The tradition comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack, a cunning fellow who tricked the devil various times. When he passed away he wasn’t allowed in heaven or hell. Instead he was given a piece of coal and the devil sent him on his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the Earth ever since. He eventually adapted the nickname Jack O’Lantern. ⁠ Scary faces were craved into turnips or potatoes and placed by windows or doors to frighten away Stingy Jack and other wandering evil spirits.
