Thinking about the skewed gender roles and social cues between the Uchiha and the Senju sooooo much

Uchiha:

•armor-if you wear it it means you feel you need more protection and are scared of getting hurt. Commonly worn by aging shinobi or younger ones

•hair-if it’s short you are incapable of caring for it properly and need someone else to do it for you. If it’s long you have the attention to detail and care needed.

Senju:

•armor-if you wear it you have enough money/connections to get something that actively won’t hinder you it battle. You have the strength to wear it for prolonged periods of time without tiring you or slowing you down.

• hair- The shorter it is the less time you spend on personally vanity and the more time you can spend working for the good of the clan. While it’s not a physical trait that’s frowned upon exactly, it’s more common for off duty shinobi or children who haven’t gone into the field yet. It gained some popularity in the clan among active duty nin when Hashirama grew his out but it took a while before they stopped giving their clan head the side eye and started to do the same.

OH MAN I LOVE IT....

I think there's something to be said for clothing as well. the uchiha all wear those massive coat-dress situations, while the senju are in shirts and pants with armor layered on top. i think it would be fun to argue this is because the uchiha are holding onto more traditional/historical dress (Kosodes, lets say) where everyone wore the same style of clothing regardless of gender. civilians wear more modern clothes, because they're focused on self-image and fashion etc etc etc.... the uchiha shinobi express that same self-image interest by having their war-clothes made out of the most impressive materials, dyed the most beautifully, embroidered the uchiwa most perfectly, etc. Izuna's wearing the perfect indigo-leather war coat ever made with precision embroidery, and it's Peak Masculinity amongst his people.

They view modern styles of clothing as a sign of being obsessed with how you look. it can't be for practical reasons, the war coat design is already perfect, and changing your clothes will waste your time trying to learn how to move in the new style. It's total vanity, as far as the uchiha are concerned.

The senju, meanwhile, are all about trying new things, developing new styles. They invented ninjawire! Tobirama is figuring out how to weave it smaller and tighter, perhaps one day all their fabric could be made in this method....why stay stuck in the past when innovation awaits?
