It was thirty minutes until their set. Martian Haze's first performance if 2023. They'd been a band for years now with no real success to show for it. Even this gig was unpaid, but it was for a good cause and gave them publicity. Though, honestly, Jay just did it because he loved making music with his bandmates.

Martian Haze couldn't be called consistent in their production, but in tradition they never failed. Their warm up ritual was tried and true, starting with a bottle of something; strong and always shared. Jay was big on his mantras, too, and forced his friends to join in with him every time.

"We are Martian Haze. We are talented. We are amazing. We are not going to fuck this up."

the balmy california morning had morphed into a tepid night, sixty degrees and wind chilling the edges of half moon bay. ivy pulled her cardigan a little tighter around the flimsy white sundress that fluttered across her thighs. cameron’s which had been buzzing only twenty minutes ago had quieted now, the last of the revelers sequestered into tiny booths laughing over their overpriced cocktails and cold truffle fries. she had perched herself in the rickety lawn chair on the patio still sipping on a half melted strawberry margarita. it was one of those rare nights where she’d managed to get off early and casper (perennial teenager that he was) preferred to spend the night at his friend’s than with his big sister. so of course like a magnet to a pole she’d ended up where jackson was. she shoved at his leg (still clad in his work uniform and stained with bleu cheese) with her dainty lace ballet flat and smiled. “what’s in your head over there? you’re thinking hard enough for the both of us.”
