The Goodfellas Soundtrack: Juxtaposition of Sound
Tumblr media

Also see my original essay “Juxtaposition of Sound” https://ift.tt/2Y1X49P
Martin Scorsese has always had gift for marrying music with film. Goodfellas is one of the greatest masterpieces of this marriage. From the slow revelations of gangland murders to Derek and The Dominoes “Layla”, to the frenetic mélange that accompanies the film’s wild, jump-cut climax. Scorsese like a musician himself knows what notes to play and not play, when to pause and when to speed up, when to go hard or soft.
• “Rags to Riches” by Tony Bennett – Opening credits, opening narration. • “Can’t We Be Sweethearts” by The Cleftones – Young Henry is parking Cadillacs. • “Hearts of Stone” by Otis Williams and the Charms – Henry’s mailman is threatened. • “Sincerely” by The Moonglows – The wiseguy get-together (cookout) at Paulie’s home. • “Firenze Sogna” by Giuseppe Di Stefano – New suit; Shooting victim (Wasting aprons). • “Speedo” by The Cadillacs – Kid Henry, the sandwich boy; Jimmy Conway is first introduced. • “Parlami d’amore Mariu” by Giuseppe Di Stefano – Young Henry gets pinched for selling cigarettes. • “Stardust” by Billy Ward and His Dominoes – Idlewild Airport 1963; First appearance of the grown-up Henry Hill; Truck hijacking. • “This World We Love In (Il Cielo In Una Stanza)” by Mina – In the Bamboo Lounge; Mobsters are introduced; Air France heist is planned. • “Playboy” by The Marvelettes – Bamboo Lounge bust-out – Henry and Tommy burn the restaurant. • “It’s Not for Me to Say” by Johnny Mathis – The double date; Karen is introduced, and ignored by Henry. • “I Will Follow Him” by Peggy March– Karen is stood-up, and loudly confronts Henry in the street. • “Then He Kissed Me” by The Crystals – Henry and Karen enter the Copacabana from the rear. • “Look in My Eyes” by The Chantels – The Air France heist; Paulie gets his cut. • “Roses Are Red” by Bobby Vinton – Henry and Karen at the beach resort; Receiving champagne from Bobby Vinton at the Copa. • “Life Is But a Dream” by The Harptones – Henry and Karen’s wedding and reception. • “Leader of the Pack” by The Shangri-Las – The hostess party. • “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head?” by Dean Martin – Narration continues – Mob life montage. • “He’s Sure the Boy I Love” by The Crystals – Billy Batts is introduced at the Suite Lounge; “Shinebox” insult. • “Atlantis” by Donovan – Billy Batts is beaten down and kicked by Tommy and Jimmy. • “Pretend You Don’t See Her” by Jerry Vale – Friday night at the Copa with the girlfriends; Sunday dinner at Paulie’s. • “Remember (Walkin’ in the Sand)” by The Shangri-Las – Henry with Janice at the Suite before digging up Billy Batts’s body. • “Baby I Love You” by Aretha Franklin – Janice Rossi’s apartment; She shows her girlfriends around; Spider is introduced at a poker game. • “Firenze Sogna” by Giuseppe Di Stefano – (2nd time played) Another poker game; Tommy kills Spider. • “Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin – Prison life/dinner; Henry begins selling drugs. • “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” Performed by Tony Bennett – Dinner at Paulie’s house after Henry is paroled. • “Gimme Shelter” by The Rolling Stones – Henry cutting cocaine at Sandy’s place; Brings in Jimmy and Tommy at the parole office. • “Wives and Lovers” by Jack Jones – Karen shows off the new house/furniture to Belle; Morrie pitches the Lufthansa heist to Henry. • “Monkey Man” by The Rolling Stones – The babysitter, Lois Byrd (with baby) is introduced; Henry again at Sandy’s place mixing the coke. • “Frosty the Snowman” by The Ronettes – Henry arrives at the Christmas party; Jimmy chews out Johnny Roastbeef for the Cadillac. • “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” by Darlene Love – Jimmy chews out Frankie Carbone for the mink; Morrie pesters Jimmy for his share of the Lufthansa heist. • “Bells of St. Marys” by The Drifters – Henry Hill’s Christmas tree; The execution of Stacks Edwards. • “Unchained Melody” by Vito and The Salutations – In the bar, Henry is worried about Stacks; Tommy thinks he’s being “made”; Morrie again pesters Jimmy. • “Sunshine of Your Love” by Cream – Jimmy contemplates killing Morrie and other members of his crew. • “Layla (Piano Exit)” by Derek and The Dominos – Dead bodies are being discovered all over town; Tommy is executed. • “Jump into the Fire” by Harry Nilsson – The beginning of the “May 11, 1980 – 6:55 AM” helicopter sequence; Delivering guns to Jimmy. • “Memo from Turner” by Mick Jagger – Henry leaves Jimmy’s with the unwanted guns. • “Magic Bus” by The Who (Live at Leeds version) – Frantic, intoxicated driving; Henry almost has a car accident. • “Jump into the Fire” by Harry Nilsson – (2nd time played) Henry drive • “My Way” by Sid Vicious – End credits.

Reports from the scene identified the following on and around Archbolt’s body:
-a human finger, decayed to bone, mounted on a wire, and strung on a silver chain -a silver pillbox containing three Vicodin tablets -a faded liquor store receipt with an unidentifiable four-line string of numbers, agreed to be in Archbolt’s neat writing, on the back -a Polaroid photograph, completely deteriorated from exposure to the elements -a plastic bag containing traces of PTV -three keys: one to Archbolt’s Cadillac; one later matched to a condemned apartment building in South Ashfield; and one that has never been satisfactorily identified -two cell phones, both completely destroyed -a vial of congealed blood, later matched to Janice Jackson. Jackson was a 13-year-old girl whose body was dredged, in an advanced state of decay, from Toluca Lake seven months before Archbolt’s disappearance. It was impossible to determine Jackson’s cause of death and her death was initially ruled accidental. The investigation was reopened after the DNA match and is still ongoing.

Press Release:
For her exhibition with Parker Gallery, the artist’s first solo show in Los Angeles, Judy Linn will exhibit a group of black-and-white and color photographs taken over the last 31 years. Linn’s pictures traverse genres, occupying an interstitial space between snapshots, the found still-life, and documentary photography. As evidenced by her images taken in everyday, often unremarkable environments, Linn’s work appears spontaneous, yet her work is not oriented towards action. Her work as a photographer takes place in the moments just before or after the action has oc- curred, during a period of reflection, but never in between. Linn refuses to cede to the seductive power of photography’s time-freezing nature, focusing instead on something that has been there and will remain.
As she has chosen to do for exhibitions in the past, the presentation will include prints pinned directly to the wall —an act that brings attention to the paper as an object, the relationships that form between image to border, and from one paper’s edge to another—together with framed prints. Deliberately pinning a print to the wall minimizes the preciousness of the illusion, while revealing its vulner- able, naked, and bare existence. Pinning also implies that the sequencing and arrangement are buoys, subject to shifting. In contrast, the framed work within the grouping are anchors along Linn’s route.
In book shelf (2007), Linn has taken a photograph of the back of an art book. It’s a reproduction of an oil painting from 1655, framed by an industrial book shelf. The white flash of the camera has blown out the female subject’s head, while the male portraitist (Gerard ter Borch) has chosen to study the back of her dress, her neck, and the vibrant red bed hangings in front of her. On the bed: a kinky brush.
In a reversal, Linn turns the camera to her TV—a piece of talking furniture in the living room—in Karlson Movie (2000). Here, a color photo of a black-and-white film depicts a cartoonishly sinister pair of “Bowery Boys” eyes that peek out from behind an upholstered chair. A bulky pillow is placed absurdly on the character’s head, while the curtained background helps to camouflage him. Who is he creeping on? What fantasy is he reenacting? There’s a dynamic comedic standoff at play here: Linn aiming her camera at her tiny television set that squats on a table inches from the floor.
Burning car (1986) is as vibrant as it is shocking. Shocking not only in its subject matter, but for its presence amongst the other works, tipping the equilibrium of the more static pictures. Passersby hardly react, except for a young girl who looks back at the chaos behind her like Lot’s wife. At the edge of the frame, the fireman has put aside his duty and seems frozen in his resignation to just let the car burn. Linn was out shooting with Helen Levitt when she came across the burning Cadillac.

1937 Alfa Romeo 8C Wins Best of Show at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
An exquisite 1937 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Touring Berlinetta took home the Best of Show prize at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The deep blue Alfa Romeo won its class before competing for Best of Show and also picked up this year’s Charles A. Chayne Trophy—plus, it was named the J. B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car.
“As a Zagato collector, I broke the rules and bought a Touring-bodied car because this Alfa Romeo is very special,” said owner David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California, in a statement. “It is a piece of automotive architecture mounted on a Grand Prix chassis that has technology that was top of the line for prewar cars. It’s a wonderful combination. It’s beautiful from top to bottom.”
The polished prizewinner competed against over 200 cars from 17 countries and 31 states on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The concours is not a contest of speed, but instead one of elegance, just as it has been since its inception in 1950.
“This Alfa Romeo 8C 2.9 has all that one would wish for in a car—speed, style, and, frankly, sex appeal,” said  Sandra Button, Concours chairman, in a release. “The Touring styling is simply magical, and to top it off it makes all the right noises!”
Honorable mentions include a 1929 Duesenberg J Murphy Town Limousine owned by the Lehrman Collection of Palm Beach, Florida, and a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Figoni Fastback Coupé owned by Robert Kudela of Chropyně, Czech Republic.
This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance also raised $1.8 million for charity that will benefit over 80 local Monterey county charities.
The 69th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance returns to the third Sunday of August next year—so be sure to mark your calendars for August 18, 2019.

1937 Alfa Romeo 8C Scores Best of Show Win at 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
“As a Zagato collector, I broke the rules and bought a Touring-bodied car because this Alfa Romeo is very special,” said owner David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California in a statement.
The concours is not a contest of speed, but instead it is one of elegance since its inception in 1950.
“This Alfa Romeo 8C 2.9 has all that one would wish for in a car—speed, style, and, frankly, sex appeal,” said  Sandra Button, Concours chairman in a release. “The Touring styling is simply magical, and to top it off it makes all the right noises!”
Honorable mentions include a 1929 Duesenberg J Murphy Town Limousine owned by the Lehrman Collection of Palm Beach, Florida and a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Figoni Fastback Coupé owned by Robert Kudela of Chropyně, Czech Republic.
This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance also raised $1.8 million for charity that will benefit over 80 local Monterey county charities.

The Goodfellas Soundtrack: Juxtaposition of Sound
Tumblr media
vimeo
