Tijdens zijn carrière ontwikkelde Martens zijn eigen uitgesproken expressionistische stijl die wordt gekenmerkt door kleurrijke en dynamische composities. Samen met collega-kunstenaars Johan Dijkstra en Jan Wiegers was Martens een van de initiatiefnemers van het kunstcollectief De Ploeg. De Ploeg, wat zich vertaalt naar 'de ploeg', werd in 1918 opgericht als reactie op het toenmalige artistieke klimaat in Groningen. De kunstenaars van de beweging waren van mening dat de grond in Groningen meer gecultiveerd moest worden op het gebied van moderne kunst, waar hun naam vandaan kwam. De historische betekenis van De Ploeg ligt vooral in de jaren twintig, toen zich binnen de groep expressionistische en later impressionistische artistieke stromingen ontwikkelden. Naast onderwerpen als Groningen en landschappen schilderden leden van De Ploeg ook veel portretten van elkaar en hun vrienden.

Tras su regreso de Brasil, Johan Maurits fue nombrado estatúder de Cléveris. Allí fue donde De Baen pintó este retrato, con el jardín que Johan Maurits había diseñado allí al fondo. El retrato irradia poder, tal como Johan Maurits quería ser recordado. Su reputación se debía en gran medida a su papel como gobernador del Brasil holandés, incluso si la WIC lo había despedido por problemas financieros. Esta imagen unilateral hizo que durante siglos se prestara poca atención al papel de Johan Maurits en el tráfico de esclavos.

Brooksville Woman's Club Honors Ten Local Women with Life Palettes Exhibit Sept. 26

The GFWC Historic Brooksville Woman's Club has just kicked off its 114th year and is celebrating with an art exhibit honoring ten Hernando County women who contributed greatly to the area by founding organizations that still impact us today.  It is called the Life Palette Project. The exhibit was inspired by a Waterford, Pennsylvania palette exhibit in which oversized artist paint palettes were constructed from plywood and then commissioned to be painted with local scenes or artist visions by local artists. The concept seemed a good match for the Brooksville Woman's Club, which has a tradition of fostering arts and culture as one of its core pillars from the organization’s beginning.  Life Palettes Exhibit hopes to Showcase the Contributions of Local Women in Art at GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club “I settled on the name Life Palettes because the paintings are intended to capture the essence of the honoree's passions and interests in life.  They are shaped like artist palettes, and I like to imagine each woman crafting out her own legacy in the same way an artist uses their palette to create a painting,” explains Natalie Kahler, current President of the GFWC Historic Brooksville Woman’s Club. The Life Palette Project also provided an unexpected way to showcase the varied and remarkable work of several influential women in our community over the years. Each of the ten influential woman honorees was selected by the Woman’s Club officers. Next, local artists were selected, with the help of the Hernando County Fine Arts Council, to visually honor each woman’s life and contributions to the community. Eleven extraordinary artists paint the lives of ten extraordinary women in the Life Palettes Project put on by the GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club. Images courtesy of GFWC Brooksville Woman's Club. Capturing a Woman's Contributions to the Hernando County Community in Art The chosen artists were given 4’ x 6’ plywood cut in the shape of art palettes by local crafter, Forrester Made.  Each artist was provided research on the woman they'd been assigned and was given free rein to create a piece of art representing the accomplishments of that woman.  However, their palette was not to include a portrait of the woman being represented. The Brooksville Woman’s Club officers began with a long list of eligible women. They decided to focus on women who founded initiatives, projects, and companies that had a large impact on the local community.  The first "test" palette was created by Johan Casadiego. The first palette showed the many contributions of Margaret "Weenie" Rogers Ghiotto.  Weenie is best known for founding Rogers' Christmas House, Brooksville's most famous store for decades. Margaret "Weenie" Rogers Ghiotto's Contributions are Captured in the First Life Palette by Artist Johan Casadiego Beyond her extraordinary retail career, Weenie Rogers also renovated many of the historic homes on Olive Street and planted thousands of dogwood trees in the City. She became the second female member of Brooksville’s City Council - nearly 50 years after Lena Hawkins had been the first! Johan's beautiful palette painting was used to show potential sponsors and artists the kind of painting the Club was looking for and has been a great source of inspiration to many.    The ten honorees whose accomplishments and contributions are being memorialized in this exhibit have contributed to Hernando County in a wide variety of ways:  - Virginia Jackson founded the Hernando Historic Museum Association - Bertha Hancock Ashbrook helped establish the first library and served as the first librarian - Mable Sims wrote and curated "History on Wheels" as a traveling black history museum - Adeline Burnside Chelf established the Brooksville Woman's Club - Jan Knowles has been president of more than 10 community organizations and assisted in founding many of them. Come out to Celebrate the Life Palette Exhibit’s Reveal September 26 The paintings will be unveiled at the GFWC Historic Brooksville Woman's Club on Thursday, September 26.  At 6 pm, artists, honoree family members, sponsors, and VIP ticket purchasers will get to see each painting unveiled individually. Then the exhibit will be opened to the public from 6:30-8:30 pm.  In addition to each Life Palette, attendees will be treated to a poster that explains each woman's accomplishments and can view artifacts at the exhibit representing their efforts. Following the exhibit opening, the palettes will be hung in area businesses through the end of the year and then auctioned off to help pay for next year's round.  For our 115th year, the Brooksville Woman's Club is hoping to commission 50 palette paintings and make it an annual event. By honoring these women, the Brooksville Woman’s Club hopes the Life Palettes exhibit will inspire this generation of leaders to dream and implement ways to make our community stronger.  The exhibit shows that no matter how long you've lived here, whatever your past, regardless of your personal resources, everyone can make a difference if they commit to doing so.
