Jaguar E-Type
The Jaguar E-Type, also known as the Jaguar XK-E in the United States, is a classic sports car that was produced by Jaguar Cars from 1961 to 1975. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and iconic sports cars ever created.
Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, the E-Type made an immediate impact with its sleek and aerodynamic design, which was influenced by the Jaguar D-Type racing car. It featured long, flowing lines, a low-slung body, and a distinctive oval-shaped front grille. The E-Type’s design was the work of Jaguar’s chief designer, Malcolm Sayer.
The E-Type was offered in different body styles, including a two-seater coupe (known as the Fixed Head Coupe, or FHC), a two-seater convertible (Open Two-Seater, or OTS), and a 2+2 coupe with a slightly longer wheelbase. The interior of the E-Type was luxurious and featured leather upholstery, wood trim, and a well-designed dashboard with a range of instruments.
Under the hood, the E-Type initially featured a 3.8-liter inline-six engine that produced impressive performance for its time. Later models were equipped with a 4.2-liter inline-six engine. The E-Type was known for its excellent acceleration and top speed, making it one of the fastest cars of its era.
In 1971, the E-Type underwent a significant redesign, resulting in the Series 3 model. This version featured a larger and more powerful 5.3-liter V12 engine, as well as other updates to the exterior and interior design.
The Jaguar E-Type is highly regarded for its combination of stunning looks, exhilarating performance, and accessible price compared to other sports cars of its caliber. It remains an automotive icon and a sought-after collectible among classic car enthusiasts.

Jaguar XKSS 3.8 Recreation by Perico001 Chassis n° 1E1944 Coachwork by Lynx This car started life as number 3 short nose D Type built by LYNX in 1977. The car was then converted by LYNX into a LYNX XKSS in the 80s. Bonhams : The Autumn Sale 2020 Estimated : € 250.000 - 350.000 Sold for € 184.000 Autoworld www.autoworld.be Brussels - Belgium September 2020 "The factory fire in February 1957 extinguished the career of the XK SS, a road-going sports car based on the D-Type. As a result of the hiatus in production, and dislocations of plans for new product lines as important as the 3.4 saloon, the XK SS was abandoned. It was a cruel fate for a car that was a true thoroughbred, made in the image of the Le Mans winner, and one of the classic might-have-beens of motoring history." – Eric Dymock, The Jaguar File. One of the rarest Jaguars of all, the XK SS was a spin-off from the D-Type racing programme. To satisfy the FIA's sports car regulations, the D-Type had been built in numbers greatly exceeding the demand for such a specialised piece of racing equipment, and conversion to road trim was viewed as the best way of clearing unsold stocks, hence the XK SS. The idea of a road-equipped D-Type is credited to Jaguar works driver Duncan Hamilton, who fitted a windscreen and hood to his ex-factory 1954 Le Mans car ('OKV 1') in 1956. Modifications to make the D-Type acceptable for road use included installing a seat and door on the passenger side; removing the division between driver and passenger; fitting a full-width wraparound windscreen; and heat-shielding the side-exit exhaust system. A mohair hood and detachable side screens provided weather protection, and, as twin fuel tanks and the spare wheel occupied the boot space, a luggage rack was provided on the tail. The 3.4-litre XK engine remained pretty much to racing specification, producing around 250bhp, which, in a car weighing just 18cwt (914kg), made for electrifying performance. Production commenced during the winter of 1956, but the loss of a number of bodyshells in the fire at the Brown's Lane works in February 1957 severely curtailed the XK SS programme, with the result that only 16 had been made when production ceased in November of that year. Testing an XK SS in 1957, the esteemed American motoring journal Road & Track recorded figures of 5.2 seconds and 13.6 seconds for the 0-60mph and 0-100mph times respectively, which are none too shabby even by today's standards. With an estimated top speed in excess of 150mph, the XK SS remained the fastest catalogued Jaguar sports car for many years. Like many other legendary sports cars, the Jaguar XK SS inspired a number of imitations. An acknowledged master in this highly specialised field is the Sussex-based firm of Lynx Engineering, which enjoys an international reputation for accuracy and quality second to none. The car we offer is the third chassis manufactured by Lynx and the first of the exclusive series of only nine such replicas built to Jaguar XK SS specification (see email correspondence on file from Lynx and the company's co-founder Chris Keith-Lucas). Its history is known from new; indeed, this XK SS served as Chris Keith-Lucas's wedding car! Built in the late 1980s, this XK SS takes its identity from a 1967 Jaguar E-Type, chassis number '1E1944', which was registered in the UK as 'PEH 670F'. Of riveted aluminium sheet, the coachwork conforms to the original method of construction. Unlike the original, however, the Lynx XK SS is powered by a larger, 3.8-litre XK six fitted with triple-Weber induction and a stainless-steel sports exhaust system. (Its original engine was a 4.2-litre XK unit taken from a Series 1½ E-Type.) Finished in British Racing Green, the car also features competition wheels and a nicely patinated black leather interior. Previously owned by Roland Urban, founder of the French Jaguar Drivers' Club, the XK SS was completely overhauled in the early/mid-2000s and was purchased by the current vendor in 2008. In 2009 the engine was overhauled by Paris-based Cecil Cars, while earlier this year the car received new tyres and the carburetion system was overhauled as part of a general check over (see invoice on file for €4,617 from Prestige Garage in Vence, South of France). Offering breathtaking performance with classic Jaguar style, this beautifully executed XK SS re-creation comes with valid French Carte Grise. https://flic.kr/p/2jG37fg

1, 1.5, 2, 3… Ever heard of a Series 1.25 E-Type? /// This particular XKE is known as an open-headlight Series 1 (aka S1¼) - not to be mistaken as a Series 1.5. The Series 1.25s were identical to the standard Series 1s except for one item – the bonnet. This bonnet featured open headlights for the first time on an E-type. All other component areas, including the interior and engine compartment were identical to the late Series 1s, such as the 4.2 XK engine with three SU carburetors, polished aluminum cam covers, and single radiator fan, triple wipers, dashboard toggle switches and interior door handles. Contrary to popular belief, Jaguar did not use up inventory on hand to produce the Series 1.5s; all component changes on the Series 1.5s came about simultaneously beginning with the chassis numbers cited during the month of August 1967. _____________________________________________________________ #jaguar #xke #etype #concours #style #original #carshow #concoursdelegance #convertible #carsandcoffee #design #classicjaguar #driveclassic #preserve #elegance #getoutanddrive #classiccar #drivetastefully #driversource (at DriverSource) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8SO_e7lJyl/?igshid=5g82vwonizgw

The Historic Sports Car Club will organise one of the UK’s most prominent historic racing festivals of the season at this weekend’s Oulton Park Gold Cup (29-31 August).
From a very full 21-race weekend, stand-outs will include two races for Formula Junior to mark 60 years of the category at Oulton Park. To celebrate this landmark, the famous Gold Cup trophy will be presented to the aggregate winner of the Formula Junior races.
The man to beat in the double-header for the FJHRA/HSCC Silverline Historic Formula Junior Championship is undoubtedly Cam Jackson in his superb Brabham BT2 after a double win at Brands Hatch. In fact, prolific winner Jackson will be bidding for a clean sweep of six wins in three cars this weekend. His chief rival, as at Brands, will be former Formula 3000 racer Mark Shaw in his Brabham BT6.
From the capacity grid, a strong front-engined field will deliver a race within a race and leading contenders will include Justin Fleming and Iain Rowley in Lola Mk2s and Mallory Park winner Jonathon Hughes (Terrier Mk4).
In the HSCC Historic Formula Ford Championship Jackson will continue his bid to win a third straight title in three different cars: this year is the unfashionable March 709. At Brands, Linton Stutley took the fight to Jackson in his Royale RP3 and two more mighty contests are likely. Joining the fray is rapid youngster Horatio Fitz-Simon who joins fellow front-runner Pierre Livingstone in the Speedsport squad, while Matt Wrigley, Rob Wainwright and Danny Stanzl all have podium ambitions.
The HSCC’s Dunlop Saloon Car Cup builds on the former Super Touring Trophy to broaden the range of eligible cars. New on the grid will be experienced historic touring car racer Simon Garrad in his newly-prepared Nissan Skyline R32. After selling his Super Touring Renault Laguna to Germany, Garrad commissioned local engineering ace Ric Wood to build him a Skyline for use in the DSCC and this will be the car’s first race weekend.
Mark Wright is an established front-runner in his Ford Sierra RS500, BMW M3s are entered for Mark Smith and Nicholas Bartlett, while former BTCC racer Jason Hughes will be a pacesetter in his Super Touring Vauxhall Vectra.
Some of the most spectacular single-seaters of a generation will deliver the glory in two races for the HSCC’s Aurora Series, with a good contingent of Formula 2 cars. Matt Wrigley will be the benchmark in his March 782 and up against him will be another March 782 in the hands of F2 newcomer Brian Morris. This is the ex-Ghinzani car coming back to racing after a long lay-off.
Running within the Formula Atlantic class will be Bolton’s Callum Grant on his debut race weekend with his March 79B and his pace should be good despite the power disadvantage to the 2-litre F2 cars.
The Historic Road Sports Championship is typified by sporting competition from large and varied grids. Setting the recent pace has been current champion Kevin Kivlochan in his stunning AC Cobra. Kivlochan hoped to carry on where he left off at Brands last month but knew that the return to the grid of the Lotus Elan of John Davison was going to present a real challenge. Sure enough, Davison won narrowly at Brands and now that battle will be rejoined at Oulton Park.
No less than six Morgan Plus 8s will be aiming to get into the action and it is Richard Plant who could head this squadron of Malvern’s finest. From the smaller-engined cars, look out for the Ginetta of Mark Godfrey and the Elan of Jonathan Rose, while Nigel Griffiths brings another AC Cobra to the mix.
The HSCC 70s Road Sports Championship is one of the club’s core championships and has been delivering great value racing for competitors for more than 25 years. The man they have to beat is double champion Jeremy Clark who made his intentions of completing a hat-trick clear by winning the belated season-opener at Brands Hatch in mid-July.
Heading the challengers to Clark is Kevin Kivlochan, who switches to his Morgan Plus 8 for the 70s race, and he will be tough to contain at Oulton Park. Meanwhile, Dave Karaskas, another driver with wide-ranging experience, was a major threat to Clark at Brands Hatch in his TVR 3000M.
The HSCC Guards Trophy is one of the weekend’s longer racer with a 40-munute enduro featuring mandatory pit-stops and optional driver changes. At least seven cars from the Chevron B6 and B8 range are due on the grid and several of them are potential race winners.
Last time out, a mid-race safety car set up a storming finish as father and son Westie and Sam Mitchell scored a memorable debut win in their B8. Elder son Ben is due to share with dad at Oulton but they have plenty of rivals including two of the cars that were hunting them down in the closing stages at Brands Hatch.
The hard-charging Andy Newall now has the B6 that scored many wins over three decades with Michael Schryver, while single-seater and GT ace Michael Lyons again teams up with former BTCC star Anthony Reid in a rare Lenham. John Spiers (TVR Griffiths) and John Davison (Lotus Elan 26R) head the GT pack, while the field is graced by a rare outing for the stunning Lotus 47 of James Claridge.
More single-seaters from the 1970s and early 1980s will contest two races for the HSCC Classic Formula 3 Championship and URS Classic Formula Ford 2000 Series.
Topping the F3 entry will be Brands winners Andrew Smith (March 783) and young Benn Tilley (March 743). Each took a win at Brands Hatch and Smith had the edge on pace in Kent. Ranged against the Marches will be a gaggle of Ralts, notably the RT3 of former champion Gaius Ghinn and the RT1 of Keith White.
Topping the URS FF2000 pack is another young ace, Ben Stiles in his Van Diemen RF82. Leading the chase of Stiles will be Benn Simms, Anthony Hancock and Andrew Smith, not to be confused with the other Andrew Smith on the grid!
Monday is a busy day for contenders in the HSCC Historic Touring Car Championship with a qualifying session and two races. Peter Hallford flies the stars and stripes in his Mustang but will face a ferocious challenge from a gaggle of potent Lotus Cortinas. Notably, local ace and leading modern GT racer Jon Minshaw joins the fray in a Lotus Cortina and will surely be a major contender.
Joining Minshaw in the Cortina pack are Mike Gardiner, Richard Belcher and Roger Stanford and this quartet of cars is sure to give the rumbling Mustang a hard time. Mixing it with the Cortinas should be reigning champion Bob Bullen in one of five Ford Anglias in the field. From the ranks of the smaller-engined cars will come Mini racers Roger Godfrey and Barry Sime, while heading the Imp pack will be the Singer Chamois of Steve Platts.
For sheer spectacle in historic racing, the HSCC Thundersports series takes some beating and the weekend will deliver a wonderfully varied field of sports-racing and GT cars for a pair of races.
Two cars stand out at the head of the entry and both are sensational crowd pleasers from the days of the mighty Can-Am sports-racing cars. Winner of the first race at Brands Hatch was the awesome McLaren M8F of Dean Forward and the 850bhp monster will be tough to beat at Oulton Park. Meanwhile, the driver of Richard Dodkins’ equally huge March 717 is yet to be finally confirmed but a year ago Calum Lockie made it fly.
From the ranks of the 2-litre cars come a gaggle of rapid contenders, topped by the racing return of the famous Chevron B26 ‘chocolate drop’ now in the hands of John Emberson. The B23 of James Claridge and the Osella PA3 of John Spiers are other podium contenders while Mike Fry (Lola T86/90) tops the Sports 2000 division.
Monday’s action includes four Formula Ford races and two of them are for the Classic Formula 1600 Championship. The shortened season kicked off at the Brands Hatch last month and now an excellent grid will gather for rounds three and four at Oulton Park.
Just as he did in Formula Junior, Cam Jackson started his season with a perfect double in his Van Diemen RF80 and he heads to Oulton Park in pursuit of a total of six wins in three different cars.
Out to stop the Jackson steamroller is Formula Ford veteran Rick Morris (Royale RP29), along with rising stars Jordan Harrison (Royale RP21), Samuel Harrison (Royale RP29) and Henry Chart (Van Diemen RF81). Meanwhile, pacesetter Mike Gardiner (Crossle 32F) should be a major threat to Jackson.
The Dunlop Historic Trophy for Pre ’66 Jaguars will be a special one-hour race during the Gold Cup weekend, with mandatory pit stops and the option of two drivers.
Inevitably, the faster E-types will set the overall pace at the head of the field and an intriguing contest is in prospect as Jon Minshaw and his son Jack race against each other. They have previously shared E-types in longer racer and Jack has shown tremendous form given his modest experience. Now he will go head-to-head with dad (in two of dad’s cars) as the third generation of racing Minshaw starts to make its mark.
Other leading E-types include those of John Spiers, Martin Melling and Jason (brother of Jon) Minshaw, Jamie Boot and Jonathan Hughes. Away from the E-type ranks, Richard and Tom Butterfield and Glenn Pearson/Peter Dorlin will battle in Mk1 Saloons and Rick Willmott represents the XK

Offering breathtaking performance with classic Jaguar style, this beautifully executed XK SS re-creation comes with valid French Carte Grise. https://flic.kr/p/2jG6Dph

Sonoma Speed Festival 2019, is like Goodwood on This Side of the Pond
The first ever Sonoma Speed Festival is coming to Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California on May 30, 2019. The event will feature iconic historic racecars from decades past, from the Brass Era, to early ‘70s Trans Am cars, late ‘80s prototypes, and opportunities for show goers to fully experience not only racing car culture, but local culture as well. Off-track are wine tastings, vehicle simulators and virtual-reality experiences, autographs from racing drivers, live music, and a beer garden.
The event’s distant European cousin, the Goodwood Festival of Speed can be described as an English garden party with music provided by the sweet sounds of F1 cars, boosted V8 drift cars, fire-spitting exotics, and straight-piped vintage race cars, as rather than a four-string quartet. In addition to parade laps, there is a timed hill climb to the top of Goodwood Park, with no safety barriers, or fences.
The Sonoma Speed Festival differs in that it’s on the grounds of a full-fledged racing facility and features regional wares from Northern California. “The team organizing this event have attended the best motoring events in the world and want to bring that world-class level of execution and experience to one of the best race tracks in North America,” said Ryan R. Turri, General Manager of the Sonoma Speed Festival. “We’ve brought in teams that have worked on the most highly regarded automotive events and museums across the globe. This is an opportunity to see the most significant motorsports icons in action while enjoying the luxuries and comfort of a European-style motoring event.”
Sonoma Raceway’s 50th anniversary is this year, and to celebrate, the Trans-Am class will run a race on the track at the festival just as it did back in 1969. Nine other classes which are listed below, will run throughout that Saturday and Sunday. In total over, 220 vehicles are expected to attend the event with special guests to be announced.

Open Season: Exploring the 9 Different Types of Convertible
If you’ve spent the past few days looking at that strange yellow ball in the sky and wondering if life might not be better behind the wheel of a convertible you are not alone. But what kind of drop-top should you buy?
Below we’ve separated the market into the different types of convertible on sale. What’s your ideal match?
The Sports Car Two seats, rear-wheel drive and with the fabric roof stowed away, this is what many think of when talking about a convertible. At the cheaper end of the market you’ll find the likes of the Mazda MX-5 (pictured – and the world’s best-selling convertible, no less) and MGF, which thanks to prices that start at less than £1000 prove you can enjoy open-top driving on a city car budget.
Also tempting at this money is the BMW Z3, which gives you a more upmarket image, if not the same kind of sporty driving dynamics. Or you can spend a bit more to enter the world of Porsche Boxsters and first-generations BMW Z4s, which can be picked up for as little as £3000 for a high-mileage example. Don’t forget Lotus either, for in the Elise the Norfolk-based firm has one of the greatest sports cars there’s ever been.
The Four-Seater While convertibles such as the Porsche 911, Mini Convertible and Jaguar XK have rear seats, they are very much of the 2+2 variety, which is to say even small children will find them cramped. For a proper, useable four-seat convertible you need to instead look at something like an Audi A3 (pictured) or Volkswagen Golf as a minimum, as well as ensure it’s got a fabric roof rather than metal – these can be stored in a much more compact space, and thus leave more room for passengers.
Other four-seat soft-tops to look out for include the Audi A5, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and E-Class, Lexus IS and Vauxhall Cascada. If you fancy something with the go to match its show, it’s worth considering high performance derivatives of the above cars such as the BMW M3.
The Cruiser Not everybody who buys a convertible wants to scythe their way down a back road or revel in the feel of a perfectly sorted chassis. Instead, the appeal of driving with the roof down comes from sitting back and watching the world go by, preferably with a big, powerful engine up front that’ll give a solid blast of power when needed.
Cruisers like this can be some of the most enjoyable and relaxing convertibles to drive, with prime examples including the Ford Mustang (pictured) and BMW 6-Series, both of which can be more affordable used buys than you might expect.
The Supercar Definitions of what constitutes a supercar are vague at best, but the Audi R8 Spyder definitely qualifies, regardless of whether it’s powered by a V8 or V10.
On the Ferrari front there’s numerous options from the front-engined California to the mid-engined 458 (pictured) or 488, while over at Lamborghini you can opt for open-top versions of the Gallardo, Huracan or Aventador.
Alternatively, there are drop-top Volante versions of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, DB9, Vanquish et al, while McLaren offers many of its cars in Spider format too. We are only scratching the surface here, with more models from Mercedes, Porsche et al to consider, the world of soft-top supercars is packed with choice.
The Folding Hardtop Strictly speaking a folding hard-top is a type of roof rather than a class of car, but the vehicles to which it is attached almost inevitably share a more relaxed dynamic approach as a result of the extra weight up top. The Mercedes-Benz SLK (pictured) and SL were among the cars to popularise the folding hardtop, followed by the likes of the Peugeot 206 CC and Volkswagen Eos. BMW adopted a similar system for its 4-Series Convertible, as did Volvo with its second-generation C70 and Mazda with the MX-5 RF, the theory being that it provides the best bits of a coupe, such as security and refinement, with the open-air appeal of a convertible.
On the downside a folding hardtop adds weight, complexity and takes up a lot of space, and unlike a soft-top roof often requires the car to be stationary before it’ll open or close.
The Luxury Choice On the right day and the right road any convertible can feel like one of life’s little luxuries. However, if you want a truly opulent experience you’ll need a proper luxury car. For this we are talking about the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Bentley Continental GTC and Rolls-Royce Dawn, each of which will surround you in soft leather, bathe you in ambient lighting and cocoon you when it rains with a multi-layered fabric roof that is matched for snugness only by the thickness of the carpets underfoot. Throw in an ultra-smooth drive and effortless power delivery and motoring life really doesn’t get much better.
The Big Fabric Sunroof There’s a fine line between a big fabric sunroof and a full convertible, but it would be churlish not to include the former here. For to do so would be to rule out cars like the Fiat 500C (pictured) and Citroen DS3 Cabrio, which represent some of the most affordable convertibles to buy and run. Not only that, but due to the fact these roof mechanisms don’t take up much space, you often lose only headroom rather than legroom, making cars such as this fairly practical.
The SUV If you’re in the market for a soft-top SUV don’t expect to have much choice. For something that looks and feels truly modern there’s the Range Rover Evoque Convertible (pictured) and, erm, well that’s it. If you’re prepared to look at older designs you could consider a Jeep Wrangler or Suzuki Jimny, but don’t expect the kind of snug fit or electric folding mechanisms that come with a conventional convertible.
The Classic The list here really is endless, and includes cars that encompass many of the other categories mentioned. But as a starting point you could perhaps try a TVR Chimaera (pictured) for thrills, a Triumph Spitfire or MGB for affordability, or a Porsche 911 if you want something that stands a good chance of increasing in value in years to come. Whatever takes you fancy in the world of classic convertibles it’s well worth doing plenty of research, and seek specialist advice if you’re not sure what to look for.

The Jaguar Lightweight E-Type Sports Car
Jaguar Lightweight E-Type – A close look at this classic sports car’s performance, technical data, features, comparing rivals, history, used prices
from Classic to Modern
The Low Drag Racer
In 1962, Jaguar cars considered the idea of building a low drag sports car racer, based on the D-Type, which had been discontinued five years before.
The concept was tested by designing a fixed head coupe, with a monocoque structure, which would be rigid enough to withstand the stresses of racing.
Lightweight aluminium body panels would be used, whilst the front sub-frame supporting the engine and front suspension would be made of steel.
The incline of the windscreen was increased, and cooling vents for the rear brakes were added near the rear windows.
Apart from the windscreen, perspex replaced the use of glass elsewhere.
It was powered by a tuned version of the 3.8 litre XK engine as used in the later versions of the D-type Jaguar.
Only one prototype was built, and although it produced improved performance over the production E-Type, the increase was not sufficient to warrant development, and the project was shelved.
The Lightweight E-Type
In 1956, Jaguar made the decision to exit car racing. However, when the E-Type was launched in March 1961, it was at a time of growing interest in GT cars.
Compared with purpose-built race cars like the Ferrari 250 GTO, the E-Type was completely outmatched. What was needed was to create a lighter version of this road car.
Consequently, the company decided to re-enter sports car racing and, in early 1962, instigated a project to develop a lighter version of the E-Type for endurance racing.
The result was a decidedly beautiful GT car, which featured a low drag roof and rear section.
It first ran in May 1962, but was sidelined since the FIA would not include the GT Class in the Sports Car World Championship.
However, a private motor dealer prepared a convertible which became Jaguar cars principal development E-Type, and was progressively modified with a lighter gauge steel body, and an engine with a wide angle head.
The result was the Lightweight E-Type Jaguar sports car and, in October 1962, work began on producing the first car which was intended to be the prototype for a short run of similar cars.
In the end, 12 factory Lightweights were built, with all but one being delivered in 1963, along with two semi-lightweight versions.
In many ways, the Lightweight E-Type was the natural evolution of the Low Drag Racer.
Originally based on the D-Type, the specification of the Lightweight varaint consisted of:
An aluminium monocoque body
An alloy 3.8 litre XK engine with a wide angle D-Type head and dry sump lubrication
Lucas fuel injection
5 speed ZF gearbox
Disc brakes from the Mark 9 saloon
Aluminium hardtop, bonnet, doors, and boot lid
Wider rear track
Modified front suspension with anti-dive characteristics
Lowered steering rack
Racing seats and alloy wheels
With the Lightweight now 600 pounds lighter, and developing 340 bhp, it was now ready to take on the Ferrari 250 GTO’s.
However, for improved reliability, the basic D-Type cast iron engine with a Moss gearbox replaced the original units.
Unfortunately, the company never gave the car the development it needed and, by 1964, the project was cancelled. Jaguar cars performance:
Two of the 12 Lightweights were converted into the low drag racer, with one of them taking fifth place in the 1962 Le Mans race.
Both were raced all over Europe, but were dogged by mechanical problems due, in part, to the lacklustre support from the company,
A production E-Type with a D-Type engine took fourth place in the 1962 Le Mans, which was the best ever result for an E-Type.
It was the efforts of numerous privateers, particularly in the US, that kept the Jaguar cars name alive.
In hindsight, had Jaguar produced a competition version of the E-Type in 1962, and provided suitable backup, the Ferrari GTO would probably not have dominated the International GT Class in the way that it did.
In all, Jaguar made 18 of these aluminium bodies, of which 12 were used for the cars produced in 1963, with another four being used for repairs, and the remaining two being sold privately.
The E-Type Jaguar sports car was highly successful in SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) production sports car racing, with a Series 3 V12 racer taking the B-Production Championship in 1975.
Originally, 18 Lightweights were scheduled to be built but, in the end, only 12 were produced.
Consequently, in May 2014, Jaguar’s Heritage Business indicated that it was to hand build the six remaining Lightweights to the exact specifications of the originals.
Jaguar for Sale
In terms of sales of these Jaguar cars, in 2005, a beautiful example of an authentic 1963 Lightweight E-Type, which had been owned and driven by the racing driver Peter Sutcliffe, was put up for auction in the UK, with a guide price of between £1 million and £1.2 million.
Amongst the numerous Jaguar cars, this model will always stand out.
This marks the end of my Review of the Jaguar Lightweight E-Type sports car
