John Chin Sun of Music: Live From The Lockdown
John Chin Sun of Music: Live From The Lockdown Self-released Pianist John Chin leads a trio of bassist Sean Conly and drummer Jaimeo Brown in a live performance without an audience from Smalls in NYC during the height of the pandemic. Fortunately, the tape machines were rolling. The trio has played together for decades but hadn’t seen each other or played together in months. Chin had a tough bout…

Jaimeo Brown Live Concert and Talk
On October 13, the talented Jaimeo Brown came to the Cambridge community center accompanied by guitarist Chris Scholar and saxophonist Jaleel Shaw to talk about his upcoming album, Transcendence. Jaimeo showcased a few songs from the album which highlighted the theme of the work as a whole. Jaimeo and his team took old sound samples and remixed them into modern jazz singles, making them more palatable to new age jazz fans. I am very lucky to be able to partake in the Concert in Closed Quarters program sponsored by the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and the Arts Scholars program and be introduced to Brown’s music. Being exposed to new genre’s that I would not usually go out of my way to listen to really broadened my horizons and tastes.

The “Concerts in Closed Quarters featuring Jaimeo Brown” provided an intimate setting for me to hear new and captivating music from a very creative artist. Jaimeo and his band mates were very interactive with the audience, sharing their experiences and asking thought provoking questions, actively involving everyone in the process. I appreciated Jaimeo’s ultimate goal of wanting the audience to take something from their performance. I loved the smaller environment because it established a deeper connection between the music, the performers and me/the audience, it made the entire experience all the more powerful. The music was amazing, Jaimeo Brown and his friends/band mates truly proved their talent and gained a new fan.

Presented in confluence with Allison Janae Hamilton’s exhibition, Pitch, the evening will include Brown’s provocative piece Work Songs — which samples the sounds and music of unknown laborers. With songs of the jailhouse, the coal mine, and the gandy dancer, Brown argues that through music we can transcend oppression and the traditional constraints of creativity. Preferred ticket buyers are invited to a gallery tour and recital at 3pm. (at MASS MoCA)

COUCH TOUR: THE DAYNA STEPHENS QUARTET, THE VILLAGE VANGUARD, 12 FEBRUARY 2021
The Vanguard is suspending streaming concerts for repairs, refurbishing, and maybe reopening. I hope that even as more of us get vaccinated and things can reopen to whatever extent possible that we far flung fans can remain in the middle of the New York jazz scene.
While I have gone to gigs at least a couple of nights a week, there are still folks like Dayna Stephens whom I know as names on recordings. That he worked with Kenny Barron counts for much. Aaron Parks and Ben Street on this gig make him innocent by association. But the Vanguard imprimatur was probably decisive.
Barron has consummate taste and touch and a recent Parks gig also had rich compositions for the band to play with. Stephens lived up to that pedigree and it felt, as with the Parks a few weeks ago, that it was a composer’s/bandleader’s gig. The playing was strong yes but it was for compositional and overall effect more than solos.
So it was striking that the first tune featured a baritone sax but played with a clear, feathery tone and little/no growl. Frankly, I thought it was an alto. But he played gently and moderately slowly coming in after Parks opened on piano. He also did a tune on soprano on top of a fun bass and drums groove. Parks came in to double with the soprano to give Jaimeo Brown a pulse to explore around. He was full of accents and subtle tones all night on the kit.
The alto number was ballad like and also afforded Parks a chance for more of a piano solo qua solo. His work was tasteful but, as with his own gig, more color and shading than melodic development. And that is also my impression of Stephens. There were five tunes on tenor where his tone remained feathery even as the band kicked in, often with Ben Street’s bass connecting with Brown in particular but Parks and also Stephens.
Street led many of the best moments, but, again as with the recent Parks gig, figure it was Stephens’s chance to showcase some material (but if so why not talk about it) and let this band run with.
He did and they did.

Track 2/Clifton - Further research & Sample gathering.
In an attempt to keep a steady progression within the development of the individual tracks in the project, a choice was made to leave Track 1 (St. Pauls) as it is for now and move onto starting the sketch for the second track. This track is trying to embody Clifton, through the research that previously took place the key identifiable features that are to be represented within the track are slavery and wealth. Most of the time spent this week has been put into understanding how slavery can be represented through musical features.
African slaves in America would often communicate through drumming until that was discovered by the slave masters and outlawed (Agbaje, 2015). As they could no longer use drums they often resorted to clapping and using their metal tools as percussive instruments (Library Of Congress, nd) as you can hear in this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-zlSq4mWiE. African slaves often used songs to regulate their pace of working so that they filled their quotas and avoided lashings, these songs incorporated call and response and vocal hollering and were called ‘work songs’(Agbaje, 2015).
While researching ‘work songs’ a Jazz album created by musician/producer Jaimeo Brown was discovered (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F96vKZ8xQIM). The album is based on work songs from the slavery period and incorporates all of the aforementioned elements that had been identified in the research, this album will be utilised as an example of how to integrate and blend some of the features that are used within the music of slaves within the track that represents Clifton.
So far a small collection of samples of metal tools such as scythes, hoes, axes and chains are being gathered as opposed to just synthesizing them, this is due to feedback received from a peer group relating to the bongos that had been synthesized in Track 1. The feedback pointed out that the use of the bongo drum included in Track 1 could be made to sound more natural if layered with a sample of the instrument.
