in crime.
TenToo and Jackie get along very well, except when they don’t.
Pete’s World Torchwood is a force for good, even if the Doctor has to advocate for that sometimes. Every institution gets off track from time-to-time. TenToo helps Torchwood as much as he can, but unofficially. Rose still works for Torchwood. TenToo might be an author, a teacher, or a professor between adventures.
I love Fobbed Ten. Love. Love. Love.
Ten and Rose were not intimate before they were separated at Doomsday. I can understand why people do have that head-canon, though. But not being physically intimate yet seems to make the tragedy of Doomsday that much more poignant for me. They were both, however, completely in love. They hadn’t voiced it, though. And they both knew the others’ feelings. The “Forever” scene sealed that for me.
Jimmy Stone was a jerk, but not abusive. I don’t think Rose would have put up with that.
Thoughts on other companions:
Donna, Martha, and Astrid were all stars. (Is Astrid a companion? She would have been great, I think. I didn’t know about JE when I watched VotD -- I’d kept myself spoiler free while watching on Netflix. I just wanted Ten to be happy.)
Amy and Rory are great together (no Amy pining over the Doctor). Clara and Danny in a healthy relationship would have been fantastic.
Other things of note:
Way back when, I wrote a significantly large TenToo x Rose series called the JazzVerse. Each story was named after a classic jazz work.
I named Tentoo. I... NAMED Ten...Too. Not a good move. I was very new to the fandom, and was one of the first fanfic.net writers to write significantly long TenToo fics. At one time, the JazzVerse fics were the most-read TenToo fics on fanfic.net. I really did like his name: Ian Noble Smith.
I didn’t know that naming the Doctor was a big, fat no-no, but I’ve chalked it up to ignorance. I don’t know if I’ll ever put the JazzVerse back up (for a lot of reasons -- I feel like the writing is pretty weak, for one).
Open for prompts?
But I can’t always guarantee that I will write them. {winkwink}
