Redesigns!

So Kandid Lyke and Mayn were the first characters I designed, and Kandid's design was based on the very original concept of Melancholy, which sort of took place in a rural scifi setting. After I did more world building, I changed the setting to a sort of olden times instead of during modern times, and I wanted to change their clothing because it didn't fit the time period or any of the other characters clothing. So here's the redesigns!

Kandid's face is a bit more round to make him seem a bit younger and more naive. I really debated on keeping the pansexual pin, but I settled on the flag colors being pocket squares since it's time period appropriate.

Lyke changed the most I think. His hair is a bit neater, and I gave him a red vest instead of a red coat.

Mayn pretty much stayed the same except I made her hair more curly and her dress is longer.

Let's get into the new character, Rosie. Technically she's not a new character, but I rewrote her lore to make her a more important character. Basically she's the daughter of one of the people trying to form a new government on the island they live on. She's Lyke and Kandid's friend and the three formed a friend group (Mayn also joined this friend group when she was old enough to run around with them.) Something interesting about Rosie is that she and Kandid dated for a period of time when they were like 16/17. After they broke up they stayed friends but sort of drifted apart a bit and things became awkward. There's more to her character but I don't wanna spoil that lore.

Oc Shapeshifter Lore

CW: Mentions of murder, infant death, cannibalism, and torture, do NOT read if any of those trigger you

The kingdom is composed of 27 islands. Shapeshifters have ruled the islands for thousands of years but one day the former king and queen had twins. These twins grew up and desired power so they killed their parents and siblings until they were the only two shapeshifters left. The vowed to never betray each other and took over the kingdom. They ruled for a thousand years and hid the history of their parents from the people. The knowledge of the twins killing their family is long forgotten.

The King takes the form of a humanoid with animalistic qualities. He has big bird wings that look like a cape when down, and has claws and sharp teeth. The Queen takes a more nature humanoid look. She has big horns with flowers blooming on them and her clothes. The King likes hunting and created big arenas to hunt and kill people (more on that later.) The Queen is more sadistic and enjoys torturing anyone who dare try to go against them.

The Queen had 25 children while the King had 9. Each island has at least one of their shapeshifter children guarding them (the larger islands have two or 3) but the King and Queen stay in their castle. Here is a sketch of the kingdom I made.

(please note that at the start of Melancholy, all the Shapeshifters are dead and the arenas abandoned)

When the King or Queen desire to have children, they choose a male (typically a True Weatherman or somebody with more than one ability) to mate with. If the child is not a Shapeshifter when born, they lock them in a room where they starve and die. If the baby is a Shapeshifter, they are raised in the castle until they are old enough to monitor an island.

I will now talk about one child in particular. The King once fell in love with a woman and the woman fell in love with the King. The Queen welcomed the woman into their castle but said that she could not get married to the King because she worried it would confuse people that she was the queen and not her. So the King and his lover never got married. The girl wanted to have children but the King was hesitant because a human girl could not handle having a Shapeshifter baby and would die if she had one. She says that the odds of her having a Shapeshifter child were very low which convinced the King and they had a child. Unfortunately the child did turn out to be a Shapeshifter and the girl was constantly monitored by Healers. The King rarely left her side and when she finally did have a child, she died. The King was devastated but raised his Shapeshifter son and was the Kings favorite child. After his lover died, the King took out his anger by creating arenas to hunt humans. This went on for 100 years. The King's 9th son was assigned to one of the islands with the arenas on it.

25 years before the events of Melancholy, the King's 9th Shapeshifter son grew strong a thought he should rule the kingdom. He created jewelry and riches and offered it to the villages on his island. He convinced them to help overthrow his parents to become the new King. As his popularity grew, the Queen began to worry and ask the King to do something about his son. The King, heartbroken, didn't do anything. The Queen met with her nephew and told him to stop. The 9th smiled and said he was already too powerful to be stopped. The jewelry he offered to villages had a curse that would make any person's ability so powerful it would drive the wearer to madness and rage. The 9th had an army of cursed people and the Queen was furious. She fled back to her castle and waited for the 9th to come. When he did, the Queen begged the King to see reason and together they killed the Kings 9th son. The King and Queen went around killing all the people cursed by the 9th and destroyed the cursed jewelry (some pieces of jewelry still remain hidden in the rubble though...) The King was destroyed by what his son had done and became more angry. He began eat the humans he killed in the arenas. Killing the 9th, however, would lead to the downfall of the King and Queen because they revealed to the kingdom that Shapeshifters could actually die which caused one man in particular to take action.

Thieous was the man to start the first revolution. He had a 10 year old son named Acreaous and a wife. He started the revolution and quickly got a large backing with him. One man, (I don't have a first name for him yet but his surname is Blaire) Blaire, was Thieous's right hand man. The Queen noticed the revolution and decided to kill Thieous's wife and kidnap Acreaous. Thieous found out and went to talk to the Queen. The Queen said that she would keep his son alive if he publicly advocated against the revolution and stop it by any means. Fearing for his son's life, Thieous did just that. Feeling betrayed, Blaire was the new face of the revolution and denied Thieous's pleads to stop. The Queen used Thieous to speak to their citizens about how the revolution was bad while meanwhile torturing Acreaous who was in a cold dungeon cell.

One of the Kings other sons used to be friends with Thieous but one event many years ago broke their long lasting friendship. He was tasked to kill Thieous and blame it on the revolutionists which would spark outrage in the citizens. When he tries to however, Thieous discovered the secret to kill Shapeshifters (which I won't reveal yet) and killed him. With this knowledge, he ran to find Blaire to tell him about the secret. He rejoined the revolution and ended up killing a couple more of the Shapeshifters. He and Blaire eventually faced off against the King. Thieous and Blaire killed the King but Blaire also died. Thieous went into the castle to search for his son and the Queen. He went to the dungeons and killed the Queen and saved his son. He and Acreaous became the new King and Prince of the kingdom.

9 years go by with Thieous and Acreaous hunting the remaining Shapeshifters and attempted to rebuild the new kingdom. By the time of Melancholy, all of the King and Queens children are dead. However, crime rates rise in the chaos and a threat of a second revolution begins. This is where Melancholy takes place.

I left out a LOT of spoilers for things that would be revealed later. Like why Thieous started the revolution in the first place, details about Acreaous, the bg info on how one of the kings sons and Thieous were friends, how they betrayed each other, and a lot of other things. So take all of this with a grain of salt.

Here's Kandid's and Lyke's family trees. Kind of spoilers but idk.

So green are Shapeshifters, yellow are Speakers, red are Healers, purple are Mimics, light blue are Aquas, and dark blue are Weathermen.

Lyke's is more detailed cause of Orin. Basically Eryss was married and Layre was very abusive. She was a great healer and caught the attention of the King who met her and fell in love with her, and she also fell for him. They couldn't get married cause the Queen didn't want people to think Eryss was the Queen and not her. (To explain real quick, the King and Queen are siblings, and are not married or anything weird like that.) Eryss already had a child with Layre, and their family were raised up in nobility. When Eryss had Orin, she died and the King killed Layre cause he was being awful. Astor was sent away and raised by another family, but when Orin grew up he meet Astor and brought her family into nobility, so the Barclay family is like one of the most esteemed families. Or at least was. I skipped over lots of details but this explains the main stuff.

So after Manuel died, Viridian got Cora and Castella to move on her island she ruled over, and like had a secret affair with Cora that like nobody found out about, not even Castella. There's more to Kandid's family that goes wayyyy back but I don't feel like explaining rn. There's like a whole bunch of lore I don't wanna explain cause spoilers, but yeah that's kind of it for them.
