My Ted Lasso Re-watch: S1E6 (part 1)
Two Aces
Someone give Ted a hug. He's all alone and sad. Sudeikis really sells the emotional moments in this show.
Manic, fast talking Ted, trying to not let on that anything is wrong. He isn't trying to be positive, he's just trying to deflect his own attention away from his thoughts and not give Nate and Beard an opportunity to ask him about things.
Ted looks good in red. Well, he looks good in anything, but red and blue especially. The bit with the jumper is cute. And his hair in that scene, I want to mess it up so bad. And the strand of hair that keeps on falling out of place, oh honey (I will never apologise for finding that man attractive, even for the smallest thing. A dishevelled Ted is a hot Ted).
Ted doesn't like the word bury and it's negative connotation, because of his dad.
You can not get anything past Beard, he knows all and sees all. Also he was there for Ted after Michelle and Henry left so he knew what was up already.
I love Trent Crimm - The Independent. Enough said.
'Not talk like that at work anymore' Why Ted, what kind of masterstroke did you think Rebecca was talking about?
Ted's reactions to stuff is gold. It's slightly over the top but not so it's unbelievable.
The semantic satiation bit with the word plan, Ted only says it 4 times before it loses meaning. And the way he says plan when mimicking Rebecca, how his voice just goes softer... Am I really gonna thirst for Ted during this episode? Probably.
Rebecca is a busy woman, yet she still indulges Ted in his ramblings.
Beard's 'oh boy' because he knows shit is about to go down. Ted is done with Jamie's bullshit.
It was in this moment that everyone knew Jamie fucked up. Even the guys around Jamie know to leave when Ted turns back to confront him. If Jamie wasn't so smug, Ted wouldn't have gone off on him like he did. Never piss off the nice person, what they say will hurt more than you think and you know you've gone too far.
Ted says practice 11 times during to speech to Jamie but the word still has meaning, compared to plan and aces where he says it a few times.
Jamie starts out smug, thinking that Ted is a pushover, nothing he says matters. And he's like that until Ted really starts shouting at him, when we get the Dutch Angle. We see the difference in both Ted and Jamie. Ted for the first time is genuinely angry, a side very few probably see, and Jamie has gone quiet because he's being reminded of when his dad shouts at him.
This is one of the few times I've seen a Dutch Angle used perfectly (here's looking at you Twilight. You're an example of how not to use it). A good example would be in the first Mission: Impossible film when Ethan sits down with Kitridge.
Ted's while speech is a reimagining of the Iverson speech. Sudeikis being a basketball fan would know of it and figured out a way to use it for his own intentions. Giving it a new meaning that's just as effective as when Iverson said it.
When done shouting Ted just walks away, giving Jamie no time to talk back or argue with him. Ted is in control over the situation, as opposed to the previous episode where Jamie was the one in control.
Everyone now respects Ted a bit more now. Probably and especially Roy.
Ted is still hot when he's angry. God damn it.
Beard is smiling in the office because he knows that Ted finally put Jamie in his place, something that needed to be be.
Schadenfreude - taking pleasure in another's pain. Nate enjoying what happened to Jamie is just an indication of later behaviours that will pop up.

He said that he was bigger but I guess that it’s not enough (what?)
Check the Spotify numbers, he outta luck
I’m powered up, promise you won’t be waiting long
And everything I drop gon be leaving your brains blown
While yall boys still be making the same songs
Repetitive; spitting sedatives in cyclones
Stuck on your cable box and iPhones
Looking like Jamie Foxx and Tyrone
But I’m the only one that Allen Iverson can’t clone
Hope you practiced for the night cause the game’s on

Post Malone -By Mairead H.
Post Malone ( Austin Richard Post ) was born in Syracuse, New York, and was raised by his father Richard Post and his step mom Jodie. His father was a DJ in his youth and introduced him to genres like hip hop, pop, country and rock. When Post was 9, he moved to Grapevine Texas when his father got a job with the Dallas Cowboys. Post Malone went to Tarrant County College, but soon dropped out and moved to Las Angeles with his friend.
When in LA, Post Malone and some other musicians formed a group called BLCKBRD and recorded music together. In 2015 Post Malone published his first song, “White Iverson'', which peaked at #14 on the US Billboard Hot 100. White Iverson earned the award “Best Hip-Hip Song”, in 2015 by The Boom Box Fan Choice Awards. In August 2015, Post Malone released his first album, Stoney. Stoney consists of these songs, Deja Vu, Feel, Big Lie, Money Made Me Do It, Hit This Hard, Broken Whiskey Glass, Congratulations, I Fall Apart, White Iverson, Up There, Yours Truly, Go Flex, To Young, Leave, Cold, No Option, Feeling Whitney, and Patient.
Post Malone is currently 27 years old and has a fiance and daughter. Post Malone's fiance is named Jamie, and little is known about her. They both welcomed their daughter in May of 2022, and have released little information about their family and daughter. Post Malone's most current album, released in 2022, is named Hollywood's Bleeding. “I feel like, in L.A. and Hollywood, there's such a strange vibe to where it just feels like there's a lot of vampires out there that just want to suck the life from you,” Malone said in an interview with Spotify on his inspiration for the album. Post Malone is working on a new album named Twelve Carat Toothache. He has been nominated for a total of 9 Grammys, but unfortunately has not won any, yet. “There were some times when I just wanted to quit making music,” Post Malone says.

Right on. I headcanon Nathan as autistic (he is heavily Rain Man-coded in S1), so I can totally see him not knowing when he's gone too far in a social situation. He lacks the intuitive stopping point that many people have naturally.
Isaac emerges as a very nurturing leader in S2. But by that point, as you said, Nathan's been shit on for too long. I think by the end of S2, Nathan can no longer see the good (or even the neutral) aspects of the players. All he sees is spoiled bullies five minutes away from beating him again. All players are the same; all players are a threat or an obstacle. (Which, as someone who works in a hierarchal setting where a certain class of workers are allowed to shit on my class of workers, is a Mood. It's not a Good Mood or one I'd recommend, but it's relatable.) To be honest, I don't think Ted talking about Isaac being a "big dog" helped dispel Nathan's misconceptions.
I think you're right that Nathan has clocked Ted's fixation on Jamie, and that he's trying to get in on some of that however he can. In addition to that, I think Nathan is also responding to Ted's leadership style. Ted struggles with confrontation, and wants to be seen as the "good guy." He relies on other people to be the "bad guy" (for example, Allen Iverson, Led Tasso, and Nathan at Everton). In S2, Nathan assumes the "bad guy" role more and more because his upbringing has made him think that the team (like his family) needs to have a good guy and a bad guy. And if it makes his mother Ted love him more, well...
rewatching the first couple seasons of ted lasso and it is fascinating to see the hints of nate’s later character—when he’s not timid, he does tend to insult people and go on the offensive—he’s clearly got some deeply-held issues and impulses that he needs to evaluate, like being rude or cruel equates to being powerful and in-charge
also the comedy is still top-fucking-notch

Idea for any Roy/Jaime fic: Ted and the others come to realize that when Ted was yelling at Jaime about practice a la Allen Iverson, Jaime sat there with his jaw clenched, the cockiness gone, and he just took it. They come to realize that with Jaime's history Ted might have turned into James Tartt for just a moment and the very thought of that sickens all of them. Jaime's totally confused when everyone, even Roy is super affectionate towards him when they all come to training the next day.
Oh, I loved that scene!
And it was so telling when you realise later why Jamie reacted like that.
I'm adding this to my prompts because yes, this needs to be acknowledged, along with some other telling moments - like Jamie flinching at Dani's over-zealous introduction, and just Jamie's general bitchiness as a sign of transference.
Damn, now I have an excuse to re-watch both seasons as research to see if there's anything else.
Please, readers, send me ideas if you spotted any signs, reactions, comments, or telling moments from S1 to pre 'Man City' in S2.

Okay, I have to say, I have seen a number of people talk about the scene where Ted gives a modified Allen Iverson speech to Jamie in Two Aces, and I have no idea where they're coming from.
Does Ted yell at Jamie? Yes...kind of. It's more of a speech than a shout, after all. More insistent rather than loud.
Does Jamie have a history of abuse that Ted, at this time, is unaware of? Yes.
But there's no indication to me, watching that scene, that Jamie is remotely triggered by Ted's speech. He doesn't "shut down" during it. His expression is very clear: he's uncomfortable and irritated. And as we see when he IMMEDIATELY tries to foist his task onto Colin afterward, he's pretty much undeterred.
And I think we forget that while, yes, Jamie is an abused kid who is lashing out because he's hurt. He's ALSO a prick and a bully, whose selfish and malicious behavior has actively hurt this team. He'd avoided consequences so far because he's amazingly talented, and there was at least a perception that the team wouldn't succeed without him.
And then in Tan Lines, for the very first time, he experiences consequences for his actions. He got benched. So now he's trying to pull a power play and retaliate. "Okay, if you won't give me the deference I deserve, I won't play at all."
As an authority figure, Ted HAS to respond to that. For the team as a whole, not just Jamie specifically. (But for Jamie too.)
But let's say Ted just tells Jamie to set out cones. He won't do it. He'll storm off, like he did after Biscuits. Like he did AT HALFTIME in Tan Lines. And honestly, Jamie's probably lucky there weren't far more consequences for that!
At some point, if someone doesn't rein this kid in, Jamie's behavior is going to reach the point where his talent can't save him. (Which is exactly what ends up happening in season two.)
So the speech. The interesting thing about the speech, aside from the original's content and the historical context of course, is that it's not something that Iverson said to a fellow player. It's not from a one-on-one confrontation. It's from a press conference. It's directed outward. (It might also be interesting to analyze the speech, particularly the original version's roots in Iverson's grief and loss at the time, in the context of Ted's own arc. But that's for its own blog post.)
Ted gives his version of this speech, not to Jamie, per se, but to the team as a whole. And that's where it has its impact. The TEAM has just realized that for all that Jamie is prodigiously talented, that talent doesn't make him more important than they are, and it doesn’t mean that he's immune to consequence. Colin and Isaac respond accordingly, and Jamie has to do his own work.
It did exactly what it was supposed to do. And maybe planted a few seeds for Jamie himself, farther down the line. (Jamie gets to see what a real authority figure who wants him to succeed while imposing appropriate consequences actually looks like. Even if he doesn't really recognize that yet.)
There was a point where things might have been different though: that locker room moment in Tan Lines, where we can see Ted's temper start to fray. He's not a saint, and his own issues combined with Jamie's attitude, may well have led into something a little more (verbally) vicious than either one would have really been able to handle. But fortunately, Henry saved us all from that. And Ted was able to adjust his tactics accordingly, for the benefit of himself, Jamie and the team as a whole.
#ted lasso#theodore lasso#jamie tartt#there are pages and pages of meta that we could write about these two

— was that IVY WOOD passing through diagon alley? yes, i think so… people around them say they remind them of fistfulls of glitter being released into the air, an unabashed willingness to try again and again…..endlessly, the radiating warmth of sunshine on your soul, bedazzled bats, the sound of your name echoing through a stadium, and, compassion enough to make up for whatever else she may be lacking, which i suppose seems to fit that HUFFLEPUFF. they’re actually pretty FREE-SPIRITED, SPARKLY, and ENTHUSIASTIC for a TWENTY-FOUR year old, but i wonder if it serves them well when working as a BEATER for the MONTROSE MAGPIES & SCOTTISH NATIONAL TEAM? have you heard that rumor has it that that PUREBLOOD has stayed NEUTRAL? i wouldn’t have guessed… but this is a conversation we should be having somewhere else. – pinterest || playlist

BIO
a PROUD card-holding member of the Wood Family Quidditch Dynasty™
are you surprised? the bedazzled bat is her signature
like her cousins (sorry, jamie), aunt, and uncle - ivy was born for the sport, and her path towards a pro career was as much a given as that of her cousins - again, so sorry, jamie
her father, though ... it really wasn’t his thing, so, as a child, the young, glittery monstrosity saw plenty of the boring ministry’s walls – and hated practically every minute of it
her mother didn’t play, either, but neither parent ever considered not supporting her ..... vicious enthusiasm for the sport
she is an only child, though, so ... that shows sometimes
no matter how much she loves her family
and if anyone asks – and many have – ivy tends to credit growing up with the family she did as the secret behind her powerful batting arm
playing with ferocity was never not an option
she had options upon her graduation from hogwarts (proud hufflepuff, y’all) but still chose to sign on the dotted line with uncle lachlan – and even then, he assured her, she would never be guaranteed a starting spot
he wasn’t lying, but the spot is hers regardless, and she dares you to name a beater in the league she should be fearful to face off with
and to put the cherry on top of her insane hard work and dedication to her craft ... ivy was invited to the Scottish National Team
to her, it’s a true honor, and one she’s proud to have achieved
anyways, everything she owns is covered in glitter
e v e r y t h i n g
when she’s not on the pitch ... and she very frequently is ... she tends to look as though she’s about to hit the hottest spot in town
as far as she’s concerned, though, wherever she ends up is the place to be
she has so many hobbies - designing, baking, crafting, knitting ...
lying about knitting
you name it, she’s probably tried it
she likes to be busy
she is a meddler, and she will meddle in your life every chance you give her (and even when you don’t)
she is also incredibly prone to dramatics, and schemes, and if you aren’t careful, she’ll drag you straight into her shenanigans
she’s a sweetheart, though, and fiercely loyal to the people she loves
but she’s not a fool, no matter what impression she gives off from day to day; ivy is a fairly good judge of character, and is careful to only give her true self to the people who love her best
that’s not to say you’re likely to run afoul of the girl, however – though. should you find that you have, beware of glitter bombs: a shower of stupidity for the world to see
for the most part, ivy is genuinely warm and kind, and though she does have the overstuffed ego of so many other athletes of her calibre, her ego should always be taken with a grain of salt; the girl is about as down to earth as they come
and that’s pretty impressive, considering she’d always rather be on a broom.

N A M E: Chloe Rey A G E: Thirty-Six O C C U P A T I O N: Penelope Sinclair’s PA L O Y A L T Y: Sinclair Crime Family
SOME RISE BY SIN, AND SOME BY VIRTUE FALL.
Chloe Rey was born in Manhattan, New York to a wealthy and privileged family. Her mother is a fashion designer and her father is a well sought after attorney. It was always his dream for his daughter to follow in his footsteps and for a while, she did. She began to attend law school and was excited about the prospect of her own firm. But the glitter and excitement eventually faded, and while Chloe was smart enough to be in the law field, she didn’t want to just be a drone to the system. Eager to pursue something more exciting, she began to travel to the country’s biggest cities to see what the world could offer her. When she landed in Chicago, she heard through a friend of a friend that the wife of a mob boss needed a personal assistant. It wasn’t her dream career by any means, but it was influential and that’s what she wanted. She wanted to be seen, known as a strong, independent woman. Chloe was so focused on herself and her empire, she didn’t even realize she had met her future husband.
She didn’t notice Wyatt at first, but it didn’t take long for her to realize how important he was. Morgan was always turning and whispering, the men speaking in hushes if it was business related. The four would sit at a table while Morgan and Penny would discuss their schedules or other manners and Chloe found herself staring into his dark brown eyes. He was quiet when he felt any mood other than anger, he was gentle and observant. When he asked her out on a date, she agreed, purely out of fascination with him. He had been bonded to the Sinclair family since birth, despite what Wyatt thought, Chloe knew - he never had a choice. Destiny plunged him onto his path when he was nothing but a child and that fact saddened her. It was obvious he had underlying issues, never a mention of a mother. A deceased father. No blood family that she knew of, it’s silly now to look back on it, but she should’ve known from the beginning. He struggled to show her affection, he couldn’t get the things that men did to “catch” women. Never any flowers, any gifts, any talks of the future. But she wasn’t ready to give up yet, so Chloe moved in with Wyatt.
Things moved quickly from there, another year, another milestone. They became engaged and she couldn’t believe he had picked her perfect ring. This gave her hope, maybe he had been listening after all. They got married and then...well, she wasn’t sure what it was she was waiting for. Neither of them brought up the future, they had never talked about leaving the Sinclairs or Chicago. Never talked about a house or children. The fact slowly sunk into Chloe’s mind that while, Wyatt was a good man, he was already married long before her. To the Sinclair family and they had no real future together. His distance issues kept them arguing constantly and Chloe had enough. She filed for divorce. She’s happy to still stay friendly with him for their jobs’ sake, but deep down she does find it difficult to be in his presence. While everything that happened in their relationship wasn’t always perfect, she did love him. A part of her probably still does.
The wedding approaching has caused a rift in Penny and Morgan’s relationship and Chloe is trying desperately to keep everyone calm and collected. Paisley is the unofficial “favorite child” of Penelope’s and the fact she’s being married to Luca Costello, has Penelope not pleased. Morgan assures her it’s the right thing to do, but Chloe can see her the anger in her bosses eyes and is hoping the day goes off without a hitch.
CONNECTIONS:
— Relationship Status: Divorced/Single — Other: Wyatt Iverson (Ex Husband)
FC: Jamie Chung
The role of CHLOE REY is currently OPEN.

A LISTENER’S JOURNAL, #26: SAMPLING SUGGESTIONS FROM 2019 BEST JAZZ ALBUM LISTS, Part 1
I still rely on critics’ year end lists to discover gems and keep up with developments in the music, even as I listen to jazz more and more. I don’t have my own full lists, instead noting the occasional favorite and trends that aren’t necessarily calendar bound. I also have more catching up to do than mere archival releases capture.
So, here, finally, is a listener’s journal that is an actual journal written in real time.
CHICK COREA/CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE/BRIAN BLADE--TRILOGY 2
I guess I returned to serious jazz listening just after the predecessor album was released. I may have dipped into it a little in preparation for his May 2018 run at Jazz St. Louis, but I didn’t study it. I will—and this one too. That 2018 show was a reminder of just how good—inventive, grounded yet forward thinking—Corea is. In his late 70s now, he is still an imp, alive, alert, and amused. It was there in the club and it’s here on this recording. It’s a strong set of standards, creatively stretched, including some standards composed by the pianist—“La Fiesta” and a nicely refracted “500 Miles High.” They also do “Now He Sings, Now He Sobs.” Two Monk tunes too.McBride evokes Ray Brown in this trio setting and Blade is one of those drummer/magicians that are a constant delight and discovery.
ETHAN IVERSON QUARTET--COMMON PRACTICE
Iverson continues to surprise me. I have more familiarity with The Bad Plus 2.0 with Orrin Evans than his tenure in the band. I saw 1.0 once and he was probably checking out. I think I like Evans more as Iverson was, I thought, too in his head, too ECM.But last year, his album with Mark Turner was a delight (and I also found them in the Billy Hart Quartet). To be fair, all those works and this one are on ECM.Here there are standards, reasonably straight ahead but with some very nice deconstructions (an out of sync left and right hand chorus on “I Get Sentimental Over You” and a stretching of “All the Things You Are.” This is Iverson?
Tom Harrell’s dry, smart, spare trumpet is key too. I don’t know him enough, so I’m glad for this reminder.
FRANK ZAPPA--THE HOT RATS SESSIONS
This isn’t on any lists, but it was important to me at the time and probably did contribute to fusion. So I gave it all a listen. It is fascinating to watch tunes take shape and components layered in production. I am in the Shut Up and Play Your Guitar camp, so the long long jams with violin (maybe Jean Luc-Ponty, otherwise Sugarcane Harris) are a treat. They are not composed, even as a launching pad. They are blues as a way, I imagine, for them to learn to play together. There are some tunes that Zappa-philes will recognize as resurfacing later.
There probably is a 2 CD highlights compilation that could be made as a Spotify playlist. But having all 6 on the record is a good thing.
THE NORTH PLAYS THE MUSIC OF KENNY WHEELER
I don’t know these solid, respectful players (Percy Purslove, David Braid, Johnny Aman, Mike Murley, and Anders Mogensten) and have begun to know Kenny Wheeler just some from covers, including Fred Hersch’s, of “Everyone’s Song But My Own,” Ingrid Jensen’s “Invisible Sounds,” and a smattering of his own albums, especially the remarkable “Angel Eyes” with Lee Konitz.
Wheeler is an impressive composer and “Everyone’s Song” and “Kind Folk” (nicely reprised here) are becoming pleasingly familiar and recognizable. The recording made a Canadian list and the band and Wheeler (Jensen too) are tied to the country. Their national pride is justified and I welcome such reminders to get to know Wheeler better. He is a strong trumpeter/flugelhornist but the tunes are appealing and nicely crafted. The North’s performances are more reverential than swinging. But they can swing.
LEE KONITZ/KENNY WHEELER QUARTET--LIVE AT BIRDLAND NIEBLING
This genius pairing is the basis for Wheeler’s superb “Angel Eyes” and this follow up came out in 2006 with a reissue in 2016 as “Olden Times.” I’m glad there’s more of them, though Bill Frisell and Dave Holland are replaced by strong German players on piano and bass. Again, no drummer which is interesting.
This is Konitz’s date, so he is more in charge of compositions and covers. Like Wheeler, he is someone I am belatedly getting to know. I recently wrote about bebop improvisers (Parker, Powell, Jackson, and Brown) with a fascination with their melodic and real time compositional skills. Konitz fits in there too though he comes from a slightly different place.
This is a great context for Wheeler and shows that he can improvise in a very compositional way. “Kind Folk” and “Onmo” from “Angel Eyes” and The North’s album are welcome contributions to this date.
But Konitz is once again and always so smart and liquid with long lines. He weaves paragraphs.
PAUL BLEY/GARY PEACOCK/PAUL MOTIAN--WHEN WILL THE BLUES LEAVE
Piano trios are my thing, so getting to know this ensemble through this release of a 1999 concert is an opportunity. I know Motian the best through being part of THE trio with Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro and then his 1970s work with Keith Jarrett’s American band. I think of him as a colorist more than a timekeeper. Peacock is the Standards trio with Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. As with Motian’s commentary, he is here, too, in character as a strong voice of adventure.
Alas, I know Bley even less well—and it’s his date. He has lots of ideas and draws on a refracted long history of the instrument. He etches tight sometimes jagged lines and/or lets chords shimmer almost serenely. The title cut is from Ornette and that says something. The encore is “I Loves You, Porgy” which provides illuminating reference points to the logic of the rest of the program of Bley mostly and Peacock originals.
The critical commentary suggests that this band, had it recorded more, would have deserved to wield significant influence. Had this set been released 20 years ago, they might have. For that, I give them and Bley serious appreciation. But I am more likely to return to the Corea/McBride/Blade project more often which says at least as much about me as about the band.
THE BAD PLUS--ACTIVATE INFINITY
I will see this band for their annual early January residency in St. Louis. I want to live with this album over the next week. Doing so in the context also of the Bley and Corea will be instructive.
First impressions—I have The BP conventions down and there is a comfortable familiarity with the compositional styles of Reid Anderson and Dave King. That is, this sounds completely like The Bad Plus. Orrin Evans was a welcome breath of fresh air for me as a listener coming late to this party. As I said re: his quartet album above, I probably saw a more disengaged Ethan Iverson or I just like Evans more. But, I’m rethinking that in terms of the things I like that Iverson has done since leaving the band.
I’m going to live with this music for a week or so. Besides having The Bad Plus “homework” to do, I have Bley and Corea rabbit holes to pursue. Listening to Iverson’s work in juxtaposition to The BP 2.0 will let me nibble at the original BP question. And more Konitz and Wheeler will be a treat.
So there will be more installments in this series. More keyboards—Iyer/Taborn, Taborn with the BPers King and Anderson, Kris Davis. Trumpeters—Yazz Ahmad, Jamie Branch, Christian Scott a Tunde, and Dave Douglas. Reissues if I can get at them—Bill Evans in England, Charles Lloyd at Montreux in 1967, and Stan Getz. A grab bag of Theon Cross, Mantana Rogers, and Allison Miller’s projects.
