-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You sit beside Katie, Kendallâs little sister, whoâs currently working on earning a quick buck or two from the âpool jockiesâ as you and Camille like to call them. You glance over at her cards and see that sheâs close to winning another round of go fish.Â
The jockies canât grasp the basic rules of poker so you came up with a compromise and chose a classic game of go fish.Â
You lean over and whisper, âthe one across from you has queens and the one to your left has seven.âÂ
âYouâre sure?âÂ
âIâm right about the queens. You just need one more than the one on your right and youâll win.âÂ
âOkay.âÂ
Thanks to your little tip, she won which none of them liked.Â
âIf you donât want to lose, then donât play,â you advise.Â
The one that sits across from Katie scoffs, heading back inside, most likely getting his luggage to go home for winter break.Â
âItâs been a while since you had something to eat. Do you want me to get you anything from the snack machine?âÂ
âI think Iâm gonna head inside and go play some video games. You can join me since Kendallâs at the studio, finishing up their latest album.âÂ
You smile, âalright. Be prepared to lose to the master.âÂ
âOh, youâre on. Oh, actually can you get some candy. Mom wants to try this weird candy recipe and I was supposed to ask Kendall, but you know, I was in the zone before he left.âÂ
You nod, âyeah, sure. Anything specific?âÂ
âNo gummies and no chocolate.âÂ
âThat leaves room for a lot of choices, doesnât it?âÂ
She raises her arms, âIâm not the one who made the recipe.âÂ
âYeah, yeah.âÂ
âIâll wait with you.âÂ
âYou donât have to do that.âÂ
âYouâre the only other person here besides my brother and his idiot friends who is actually nice to me. My mom also wouldnât like it if I came up without you.âÂ
âAww, whoâs a mamaâs girl.â You pull out a dollar from your pocket, reaching for your bag when you realize you left it at the table. âHey, can you do me a quick favor and grab my bag. I want to make sure I get enough for your mom. Youâve got me curious about her future creation.âÂ
She nods.Â
You push the buttons for the candy when a shadow blocks the light, turning you find one of the guys from the game.Â
âHey, chubbs.âÂ
You furrow your brows, hoping heâll go away before Katie comes back.Â
âMaybe if you didnât eat all this junk, youâd lose a pound or two.âÂ
âJust because Iâm getting candy, doesnât mean itâs for me.âÂ
âIsnât that what they all say.âÂ
You furrow your brows, âyou donât have to be a jerk.âÂ
âYou donât have to be a jerk, cry me a river. Quite eating this crap,â he smacks the item out of your hands. âItâs not for you.âÂ
You donât look up, keeping your eyes on the floor.Â
âCanât even look away from it for a second. Pathetic.âÂ
He walks away when one of his buddies calls him over.Â
Katie stands beside you, handing you your bag. âAre you okay?âÂ
You put a brave face on and nod. âYep, all good. Now, letâs get your mom the candy so she can get started on it.âÂ
Katie overheard what the jerk said and wants to make you feel better, but sheâs never been good at it. Sheâs not letting you go back to your apartment until you absolutely have to, no one should be sad or alone during the holidays. Her eyes widen at the amount of candy you got. âOkay. I think weâre more than okay. This is already a lot more than what I planned on getting.âÂ
âYou sure?âÂ
She nods, âdefinitely.â She grabs the candy from you and holds it close to her chest. âLetâs go. If she gets started now, she can be done but the time the boys get back.âÂ
âYou guys donât have any holiday plans?âÂ
âWe did but then everyone canceled so weâre stuck here but now you can hang out with us.âÂ
âOh, I can? I feel honored.âÂ
âMy mom loves you.âÂ
âIâve only met her once.âÂ
âAnd she thought you really nice. Wait, until she hears about you helping me win.âÂ
You push the elevator close door button, wanting to get to their apartment faster. âDonât you dare.âÂ
âShe wonât believe me anyway.âÂ
âHa!âÂ
The young girl shakes her head, smiling, feeling proud of herself for bed able to keep you happy⌠even if itâs only temporary. She has an idea that maybe you donât actually like what you see. She sees the baggy clothes you wear to hide yourself; it makes more sense with what that jerk told you earlier. âYou look nice by the way,â Katie tells you, keeping her attention on the elevator doors.Â
âOh,â you whisper, not expecting her to say that. You glance down at your usual jean and sneaker combo followed by your cute festive, semi tight Christmas holiday shirt with a black jacket to keep you warm. âThanks. I like your shoes.âÂ
She smirks, you had given her Christmas shoes laces as a joke not expecting her to wear them of course but here you are. âI know.âÂ
-
âWeâre back,â the child announces, walking into the apartment.Â
âWhoâs we exactly?â Her mom asks, the last time she tried to get Katie a friend it turned out to be an adult who then stole her car- or rental car, it was a blur after realizing it was a car that was in her possession was stolen. âOh,â she notices you, standing in the doorway and smiles. âCome on in. Iâm so happy itâs you. How are you?â She hugs you, you weakly hug her back.Â
The negative thoughts try to enter your mind again. âShe pities you. Forever the fat pitied girl.â You give her a weak smile. âWe got the last ingredient you needed for your latest creation.âÂ
âOh, thatâs so sweet but Iâm pretty sure my daughter was supposed to tell her brother to get it.âÂ
âShe mentioned something like that, but I figured why not try the vending machine first. Save a few bucks, you know.âÂ
âI knew I liked you for a reason.âÂ
âWeâre gonna play games.â Katie tries to pull you towards the couch when her mom stops her.Â
âOh no. You promised to help me.âÂ
âBut-âÂ
âIt could be fun.âÂ
âDonât side with her, please.âÂ
âYou two could make Christmas cookies.âÂ
âOh, yay. Iâve been waiting make some myself but-â âSheâs gonna think your fat, talking about cookies.â âI- uh- never found the time.âÂ
âLetâs make the cookies⌠from scratch.âÂ
âI donât like the look you have on your face, Katie,â you tell the young girl.Â
The smile never leaving her face.Â
âHow about Mrs. Knight and I switch places?âÂ
âFirst, itâs Ms. Knight. And no, you two can make the cookies.â She turns to you, âI have faith that youâll make sure the cookies come out right. Katie just wants to throw flour on you.âÂ
You nod, âI figured as much.âÂ
The older woman smiles, patting your arm, âyouâre gonna have fun.âÂ
A nervous chuckle escapes you, âI donât know.âÂ
âYou will and while you do, Iâll be over there on the couch reading a book.âÂ
âFabio?âÂ
The mother of the apartment says nothing.Â
âHave fun with your book.âÂ
She nods and heads over to the couch, getting comfortable.Â
âAlright,â you turn to Katie, âwhat flavor are we making?âÂ
âChocolate chip.âÂ
âExcellent choice.â You order her to get all of the items and ingredients youâll need and remind her of the sweet outcome whenever she huffs and puffs.Â
âNow can we make the cookies?âÂ
âYep, letâs get started.â You tell her which ingredients you need while you do the mixing.Â
You two sit and play hangman while you two wait for the cookies to finish cooking. âSeriously? You used the word ambrosia. How was I supposed to guess that?âÂ
She smirks, âdonât order me around.âÂ
âOh,â you shake your head, âyouâre evil.âÂ
âI donât think so.âÂ
âOf course, you donât.â The timer on the microwave dings. âIâll check on the cookies.âÂ
The boys enter the apartment and slump against the couch, two on each side of Kendall and Katieâs mom. âI smell cookies,â says Carlos, with a confused expression.Â
âI do too,â Logan and James add.Â
âMom?âÂ
âAsk your sister,â she flips another page of her book.Â
âOkay, Katie. I-â You scream, almost dropping the hot tray of cookies. âGeez.â You grab a towel and set it on the counter before setting the tray down.Â
The boys stare at the tray of heavenly smelling cookies... all except for James, whoâs jaw is open as he stares at you.Â
Katie sits beside Logan who sits beside her brother, watching this whole thing with amusement.Â
âThey think your fat for making cookies... even though they look like they want one.â You purse your lips at this next thought. âThey can eat them without the sugar going to their hips.â You avoid her gaze and turn towards the sink, washing the dishes so Ms. Knight doesnât have to.Â
Carlos and Logan glance at one another, eyes switching between each other and the cookies.Â
The brainiac shakes his head, the helmet lover nods; this goes on for a couple of minutes until Carlos reaches for a cookie and hisses.Â
âThe cookies just came out. You saw her take them out,â Katie points out.Â
âBut- itâs cookies,â the corndog lover weakly argues.Â
âThey have to cool.âÂ
âBut I want cookies.âÂ
You dry your hands on a napkin and slowly turn around. âIf I,â you pause when the five turn to give you, their attention. âIf I get you some cookies, will you stop trying to grab them off the hot cookie sheet?âÂ
The boys nod.Â
Katie gets out of the chair before you asked her to get you plates.Â
You scoop a couple of cookies onto each plate and slide them in front of each boy, not forgetting to give a plate to Katie and her mom.Â
A small smile tugs at the corner of your lips.Â
âDonât you want to try some?â You shake your head with a polite smile, âno, thanks for offering though Katie.âÂ
She furrows her brows. âBut you said-âÂ
âI- I decided that Iâm gonna stop eating so much candy.âÂ
She knows where youâre going with this and what thoughts are running around your mind.Â
âOh, okay. Well. Iâm sure I can whip up something else,â Ms. Knight offers, collecting the boysâ plates.Â
You shake your head, âit's- its fine. I should go back to my place.â You walk around the counter, grabbing your bag off the table. âThank you so much for letting me hangout here.âÂ
âDo you h-ave to go?â asks James, voice cracking halfway through. âYou could- we could hang- hang out?âÂ
An uncomfortable smile stretches across your lips. âI- I would but, I have to go. Maybe some other time?â You add even though you donât really mean it, thinking he was just being nice to the âfatâ girl.Â
âOh, yeah. Okay, next time.âÂ
A quiet, âbyeâ slips past your lips before the door closes shut.Â
-
The boys or Katieâs mom didnât see you much after that day. They couldnât find you when it was only everyone in the apartment, Kelly, Gustavo, and Snoop Dog who were stuck at the studio.Â
Katie wanted to invite you to stay and hangout with them since she knows your family always have plans, leaving you here alone. She was lucky to have found you a few days after everyone came back from break.Â
âHow was your guyâs Christmas?â you ask her, sitting in the cabana.Â
âNot better than yours.âÂ
âSomehow I donât believe that.âÂ
-
Just because the boys havenât talked to you since you made cookies, doesnât mean they havenât seen you.Â
Every time James sees you, he forgets everything he was doing or thinking.Â
The others always encourage him to try and ask you out (not just because theyâre tired of hearing him go on and on about you) but he always gives them some sort of excuse as to why he canât or shouldnât making it even weirder because... itâs James. But they see how he is whenever heâs near you and know that he has a big time crush on you.Â
-
Kendall pulls together an idea, knowing that you and Katie are hanging out by the pool as usual so naturally he calls, more like yanks, Carlos and Logan with him.Â
âOperation: Get James a date is happening today.âÂ
âToday? Like today-today? Weâre not ready,â Logan tells him.Â
âIt happens and he will get a date with the one person who can get him to use less of his body spray.âÂ
âHow are we gonna do that?â asks Carlos.Â
âIâm glad you asked.âÂ
They rope James into coming over and helping them with their fake plan.Â
âOkay, James. Iâm gonna be honest with you right now,â Kendall starts.Â
âWe lied!â Logan blurts out.Â
âThatâs not what we agreed to do.â The leader smacks the brainiacs shoulder, who whines as he holds his arm.Â
âIâm sorry, I couldnât hold it in anymore. He should know. He needs to know what weâre doing here.âÂ
âWhat exactly are we doing here?â The pretty boy chimes in.Â
âWeâre helping you ask out the only nice girl here.â Carlos glances over at the offended duo and sighs, correcting himself. âWho isnât dating anyone.âÂ
âWhat?â James eyes widen. âYouâre trying to get me to ask her out?! No. No. No.âÂ
âYou can do it,â Carlos encourages him.Â
âItâs all going to be fine,â Kendall pats his shoulder.Â
âTake these flowers,â Logan shoves the bundle of flowers into his friendsâ hand, âand go find her.âÂ
James trips, using his hands to put some distance between his face and the floor, not wanting to damage his face; the flowers are a now mess on the floor.Â
No one stops to help, only glancing over at him and continuing with their day.Â
Luckily for you, you didnât hear it, the music blasting through your headphones blocking out all and any sounds around you.Â
He sighs and pushes himself off the ground with sad and slow movements.Â
The other three reach out to comfort him but he continues walking past them and into the pool area since the kids from class were having fun first day of summer pool party.Â
âSheâs still there,â Logan weakly adds. âThis is good.âÂ
âLetâs go before he floats in the pool, staring into the sun,â Carlos taps his helmet before running outside.Â
-
You hide in the cabana, not wanting to see anyone or have anyone see you in the jean shorts, you havenât worn in what feels like a millennium. You donât even know why youâre here; you should be in your apartment watching some old romance movie that you find stupid because you havenât been in love or in a relationship.Â
You donât even know why you left the cabana flap open, maybe it was some kind of subconscious self-torture because all you see when you look at the pool is everyone from class which consist of skinny girls in bikinis.Â
Just as you pointed them out to yourself, the Jenniferâs give you a polite wave, something not everyone could get which made your harsh thoughts about yourself make you feel bad for thinking these kinds of things when theyâve been nice to you for almost as long as youâve known them. Sure, they were a bit rough around the edges when you first met the girls but after helping them when they needed it, theyâve been nothing but kind to you.Â
The smile falls from your face as you watch them settle onto the pool lounge chairs. âThey didnât need to buy new bathing suits. They didnât gain anything during the holidays.â You shake your head, sighing. âDonât focus on that. You look cute too. Your shorts are perfect for your shirt.â You tug your jacket closer around your torso, half tempted to zip it but deciding not to prevent yourself from overheating. You noticed James lazily floating on one of the bed floaties, staring up at the sky.Â
Almost as if he could feel eyes on him, his head rolls to the side; he glances over at you.Â
You both freeze, keeping eye contact with one another. You didnât realize it at first but, you offer a small wave in his direction.Â
He returns the slow wave.Â
You quickly lower your head, trying to focus on your book. âWhyâd you even accept their invite to this?â You bite the inside of your cheek, letting go when the flavor of copper hits your tastebuds. âThey probably invited you out of the pity. The fat girl friends with a child. They want something to laugh at.âÂ
-
Katie draws Jamesâs attention away from you.Â
âWhat?â He asks, with an annoyed tone.Â
âGet out of the pool and talk to her. She needs someone to talk to and I canât do it.âÂ
âWhy not?âÂ
âMy mom wants to me to do something that other kids my age do.â She notices the raised brow and disbelief expression he has on his face. âWhatever that means. Go and talk to her. Iâm tired of you not saying anything.âÂ
âI canât talk to her,â he stresses the second word as if that would help.Â
âYou can. Itâs easy. She likes music, youâre in a band. Find common ground.âÂ
âYou make it sound like Iâm going into battle... Iâm not, right?âÂ
âYou are and oh look, weâre here.â She shoves him in front of the cabana, hiding behind one of the oddly placed plants.Â
James catches himself before he could trip, glancing back of his shoulder only to find no Katie. He sighs.Â
âHi James.âÂ
His shoulders tense up, eyes quickly moving onto you.Â
âYou know my name?âÂ
âThis isnât awkward.â You nod, âkind of hard not to when youâre the newest artist around here.â You purse your lips, since when did talking to others get to be so hard. âHave I always sounded like this?âÂ
He chuckles, âthat- uh- yeah, that makes sense.âÂ
You gulp before you ask him if he wants to sit in here with you.Â
His eyes widen in surprise making you feel bad.Â
Did you make him think you hated him because if so, that was not your intentions.Â
âYeah, okay.â Heâs quick to walk over towards the unoccupied seat near you.Â
-
Kendall and the other two exit the Palm Woods lobby with Carlos munching on whatever caught his interest in the vending machine today.Â
âWhere could he be?â Logan questions with his hands on his lips.Â
This was not like their friend to just disappear for hours on end (even though it had been ten minutes. The debate between snacks Carlos had with himself was absolute hell).Â
The boy with the extra accessory points to something in front of him, unable to respond as he continues to munch on his snack of the day.Â
âLooks like he doesnât need any help,â Kendall comments.Â
âWe can get rid of these costumes then, right?â Logan starts itching his collar bone.Â
âAfter we-âÂ
âNope,â the brainiac shakes his head. âNope, besides Carlos already stained his so, we canât use these.âÂ
-
âAre you gonna go into the pool at any point today?â James asks, with an innocent tone.Â
âUh- n- I donât think I will.âÂ
âWhy not?âÂ
You say the first thing that pops into your head. âIâm not a big fan of splashing.âÂ
âWe could hangout near a corner... or something.âÂ
âWe?â You turn your head to him.Â
He scratches the back of his neck, a nervous chuckle slipping through the small smile he has on his lips. âUh- yeah. I mean or we could- we could just stay here, if thatâs what you want. I donât want you to be uncomfortable.âÂ
âIf only he knew.â âMaybe when thereâs less people,â you grip the edge of your jacket, further curling it around you. âWe could go for a swim,â your voice wavers at the word.Â
Almost as if he knows what youâre thinking he offers something else. âNah, Iâve already been in the sun for too long. I definitely donât want to become one of those overly tan people, you know.âÂ
You chuckle, knowing exactly who heâs talking about and sadly, itâs usually the parents of the other kids that live here at the Palm Woods. âYeah, smart move on your part,â you joke with him.Â
The corner of his lipâs twitches, he got you to make a joke. He didnât think heâd be able to make you smile much less make a joke, the butterflies in his stomach start fluttering faster than ever.Â
âHave any of you beaten BTF yet?âÂ
He furrows his brows, âhow do you know about that?âÂ
âItâs me. Katie gets bored when she beats the pool jockies and weâve been practicing your guysâ video games so we can beat you.âÂ
He chuckles, ânow that I know that youâre so going down.âÂ
âIâd like to see you try,â you playfully shove his arm.Â
âHow can you stand to be near it?â The pool jocky who was being a jerk before Christmas snickers.Â
âWhat?â James asks, not understanding why this guy is being such a jerk to such a nice person. âJust donât feed her, sheâll never leave if you do.â He turns around, heading towards the pool area feeling very highly of himself.Â
Your brows knit together, a sad pout on your lips. âLetâs just go, James.âÂ
âWhat?â He spins around, standing in front of you. âNo. He doesnât get to talk to you like that and pretend like he didnât.âÂ
âItâs fine. This isnât something new.âÂ
âAnd Iâm gonna make sure it doesnât happen again.âÂ
You didnât see anything because Logan and Carlos stop you from following him. âWould you let me at least-âÂ
âNope,â the former shakes his head. âNot happening. Kendall and James have got this handled.âÂ
Carlos nods, âyeah. We just gotta trust them-âÂ
And then the quick screams of the Jenniferâs and pool splashing causes all of your eyes to widen.Â
âIâm sure itâs fine,â Logan says, turning you around so your back is to the facing the front desk of the lobby as he avoids your gaze.Â
James walks through the open doors, stopping in the doorway, smiling when he sees you and tries to slick his hair back.Â
Kendall rolls his eyes, Katie walking up behind the two. âPlease stop.âÂ
The two jump up, hugging one another as they let out a quick scream until they realize who it is and immediately push the other one away from them.Â
âYouâre fine, she wonât care if your hair is messed up-âÂ
âItâs messed up?â He asks, reaching for hair.Â
âWhat? No. Thatâs not important. If I hear you did something to make her cry or anything to hurt, her feelings. You wonât know revenge until it happens to you.âÂ
A short chuckle slips past your lips as you place a hand on Jamesâs shoulder. âLetâs not threaten people today, Katie.âÂ
âIâm not, just implying what could happen if he isnât nice,â she says, a fake smile tugging at the corner of her lips.Â
âYeah, Iâm not buying that.â You start to push James into the direction of the elevators. You two stare at the doors, unsure of how to talk to one another knowing that he did- whatever it is he did because he cares about you. âMy stomach feels weird, but I donât have an upset stomach?â âThank you.âÂ
âIt was fun.âÂ
âNot as much as itâll be when I kick your butt.âÂ
âOh, youâre on.âÂ
-
Carlos tilts his head, âdoes anyone smell cookies?âÂ
âAs long as you donât smell toast, weâre good,â Logan adds.Â
âHuh?âÂ
âNothing.âÂ
âCould you two walk any slower,â Katie whines. She opens the door, shaking her head watching the two having fun. She wanders over, leaning over the back of the couch. âAny more BTF?âÂ
âYou know it.âÂ
âCookies are done,â Ms. Knight announces, scooping the cookies off the cookie sheet and onto a plate.Â
Everyone runs over to the counter, wincing at the temperature.Â
âWhat does BTF mean?â asks James as he breaks a cookie in half offering you the other half.Â
You accept, âoh, that.â You chuckle, âit was actually something I use to make fun of Katie but when I tell you, I⌠will painfully admit that Iâm a fan of your guyâs music because it means⌠big time fan.âÂ
He leans in. âCan I assume someone here is your favorite member?âÂ
âNope, letâs go play some more. Iâm so close to getting the scoreboard to be all BTF.â

A/N: As promised, part two of my submission to @star-spangled-man-with-a-plan full-figured writing challenge! Hope youâre pleased!
A/N (2): đ đ @goodnightwife, my beta for part 2.Â
Prompt: #25 âYou are beautiful no matter what shape you areâ
FEEDBACK APPRECIATED!Â
Y/N, Nat and Wanda formed a âsisterhood.â Just 4 floors below the common room, Â and had lunch on a regular basis. Her insecurities alarmed Wanda and Nat who formed a plan: Girlâs Day Out!
Tony ordered lunch. In the corner Sam, Bucky and Steve engaged in conversation. The âscience broâsâ debated F.R.I.D.A.Y.âs upgrade.
Across the room, Bucky glanced at Y/N, listening to her laugh. Sheâd throw her head back, scrunch her nose a bit. Angels sang at the sound of her voice.
Nat and Sam smirked. Obviously Bucky was enamored with Y/N and they knew it.
Honoring Y/N, Tony suggested a 40âs and 50âs themed gathering. Y/N vehemently objected. Tony  shushed the room. âItâs mandatory.â Y/N, Bucky, Sam and Bruce groaned. Oh well, new clothes it is.
A sense of dread washed over Y/N. Did they make formal tents?
Wanda placed her hand over Y/Nâs. âBefore todayâs over, youâll see your true self.â Nat nodded.
Sighing, Y/N agreed. âTime to shop.â Clapping, the ladies set their sights on a monumental shopping spree courtesy of Tony Stark.

Reclining, sipping on mimosas, hors d'oeuvre, Y/N, Nat and Wanda basked in natureâs song. Trickling waterfall, lush greenery, soothing sounds wafting through the speaker.
Overwhelmed, Y/N fought tears. Years of bullying broke her spirit. Maybe the pieces were
beginning to mend.
She couldnât stop the fear running through her mind. What to order? Crap, this is difficult.
Nat sensed her frustration suggesting, âHave a light lunch. Salad as the appetizer; grilled salmon, steamed vegetables for your entree.â
Smiling, Y/N agreed. âDelicious and healthy.â
Wanda couldnât contain her enthusiasm. âFound a vintage dress shop not too far from here! âMiss Lucyâs Dress Emporium.
The front of the shop, blue and white striped awnings hung over a huge, enticing display window. Swing dresses, shoes, vintage jewelry returned customers to years gone by; the 40âs and 50âs. While Nat and Wanda gabbed to each other about choosing a dress, Y/N played  âwhat if.â What if her size wasnât available? What if they had her size and she looked like a beached whale in the dress? Hands shaking, Y/N turned the door knob.
A small bell alerted the proprietor she had customers. Shuffling to the counter, an elderly woman barely five feet with brown skin, salt and pepper hair flowing beyond her shoulders, smiled at the trio. âAinât yâall just pretty as can be. What can Miss Lucy do for you?â
Visibly doubtful, Y/N hesitated. âDo you have full figure vintage formal wear? Iâll understand if you donât.â
Miss Lucy placed her wrinkled hand on Y/Nâs shoulder. âYou ainât the first young lady whose visited this shop, down on herself. Whatâs your name shuga?â
"Y / NY / L / N."
âBaby, Iâm 70 years old. Done seen a lot in mâtime. Growing up, people picked atâcha. Hurt ya something terrible. It ainât what they call ya, itâs what ya answer to. Youâre a diamond in the rough. Time for shaping, polishing so the world can see the real you. Now câmon. Miss Lucy gonâ find yâall some dresses.â
Nat and Wanda weaved through a sea of pastels, pencil and swing dresses, mirroring children in a toy store.
Shelby, Miss Lucyâs niece selected a billowing, deep wine satin swing dress with a sewn-in cape. On Y/Nâs feet, low heel silver slippers.
Y/Nâs delicate hands rubbed the satin material, savoring each pleat. Adorning her feet, silver open toe slippers. Rounding out the ensemble, a pair of wine stud earrings with matching necklace.
Time for the reveal. Nat, Wanda and Shelby beamed as Y/N faced the floor length mirror. âBaby girl, how do ya feel, huh?â
Staring at the mirror, Y/N couldnât believe her watery eyes. âWow, I feel like Cinderella going to the ball.â
Nat and Wanda agreed. âYou are Cinderella. Now, time to meet Prince Charming aka James Buchanan Barnes.
âSee, Miss Lucy know what she talkinâ âbout. Letâs get yâall rung up. Be shoâ to take lots of pictures so I can seeâum.â
Nat, Wanda and Y/N kissed Miss Lucy on the cheek. âYou bet we will. Bye Miss Lucy and Shelby. Thank you for everything.
<><><><><><><><>
Bucky tried on his suit for the fifteenth time, changing shirts, ties and shoes. Steve had enough. âBuck, stop!! Ya driving me crazy!! Tomorrow nightâll be here before ya know it. Listen, if ya wanna make this right, tell her why youâre a chicken.â Steve clucked. Bucky threw a pillow.
âAlright. See ya later punk!â
âGânight jerk.â
Y/N stayed the night with Nat and Wanda. Tomorrow night she would debut her new attitude. Hopefully, Bucky would take notice.

The ballroom was abuzz with partygoers dressed in vintage attire. Women wearing swing dresses; men dressed to the nines. Sam, Steve, Bucky, and Tony explained to Thor the premise behind their outfits. Tony mingled with the guests, while waiters served expensive champagne and hors dâoeuvres.
Wanda and Nat reminded Y/N to take a deep breath, chin up and strut! All eyes were on the ladies as they entered the room arm-in-arm. Bucky turned his attention to one woman, Y/N. Heâd never laid eyes on such a vision of loveliness. The way she smiled, sipped her champagne, batted those long eyelashes. Hell, James Buchanan Barnes was a goner! Only problem, telling y/n! Câmon Barnes, grow a pair!
Sam, Bruce, Nat and Wanda hit the dance floor. Viz unsure of himself, watched from the sidelines. Â It was now or never for Bucky. Y/N decided to take in the warm summer night on the balcony. She loved the twinkling lights of the New York skyline. The demon of her past reared its ugly head. Dread washed over her like a tidal wave.
BreatheâŚ.breatheâŚ..Love yourself no matter what. The road is long but the end results are worthwhile!!!
Clearing his throat, Bucky sidled next to Y/N.âHey. Are ya okay?â
Y/Nâs voice cracked, barely holding back tears.âY-yes Bucky. Iâm sorry. Iâd better go.â
As she turned to leave, he reached for her hand. âPlease stay. I know you may not wanna talk tâme, but mâhere.â
âCan I tell you something?â
âAnything.â
She and Bucky walked over to a rooftop bench. âAs a child, I endured relentless teasing. Iâve always been insecure with regards to my weight. It didnât stop at childhood, Teen years, even in college. Iâve NEVER felt pretty. Love avoided me like the plague. Due to insecurities, I doubted any man who showed interest in me. Iâm a mess.â
âIf ya donât mind me saying, you are beautiful no matter what shape you are. I donât see weight. Y/N youâre a gorgeous dame!â Y/N blushed.
âSee, look atâcha. The way those long lashes flutter like angel wings, a to die for smile, not to mention brains. Youâre a total package. Any man would be lucky tâhave ya as his gal.â
âBucky, I donât know what to say. Thank you.â
âI ainât just sayinâ it tâmake ya feel good. Uh, the day in the elevator, I really wanted tâtalk to ya. Instead, I clammed up.â
âWhy donât we start over. Hello, Iâm Y/N Y/L/N and youâre?â
âMânameâs James Buchanan Barnes but everyone calls me Bucky. Please to meetâcha.â
Deciding to forgo the remainder of Tonyâs party, Bucky and Y/N engaged in lively conversation, raiding the rooftop fridge and liquor cabinet.
Channeling her college chorus days, Y/N belted out âDream A Little Dream Of Meâ by Ella Fitzgerald.
Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singing in the sycamore trees
Dream a little dream of me

The first note from Y/Nâs lips rendered Bucky mesmerized by her sultry voice.
<><><><><><>
Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me
Stars fading but I linger on dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger till dawn dear
Just saying this
Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

When the singing stopped, Bucky threw caution to the wind, moving closer to Y/N until there was no space between them. Gently cupping her face, he leaned in placing a gentle kiss on her waiting lips. The kiss lasted only a seconds but felt as if it was an eternity.
Breaking apart for air, Bucky and Y/Nâs foreheads touched. âDoll, mâtoes curled. That was
something else.â
Clearly out of breath, Y/N agreed.
Rubbing the back of his neck, Bucky asked Y/N out on a real date. âH-how wouldâya like tâgo out with me sometimes? Maybe a movie or dinner?â
Blushing, Y/N accepted. âMy answer is yes! Iâd love to.â
âReally? Swell. Um, can I kissâya again?â
âJames Buchanan Barnes, I thought youâd never ask.â
