Wonderful commission for an upcoming story of Gregor, and my OCs, Taliesin Croft/Jame Blackthorn, and J’ohlana Wren from the wonderful @rebekahs-art. Wonderful to work with and a great artist. Go there. Enjoy their work. Commission them.
The story will start posting on Saturday here. It’s called Soldiers and takes place about a year and a half after Order 66. Here’s a preview: (Some adult language)
Gregor walks out of the bar and moves down the dimly lit streets. He makes sure of his surroundings; in spite of the fog, that has marked his existence for he doesn’t know how the hell long for, he is still first and foremost, a soldier.
What he was born to be. He has heard that phrase from many people, to describe their morning-to-evening jobs, their everyday mundane lives.
He grins. He sees a passerby suddenly start at the look in his eyes. He turns the grin down, knowing that the look in his eyes when the fog is most prevalent has the effect of turning people away. None of these day-jobbers could truly say they were born to do anything in the presence of any of his brothers.
He shakes his head as the fog returns to his vision and his mind. He moves quickly into an alley and looks left and right, then to his rear. He slumps against the wall as the miasma starts to enclose his brain. His forehead resting against the synthstone helps center him against the feelings of helplessness as he starts to lose himself in the bright colors moving rapidly in his mind. He hears himself give the giggle that precedes the thoughts jerking through his mind. Rapid thoughts that had sometimes caused him to lose track of where he was and what he was doing.
He feels himself calming as a warm hand touches his shoulder. He feels his thoughts calming as he manages to recognize the voice accompanying the touch.
“Hey, hard-charger. You okay?”
He turns and sees a beskar’gam clad figure smiling at him, her dark eyes crinkling with her smile. His eyes focus on the dark red of the armor, under the smiling, tanned face. Two jewels gleam in the low light in her lower lip, as well as her left nostril.
Cyn Eldar reaches up and brings her hand to his face, furthering the warmth and calm. He feels his lips rise in a smile. In his memory, through the retreating fog, he sees Cyn standing next to an older male—a figure from his own training. He hears Kal Skirata’s words, just before he left for Bothawui Proper. If you need anything, Gregor’ika, Cyn can help you. She’ll be a friend to you, just as Lana’ika will.
As he always does, since he had left to try and find his own way, his emotions twist as he thinks of his rescuer, J’ohlana Wren. He sees her standing defiantly in an arena as she covers his escape.
“Hey, Cyn,” he manages. “What brings you to this shithole?”
“Oh, you know. I was looking for a handsome stud to hold and push the boojums away for him,” she says. “You know any?”
“Well, holding me is nice. Don’t know about the handsome part or the stud part.” He grows serious. “Is everything okay? Is Lana’ika okay?”
“She’s good. She asked me to come find you and see if you’d want to come back to the dojo. She also sent me with somebody that Kal says you might know.” She grins. “Somebody she needed to get out of her hair for a bit.”
She turns and steps out of his view. Gregor’s mind goes through a panoply of emotions in the space of three seconds as the man that he had known as Taliesin Croft steps into view.
His general. His Jedi.
His eyes take in the changes. The fully gray hair—not normal on someone still a few years shy of fifteen, or whatever a slow-ager would be (thirty?)—much shorter now, with only the familiar brindle color in the bit of hair on his chin and over his lip. The three scars on his forehead; scars that form a three-armed oddly-shaped star.
Croft stands there, no fear in any part of his being. One part of Gregor wonders who had told him that a Jedi had nothing to fear from him.
He concentrates on Croft’s face, nothing the things that hadn’t changed. The steady green eyes with their tiny flecks of gold. Eyes that could alternately look at him with warmth and laughter, as well as different temperatures and less laughter on rarer occasions.
Two years or so with this particular Jedi had keyed Gregor to Croft’s emotions. He sees only glimpses of pain and loss; suppressed, of course.
“Hello, Gregor,” Croft says.
“General,” he replies simply, nodding.
The crooked grin of his memory shows. “Not a General anymore. Taliesin Croft is dead,” Croft says.
“Pretty spry for a dead guy,” Gregor replies. An instant later he feels himself engulfed in a tight embrace. His forehead rests against the scars on Croft’s.

Vode An: A Second Act - Chapter 1
Some adult language and themes.
Ahsoka Tano wakes suddenly. The dim light of the credits from the holoscreen plays over the bed. She smiles gently as she looks down at the Aurabesh words playing over the skin of her bed-partner. The low volume of the closing theme reverberates through her montrals.
Ahsoka pulls Bryne tighter into her shoulder, pulling his warmer body into hers. He stirs against her, then his eyes open slowly. He grins sheepishly.
“I’m sorry, Runt,” he whispers. “I picked the holovid, then I fell asleep.”
She kisses him, her lower lip lingering on his. “It’s okay. I fell asleep, as well. Not that I minded waking up next to you, with that song playing.”
He looks down, then away. “Yeah. I know,” is all that he says.
She raises her eyebrows as she watches his eyes grow distant. She brings his chin around with her finger. “So why a musical, Bait?” she asks. “Why not the spy thriller?”
“Too much like work.”
“Comedy?”
“You have me. Why do you need a vid?”
“Asshole,” she says. She feels a devilish grin flow over her face. “There seems to be a great deal of Zeltron porn in the collection.”
His eyebrows raise. “You spent a week on Zeltros several months ago during a fertility festival, losing that bet to me with various Faygan family members. Do you really need a ‘training vid’ as Dani calls it?”
“Well, one, there is still enough debate as to whether I lost the bet first or not. Two, we don’t necessarily need it when the ‘instructor’ is on board.”
“You certainly lost it decisively, when you put your mind to it, sweetie,” he says.
She brings her lips to his, allowing them both to breathe after only a moment or five. As they break away, she realizes he can’t meet her eyes.
“So why the musical? It is almost older than I am,” she asks. She places her face against his chest, inhaling his scent, allowing his chest hairs to tickle her nose.
“It was the only vid we had on the Laughing Beskad,” he replies.
She closes her eyes as she hears the name. The name of an old war-surplus Republic shuttle—home to the man against her skin and battered clone commando.
She kisses his cheek. The ship was also home to a woman who had held his heart for only a brief time. A time when he had thought her dead, and she, him.
His late wife, J’ohlana Wren. The driving force behind a movement—a movement to free their brothers. One that she had been connected with, albeit with no knowledge of the players.
Ahsoka lifts up on her elbow, looking down at him. He meets her eyes, smiling crookedly. She waits patiently, not prompting.
“Gregor, J’oh, and I would watch it together. Gregor loved it. J’oh and I grew to, because it seemed to make him happy.”
“Why did you fall asleep, ie?” she asks gently.
“I thought I could stand to watch it, but I couldn’t,” he says quietly. “I fell into the memories.”
Ahsoka pulls him tightly to her. She listens to his heartbeat.
“I never knew what you were going through, when I would get reports about what the three of you did.”
After a moment, he gets up and walks to the closet. He opens it and walks in. She can hear him lifting the floorboards. She gives a quick grin as she watches him come out.
He surprises her by blushing as her eyes play over his body. He walks over to the holounit and inserts the small chip. He climbs into bed, bringing her against him.
“I think she can tell you better. She recorded these logs. Don’t know who they were for. They might’ve been for our children; they might’ve been to give to you if we all died.”
She gives a quick intake of breath, looking down. He drops down, kissing her on her nose, breaking the mood.
He looks down. “Would you watch her tell our story with me, Ahsoka? I have never watched these before.”
Ahsoka runs her fingers through his hair, touching his temple, then his cheek with the palm of her hand. “Are you sure, Jame? I know that they will hurt.”
He is silent for a moment. “Yes. I think it is time. Time for you to see what she was like.”
She smiles. “I don’t have to. I know the man that she loved.” She looks down, not allowing him to see the beginnings of tears. “I have seen her in my mind, as well.”
Without another word, he touches the start control on the holovid.
Ahsoka hears his breath intake as the holo comes on. She watches him as his eyes fall on the subject’s crooked nose and warm, laughing brown eyes; her dark bronze skin. She lays her head on his shoulder, taking his hand in hers. She watches, rapt, as the young woman begins.
~=~=~=~=~=
My name is J’ohlana Wren. I don’t know who will watch this. I am hoping that at least some of the three of us are alive and watching this. If not, then maybe somebody else that Fulcrum watches over can learn from our mistakes.
We just had our first mission. It didn’t go exactly as planned. Between faulty intelligence (or at least late), having an escape route that depended on the memory of a few flight orientation lessons of our elite, super-high speed Republic commando officer, as well as members of the Grand Army of the Republic who were content to rule a world and end those who were coming to rescue them.
Can’t say that I blame them, at least for the first part.
I guess we didn’t kriff up too much. Fulcrum came calling again. This time through one of my least favorite old bastards. Kal Skirata. The Kalbuir himself.
Of course, I had to keep my two testosterone-overdosed family members from throwing down with his ‘sons’. Another set of oversized versions of Gregor and his brothers. Oversized, overstubborn, and overinfused with a sense of their own worth.
In other words—human males.
Or at least not my human males—my brother who shares my heart and whatever the hell that Corellian who shares my bed is to me. They are both tolerable. For the most part.
Oh. The the fact that one of them shares my bed is probably not something you need to know, Fulcrum—nor does any of your minions looking to learn how do-gooding is done or not done.
Unless you’re interested, of course. He is mildly entertaining. But I would kill or die for him and the brother. Just as I know both would for me.
More importantly, I would live for him. I am not so sure where he stands on living for me, though, after what they both have been through. Gregor, I think is interested in sticking around on this mortal coil. King, I ain’t so sure of. Not sure with some of the shit that he has pulled, whether he won’t someday find it easier to join his dead.
I think I may underestimate my ability to keep him in the light. Especially since I am fighting to stay in it myself, with some of the things I have done as a member of Death Watch.
So this little shindig is starting on Tatooine. It involves a corrupt Imperial Advisor on Zygerria. (I know. I know. Ain’t most of them?) Of course, neither Tattooine nor Zygerria are exactly garden spots for basic sentient rights.
I guess all that anyone can say, Fulcrum, is that we are all trying. Gotta run. Vode An is going active again. I’ll be in touch.
Approximately One Year and Nine Months after the Fall of the Republic The Outer Rim
J’ohlana Wren rests against the back wall of the cantina watching wannabe bounty hunters clustering around the Holonet, waiting for the daily spitting out of of wants and warrants. She shakes her head in her bucket, laughing softly.
Kal Skirata and his ale-gut walk up and sit down in front of her. She eases the blaster from its holster and sets it down on her knee under the table. Even though this meeting had been set up by her contact, a mysterious figure known as Fulcrum, she wasn’t sure how Kal would take the fact that she had left his training dojo without even a ten-day’s notice.
You leave pretty quickly when one side of your family gets their asses kicked by your new boyfriend, supposedly for your hand in marriage, she thinks.
While the half that matters gives you permission to marry him from Krownest.
“Hello, dear,” the old man starts. In spite of the well-fed front part of him, the rest of Kal Skirata’s body is as hard as it ever was. His eyes are clear and he bears a smile on his face. Or at least what passes for a smile.
“Hello, Kal,” she says. “Been a few months.”
“Not my fault, Lana,” he says.
She looks around, sees several very large figures in mismatched armor around the room. She grins. The Sons of Skirata. The remaining Null-class clones who he had adopted and forged into formidable weapons in the late war. She closes her eyes as she hears King’s Corellian drawl recount the story of Drop, another of that class of clone. His closest friend—his right hand.
A Null who had been rejected by Skirata, forcing him to find his own way.
“You know, we could use you on Mand’ayim,” he says. “Saxon and his lackeys—,” he starts again, in spite of her upraised hand.
“Don’t care. Mando clan politics bore the shit out of me. You can talk to my sister Ursa about the lost glory of Mandalore. I only care about me and mine, as well as me and mine’s brothers and other slaves. What have you got for me?”
He starts to reply, just as a loud crash sounds near where one of his sons were last seen.
She grins as she sees what has caused the crash. A cause that seems to be picking himself up and hurling himself at one of the behemoths.
Kal’s look, however, is thunderous. “Can’t you curb that damned Corellian whelp?” he grumbles.
“Why? You afraid he might break one of your sons? Prove to the universe that they can get their asses kicked?”
Skirata grins. “Nope. Just want you to be able to look at him while riding him. Before a Skirata pounds his face to pulp.”
“You worry about your own rides, old man, and your sons’ pretty faces.”
As if to punctuate her words, one of the Nulls slips to the floor clutching himself.
J’ohlana allows herself to laugh as Kal gets up. The muzzle of a clone’s DC-17m pokes him in his ample gut.
“Please sit down, Sergeant. Tell the little lady what she needs to hear,” Captain Gregor says. He grins. “Or she’ll hurt you. I’m just the comic relief.”
