If we asked you where the heart of Rajasthan lies, many of you might point us towards the City Palace, known for its pure white structure with 5 floors. The Jaisalmer Fort or perhaps even the Jain temples. But few would think of Jaisalmer – a town full of stunning rocky ridges, narrow streets and beautiful havelis painted in soft colours.

The very authenticity and custom old traditions of Jaisalmer proved to be very attractive and lure tourists. The colors, the ornaments, the norms of society, the handicrafts, the peasant life, and princes’ lives, everything in and around the city became its defining attribute. Also, what attract the tourists is the very warm, friendly and genuinely caring attitude and behaviour of the local people. With so much positivity all around, tourists have nothing here except for a great time. In Jaisalmer, one can hear the tunes of the historical Rajasthani folk music which are basically ballads, called as “Rasos”, praising the kings for their gallant deeds

Jaisalmer in Rajasthan evokes a cluster of images in the minds of travelers such as a golden fort, undulating sand-dunes, intricately carved havelis and stunningly carved Jain temples. Jaisalmer is often referred to as ‘the golden city’ owing to the extensive use of yellow sandstone in the architecture of the old city which gave it a yellowish-golden tinge. One of the top tourist destinations in Rajasthan, the city draws its name from the Bhatti ruler Rawal Jaisal who founded it in 1156 AD. Owing to its strategic location on the trade route linking India to Central, Asia, Egypt, Arabia, Persia, Africa and the West, the city enjoyed long-term trade relations with these countries and flourished accordingly.

The fort was built in 1156, and is a proud chattel of the Bhati clan. Rawal Jaiswal was the founder of Jaisalmer city, and Jaisalmer fort was built in his reign. It is a 250 foot tall fort, which is protected by 30 feet long walls. The fort constitutes 99 bastions, amongst these 92 were built between 1633 and 1647. One can see the fusion of Islamic and Rajput architecture. There are 4 gateways to reach this fort.
