Chapter 61 - The Worst Combo

it's been a year, almost, since the war.

izuku would like to say that relatively everything has gone off as normal — or at least, as normal as training to be heroes at UA to be. there are still, of course, some discontentment brewing outside. voices questioning this newfound peace: how long will it last until the next large villain looms ? could promises from heroes genuinely be believed in ? are such glamorisation of heroes in reality damaging to the work they were meant to do ?

the hero public safety commission, in turn, had been put under heavy investigation - so incidents like hawks and lady nagant wouldn't ever happen again.

that is all to say, life does move on. slowly, treacherously, day-by-painful-day, but it does. the bells of the school ring. the cafeteria packs itself with students. homework, as homework tends to do, pile up. it's time for their quirk training, and class 2-A are chattering among themselves as they exit to their respective locker rooms for an attire-change. izuku's caught in his head about a manoeuvre he'd like to try out when someone brushes past him. kaminari-kun, laughing, before he joins kacchan who's already walking besides kirishima-kun.

it's- staggering, all of a sudden. it's silly, because for a moment izuku feels like it's middle school all over again, hunching along the back of the crowd so he'd be far enough to observe kacchan without being seen. it's— it's not like that anymore, is it ? no. because kacchan's already apologised, and they're talking again — properly — and it's good, it's better than good, and they've come a long way now, and all should be fine, but—flashes: kacchan, on the ground, blood around his mouth, an all might collectable card by the side of his head, and he's dead, kacchan died, and it's all because shigaraki wanted to give deku a ' present ' and—

don't worry, they still talk. kacchan and him, he means, but izuku's been careful now to keep his distance. though for that one second, he allows himself this : the back of kacchan's head. the small glimpse of what he thinks is a grin. was kaminari-kun telling a joke ? how nice. to tell kacchan a joke.

Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. izuku's starting to really catch on by what his friends have been saying, he thinks. over the fact that his... his crush on kacchan is—you know—a bit obvious. because how is it that the moment kacchan had said ( threatened, really, according to some primal part of his brain izuku is trying his best not to indulge ) that he would find other people to train with, blackwhip had shot out of his body and wrap itself around bakugou katsuki's frame ? and izuku could feel it too, the power thrumming ( responding ) to that few seconds long agitation at the simple suggestion of being replaced.

blackwhip doesn't let up, though as soon as izuku's made aware of their presence, he wills them to loosens their initial grip. kacchan enters his proximity and—worse—izuku could feel his warm gloves catching at izuku's wrist.

kacchan! touching him!!

izuku's whole face feels warm, and the blonde spoke some more. he's challenging izuku, he knows. goading him, really, so izuku'll let up his defence and respond and he'll— he'll look at those eyes again, those viciously captivating smirk, and kacchan's handsome face posturing in triumph because every suspicion will be true: izuku, as a matter of fact, could not resist bakugou katsuki. in that sense, izuku nearly smiles from the predictability, though the thumping of his heart has him focused on why exactly he does not want to fall for this trick.

still, he lowers his hands. still, he slowly opens his eyes and... he's right. kacchan is beautiful, and izuku could feel himself softening, wanting so badly to give in, give whatever kacchan wants, though he quickly blurts out, clenching his fists by his side, because if he has to agree, then: ❛⠀— what do i get out of it, kacchan ? ❜
