Delarverie continued to be an active member of the community throughout her life. She was a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, and she marched in many Pride parades. She also worked with numerous organisations including the Stonewall Veterans Association and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). DeLarverie was a groundbreaking drag performer with a dandyish approach to zoot suits and black tie. While her fellow performers mostly appeared in drag onstage only, she would often walk around New York in her suiting, starting something of a trend."

Growing up in foster care in Norfolk alongside his footballer brother John, he had risen through Norwich City's youth ranks. Already an influential sporting figure, things changed when he came out as gay in 1990: the first professional footballer to do so in England. Fearing being outed by a national newspaper, he came out himself in an interview. Fashanu tragically took his own life in 1998, but his impact in the sporting world has remained. Equality campaigner Amal Fashanu, set up the Justin Fashanu Foundation, dedicated to her uncle. and in 2020, the professional footballer was inducted into the Hall of Fame."

Lady Phyll has long been an advocate for LGBTQIA+ causes, race and gender issues. She is also a trustee at Stonewall and sits on the Trades Union Congress (TUC) race relations committee. She has won numerous awards for her work including the Black LGBT community award, as well as being honoured on the Independent on Sunday Pink List (2011) and the World Pride Power List (2012). In 2016 she publicly refused an MBE. She cited the toxic legacy of British colonialism which has led to laws criminalising gender diversity and outlawing gay relationships across the world. Lady Phyll has spent much of her life addressing, and speaking out against, the intersection of racism and homophobia, tirelessly raising awareness of the experience of her community.
