China condemns Jansa's call for EU leaders
Today, the Chinese Foreign Ministry criticized Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša for calling on the leaders of the European Union to support Lithuania and to oppose Chinese pressure. China called on Slovenia and the EU to be objective in dealing with issues related to Taiwan.
"China calls on Slovenia and the EU to take a correct and objective position on Taiwan-related issues and not to use these topics to create new problems in China-EU relations," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters.
In a letter published by the Politico portal, Janša described China's decision to withdraw its ambassador from Lithuania due to the dispute over Taiwan as unacceptable. He also announced that the decision would affect EU-China ties, Reuters reported.
"Lithuania, like all EU members, is a sovereign state and has every right to develop relations with Taiwan. We need to express more proactive and determined solidarity with Lithuania. We must show China that we support each other and that we will not allow it to threaten anyone among us, "Janša wrote in a letter published on 13 September.
In a letter, Janša called on the leaders of the union's members to support Lithuania in relation to China at an informal dinner on China and trade, which will take place in Slovenia on October 5, the day before the EU-Western Balkans summit.
Taiwan's foreign ministry, meanwhile, welcomed Jansa's letter. "It is clear that the support of the international democratic camp for the two countries Taiwan and Lithuania is growing stronger," they wrote.
China strongly protested in August as Lithuania approved the opening of a Taiwan office in Vilnius. It recalled its ambassador to Vilnius and demanded that Lithuania withdraw its ambassador from Beijing. Vilnius' decision to allow Taiwan's representation "grossly undermines China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
