𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐎𝐍𝐑𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐑.    a noblewoman, daughter of 𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬, born in the 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐝, rider of 𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐫𝐚𝐱 & the winged explorer of 𝐬𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐲𝐨𝐬.       she and terrax flew farther south in sothoryos than anyone had gone before, her exploration lasted three years and she returned to the valyrian freehold; declaring sothoryos as "𝐚 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐝"  —  jaenara discovered endless jungle, deserts, and mountain ranges, and it was she who releaved that sothoryos was as large as, if not larger, than essos.

While we are not on the topic, female dragonriders with male dragons are underappreciated and not talked about enough. We have five throughout the world we have now. From the doom to Daenerys. The only ones who we have from Aegon’s Conquest to the main continuity are Dany, Aerea and Nettles. Jaehaera has a male dragon, but she never rides him and one Jaenara Belaerys who flew the dragon Terrax in Old Valyria. Other than that, female dragonriders have female dragons and are tied to the fertility of dragons. It's also notable that pregnancy is not typically afforded to female dragonriders with male dragons

Dany loses Rhogo, and Nettles is notably without a kid that we know of by the end of her story. Jaehaera is married to Aegon but dies before they have kids. Aerea dies before she is married. And we don't know much else about Jaenara Belaerys other than she flew further than anyone has in Sothoryos.

Another strange thing is that with Dany and Netty, the threat of a potential child from them instigated an active threat to their lives from the rulers of Westeros at the time.

What I'm saying is that I think Nettles might be the last Dragonrider and her death, not just Targaryens unable to hatch them after the dance, Rhaenyra’s death and or the Maester conspiracy by themselves lead to the death of a lot of the magic and Dany is the catalyst for its return. There's the blood magic tie in to their unique bonds with their dragons as well, but that can be a separate post.

All in all, it's just a fun little thing I've noticed.

I love the Targaryens, but I never really got the impression that they thought women were equal to men. Don’t get me wrong, Andal culture is extremely sexist and patriarchal, but the Valyrians/Targs were not written like the culture of the Dornish/Rhoynar who do believe women are equal to men. I think the Targaryens definitely gave their women much more freedom and respect than Andals did to their women, but in the end, men were still considered the final authority.

So I think the Targaryens were more progressive than the Andals but less than the Rhoynar. Aegon I did conquer Westeros alongside his sisters, but in the end, it is only him that is referred to as the conqueror, while his sisters are not. I also got the impression that Aegon was the one who made all the final decisions even though Visenya was the eldest. So that’s my opinion what do you think?

I think both similarly and similarly: there's the fact that both Valyrian women and men flew out to Valyrian outposts to control them. It wasn't a total democracy nor did Valyria think women were perfectly equal to men, but they were leagues better and more "progressive" than Westeros.

I would not use the word “progressive” as an absolute or an accurate term for Valyria because:

Valyria developed into a slave-state and practiced enslaving people

the 40 dragonlord families seemed to have lead the entire society (there were nonddragonriding noble and common families), thus making this an oligarchy

It’s still through the man that a child inherits their surname, as we know Aegon, Rhaenys and Visenya’s mother, Valaena, was a Velaryon. The Targ family also was inherited by its men, and Aegon I had to marry his oldest sister in Targ tradition and perform his duties. Then there is the fact that Valyrian men (mostly the sorcerers) can have multiples wives (polgyny); nothing is being said about women having multiple husbands (polyandry)

and so "progressive" puts a modern political value on an ancient people and that implies that the Valyrians and early Targs were studious and aware of patriarchal and other systematic oppressions--trying uproot society from the ground up for altruistic deeds (maybe the women after Aegon I conquerors Westeros, but that’s part of the group, not the whole). 

Again, I’d just say the Valyrians were better in this one regard--gender. The Targs and Valyrians are still more about power than altruism or perfect equality, like 90% of every other person/group in power in this system and world. Until Dany, of course. What makes the Targs-as-Westerosi-rulers different from their ancestors is that they did not colonize nor run an imperialist state; they merely conquered and ran a feudal state.

Let’s also then say that the Targs/Valyrian dragon-riders provide a means of social change in Westeros because their traditions, link to dragonriding, and the looser restrictions on women gives more of its members a bit of perspective and distance. Several notable members always have had this distance partially based on the fact that they are rulers trying to maintain their rule, but also because they are a people who are also foreign in culture and ID to the Westerosi nobles. Really, it’s the Faith of the Seven and the patriarchal traditons of the First Me and the Andals which create that ideological divide.

A Kinda-Digression about Dragons

Dragons are usually associated and stand in for untamed nature and chaos (disorder), or a huge force that ushers in a great change by clearing out what is before. A creature or a force that relentlessly consumes those things in its wake. a challenge that the hero must overcome or get through to obtain  In Greek myth, the serpent Ladon twisted himself the tree in the Hesperides’ Garden of the and guarded the tree’s golden apples. But they also can be the instruments of life giving and strength, as with Chinese dragons who are repsponsible for giving life-saving--or life-ruining--rains, or are made and intrinsically tied to the weather and the elements:

The Chinese dragon, lung, represents yang, the principle of heaven, activity, and maleness in the yinyang of Chinese cosmology. From ancient times it was the emblem of the imperial family, and until the founding of the republic (1911) the dragon adorned the Chinese flag.

They are raw, overwhelming power itself--while also embodying grace and balance-maintenance. 

The fact that women could ride dragons would automatically bump them up in a society that derives its power and identity through dragon-riding, even though only a section of Valyrians actually rode dragons--the 40 “dragonlord” families. this section fought for more influence and dominion over the Valyrian Freehold--the official name for Valyria and its territories. (The Velayrons and Celtigars historically were not part of the dragonriding families in Old Valyria). 

The Valyrians had no kings but instead called themselves the Freehold because all the citizenry who held land had a voice. Archons might be chosen to help lead, but they were elected by the lords freeholder from amongst their number, and only for a limited time. It was rare for Valyria to be swayed by one freeholding family alone although it was not entirely unknown either.

We don’t officially know if women could own land in their own right and autonomously and lead their families but it is likely -- dependent on circumstances where the male was unfit or dead and there would be less resistance or room to depose them.

Landholding was and remains a key defining part of being a citizen and having the right to vote when there was some form of voting allowed. Giving military commands and participating in government from the Romans of the Republic to the first leaders of the U.S. and their own ancestors who settled and colonized the Americas. 

Since women rode dragons, they definitely had a part in Valyrian expansion and imperialism (in the way that the Romans were imperialists, not 19th-20th century Europe and the U.S.), which also means that women had similar real, substantive political power as their male counterparts and particpated in govermental activities. The wars & using dragons to win them, after all, made Valyria as powerful as it was and dragons and the ability to ride them--symbolically, psychologically, culturally, etc. would have made the basis of their moral & aesthetic values. Again, they controlled Valyrian outposts as leaders as well.

So I think that Valyrian women could own land (and thus vote) in their own right, otherwise, how can they participate in expansion fully and maximize the use of their dragons?

Jaenara Belaerys rode her dragon Terrax, alone, to Sothoryos and didn’t come back until three yeas passed. We don’t officially know if she was weird even for the less-gender-restrictive Valyrians, or if women enjoyed having power and authority even while absent enough for her to expect that she’d still be welcome back into society. But I lean towards the latter.

Jaehaera Targaryen (123-133 AC): Daughter of King Aegon II and his wife Helaena Targaryen. After the death of her parents, siblings and uncles during the Dance of the Dragons, she was married to the only remaining candidate for the throne, Aegon III. However, two years later, she apparently threw herself out of her window onto the spikes of the dry moat surrounding Maegor's Holdfast. The King's Hand, Lord Unwin Peake, may in fact have been responsible for her death, as he immediately tried to arrange for Aegon to marry his daughter Myrielle. Fancast: Eleanor Worthington-Cox.

Jaenara Belaerys (era of Valyrian supremacy): A Valyrian dragonrider who attempted to reach the tip of the great southern continent, Sothoryos, on the back of her dragon Terrax. NOOOOO jaehaera shouldn't be cheated on!!! she should heal and become a perfectly normal, intelligent woman, if timid as you say. i dont think aegon iii had it in him to cheat. way too depressed. also in my au any potential mistress wouldn't dare to sleep with him, because she'd be intimidated by morghul, who was not in the dragonpit that day but hunting by the seashore, and had grown large and strong.

was thinking about how jacaerys would handle naming his kids. they have it spelled out that jacaerys will take the name targaryen once rhaenyra is queen and jacaerys takes up his seat as crown prince of dragonstone, which makes me think he'd go for a targaryen name. that + the general issues surrounding his identity, and baela being a born targaryen, also make me feel he'd lean towards a targaryen name. even in the scenario where he somehow wins the dance with his mother and is married to sara snow (i cannot even begin to explain why that would never happen though), i think sara herself would likely push for as targaryen a name as they can think of, again to drive home the point that their children are Rhaenyra's heirs. i was thinking

for girls:

rhaenys -> it's a way to honor his velaryon heritage, pick a targaryen name, and also drive home the point that jacaerys himself is a true targaryen; he has the name, he has the seat, he has a dragon, he has a dragon riding wife, and now he has a daughter named for a conqueror.

rhae -> simple, sweet, very targaryen, and he can say he's named her for like half the women in his house - rhaena the black bride, his cousin rhaena, rhaenys the conqueror, rhaenys velaryon, and even his own mother.

jaenara/jaenerys -> this is a name of an old dragonrider from house belaerys (went extint during the doom). i'm kinda fuzzy on whether the dragon riders all share names or if they're family specfiic (like the way a lot of areas have Region Specific Names but also Family Specific Names - think like Joffrey vs Boremund) so if it is region specific (as in dragon riders shared names but non dragon riding valyrians had their own) I think it would appeal; kinda similar to jacaerys and jaehaerys, very targaryen-ish. if it's not dragon rider esque and house specific, i'm assuming jaenerys is the Targaryen form of it, and I just think Jacaerys would want to name his daughters - his daughters esp given the succession issues they just dealt with - dragon rider names.

shaena/shaera -> not only is it a very neutral name - no one else so far has had it or anything like it, man or woman - but it's a bit similar to 'sara' and i thought jacaerys might like the idea of his daughter having a targaryen-ified version of his wife's name.

valaena -> it's a velaryon name so while i don't think he would give it to his first born daughter, if he had a few daughters, i think he might want a velaryon name as a way of honoring his father's house, and his grandsire corlys. i also think baela would love the idea of having a daughter with a velaryon name, and valaena being the mother of the conquerors makes it a good choice.

for boys

baelor -> ngl if i was jacaerys, baela, or sara, i would simply refuse to name my kid baelon as i'd feel the name was cursed lmao. we have baelon the brave who dies before he can take up the crown which causes a massive rift in the family, and then aemma dying for a son named baelon only for that baelon to die immediately anyways. baelor is a nice way to honor viserys, rhaenyra, and baelon the brave without sticking the kid with a cursed ass name. although baelor is very close to baela, so if he did marry sara snow and make her queen, he's not choosing this one, i think he would (rightly) worry it would be seen as a sleight towards baela and the velaryons.

aerys -> it's not a name that's been used by the targaryen kings at that point and i think the newness of it would really appeal; like a fresh start for the dynasty almost, the way daeron & myriah play it by using incredibly valyrian, but all new names for their brood.

valerion -> jae & aly used this for one of their babies that died in the cradle, but i think it’s a very distinguished name, and sounds like it could be a velaryon or targaryen name, which i think would appeal to jacaerys - and sara as well, actually, i think a bastard girl would understand the tightrope they’re walking here, & would want jacaerys to acknowledge his velaryon side for appearances sake at least.

maelys/maekar -> he can’t use maelor because aegon 2 & helaena used that one (and regardless of what happens to get jacaerys the throne, i can’t see him purposefully attempting to call to mind the targtowers). i have no reason for this one besides i just really like these names lmao. they’re very targaryen, very strong names, and i just think they sound cool!!!!!

daemion -> i think baela would love to name one of her sons after her father, and i can see jacaerys being talked into it (not for a first born though) despite the issues between jace & daemon.

I am sorry to bother, but I am so confused about the Valyrian Fourteen, is this your version? Isnt Terrax and Tessarion male in the canon material? I cant find Perzys???

Hi! This is my version and it’s fanon. As for canon, there’s no canon. There are other fanon versions of the Valyrian Fourteen (realistically, we don’t even know if there were only fourteen, or just main fourteen, or if there fourteen were just the flames/volcanoes), I did research before starting, there’s one in a Role-playing Wiki (Iron Throne Roleplay) and a few others I remember finding on Reddit where people made up for a fanfic or something. But none of them are canon. The only thing that is canon about the Valyrian Pantheon is Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes, as well as Syrax, were said to be named after the gods and goddesses of the Valyrian pantheon.

One of the things I noticed from the Wiki, for instance, was how Syrax was the God of wine, but in Fire and Blood, it was said Syrax was a Goddess, so while I kept her as a Dionysus/Demeter inspired deity, I made her a Goddess. I know Ewan Mitchell has said Vhagar was named after the Valyrian Goddess of War and it seems to be a popular head canon, but there’s no information about which Gods they were or even if Vhagar was a woman. Vhagar was either a Valyrian God or a Goddess, but we don’t know of what, same with Balerion, Meraxes and Syrax.

I chose to base my Valyrian Pantheon on the Twelve Olympians, plus a few other Greek Gods, such as Persephone, and Gaia/Rhea and Uranus/Cronus.

For the names, I used most of the dragon names that sounded Valyrian, besides the canon ones we know came from Gods and Goddesses. Then it was missing two. I used Terrax because Terra means Earth, so it’s a good name for the Gaia inspired Goddess and because there was a dragon called Terrax, who belonged to Jaenara Belaerys, from another dragon lord family. As for Perzys, I was feeling lazy to think of something better, and it’s the Valyrian word for fire.

If GRRM ever talks about them, I might redo the portraits accordingly, but i do like my fanon lore :)

Summary : Dreams, dragon dreams magical and little known like the story of her homeland. Daenys finds herself with the Lady of House Belaerys to laugh, to talk, to read, to try to avoid the gaze of the higher lords but above all to fly together to a future in which they survive.

Dragons, secrets of ancient Valyria and dragon dreams things that happened an empire that had lived, dragons by the hundreds if not thousands drawn from magic and creatures there was a family of wealth and influence that would surpass anything three hundred years later.

But most of all there were the Targaryens a smaller family looked down upon yet proud of their heritage bright hair, violet eyes with five dragons they were gods in Olympus. In the family around Aenar and his two children Gaemon and Daenys, there was not much to tell in the history lost over hundreds of years in which fire and blood had reigned.

But in dreams, in dreams of the violet eyes of the highborn Lady Daenys, lost in time, there were words of other family, of relationships and trade between two dragons who offered each other something in a time when it could be the last.

The family of the Velaryons and the single case of the Belaerys family, the highborn family exactly at the level of the Targaryens, were supposed to have a time together, but only those who were born in this time of blood would know all this.

The daughter's violet eyes gazed from the high railing adorned with sphynix and fire at the city below and above her, the sounds of metal forging, books being turned and Valyrian speech echoing everywhere while dragon wings could be heard roaring and screeching.

Sounds she had known all her life, sounds together with the fine instruments of the servants, sounds she had always judged, whenever her gaze was caught by fire and stars and her dreams were blown away like winds.

But most of all, she had a dream when she looked at the mountains and felt the heat, saw the dracen flying skelts that would flee to the ground like the screams of the people. Tightening her grip on the railing, she let out a sigh, trying to enjoy the sounds again as she flinched when she felt a hand snaft on hers, ,,Dear sister, the Lady Belaerys has arrived,” Gaemon said, violet eyes gazing at her comfort, asking her in silence if all was well, which she replied with a nod.

They knew each other, they were the blood of the dragon the devotion and comfort they offered each other was something she appreciated. Before she took his hand and he led her up the spiral staircase to the expansive terrace where torches and candles burned, it was something they all liked, it gave them healing and comfort.

Gazing into the golden sky, drenched in sunlight, she saw the dragon approach, a relatively young beast a few decades old, on whose back the Lady Belaerys, a woman of about the same age, looked, the last representative of her house after the death of her ancestor, the fearless Jaenara, her house seemed to have only bad luck.

Illnesses and deaths quickly killed all relatives, but it was rumored, no, it was just known that the high family used any means to gain knowledge and those who could not defend themselves suffered, but of course this was all speculation. The dark black and green dragon with slightly purple scales landed on the rock in the light, sniffed the animal and shook itself slightly before letting its rider dismount.

,,A pleasure to see my honorable friends again I hope you have fared well?” she guessed and gathered her childhood friends and allies into an embrace the scent of flame surrounded them all even if the Targaryen dragon were small they were not yet big enough to ride they had a growing Balerion.

Listening to Gaemon's nods and short stories, her violet eyes found those of Daenys who looked at the older one with a shy smile, a certain something always lay between the three of them.

Perhaps it was openness, perhaps it was devotion but above all it was a bond with Daenys whose hand was taken by her, ,,We're back for dinner Gaemon I'll take care of her...and thank your father for the coins…it saved me from the fire” she said and saw the young man's serious nod and slight bow before he disappeared into the palace and she was left alone with Daenys.

Placing a hand gently on the Targaryen's cheek, violet eyes gazed at each other, ,,You grow more beautiful with every dream,” she confessed, seeing her Targaryen love's gaze fall in shame as Daenys clasped her hand tighter.

It was a gentle love between them, Daenys seemed to need her and Terrax, while she needed Daenys, her heart belonged to the young Targaryen, ,,Shall we?” she asked and Tarrax took a few steps towards them.

The dragon mumbled his head to Daenys and seemed happy to see her again before they both rose up one by one and she sat behind Daenys to give her a better feeling while flying the Valyrian words spilled from the mourner's lips and Terrax rose up with a screech before flying away from the terrace and up over the city.

Away from the people, away from the noises and up into the sky through the clouds above, ,,You always like it up here my dear” she commented and her hands gently held Daenys' who seemed to be completely relaxed up here.

Where the sun was and with them and the clouds below them, ,,Yes it is peaceful and I can think in peace not distracted by Valyria” Daenys replied and her light purple dress blew in the wind a contrast to her own dark green lilac.

Valyria as much as they both loved their home, they both knew it would soon be over in barely a decade, ,,Did you have another dream my star?” she asked and placed a soft chaste kiss on the neck of the one sitting in front of her, feeling the brief flinch followed by an audible giggle as her wings beat.

Daenys shook her head, ,,No a few yes but not of our belnagen dreams of dancing dragons and ice something that happened hundreds of years ago and our bones became dragons,” she murmured and looked behind her, the dreamer's gaze radiating a certain sadness, a sadness about the fate of dragon blood.

But above all, she radiated a sense of reverence. she took the elder's hand and stroked it, ,,But they are only dreams and now we are the ones who exist i can truly see you,” she murmured and leaned towards her before the two women shared a gentle kiss and two flames rode against each other and Terrax happily twitched and emitted flames.

They continued the flight for a little while Terrax flew her way alone, they met other dragonriders and exchanged a few words, but most of the time they kept to themselves, their hands never letting go and Daenys leaned against the others' upper bodies, cuddling and happy to be held.

While gentle kisses were exchanged and valiant confessions of love and affection were exchanged between them, they talked about dreams of love and intimacy.

They both knew that together with Gaemon and their father they would fly and sail into a future full of love, a future in which they were truly free until the day they flew back to Valyria in death.

Okay, okay, so, for you? I would go with Dreamfyre or Moondancer

I mean, Moondancer fits your aesthetic with sea foam colour, but Dreamfyre matches your artistic personality. It is a choice between the riders then, and you strike me more like a person who would get along better with Helaena and Rhaena, so I would go for Dreamfyre more ahahbdneks

Very obvious choice would be Meleys the Red Queen, but I can do better than that and actually... I think Liv matches one ancient dragon that I always though was super cool more

Terrax is the dragon of my choice because it matches the endless pool of creativity, personality and depth Liv has as a person and creator. Terrax flew as far as the world in ASOIAF goes with his rider Jaenara Belaerys back when Old Valyria was still standing and, not going to lie, both of them remind me of Liv so much
