From Volume 98 - Chapter 989 / Season 14 Episode 1000. Kaido is up on the rooftop battling the Akazaya Nine. Jack is on his side, but so are many Minks. Inside the building, Queen, King, the Numbers, the Flying Six, and hundreds more surround the Straw Hat Pirates. As they all huddle up, not a single one is overcome with fear. The only people who don't want to fight are the ones that are ready to fight Kaido themselves.

Book Review: 'The Most Notorious "Talker"' #4

The Most Notorious “Talker” Runs the World’s Greatest Clan, Vol. 4 by Jaki, Fame, Hengtee

Nobody likes a tournament arc. Thankfully, readers needn't pay too much attention to the yelling, screaming, and bleeding at the novel's highly orchestrated, gladiatorial exploits, and can instead focus on the cast's intermittent bouts of crippling insecurity, unjustified ego, and lust for power. Noel Stollen's climb to the top continues. Last volume, he used his fists to fell a rival regalia. This volume, he uses his organizational expertise, producing the Seven Star Cup tournament and spying the inevitable fallout.

As readers of this novel series know by now, Noel's plans often go his way, but not without a few nasty twists and turns. THE MOST NOTORIOUS TALKER...v4 finally (formally) introduces its valiant personas, but with more earnest (obvious) character motives. After all, Noel can't plan for and stop what he doesn't know exists. Malebolge the Chaotic may be scheming to unravel human industry and dissect the strongest seekers alive, but Noel can't counterpunch if he's always one step behind.

The current novel's focus on the tournament takes up a lot of oxygen, but between the casual nonsense, readers can catch glimpses of the "game within the game" that Malebolge and her allies are playing. Not an ideal narrative layout for a fantasy novel that should be peaking, but it's serviceable nonetheless.

For example, Bernadetta Golding, the daughter of a wealthy socialite, is the famed and feared Lord of Flies. The woman suspects all sorts of shenanigans with her alignment with the valiants (e.g., Why is her memory so spotty? Why does Malebolge never do the dirty work herself?), yet she acknowledges there's very little she can do about it. Bernadetta's horror and affection for Noel is one of the novel's best shifts in perspective, and could prove essential moving forward.

Elsewhere, THE MOST NOTORIOUS TALKER...v4 gives the supporting cast a few flashes of opportunity to grow.

Koga steps up and makes an earnest and sincere effort to validate his loyalty to Wild Tempest. Dolly Gardner, clan master of the regalia Goat Dinner, reveals she's keener and more sensitive to injustice than initially believed. And everyone's favorite effeminate criminal, Finocchio, makes a play for the position of don within the Barzini empire. All of these characters are shoved to the edge of their emotional well-being and forced to admit they are, somehow, inadequate for the challenges that lay before them. Interestingly, all of these characters, despite their shortcomings, wipe away their tears and push ahead.

The novel series' largest, emerging dramas rest in a handful of unknowns. Bernadetta's tampered memory implies something far darker and far more insidious. Malebolge manipulates the woman, yet refuses to articulate why. Is Bernadetta another valiant? Elsewhere, Noel's remaining lifespan is, apparently, super-short. Readers know he nearly killed himself by taking out Johann, but now it's clear he has, all told, "closer to three years" left. Not good.

THE MOST NOTORIOUS TALKER...v4 chips away at the remaining pillars of confidence most have in their fight against those who desire to extinguish humankind. Watching gladiatorial fights is entertaining, raking in sums from extensive wagers is delightful, deceiving potential marriage partners is a clever little game, and so on and so forth. But when terrorist bombings, assassination attempts, and all other forms of corruption bleed through, hope slips between one's fingers like the sands of time.
