Henry Keyworth Raine - Self portrait ( as Diogenes ) -
Diogenes (Ancient Greek: Διογένης, romanized: Diogénēs [di.oɡénɛːs]), also known as Diogenes the Cynic (Διογένης ὁ Κυνικός, Diogénēs ho Kynikós) or Diogenes of Sinope, was a Greek philosopher and one of the founders of Cynicism. He was born in Sinope, an Ionian colony on the Black Sea coast of Anatolia in 412 or 404 BC and died at Corinth in 323 BC.
Henry Keyworth Raine (1872–1934) was a British portraitist.
Born in York, he was the son of the Reverend James Raine and Ann Jane Keyworth; and the great nephew of William Powell Frith,
In 1895, according to a newspaper report in the York Herald, Raine was commissioned to paint the portrait of Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll, the sixth child of Queen Victoria, at Kensington Palace. Raine, on his own account, began painting portraits by candlelight in 1897. In 1901, a portrait of Francis Foljambe by Raine, and a self-portrait, were hanging at Osberton Hall.
Raine was described in newspapers as "The cellar artist". Stories about his method of painting in the dark were printed. The techniques he employed in his underground studio off Hanover Square, Westminster were stated to be an effort to recreate the style and results of artists he admired, such as Titian, Rembrandt and Velazquez. Painting by candlelight, using only three colours on his palette and using special black canvas, Raine was able to complete a portrait in five hours, meaning the sitter would only need to visit his studio on one occasion. A newspaper report of 1904 stated that he never exhibited, and had painted portraits of Henry Edwyn King-Tenison, 9th Earl of Kingston and Charles Innes-Ker.
York Art Gallery contains examples of his work.

wicked poster drama…thoughts?
My thoughts are that new celebrities are becoming as parasocial as the fans. You are selling a skill. Not yourself. You got paid to create this promotional material, and the art is now out there in the ether for public consumption. That is where the contract and your part in it ends. Once the art is in the public domain, with your consent, you no longer have control of it, and it doesn’t belong to you. So anyone can save it and edit it and hate it and that’s just the deal you made. We the public are not your friends and family, we do not have to care about your feelings, and your work may be personal to you but it isn’t personal to us, if we’re not crazy. People didn’t appreciate the artistic choice…and they don’t have to. Grow up.
It would be different if people were attacking her personally about the poster, but they aren’t. They’re saying they didn’t like the artistic choice. And apparently it was her choice and she’s taking that really personally but like…it isn’t?
It’s giving James Charles bitching when people bought his eyeshadow palette and destroyed it as if they were using those scissors to carve out his soul. No. You may take your work personally but it’s not an extension of you, you are not the product.

Sirens Nicolas Jaar 2016, Other People
Nicolás Jaar’s Space is Only Noise was the first electronic album to truly obsess me, and I remember going out the day the shipment of Sirens was due to drop at one of my local shops in Toronto feeling geekily breathless about whether anyone would snipe one of the coveted Deluxe Editions with the lotto scratch ticket cover and US quarter (legitimately one of the cooler sleeve concepts I’ve seen) before I could get there. (This was before I knew you could just… ask the shop to hold a copy for you.) Part of my anxiousness was down to the issues Jaar had with an uncleared Ray Charles sample on Space cut “I Got A,” which ultimately led to the track being pulled from subsequent pressings of the record. At the risk of sounding like the most congested kind of nerd, I am so accustomed to the pacing of the album as I first heard it that the song’s absence is so distracting I have trouble listening all the way through the expurgated version. Well, I did get my first pressing of Sirens, and then Jaar released an expanded digital version the following year that he described as “what it should have been all along.” The moral of the story is unclear, other than that being prissy about physical media is a sucker’s game.
youtube
Anyway, (any) Sirens is great. I don’t know if anybody in the game today has a more varied or interesting palette of percussion sounds than Jaar—whether it’s Ricardo Villalobos-esque burps and burbles, samples of shattering glass, or the marching walls of drums that drive “Three Sides of Nazareth,” they all bear the mark of the producer’s meticulousness. Like the other records he’s released under his own name (versus the dancefloor-oriented Against All Logic), much of Sirens has a floating quality, nebulously structured songs that rely more on texture than melody or momentum. The body of “No” brings to mind the muffled, dissociated way things sound when your ears get plugged by water or altitude, but when it finally shifts into a swaying, Latin rhythm it sounds as crisp as the world does when your ears finally pop. Despite its downtempo overall vibe, Sirens does find Jaar flirting more directly with popular music than he really has since: “History Lesson” offers an uncharacteristically swooning vocal from Jaar (and predicts the minimalist soul Brittany Howard would perfect a few years later on Jaime), while “Wildflowers” feels like his stab at the ambient R&B/future garage style of a Burial or a James Blake.
I only pull Sirens off the shelf when I have the space to really lose myself in its grooves, but in the right mood it can be transfixing. It offers further proof that Jaar continues to be (somewhat) quietly one of the major artists of the past fifteen years.

Apartment House and James Weeks — GOMBERT (Another Timbre)
Nicolas Gombert isn’t exactly a household name. He was a composer who lived in the 16th century, worked in the court of Charles V and was dead by 1561. A minor figure, perhaps, but one who comes alive on G O M B E R T, a new interpretation of his work on Another Timbre.
Gombert’s choral music is played here by Apartment House and has been arranged by James Weeks. The results both strip away the vocals and put the emphasis on Gombert’s melody and counterpoint. The music feels old, but the way it’s played here brings its textures out. It’s almost circular, constantly moving, with the instruments almost in conversation with each other: as the strings rise and fall, the woodwinds pick up and answer. It’s a nice example of counterpoint.
Throughout G O M B E R T, the music retains its choral and church-like ambience. It’s easy to picture this being played in a dark, gothic cathedral somewhere, candles flickering behind the group. And James’s arrangements translate well to Apartment House’s playing, giving it a stately, almost regal ambience. Pieces like “O Rex Gloriae” and “In te, Domine, speravi” shine with beauty and are easy to get lost in.
Elsewhere, Weeks’s interludes do an effective job of changing the pace. They’re more minimal, often with just a few instruments drawing the notes out and letting them linger. For example, “Media Vita I” has a slow droning sound in the background as the piano ticks like a clock, the notes ringing and hanging. He also does a good job utilizing Apartment House’s wide sonic palette: “Media Vita II” has the woodwinds playing low notes together, giving the impression of a giant pipe organ.
The two styles of slow minimalism and ever-moving counterpoint work well when contrasted against each other, and the playing by Apartment House is on point. They treat Gombert’s music carefully, playing it carefully, slowly, and without too many flourishes. Those with an ear for Kali Malone or any of Apartment House’s previous records will want to check this out.

background :
sebastian ashford was born under the blinding lights of london, the son of a celebrated playwright father , charles ashford , and his mom , esme ( ne wilde ) who was an extraordinary artist . his early years were steeped in a world of grand theater and innovative art , where rehearsals and art bled into dinner conversations and every meal seemed to be punctuated with talk of the “ next big project ” oh his dad . it wasn’t a world of typical childhood routines , but seb loved to see how a a script turns into a play . growing up in such a dynamic environment , sebastian developed a passion for storytelling — but it wasn’t in the traditional sense . as a child , he would take pieces of his father’s plays , add his own twist , and shoot short films with his camera . from an early age, it was clear that the stage wasn’t enough for sebastian — he wanted to control every frame, every angle, every emotion. that led him to the prestigious london film school, where he only fell more deeply in love with the world of movies . he really only focused on that , didn't care for anything else . he worked hard , and quite quickly , saw the success knocking at his door . he was quite quickly known as one of the best , most genius young directors , by the age of 27 . however , sebastian's reputation as a genius comes at a price . his intense perfectionism often drives those closest to him mad . at this point , he was dating one of the stars in his movie , a whirlwind type of relationship . they were both crazy and perfectionist , but you know that they say about business and pleasure . he need to reach perfection has come between them , as he wouldn't go easy on her with his criticism . this ended up costing the movie , as the lead female character was no longer interested in being a part of the movie . ever since that incident , sebastian has made sure to focus on his work , not letting himself get too involved with any of his crew . although he enjoys flirting , he knows that the second he feels even an ounce of attachment , he has to go back to being as professional as possible .
