Story I'm proudest of...

Argh. That would be so unfair to the other stories I've written. But if I had to choose, it would be the baseball story, Diamond in the Rough simply because I always wanted to write about baseball and finally found the perfect pairing for it! Not to mention how much research went into the story.

Funny that this came up because this just overtook the baseball story for most hits--though to be honest, I probably would've put this anyway given that it actually got several mentions on Twitter during the 2022 J/B fic exchange: you who know what love is (lol, musing-and-music, you tagged me in this and our regency stories are the most popular!!)

Yikes, there are far too many I want to rec, but I'm going with the story I received in this year's smut swap because I just love it to death: BT, Phone Home by @angelowl-fics. Brienne as an alien!!!! Jaime as her wannabe boy toy!!!! If you haven't read this already--go read it!!!!

Pick one!

Fluff or Angst: I don't think I write things that are especially fluffy. At the same time, I don't think my fics are super angsty for the most part. Dramatic at times? Sure, but angst--the part that really, really hurts--not so much. But I'll put angst because I do drift in that direction more often than fluff. Where's the "snark" option? That's definitely my speed.

Oneshots or longfics: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Was this even a question???????

Canon compliance or canon divergence: I think it depends on the canon. For example, I'm not great at writing canon fic for J/B, so I stick with mod AUs. I was better at writing canon fic in other fandoms, though. So I'd say that for now, canon divergence. But I'll read both.

AO3 or ff.net: I somehow completely missed the ff.net experience. AO3 all the way.

In order to simplify the knight writing process, you must begin posting or check in with us by this date, or we will assign a knight writer. If this happens, you can still post, we just want to ensure everyone gets a gift!

Rules

1. You create one (1) fanwork, and receive one (1) fanwork. 2. If you can't complete your gift on time, please let us know as soon as you do! Life happens, but the sooner we know the easier it is to deal with. 3. For recipients: no specific, detailed scenario prompts, only a list of general likes/tropes/vibes and your squicks and triggers. For gifters, any detail you want from your recipient you’ll need to sleuth on your own, or guess. 4. Have fun! 2022 was hard for a lot of us, and this is meant to round out the year with a little extra joy.

FAQ

Who can participate? Anyone! Artists, writers, vidders, poets, interpretive dancers! This is an inclusive exchange – whether it’s your first or hundredth, you are welcome!

What do I need to do? When you sign up, you’ll provide three general ideas of what you like--tropes, vibes, nothing too specific!--for your creator to work from. Once sign ups close, you’ll be assigned someone and you’ll need to create a fanwork for them based off the information they provided. It could be a short fic, a piece of art, a poem, a vid, an interpretive dance, whatever you like! There are no minimum requirements, but as a rough guideline, think of it as something that would brighten your day if you received it.

When do sign-ups open? They’re open now, and will close on November 30, at the end of the day for you, anywhere in the world.  

What if I can’t finish something in time? Please send us an email at jbficexchange@gmail.com to let us know and we’ll do what we can to either let your recipient know you’ll be a little late, or organize someone else to backfill.

Does my fanwork have to be festive themed? Definitely not. You’ll just be sharing it between December 23rd and New Year’s Day.

Will my prompts be private? No, they will be released to everyone on December 23rd to allow for the Stocking Stuffer exchange (details coming later in the month). This will be open for anyone to contribute to, not just the people who participate in the main exchange.

When is the posting window again? Between December 23 and January 1. If you have not begun posting by December 28 and have not contacted us, the prompts will go to a knight writer to make sure that everyone receives a gift by New Year’s.

My #1 post of 2022

While I was in NYC, I saw this woman walking towards me down the sidewalk, wearing what looked like crop top scrubs. Double take! There were some people between us, and then we crossed paths at an intersection. I was disappointed to see that she was actually wearing sweatpants and a matching crop top, in the exact green color of typical medical scrubs. Obviously, that led to imagining Dr. Jaime Lannister, up to trouble in his crop top scrubs.

The story: The hospital fundraising team asks Dr. Lannister to come take a photo for the newsletter, and instead of a nice suit or white lab coat, he comes wearing . . . that. And well, they can't miss this opportunity, so they end up doing a calendar, which is, of course, the highest grossing fundraiser they've ever had.

For the main event, I wrote this extremely self-indulgent post-canon Tarth fic for @serhumfreysbrokencollarbone​’s delightful prompts "established relationship; reunion after a long separation," and "life on Tarth reveals some new sides of his wife to Jaime.” As you can probably guess from the tags, it contains many of my favorite themes, such indulgent landscape description, things being rebuilt after they fall apart, Jaime developing new passions late in life, Brienne wrestling with the twin burdens of feudal leadership and having a distractingly hot silver fox of a husband, and porn. I had a ball writing it.

This was my first fic exchange for ASOIAF fandom and I must say it was so much fun. Such a fabulous bouquet of stories in the span of 45 days!

I wrote a fluffy one-shot for @diamondsandplexiglass .. Prompt was 'Stolen kisses' and I must confess it was just so tempting. Had so much fun writing this.

Jaime thought for a moment but then decided to give his consent to the merchant. His job was to keep her safe from herself. He was pleasantly surprised when the wench made no objections to the plan. "Diamond in the Rough" Contest!!!

Now that my baseball story is nearing the home stretch, I thought I'd give all the wonderful readers (and anyone else who might be interested) an opportunity to weigh in on what songs they think are playing when each player steps to the plate--or when the relievers enter the game!! Do you think Jaime goes with "Roar"? That Thoros Myr enters the game to "Fireball"? What song would Cleos choose, anyway? I'd love to know what you guys think, so please send me all your suggestions and some of them may be used in the story at some point!

But Dee, you say, didn't you mention a contest? Why, yes, yes I did. See, I've had Brienne's walk-up music picked out almost from the beginning, and it will make an appearance in the story. If you successfully guess what the song is before then, I will happily write a story for you based on whatever you choose!

My #1 post of 2022

So. Book!Jaime and book!Brienne or show!Jaime and show!Brienne. Not as a couple or their relationship (per se) but as separate characters. :)

Book!Jaime and Book!Brienne, by a thousand miles. Warning: I'm in full on rant mode.

We may have gotten glimpses of book Jaime in the show, but as time has gone on, I've realized more and more that we never truly got book Jaime, and it's mostly because Dumb and Dumber hated Jaime as a character. Take, for example, Jaime's iconic line, "The things I do for love" just before he shoves Bran out the tower window. In the book, this scene is told through Bran's POV and he hears Jaime say it with loathing. On the show, Jaime tosses out the line as if to say, "oh well" and probably went back to screwing Cersei. It was just the first step of their assassination of Jaime.

Book!Jaime is a man who struggles to figure out what he's going to do with his life when the one thing that defined him was gone. He's smarter than many give him credit for--including his own siblings--and he shows this throughout his journey in the Riverlands in AFFC. He's figuring out what kind of man he wants to be, and we get a chance to see him in the company of people who like and appreciate him in spite of him being the reviled "Kingslayer." Most importantly, book!Jaime is a man of agency--he names Oathkeeper when he gives it to Brienne, he turns Cersei down when she comes to the White Sword Tower to seduce him into killing Tyrion, and he figures out the best way to bring peace to the Riverlands.

Show!Jaime has almost none, with Dumb and Dumber having decided to make him little more than Cersei's faithful lapdog who came running every time she wanted him. And during the brief times he was with Brienne after their trip through the Riverlands, it felt like the good things he did were at her suggestion--including his decision join the North in the fight against the Others after she told him to "fuck loyalty." It was, quite frankly, their worst interpretation of any character on the show. I don't see how someone can read Jaime's POV from his return to King's Landing in ASOS through his one chapter in ADWD and portray him the way they did. Only possible explanation? They hated Jaime as a character and decided to treat him as such. One of them even referred to Jaime as a "monster" in the season 2 episode where he kills his cousin. The only monstrous thing Jaime does in the entire series to this point is shoving Bran out that window, which don't get me wrong, IS A VERY BAD THING TO DO but...really? "Monster?" No.

The changes made to Brienne from book to show happened, in good part, because they aged her up and took away her AFFC storyline, replacing it instead with her staring at a window until the convenient moment when she decided to take vengeance on Stannis right as Sansa needed her to be there. Book!Brienne is an innocent, noble, idealistic girl who joined the war for love of Renly. She's never even killed anyone and cried when her master-at-arms, Goodwin, had her kill piglets to get a mere idea of what it would be like.

Show!Brienne is older, has seen more of the world, and killing clearly doesn't bother her (especially when you remember the scene where she kills the three Stark men, the last one slowly). She still retains some of Brienne's idealism and has a very strong sense of honor and is definitely stubborn, but book!Brienne wants to be both a lady and a knight. Show!Brienne is forever telling people she's not a lady. The softness that made me fall in love with book!Brienne is missing in her show counterpart. Yes, show!Brienne falls apart when Renly dies and when Jaime leaves her in the Winterfell courtyard, but we see her calm and composed soon after each event. Book!Brienne was near inconsolable after the loss of Renly and after learning of Catelyn's death.

Overall, however, I don't think they did near as much damage to Brienne as a character as they did to Jaime, which is why her show counterpart doesn't anger me as much as his. One of my favorite pieces of fanart has the book versions meeting their show versions. Book!Brienne is startled to meet show!Brienne, who stares up at her in awe. Meanwhile, book!Jaime gives show!Jaime a golden bitch slap. Kinda sums up my feelings.

Festive Fest FAQs

As hard as it is to believe, we are only a few days away from the opening of the Jaime x Brienne Festive Fest 2022 collection! I know a few of you eager beavers are already done, but if you aren’t (or haven’t started) that’s fine! You still have until January 1st to create and post your gift, which is plenty of time. 

However, if you know you cannot complete a fic please reach out to as soon as possible so a knight writer can be arranged. Life happens and there’s no shame in needing a little help. Just a reminder, you will need to begin posting or contact us with an update by December 28th--it's totally fine if you aren't posting until the first, we just need to know so we can arrange knight writers for those who need them!

Now with the collection opening soon, here’s some FAQ on posting!

How does posting work?

The exchange portal will open at midnight UTC on December 23rd (check when that is in your timezone here) Once it opens, there are two options:

The simplest is to go to your ao3 dashboard and select 'Assignments'. Select 'Fulfill' and upload as usual--ao3 will fill in all the prompter and collection details for you.

Alternatively, go to the collection here, and in the top right there will be a ‘Post to Collection’ button OR upload your fic (or link to other art form) to AO3 as usual, and make sure you enter JBFestiveFestivalExchange2022 in the collection field pictured below.

From here, the process is the same as any other upload. Fill in the relevant details and ensure you tick the 'Does this fulfill a challenge assignment' box so the work is gifted to your prompter.

If you’ve already made an AO3 draft before the 23rd, make sure you add it to the collection and put in your recipient’s username in the fields mentioned above, and make sure you change the date when posting (or your gift will be buried). Be aware it can cause some shenanigans where the gift may not appear at the top of the page. 

After that, it’s as simple as clicking Post! Your gift will be submitted to the exchange. 

What about Stocking Stuffers?

I’m glad you asked, imaginary exchange participant that’s totally not me talking to myself! A Stocking Stuffer is a gift made by anyone (you don’t even have to be signed up for the main exchange) for anyone (who also doesn’t need to be signed up for the main exchange). Like other Festive Fest gifts, they can be any size and shape. It can be art! A video edit! A moodboard! A fic of any length! We’ll be releasing the prompt spreadsheet and posting instructions on December 23rd.

Can I thank my beta in the notes of my story?

Absolutely you can! The betas of the fandom work HARD, they definitely deserve recognition. 

What if I don’t receive a gift?

Everyone gets a gift. Authors have until December 28th to post their gift or contact us. If it’s midway through the exchange period and you haven’t received one yet, it might be because your gift needed a knight writer, who is probably working very diligently to complete it.

What’s the etiquette around thanking my author? 

A kudos and a comment is pretty standard. It’s up to you how long your comment is; we don’t write comments with our heads, we write them with our hearts. Just keep in mind that a person out there spent time working on something just for you, so make sure you show your appreciation!

Can I promote my story?

Yes, go wild!

Can I rec my gift story?

Absolutely! Share the love!

1: How many words have you written this year?

Published on AO3: 104,266

Probably double that if you add fic that hasn't gone public on AO3 yet, WIPs, and pieces that ended up not working.

10: What work was the quickest to write?

Writing the first draft? Here We Go to War, written for @kiraziwrites in the JB Festive Festival Exchange 2021. In the end, the fic more than doubled in size after beta comments. Possibly more if I count all the pieces that ended up cut despite how much it expanded during the beta process. The first draft was the quickest, easiest thing.

Of course, the first draft was also written in 2021, though I finished posting it in 2022.

The quickest written and posted entirely in 2022? Come Over and Make Up My Mind, written for @aviss in Jaime x Brienne Smut Swap Quickies.

It took several months to finish posting it, but each individual chapter (it's a five times fic) was quick, quick, quick to write.

6: Favorite title you used

I hate titling fic, and I am bad at it. That might be why I hate it, actually.

I do like Drink Deep, written for @corinalannister in The Exchange that was Promised: Jaime x Brienne Smut Swap 2022. It is likely too on the nose for a vampire AU, but I like it.

I also like Never Easy Prey, written for major in Trick or Treat Exchange 2022. Again, it's very on the nose for a Alien vs. Predator canon divergence, but it makes me smile.
