A Touch of Luck

"As the Apollo 10 crew walks along a corridor on the way to Launch Complex 39B, mission commander Thomas P. Stafford pats the nose of Snoopy, the mission's mascot, held by Jamye Flowers, astronaut Gordon Coopers' secretary.

The Apollo 10 crew nicknamed the Lunar Module (LM) 'Snoopy' and the Command/Service Module (CSM) 'Charlie Brown' after characters in the Charles Schulz comic strip "Peanuts."

Launched on May 18, 1969, the Apollo 10 mission was a 'dress rehearsal' for the lunar landing that occurred later that year.

The mission successfully completed the first manned CSM and LM docking and undocking operations in a lunar environment. Apollo 10 orbited the moon 31 times during its eight-day mission and took the LM to within 50,000 feet of the lunar surface, simulating a lunar landing.

After all these historic 'firsts,' the crew also sent the first live color television from space."

"The Apollo 10 crew leaves the Kennedy Space Center's Manned Spacecraft Operations Building during the Apollo 10 prelaunch countdown. Leading is astronaut John W. Young, command module pilot, followed by astronauts Thomas P. Stafford, commander; and Eugene A. Cernan, lunar module pilot. The transfer van carried them over to Pad B, Launch Complex 39, where their spacecraft awaited them."

Netflix's narrative-based game Immortality is now released

On November 18, 2022, reported by Game Developer, Immortality, the latest game from Telling Lies director Sam Barlow, is now available on mobile via Netflix. According to Netflix's website, in the game Immortality, players can click on actors or props to find the clue for why Marcel has disappeared. 

 Netflix subscribers can play the interactive thriller at no extra cost on their phones. after the release of Netflix’s interactive movie “Bandersnatch” from the show Black Mirror, Netflix has been working on combining the game with their original business - tv shows. This time, immortality helped Netflix to consolidate its position as a platform for narrative-based games. 

Even though this game will not be able to make much money for the game publisher since it is free for Netflix subscribers, it will help them get a wider player for both the game developer and Netflix platform since it is mixing the game player and Netflix lover together. Just like Jamye Figueroa discussed in the New York University lecture, an exclusive game doesn't need to be very profitable, the goal of such a game is to get popularity and help cement the future business for that platform. 

Even though the game is free for Netflix subscribers and the studio is confident that Netflix members could get the "best possible experience". According to the data from Gamespot, Netflix games on mobile have been downloaded 23.3 million times globally and there are only about 1.7 million daily users. This amount of downloads represent less than 1% of Netflix’s 221 million subscribers. 

The narrative-based games did not seem to become as popular as Netflix expected. After the boom of the metaverse which combines real life with games, Netflix is attempting the potential to combine TV shows and movies with games. It is intriguing where did Netflix get its confidence or if it is just their bravado. I am also wondering what is Netflix’s next step to get more people to download their game on the condition that they already make it free.

I remember the day I drew this almost vividly. How excited I was at the idea of drawing our polaroid which I treasured more than any of my valuable things. I had lost a coin purse given to me from Thailand and the polaroid was in it along with my IDs, ATM card and cash which almost didn’t matter. It was when my high school clique and I watched The Spongebob Movie (2015) and my purse somehow slipped in between the movie seats unnoticed. I was devastated to the core. I felt like I lost a huge part of me though it seemed exaggerated. Thankfully, I went back to the same cinema and a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders when the staffs went to check and found it. 

I remember how ecstatic and proud I got with my work as it turned out to be better than I had imagined. I have always treasured every moment I had with you as if conserving it, protecting the memories before time takes them away from me. It’s all I seem to have and be able to keep when it comes to you - the memories. At least once time takes you away from me, I’ll have them. 

So I wouldn’t really lose you.
