tagged by @jamesleoherlihy (thank you 💗) to post my favorite first watches of may. late spring was my favorite and im gonna continue on my ozu (setsuko hara) journey into june, staircase was batshit iconic gay cinema, watching 50ft woman on the floor of my sister’s living room with half a bottle of wine was my favorite may viewing experience, tough guys was bad—im gonna watch it five more times, and bonjour tristesse was a great edition to my summer bummers watchlist.

119 Midnight Cowboy by James Leo Herlihy adapted by Chris Hainsworth dir Christopher M. Walsh for Lifeline Theatre. I read the novel Midnight Cowboy before I ever saw the film. This was back in 1989, when your only source for movies was Video Stores and you relied on their stock. And very view stores were carrying X rated movies from 1969, even if they did win Best Picture. Because in 1969, the subject matter got the film an X rating, and now you could show it uncut on broadcast TV. When I finally saw the film a few years after that, while acknowledging it’s classic status, I was struck by how much I missed the people who shaped Joe from his past. The betrayal of Perry, the raw emotional need of Anastasia Pratt. The beatitude for the lonesome, that wasn’t just Joe’s, but EVERYONE’S. The only indication was a hazy flashback of a traumatic event. So when I found myself as an ensemble member at a theatre company that adapts literature, I submitted it. I have many conflicting emotions about this show. It’s hard to write about. I am too close to it. It was a risk for Lifeline, this was not our usual fare. Opening weekend I was outside at intermission, when three old ladies came out saying “Well that’s a first, I’ve never walked out of a Lifeline show!” Then they noticed me and said “Sorry” and I told them our next show was a musical Jane Austen piece and they said “Thank goodness!” I had seven different directors interested at various times, six of which passed for other work. Thankfully Mr. Walsh took it on. Everyone gave 100% but we had a hard time getting an audience. Some of that was due to the lackluster critical response. It was a frustrating experience as a writer. I had such a specific vision for what I wanted to see, that I was a giant pain in the ass to everybody. In the end - I should have pitched myself as director or let it go. I’m proud of the cast and director for their work, which was brave and vulnerable.
