part of the team
j’lena finally feeling valid and part of the team
J’lena makes quick and effective work of her hands and does her best to tune out the sounds of blasters blaring through the air above her head. A slight ringing in her ear starts to build and J’lena focuses on her breathing, and work. She catches the reflection of her eyes in Hunter’s visor “Almost done,” she assures, sensing the growing eagerness to get back into the fight in him. The shake that plagued her hands several months ago had long since eased into a barely noticeable tremble, and she is able to finish patching the wound in his leg. It’s superficial, the blaster barely got his leg, but it was enough to make the sergeant drop for a brief moment.
Hunter gives a wordless nod as he sits up. J’lena spots the way he pauses, barely hearing the shrill beeping sailing through the air until it clatters feet away. A bomb.
A chill seizes J’lena’s body for a moment until she forces her body to move and throw herself over Hunter. It’s not much her smaller form could do to shield him, but it’s never stopped her in the past from doing it to protect her patients.
The air whirls around J’lena, and she lets out a startled shriek. Hunter’s body is over her, “Stay down,” He orders calmly. The beeping only lasts seconds more before erupting in a small blast. J’lena holds back a flinch. The explosion is muffled in her ears as she’s pressed closer to his chest armor. Debris clatters around them before Hunter finally eases and moves away. J’lena looks at the sergeant, a loss of words robbing her voice. No one had ever-
Another blast sounds out, followed closely by Wrecker’s pained shout. “Go, I’ll cover you,” Hunter says with a quick jerk of his head to where his brother was. “And be careful,” He adds. J’lena nods, grabbing her equipment. Once Hunter begins to fire back at the enemy, J’lena makes her run, the ringing in her ears now drowned out by the sound of her heart pounding,
*
J’lena huffs and shifts her weight closer to Wrecker, guiding him back onto the Marauder, even with Tech’s help, it wasn’t easy. J’lena settles the large soldier into his seat and examines the quick patching job she did on the field. The ship rumbles with life, and J’lena steadies herself as it takes off.
Finally, two days in that hellscape was enough. At least the mission was a success. It had been her fourth mission with them, and each one proved to be difficult and more dangerous than the last. J’lena never had more fun.
Wrecker gives a dramatic groan as she peels back the bandages. “You’ll survive, big guy” She says with a roll of her eyes, taking out the aid kit from her bag. “The bleedin’ stopped. I just need to clean it properly.”
“I can do that,” Tech’s voice offers. J’lena looks at him as he walks from the cockpit, and tentatively holds the kit to him, “Hunter would like to speak with you,” He adds, taking the aid kit. At that, J’lena tilts her head puzzled, and frowns.
“What? Now?” She questions.
Tech adjusts his goggles and looks at her. “Now.” He confirms, glancing to the cockpit then back to her. Just from the look in his eyes, it gave J’lena all the explanation and warning she needed. She was in some kind of trouble with Hunter. J’lena sighs, running a hand through her curls before trudging into the cockpit.
The sight of stars whizzing by greets J’lena as she steps inside. Hunter is standing at his seat and turns to glance over at her. His tattooed face already made him look intimidating enough, the new cuts and bruises from this mission only added to it, and the severe look in his eyes was not helping. J’lena watches him for a moment, her own eyes watching his every movement as he tosses his helmet down and strides over to her. On instinct, she almost takes a step back but steels herself still and looks up at him.
“What was that?” Hunter demands suddenly.
“What was what?” J’lena asks confused, her brows furrowing.
Hunter frowns. “What you did back there,” He points out, annoyance biting his tone. “On the field. You can not just throw yourself over someone like that, especially if there’s a bomb about to go off,”
J’lena feels her jaw drop. That’s why she’s in trouble? For protecting her team? A humorless smile crosses her lips. “You’re jokin’, right? This is a joke,” J’lena scoffs, shaking her head. “I was protecting you from the blast,”
“That could have hurt you or worse,” Hunter retorts evenly.
“In case you can’t remember, I am a com-bat, med-ic” J’lena sounds out the words, motioning her hands with each. “Do you know what that means, sergeant?” She doesn’t wait for his answer and points at him. “It means that I’m in the thick of the battle with you! As a medic, it is my duty to do what I can to save those in my care! And-”
“And as your sergeant” Hunter cuts in sharply, making J’lena pauses. Her voice seems to vanish when he moves closer, and this time, her foot takes a stumbling step back. “It’s my duty to protect those in my team” He adds, his voice falling low.
J’lena stares up at him, silently pleading that he didn’t catch the surprise in her eyes at his words. From the start of joining them, Hunter had been reluctant about her presence. While he didn’t verbally announce it, unlike a certain sharpshooter, Hunter made it obvious by his actions. It made the first couple of months the most difficult she ever had. Too often she had been resigned to remain on the ship or away from the battles, only tending to the team when they returned. It was not easy to be welcomed, or even fit into a group that had been together for so long. The feeling of being an unwanted newcomer had lingered over her head. Wrecker and Tech had been easier to get along with. All in that time had come to learn in that time Hunter was more of a man to show rather than tell. What he had done to protect her today had been very telling. And now he even said it, he considered her part of the team.
Judging from the slight raise of his brows, and the way his features softened slightly, Hunter did indeed catch the surprised look in her eyes. The silent battle they held with their locked eyes was lost by J’lena when she looks down slightly with a nervous clearing of her throat. “I-” She finally gets out. “I…understand,” She finally says. “But I won’t just-”
Hunter shakes his head, “No.” He stops her. “You will not just put yourself in danger like that anymore,” He says, sidestepping around her. J’lena whips around as she watches his retreating “Not until we get you some proper armor.” He calls back.
J’lena stands alone in the cockpit, allowing realization to finally sink into her. A triumphant grin comes across her lips, before an excited laugh escapes her. Covering her mouth quickly, she scans the area to make sure she’s truly alone before throwing a fist into the air. “Yes!”

SW Prompts Day 10: Hope
ft. j’lena and vexed. this is pretty much a snippet from something longer that i’m working on vital to j’lena’s story
“Vexed, stay awake,” J’lena murmurs gently, giving his shoulder an easy shake. The trooper’s eyes flutter before opening slowly. “With your concussion, it’s not safe to sleep just yet, ya may go in-into a coma or even-”
“Yeah, yeah.” Vexed cuts in with a tired groan, rolling his head to the side to look at her. “I got the gist of it, Doc.”
J’lena gives him a small smile, opening her med bag. “I ramble now and then,” She explains, her tone apologetic. She shuffles around the bag for a moment, “especially when I’m nervous, tired, I’ve been told I ramble when I get tipsy as well.”
“M’ gathering,” Vexed sighs, rolling his eyes. He regrets the action as sharp pain seers through his head. He presses his hand to his head with a groan, J’lena looks at him sympathetically and goes quiet, pulling the bag onto her lap. Vexed breathes in and breathes out, willing the pain to ease before he drops his hand. J’lena finally pulls out a med patch. One of the last that wasn’t damaged. She sets the bag aside, kneeling by him.
“Here, this’ll help,” J’lena says, reaching for his arm. She pauses when Vexed’s hand carefully catches her wrist, stopping her movement.
“Save it, I’ll be fine,” Vexed assures, turning his gaze back to her. At her frown, he smiles and chuckles. “I’ve handled worse,” He adds, looking towards the sky above. J’lena places the med patch away and tilts her head back. There was a break in the heavy smoke allowing a glimpse of the stars. It had always been a comfort for her to see and watch the stars, so contest, yet, ever-changing.
“We’ll get out of here,” J’lena says, unsure if she was promising Vexed of herself.
“How can you have so much hope like that?” Vexed questions.
“Because,” J’lena sighs, leaning back on her hands, and turning her attention back to him. “If I don’t have hope, what else do I have?”
