Even in this condition, it looks vaguely exotic - a testament to William Lyons’ team and the ageless nature of the #JaguarXJ. The rustiest bottom feeders are mostly gone now, but it’s still common to see 70s XJs in this parlous state - restorations bring big costs unless you really know what you’re doing and they’re not all that valuable - in part because of those costs and also because of familiarity - the basic design lasted into 1992, though the XJ40 replaced the sixes in 1987. - The XJ6 (project name XJ4) was created to simplify Jaguar’s complex range - in 1965 it was building the Mk2, S-type, E-type, MkX, and the Daimler 250, the XJ6 replaced a big chunk of these cars - particularly the unloved MkX - and reintroduced economy of scale - Jaguar only sold ~25,000 cars in ’65. A prototype was running by May of ’66 and just a month later Jaguar merged with BMC and Pressed Steel, securing capital and squelching body issues with Pressed Steel. The production XJ6 debuted in September, 1968. - While almost everything was new, the heart of the car was old - the XK six was just fine for the new car, and it came in 2.8L or 4.2L form, with an overdrive 4-speeder or a Borg-Warner Auto. 1969 should have brought the new Walter Hassan- and Harry Mundy-designed XJ V12, but that engine was repeatedly delayed into 1972. Nevertheless, the XJ6, brought to the states only in 4.2L form and publicized by Lyons himself on TV, was a very popular car and rightly so. It looked great and offered effortless performance and luxury … if you could get one. - Although the S1 was better assembled than the S2, strikes (sometimes external - in 1972 a Miner’s strike saw power cuts to Brown’s Lane), supplier problems, and antiquated facilities often soured quality control on the XJ6 and sometimes halted production. Ill-fitting parts, poor paint, and other quality ills did not go unnoticed and the XJ earned an unenviable rep for driving beautifully - to and from the shop. - S1s are great cars to drive, but owners were largely left to sort the cars on their own - not always a happy time, and one that led to the rise of the Chevy V8 conversion. This one may see the road again, it’s not clear. (at CTC Auto Ranch) https://www.instagram.com/oldmotors/p/BvpFLHHFjz_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=15ijy37z8ybdy

Part 2 of 3: I mentioned in the previous post that this is a “series 1.5” #XKE (with some help from @astonuts) – technically that’s not a factory designation but a quirk of the 1968 model year. - It has the larger, exposed headlights and the mechanical equipment of the S2, including safer rocker switches subbed in for toggles on the dashboard, but it retains the earlier grill opening, slim taillights, and other looks of the late S1. in mid-‘68, there were further cosmetic changes (revised bumpers and lights) that were formally referred to as the S2 by Jaguar. - None of that upsets Malcolm Sayer’s achingly pretty original design, which grew organically from the D-type and aerodynamic testing. Sayer had worked at Bristol Aeroplanes and had even designed a prototype car there during the war. He joined Jaguar in 1951, bringing with him his innate ability to think in mathematical terms and his experience with lightweight construction techniques. - He designed his shapes with mathematical formulas – not unlike modern CAD design techniques. He’d gone off to Baghdad in 1948 to teach but found the position more or less nonexistent once he got there – but, he claimed, he’d met a German faculty member there who’d taught him how to mathematically create aerodynamic shapes. Like an alchemist, Sayer often worked alone and kept his formulas to himself. - His shapes were wind-tunnel tested on scale models and then full-size versions with pieces of string to analyze air currents, ideas far out ahead of most other British racing outfits in the 50s, and verifiably reliable. It was these methods that created the C and D type #Jaguars. - But they were intuitively right as well – Sayer was Jaguar’s aerodynamicist and would have referred to himself as an engineer, not a stylist, but his creations were undeniably beautiful – though William Lyons himself had final say over every design in the E-type era, Sayer’s creations were mostly left to their mathematical precision. - A quiet and retiring sort, Sayer was a keen watercolorist and family man. He followed up the E with the stillborn XJ13 and was working on the XJS when he passed away – far too soon – at 54 in 1970. #JaguarEType https://www.instagram.com/p/BpAhHKGldyC/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1hmaxhomm88lw
