Dark!Dragon takes the title of Emperor of the Sea in his forties with the broad daylight murder of Saint Jalmack, and the subsequent deposition of Goa’s royal family.
By the time Luffy sets sail, all of the East Blue, and well over half of Paradise is under his protection, and he has allied himself with the Revolutionary Army of the South Blue, commanded by Monkey D. Urpi and her Chief of Staff- and husband- Monkey D. Garp.
His name is still unknown to the broader public, but by now the upper rungs of the World Government ladder know who he is, and what his ties to the RA leaders are.
They also know that he is a devoted father of three boys. The first, the son of the late Pirate King Gol D. Roger. The second, the biological son of himself and the disgraced Warlord Sir Crocodile. And the third, a noble from the now defunct Goa Kingdom that has renounced his blood ties.
Despite what the smear campaigns say, the Vulture King’s reign is not a blood-soaked and stormy one. There are dark days, yes, but no one goes hungry or without aid. It is humble, but there is happiness, there is community, there is art, there is music.
But the peace does get disturbed at times. Some upstart pirates looking to pull off a quick and easy raid while he’s elsewhere. Marines and Cipher Pol coming around to try and stir up civil unrest. The Warlords being sent to cut out swaths of his territory…
Some always manage to fall through the cracks. Axe-Hand Morgan, Buggy, Don Krieg, Kuro, Arlong, Wapol… and those are only some of the ones Luffy’s run across in his journey. Dragon is proud of the boy’s tenacity, but the Loguetown incident was… frightening.
The first real taste of fear he’d had since he’d fled Mary Geoise… the damn clown deserved every one of those 300 million volts for putting his baby in a pillory…
It’s all a wakeup call for him. He’s been so busy at the top that he’d almost forgotten what the ground looked like. A valuable lesson that has been taught to him by his son.

What does everyone think?
celestial dragons/world nobles
your regular typical tenryubitos:
they did not know any of this. Imu and yriaf never told them about crocodile’s and luffy’s celestial dragon ancestry. This lead to many of them having confusion and frustration in about many events.
for example: after the gray terminal fire, saint jalmack went missing after being ordered to the empty throne.the holy knights and jalmack’s family have no clues of where he went. Many celestial dragons thought imu sama ate him.
(Imu have promised to The asl ,after yriaf picked up sabo from the revolutionary, that zebra /butterfly granny would make the “bad bubble man” go away. You can see where saint jalmack has ended up)
Most celestial dragons are scratching their heads on why sir crocodile was sentence to prison instead of execution like any kingdom usurper fate would have been.
Most confusing of all is right after sabaody incident. The bounty for luffy went up, but The roswards family aren’t allowed to press further charges against straw hat pirates. Neither the military/marines are allowed to used luffy assault on a world noble as the excuse to hunt down luffy indefinitely. The reason for this is unclear, but the five elders stars told the marines and the roswards that they should not waste their time on a rookie pirate. Reality, they are all pansies who are all afraid of their princess’s and boss’s wrath.
in general, all the celestial dragons have a healthy fear of their princess yriaf and their mysterious ruler imu sama. They never have seen imu sama’s true face other than the silhouette of them. However, they all think imu sama is this terrifying being ,who, if the world nobles did not please them or any continues any constant worship, then imu sama would destroy the world in a terrifying matter.
The celestial dragons also think that imu sama eats people, like how are you gonna explain all the people going missing around the Pangaea castle?(imu have no comments on this).
they also think that Yriaf is the child of their “god” and have no other parent. It didn’t help that imu sama have given the entire Mary geoise to baby yriaf as her “dollhouse/toy city”.(who let imu to be a parent?).
There is a general fear of Yriaf too, Yriaf is completely free from all rules, the accusations of the crime of blasphemy and from holy knights too, as she was also technically higher than their boss.
which means aside from the authority to summon a admiral , she also have the ciper pols and holy knights at her beck and call. With the power over the holy knights and connections to the five elder stars, high saintess Yriaf can order even a celestial dragon to executed and get away without any consequences.
luckily for the celestial dragons, princess Yriaf is generally very nice and slow to anger.
unless, you did something very, very bad. For example , treating a commoner very badly under her house, whether it her servants or a common celestial dragon’s slave, the No. 1 rule once you step on her main residence is that she don’t tolerate slavish behavior or forms of abuse.(Yriaf prefer if there are no slaves at all. But again, Imu prevents any further abolitionist behavior of Yriaf because of the grounds of being too obvious. Imu also instruct yraif to play an airhead so celestial dragons don’t suspect her)
the five elder stars:
the only celestial dragons who knew of imu sama’s true face.which makes it awkward when they saw the pictures of their boss’s true image in a bikini on the front covers of the latest lady N magazines. They totally did not have the magazines hidden under their beds, nope, not at all.
Every generation of the elder stars official task is to serve and carry out imu sama whims. Reality, they are more like tired servants whose daily task is to prevent imu sama from destroying the world out of boredom, preventing imu’s operation “judgment day”and help clean up imu related crazy incidents they got themselves into in their disguises. The elder stars are the type of underlings who pride on themselves for carrying out imu sama’s orders without their boss telling them to. Some times they take it too literally and extremely.
for example, imu sama once told them to destroy the documents on ohara island. To which the elders destroy the documents by destroying the entire place in process.
Imu reaction: >:-o
if imu sama told them to “kill someone” (they meant to rough him/her up) the elder stars would actually kill them.
imu reaction: ):-0
because of their proximity to their boss, they know that luffy and crocodile are related to imu. They have no problems with crocodile.
But luffy.
That god damn straw hat luffy is the most troublesome of them all!
the elder stars are swamped with work to cover up all crazy incidents that pirate have gotten into! Every day is a new hijinks the five elders have to find a way to cover up/ write off as insignificant/ or write up a bill to bribe the somebody something to look the other way.
forget being the five elder stars!
they might as well rebrand themselves as the nerona family’s legal team!
Donquixote homing:
like your typical celestial dragons, he only knows as much as the next celestial dragon. He did get a stamp of approval from the princess of Mary geoise for good behavior and being much nicer.
however, when homing was planning to leave Mary geoise as a normal human, the high saintess yriaf warns him not to be so trusting and naïve of people and to go live at east blue ,since it was a lot more peaceful and hospitable.
but like we all know, homing went to north blue anyway.
both imu (reluctantly)and yriaf did agree with his views.however, Imu see it as highly unrealistic and that too much optimism can kill, and they said it to homing’s face when he went to the empty throne to plead for his family abdication.
While even yriaf begrudgingly admitted that homing did not make any cautionary measures.
When the two heard of homing’s and his wife’s death and how much they have suffered, yriaf was in horror, while imu gleefully said to homing dead body, “I told you so.”
dulincea aka homing’s wife:
same as above, but she did get to know the high saintess personally and she was in imu’s list of “tolerable celestial dragons” .since she is also Yriaf’s close friend. She get to know yriaf’s views ,interests and hobbies, and some sensitive personal stuff.
dulincea knows about yriaf’s child, but not their name, and she also knows what yriaf really thinks about her mother.
after homing’s and dulincea’s death, yriaf went to collect dulincea’s body to have it buried with homing after doffy return to Mary geoise with homing’s corpse.
Donquixote mjosgard:
knows as much as any other celestial dragons but got a stamp of approval from yriaf as she notice his change after his fishman island incident. Both of them mourned queen otohime after her assassination . Then became friends after. Imu doesn’t care, but place him in tolerable celestial dragon section in their mind.they had a good laugh when he hit Saint Carlos.
mjosgard’s execution was staged and he did not die, just hidden away so he can continue his human-fishman peace activism.
The roswards:
they know as much as your typical celestial dragons, it doesn’t stop them from trying to butter up to the highest authority.
they are angry that they can’t press charges at the straw hats, but still pansies in ground of the elder stars. So they begrudgingly agree.
however, yriaf views Carlos as disgusting and sharlia as unpleasant Bi$ch. And less said about the patriarch the better.
imu doesn’t like them either, but then again , they dislike the roswards as much as they dislike any other regular celestial dragons(save for a few celestial dragons who are “tolerable”)they laughed when they saw Carlos getting hit by both luffy and mjosgard.

Wake up gays, new OC lore just dropped!
Out of pure insanity I decided it would add an absolutely unhinged connection to make Saint Jalmack (the man who shot Sabo) be the Celestial Dragon who enslaved and controlled Jade before Sys freed him. That all happens way before Sabo is shot and loses his memories, obviously.
I actually debated making him Aurora’s father but decided to create Saint Solomon instead. Though it would be so fucking bonkers if Sabo had to face the bitch who stole his memories in order to free her.
Although to really fuck up the situation, Solomon could be Jalmack's son, so Aurora is his granddaughter. So Sabo is taking care of the granddaughter of the big fuck who tried to murder him at age eleven. I'm obsessed with that.
The only one who doesn't have any connection to Jalmack then is Ruan, but he's got connections with Roger, Rouge, and Ace, so it evens itself out I guess. God I love them.

Dadan's answer
Tumblr media
Answers below
1)Dadan loves all the boys equally, she doesn't want to ever make them feel like she had a favorite
2)Dadan sees herself as a mother more than anything now
3)Dadan drinks beer more than anything else.
4)Jalmack is the person Dadan hates the most. She never met Roger, she and Garp are friends and while Bluejam hurt her boys they didn't fully take a son away from her
5)Dadan wields a long handled axe
6)Okay so this was a headcanon on my page, but I have it that Dadan had a stillborn child shortly before Garp brought Ace to her
7)Dadan started smoking before she started drinking
8)Dadan considers herself absolutely beautiful and will beat someone if they say otherwise
9)Dadan's bounty is 7,800,000, but she's a mountain bandit so it's not expected to be high
10)At current time Dadan is 55

ANGELS AU: what do Charloss and Jalmack look like after their plastic surgery???
For Jalmack, he looks WAY younger as his skin has been tighten with botox and all of the facial lines are gone due to experimental Anela oil.
For Charlos, his face is rearranged with the fat removed.

A complete asshat, Saint Jalmack is a Celestial Dragon who went to visit the Goa Kingdom one time. He noticed Sabo sailing a boat and decided that logically he should fucking kill him with an 80 pound gun. He hasn’t been seen in the series since, not even in the Reverie, so my hope is that he choked on an apple and died.
Happy Birthday, Saint Jalmack!!!

Thinking about retconning one or two things, particularly in regard to Shalria’s blood relations amongst the Celestial Dragons. Before I imagined she had few immediate relatives other than her father and her brother, and had just one uncle on her father’s side who had already passed away at an early age but I forgot about her mother’s side and whether or not she’d have close relatives there. There goes me thinking about Saint Jalmack, the very World Noble who shot Sabo down as a child and caused his memory loss.

I'd personally love to see Luffy or Dragon punch Saint Jalmack (that's the Celestial Dragon who tried to murder Sabo). I'd love to see ACE punch Jalmack in an AU.
Ace: so what's the name of the guy who attempted to murder you :) I just wanna talk to him.
Sabo: No
OMG yes to Ace punching Saint Jalmack!! I would pay to see that!

499-504: “The Battle Against the Big Tiger! Who Is Going to Be Captain?!”, “Freedom Taken Away! the Nobles' Plot Closing in On the Brothers!”, “The Fire Has Been Set! the Gray Terminal in Crisis!”, “Where Can Freedom be Found? A Sad Departure of a Boy!”, “Take Good Care of Him! A Letter from the Brother!” and “To Live Up To The Promise! Departures Of Their Own!”
Tumblr media
R.I.P. Sabo.....?
I watched six episodes in a row and it was totally worth it.
Mobile users better limber up those scrollin fingers because this post is about to get long.
Quick 499 Filler Summary (so I can move on to the good stuff...)
I hate watching filler when I don’t know it’s filler. It messes up my sense of canon. I end up analyzing it, then get annoyed when I realise it was a waste of time. Still, I’m glad I picked up on Sabo telling Ace’s family secret in front of the old Filler Pirate from 498. Even though his character had only just been introduced, I knew he wasn’t the type to blab. Glad you guys pointed that out.
To sum up 499:
1. The boys have no luck with Big Tiger, so they train with Filler Pirate.
2. Ace is shocked to learn Filler Pirate does not loathe Roger.
3. Filler Pirate is returning to the sea to find his old crew. The boys end up helping him build a ship.
4. They train under Filler Pirate. With the power of friendship, they defeat Big Tiger together (without needing catnip, thanks Sabo!)
5. Filler Pirate teaches Ace Pirate Life Lessons such as: there is more to being a pirate captain than strength. Only your crew’s approval makes you a good captain.
6. Filler Pirate heads out to see. Bye, bye Naguri the Filler Pirate!
Now for the good stuff...
Poor People Blood Is Icky
Tumblr media
Episode 500 opened on an ominous note. Not only was the title sinister but a literal storm ripped apart the boys’ refuge in the forest. Nice foreshadowing there.
To repair their hideout, Ace, Sabo and Luffy searched Grey Terminal for scraps. They were ambushed by Bluejam and Sweaty Chins. (Never found out his name, so Sweaty Chins he shall remain.)
Instead of thinking, “Hey, maybe my terrible parenting caused Sabo to run away?” Sweaty Chins pinned the blame on Ace and Luffy, the nasty common children. They had tempted Sabo to run away. They were after his money. Ace did not like that latter comment one bit and tried to fight back. Bluejam smacked him and, horror of horrors, got some of Ace’s blood on Sweaty Chins’ face.
Because everyone knows if you get poor blood on you, you might catch poor, right?
Poor Sabo begged them not to harm Ace and Luffy. “They’re important to me! They’re my brothers!” Of course, Sweaty Chins pulled the old, “If you come with me, they won’t be harmed.” Dying inside, Sabo agreed.
Sabo returned to his gilded prison. Ace and Luffy were dragged to Bluejam’s hideout. He tried to convince Ace and Luffy to stay away from Luffy. He told them Sabo only escaped to Grey Terminal as a mockery of the people who live there, that Sabo really looked down on them as an amusement to make himself feel superior. Of course Ace and Luffy did not buy his bullshit, so he said straight up that if they cared about Sabo, they’d have to let him go.
Weirdly, Bluejam gave them a job as couriers. I’m still not sure if this was because he genuinely wanted to recruit Ace and Luffy into his crew or if he wanted them to be part of the bomb plot and laugh as they realised they’d helped destroy Grey Terminal.
I Fell Into The Burning Ring Of Fire
Tumblr media
Back in High Town, Sweaty Chins was hard at work trying to erase Sabo’s criminal record. He can do this because he has cash and social clout. Sweaty Chins tried hard not to part with cash, urging Sabo to lie. He had been tempted into those criminal acts by feral bandit children, after all.
Because Sabo isn’t awful, he refused to drop his brothers in it. Sweaty Chins kicked his chair away (excellent parenting there) and bribed the guard to erase Sabo’s record. Problem solved! Now he could become a good, obedient noble again. Hurrah!
Then things got weird...
Back at Sabo’s home, Mr and Mrs Sweaty Chins had adopted a sinister noble child called Stelly. The name might resemble Stelio Kontos, but this kid is nowhere near as cool. Stelly was replacement, in case Sabo didn’t work out, apparently. Lovely.
Turned out Stelly had a big mouth. He blabbed to Sabo that the Nobles of High Town had planned a spate of Social Cleansing By Fire because a Celestial Dragon was due to visit. The sight of all the icky poor people and the garbage heap might be too much for the Celestial Dragon’s delicate eyes.
This news freaks out Sabo because he is not evil. “But.. people live there!”
“YES. THEY WILL BURN!” Stelly crowed with glee.
Sabo had a “screw this,” moment and jumped out the window. Seeking clarification, still unsure that anyone could be that heartless, he roamed High Town. For some reason, everyone was making fire jokes. “OHOHO, IT SURE IS WINDY TODAY. FIRES MIGHT SPREAD!” Unable to take it any longer, Sabo straight up asked an old gent if it was true.
It’s as if High Town had a residents’ meeting and thought, “Screw it, let’s just burn Grey Terminal. Cheaper than hiring a skim, am i rite?”
Of course, Sabo went nuts. He was surrounded by freaks. Utter psychos. His brothers would burn because the poor people of Grey Terminal were inconvenient. But before he got the chance to escape, he was caught. Sweaty Chins kicked him into a cellar and locked the door. What a guy! Watching Sabo beating on that door screaming for Ace and Luffy was sad.
I would love to see Sweaty Chins have karma hit him like a brick one day, I swear...
Someone Set Him Up The Bomb
Tumblr media
Back at Bluejam’s Courier Business, Bluejam finally let Ace and Luffy in on the big secret. The boxes they had been carrying contained oil and explosives which would be used to Blow Grey Terminal to Kingdom Come. But hey, he wasn’t the mastermind behind it, so that was alright, right? He was just getting paid. And speaking of money, did Ace and Luffy happen to have any lying around?
Because what Bluejam care about more than anything? Money. Turns out the mastermind of the fire was the King of Goa. Apparently, he promised Bluejam and his crew titles and status. As soon as Bluejam said this, I thought, “There is no way in hell, mate. You are being played.” Nobles barely help their own. As if they’d help you, one who was born a commoner.
I didn’t have long to wait. Bluejam hammered on the gate to Edge Town, gave the signal to be let in. But they were ignored by the guards inside, just like the desperate residents of Grey Terminal were ignored by the guards when they begged to be given refuge. When they retreated to the ship, they found that burning too. The king had double-crossed them.
The whole fire story was actually pretty brutal because something similar happened in real life that was all over the news where I live. A tower block of apartments where poorer people lived went on fire. Seventy-two people died. Some of the bodies will never be identified because they were living there illegally or were sub-letting while waiting for naturalisation papers. Why did the tower block burst into flames? Cheap, shoddy, flammable cladding. Why was the tower block clad in that material? To approve its appearance for the rich people who lived opposite. It looked grimy and run down. The sight of it might hurt their delicate eyes.
This entire plot just reminded me of that and I’ve got say, if Dragon asked me to join his army right now, I’d probably say yes.
And speaking of Dragon...
We Need Febreeze, Stat.
Tumblr media
Desperate to save Ace and Luffy, Sabo escaped through a vent. He reached the city gate, tried to open it and had the crap kicked out of him by a guard. When a mysterious man in a green cloak approached, I thought, “YES! DRAGON IS HERE. HE WILL TAKE SABO AWAY AND LET HIM JOIN THE REVOLUTIONARY ARMY. ANOTHER FINE RECRUIT.”
Wherever there is injustice and class-cleansing, there is Dragon.
Dragon asked Sabo what happened. Sabo spilled his soul and I felt wretched watching him. The self-hatred Sabo has and his powerlessness to effect any change because of the firm grip the defective system has on the OPverse.
“This town smells worse than Grey Terminal. It smells like rotten people. If I stay here, I’ll never be free. I’m ashamed of being born a noble.”
“I know how you feel. I was born in this country too. But I still don’t have enough power to change a country.”
“You’re really listening to me...” Sabo whispered. (That got to me. For the first time, an adult actually listened to him and acknowledged his feelings on the matter.)
“Yes,” Dragon said. “And I will never forget.”
Breaking News: The Poor Can Avoid Being Poor By Not Being Born Poor!
Tumblr media
While Bluejam swore vengeance against the King (optimism!), the king himself had planked his arse on his throne and was complaining the sky was too bright because of the fire. Never has the urge to reach through reality to slap a fictional character been stronger.
“Daddy?” little noble daughter asked. “Why aren’t the people in Grey Terminal humans? Why do they have to burn?”
A great question! A potential ray of light! Might this innocent child stir the king’s conscience?
Did she hell.
Honestly, this scene was too real. People actually talk like this. They genuinely believe it. This may be filler, but damn, it is near-the-knuckle good filler.
Mama Bear To The Rescue
Tumblr media
In the meantime, Bluejam had gone off the deep end because he realised the futility of vengeance and hit rock bottom. Out for blood, he cornered Luffy and Ace and insisted they died together... but first, that treasure they had stolen!
About to put a bullet through Luffy, a strange, blue haki-like moment felled every single member of Bluejam’s crew. Only Bluejam himself remained standing. I’m still not sure what happened here and who was responsible for it (Dragon? Was he the one who cut the path through the fire to help the Grey Terminal people escape?)
At any rate, it gave Dadan the opening she needed to storm in and rescue her boys. (I was so happy when she called them that. JUST ADMIT IT, DADAN!) “I won’t stand by and watch someone try to take my boys’ lives... even if I’m not their real parent.”
I was a bit annoyed by Ace standing his ground when Dadan wanted to scarper. He endangered everyone else and Dadan was horribly injured fighting Bluejam (mostly burns from fleeing the fire after). It was explained later that Ace is like Roger, who would never run from a right because he would rather let the ones he loves escape. The noble sacrifice only works if you can guarantee their safety. If you’re wiped out then the enemy turns on your loved ones, how can you protect them them?
It distressed Luffy too, who was carted off and didn’t hear from them for days.
At least that convenient path through the fire was created, eh? And where did that path lead?
A Revolutionary Army ship with Dragon, Ivan-san and BARTHOLOMEW BLOODY KUMA!
LOOK WHO’S IN THE BACKGROUND!
Tumblr media
(I really hope this is canon because this is something I have wanted confirmation of for AGES. Please let it be true that Kuma was once part of the Revolutionary Army.)
I loved this entire scene. When Ivan asked Dragon how he knew what was going on in this East Blue Backwater and Dragon answered, “This country is an example of how the world will be in the future. There can be no happiness where the undesirables are thrown away. I will change the world.” For all Dragon’s deadbeat dad status, you can see where Luffy gets his ambition and stubborn determination.
Then Dragon addressed the tired, frightened, shivering crowd of poor, Grey Terminal outcasts and shouted: “Those of you who are willing to fight for freedom, come aboard!”
But there was one person missing. I must admit I looked for Sabo on the boat. I thought Dragon might have taken him along. Maybe Dragon didn’t because Sabo was only a kid and he might have had family.
I wish he had. :(
Destination? Anywhere But Here
Tumblr media
The next morning, the sun came out and the clear up began. Any survivors were to be shot on sight. The guards remarked how few charred bodies they found. Hopefully, most of them were Bluejam’s crew and the rest found their way to Dragon’s ship.
Sabo woke up in an alleyway. I was disappointed because Dragon hadn’t taken him. The disappointment was compounded when he was immediately caught and dragged home to High Town. Sweaty Chins enlisted two of the king’s goons as personal guards and calmly threatened to have Sabo killed unless he educated himself to be a noble.
“Be more like Stelly”, Sweaty Chins said, “who is so dependable and who will be getting new clothes to see the Celestial Dragon.”
Of course, Sabo would not be going. He could not be trusted. Sabo was imprisoned in his room. Everything was greyscale except Sabo. All colour had drained from his life. He had no idea whether Luffy and Ace were alive or dead. Was sure they were alive but realised trying to see them would place them in danger. Living like that would be awful. I felt sorry for Sabo, despite his privileged upbringing. The kid was straight up depressed.
“What is freedom?” he wondered. “Where can I find it?” Then he overheard a convenient conversation between his guards. The Celestial Dragon would visit tomorrow. Only one guard and Sabo would be in the house.
This was his chance. He wrote a note with a huge smile on his face.
The next day, a huge, flag-waving crowd gathered at the port to welcome the Celestial Parasite Dragon. I hate stuff like that, so I was already in rage mode.
My mood was NOT IMPROVED when Saint Jalmack SHOT SABO’S WITH A BLOODY BAZOOKA BECAUSE HE WAS A RUDE COMMONER.
:|
At that point, I was convinced Sabo was dead because his top hat (Sabo’s symbol) was seen drifting to earth). I’m still 70% certain he’s dead. Mainly because he hasn’t been seen since (unless there’s something I’ve missed). Sabo’s death also puts Luffy’s reaction to Saint Charloss in perspective. Luffy punched him because no one punched the guy who killed Sabo.
But... there was no body. That is my number one rule. And there was that moment when Dragon’s ship pulled in at tiny Zoro’s island (TINY ZORO!) with someone who was badly injured and needing Ivan’s treatment. Dragon had also been in the audience watching the ceremony for the Celestial Dragon. I have my fingers crossed but won’t get my hopes up.
Take Care of Luffy
Tumblr media
Of course, that wasn’t enough heart-string tugging. This is One Piece. My feelings had to be put through the wringer.
Dadan and Ace finally made it home. That was the single good thing that happened in 503. They saved each others’ lives. Dadan punched Bluejam to death (metal) and ran through fire with Ace. Ace stole medicine, treated her burns and carried her back to the shack.
But Dogra (a bandit) also made it back with news of Sabo. Ace immediately flew off the handle, seeking vengeance. Dadan talked sense into him. This was a Celestial Dragon. They would only have him killed. “Your father’s death changed the world. When you become a man as important as that, you can do whatever you like!”
Oh, Dadan. Where were you at Marineford? Weirdly, her words were prophetic because Ace’s death really will usher in a new pirate era.
Then the letter from Sabo arrived.
“Ace, Luffy, I hope you guys weren’t hurt in the fire. I’m worried about you but I believe you’re okay. I’m sorry to say it but when you get this letter, I’ll already be out to sea. Things led to things and I decided to set out before you. My destination will be anywhere but here! I’m gonna become stronger and be a pirate! The three of us have to become the freest pirates ever. One day, let’s meet up somewhere. Somewhere on the wide open sea, definitely. By the way, Ace, which of us do you think is the bigger brother? It’s odd but our brotherhood is my treasure. Luffy is still a weak crybaby but he is our little brother so take good care of him.”
At that point, I hadn’t seen the scene when Dragon’s ship pulled into Little Zoro’s island, so that brought a tear to my eye. I was so mad at the waste of Sabo’s life, mad that Ace and Luffy had already lost something so precious to them while they were still so young and mad that Sabo’s worthless parents hadn’t taken action against the slug who murdered their son. I was also mad at Dragon for not taking Sabo (but I still have hope that actually did happen).
After that, Ace swore to take care of Luffy. The boys worked hard to improve themselves. They even asked for help with their manners (that dine and dash thank you was hilarious). Now Ace’s well-mannered persona makes sense. Imaginary Sabo guided Luffy in his training, encouraging him just like he always used to.
Then, when they each turned seventeen, they broke Dadan’s heart by heading out to sea.
Why did they chose seventeen? Because that was Sabo’s deadline. At eighteen, he would become a full-fledged noble, so he intended to escape when before then.
Damn... this series. ;_;

One Piece AU where The Red Hair pirates find a toddler Luffy, young Ace and a young Sabo in a barrel. They were hiding from Garp and were napping in the barrel but that barrel was meant for shipment, so it was sealed and put on a ship only for the barrel to fall overboard. Shanks crew finds the barrel floating and they haul it up, hoping it's booze only to pop it open and see three passed out kids who all wake up when they smell the meat Lucky Roo is eating, Luffy jumping out and trying to wrestle the meat from the large man's hands.
Shanks only laughs and tells Lucky to get the boys something to eat because they're probably starving and removes Luffy from Lucky. He turns to Sabo and Ace and ask them where they're from and where their parents are to which they explain they have no parents so Shanks automatically assumes that they're all orphans. Shanks turns to Benn and Benn immediately tells him that they cannot keep the boys but of course Shanks begs because he really doesn't want to just abandon the boys on some random island.
Eventually Lucky comes back with a feast of food for the boys which they immediately devour, Luffy already asking for seconds. Lucky laughs and says he likes the kid already because he can eat and happily gets him more food. Benn decides to interrogate the boys about where they're really from. Ace does all the talking and doesn't tell him about Garp, only that they're from a small village in East Blue and that they have no idea on how to get back, keeping up the ploy that they are orphans with no guardians.
The crew talk away from the boys to decide what to do and Benn let's up, saying that they could use some cabin boys, but Luffy, who's too little to do the chores Sabo and Ace can do would have to be watched, Lucky suggesting that they all take turns as Shanks goes to tell the boys they'll be staying.
After throwing a welcome party for the boys, Benn finds them passed out in his and Shanks quarters. Shanks is too drunk to move them and Benn doesn't feel like carrying Shanks to bed then the young boys so he just throws Shanks next to them and squeezes into the cramped bed himself. When he wakes up in the morning, he finds that the boys are literally laying on top of him and Shanks and sighs, mentally making a note not to let them sleep in their quarters again (a note that swiftly gets tossed out of his head the longer the boys stay there because every time Benn kicks them out, they end up eventually crawling back into their bed, especially Luffy and Benn is just forced to get used to it)
Canon events can happen in this AU, like Luffy finding the gum gum fruit Lucky stole from a rival ship that he thought he put away but Luffy found it an ate it, Shanks losing his arm but Luffy could have fallen overboard on the ship and Shanks jumped in to get him, losing his arm to a sea king in the process. Sabo's disappearance would be a bit different though, maybe they'd dock at an island and Sabo would sail a small dingy with Shanks' flag waving to go fishing (him having the flag up to signal to his guardians where he is) and cut off Jalmack's boat, Jalmack using the excuse that Sabo was waving a pirate flag and deserved to be killed and gunned Sabo's boat down, presumably killing the boy much to the pirates horror. They think Sabo is dead but they wouldn't let Jalmack get away with killing him and would probably kill or maim him to the point he would wish he was dead to avenge Sabo.
Sabo's "death" would hit them pretty hard. Of course everyone would try to act tough about it but when Shanks and Benn are in their quarters behind closed doors, they break, Shanks saying he shouldn't have let Sabo go out alone and blaming himself while Benn says it isn't his fault, Benn should've stopped him from taking the boat in the first place, saying he should have done better to protect their boys and it just turns into a tense argument until they hear the door crack open and there Luffy and Ace are. Luffy already has tears in his eyes and Ace is obviously trying not to cry until he sees Luffy break down and run into Shanks' arm. Benn opens his arms and Ace runs into his arms sobbing, Benn holding him tighter than he's ever held him before and Ace even feels wetness on his shoulder. Benn is crying. He looks over and sees that Shanks is also crying but he's hiding his face in his hat. Benn keeps muttering that he's sorry and Ace is sure that Shanks is doing the same thing. They say it's their fault because he wasn't there to protect them but Ace would probably tell them to shut up because it's no one's fault but Jalmack's and to stop blaming themselves. They'd probably all fall asleep holding each other that night and a few more nights until the hurt eases up, Luffy would still want to sleep in Shanks and Benn's bed though. He finds it comfortable and the two pirate husbands have gotten used to the young boy in their bed that they just let him be.
Ace is preparing to leave the nest at age 17, as he decides to leave Luffy with their dads. Shanks is guiding Ace while simultaneously throwing a going away party that lasts a week and everything is fine. Until Garp manages to track them down.
Garp at first accuses Shanks of kidnapping but Shanks says that he found them in a barrel and thought that they were orphans. Ace comes clean and tells them that he only said they were orphans because he didn't want to go back with Garp or the mountain bandits. Garp asks where Sabo is and Shanks breaks the news to him. Garp goes to attack Shanks but Ace and Luffy jump in between saying that it wasn't his fault, it was Jalmack's fault, that he killed Sabo but Shanks avenged him. Ace tells Garp that he's leaving on his own journey but he can't make Luffy go back and that he belongs with the Red Hair Pirates. Shanks interjects, saying that since Garp is Luffy's grandfather, he's allowed to take him, much to Luffy, Ace and Benn's shock as Benn starts yelling at Shanks, telling him that he can't let Garp take his boy, he's already lost Sabo and Ace is leaving to be on his own, he can't lose Luffy too and just as Garp is about to snatch Luffy, Benn is pointing his gun at Garp's head, telling him if he wants to take their boy, he'll have to kill him first.
Garp says that Benn doesn't have the nerve but Benn just has that 'try me bitch' look in his eyes as he takes the safety off, Luffy getting behind Benn after Benn tells him to. Garp sees how attached the Red Hair Pirates are to Luffy, even Yasopp and Lucky Roo are pointing their guns at Garp and Ace looks damn near ready to fight too. Garp sees Luffy standing behind Benn and it's obvious that he doesn't want to go back so he sighs. Garp wants to avoid bloodshed and says that he can't make Luffy leave, tells them to keep him and goes off on his way, warning them to keep Luffy safe and to not make the same mistakes they made with Sabo or else he'd hunt them down, while muttering how much it's a waste that Luffy wants to be a no good pirate instead of a strong marine just like his grandpa, wondering where he went wrong with him and Luffy's father.
Benn is mad at Shanks for almost letting Garp take Luffy. Shanks just laughs and tells Benn it was all part of his plan and that he knew that Benn wouldn't let him take him. Benn just huffs and rolls his eyes before asking Luffy if he's alright. Shanks hugs Benn and Luffy asking Luffy if he really thought he would let Garp just take him. Luffy laughs and says he knew Shanks wouldn't give him up.
The rest is history.
