Mmmmmmm, thinking about how in 1x02 of Alias where Sydney tells Jack that she has thousands of questions plaguing her ever since she found out he was also a double agent, but how she needed to know the answer to only one of them: Did he know that Danny was going to be killed?
He simply said yes. That's it. And she slapped the heck outta him.
Later on, Will asks Sydney if she knew Danny had a flight booked for Singapore on the same night that he was murdered. She didn't know, but she plays it off and lies to Will saying she did, it was for a medical conference.
Jack could've said something, explained himself when she first asked about Danny. But he chose not to. Maybe if he tried to explain himself, it would be like talking to a brick wall, or maybe she would verbally run him over if he tried to add something after that yes.
Instead, he chose to keep it simple, concise. If she figures out the truth, cool. He just wants her opinion of him to be her own, and not influenced by him trying to justify himself to her. And he ultimately doesn't want to force his relationship with her. He wants it to be her choice. The only way he's trying to convince her is through his actions, the quiet and unseen actions that are an attempt to keep her safe. He may have been too late for Danny, but he'll do his damnest to never be too late for Sydney.
And no, those aren't tears in my eyes. It's raining outside. I'm inside, you say? That's irrelevant. Leave me alone. ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ

I realized this post also did not include when right before Sydney was heading to Cairo at the end of the episode to get back a weapon for the CIA, she met up with Jack. She apologized for slapping him, but he just moved the conversation on. He understood why she was upset. I mean, she has every right to be upset with him. He's been absent from her life since she was 8, and then all of a sudden he's right there in the middle of it 18 years later. He felt he deserved that slap. And probably more, honestly.
And when Sydney mentions she needs him to cover her at SD-6 while she's gone, there was zero hesitation from him. Of course he's gonna make sure they don't know about what she's actually doing. He's going to keep her safe.
And then her, "...Dad... It was you, wasn't it? You bought the ticket? Singapore?" SHE'S ASKING HIM. SHE WANTS TO KNOW HIS SIDE OF THE STORY. HE CAN FINALLY EXPLAIN WHAT HE TRIED TO DO FOR HER. HE LOOKS AWAY AND SWALLOWS BEFORE HE INFORMS HER.
"You were in Taipei... I'd arranged a flight for you as well. From Singapore, you could've gone anywhere." SYDNEY IS HOLDING BACK TEARS AT THIS POINT, THE GRAVITY OF WHAT HE TRIED TO DO SINKING IN. "I went to Danny's apartment, but it was too late..." HE SHAKES HIS HEAD SLIGHTLY AND SHIFTS HIS JAW, LIKE HES DISAPPOINTED IN HIMSELF. "...Just minutes too late." SYDNEY IS ACTIVELY BITING BACK MORE TEARS AND GIVES HIM A SMALL THANK YOU, AND JACK JUST GIVES A SLIGHTLY SLOW BLINK AND TIPS HIS HEAD UP, LIKE HE CANT VERBALLY ACCEPT IT BECAUSE IT FEELS WRONG. HE FAILED. WHY IS SHE THANKING HIM? HE WASNT ENOUGH. HES NEVER BEEN ENOUGH FOR HER. AND THEY JUST STARE AT EACH OTHER FOR A LONG SECOND, LIKE SYDNEY WAS DEBATING HUGGING HIM BUT SETTLED FOR SAYING SHE HAD TO GO. AND SHE GIVES HIM THE BIGGEST SMILE SHE CAN MUSTER BEFORE TURNING TO HER CAR TO LEAVE. AND HE WATCHES HER DRIVE AWAY, PROBABLY HOPING AND PRAYING SHES SAFE IN CAIRO BECAUSE THIS LINE OF WORK IS DANGEROUS. HE TRIED TELLING HER THAT MUCH.
WHY AM I YELLING? BECAUSE THESE TWO MAKE ME INSANE AND I CANT KEEP QUITE ABOUT THEM ANY LONGER. PLEASE. LET ME YELL INTO THIS VOID. ๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
