in Polly Wanna Pizza, raphael is outraged to discover polly in the chest of belongings at the foot of his bed. his joke books! his green avenger costume! his signed picture of shecky schtick!

i can see how a signed picture would be a precious rarity for a mutant turtle -- maybe acquired secondhand, or by approaching the guy incognito? i think he did his best to salvage it with tape, and patch the green avenger costume (i got the tailor raphael headcanon from the disguise class he took in Turtle of a Thousand Faces and his firm opinions about michelangelo's tie in the mobster episode.)

3) who depends on them

so first off, he's aunt aggie's favorite. if she has to pick a turtle to skateboard her around the city, bust into a building, etc, raphael's her guy.

moving on -- this is an interesting one, because the other turtles rarely turn to raphael specifically for aid the way they do donatello and leonardo. he tends to swoop in as part of a dependable team. raphael's a teenage mutant ninja turtle; he embodies the comforting knowledge that The Real Ninja Turtles Are On Your Side for characters like mona lisa, and he's proud to do it!

i do think the other turtles rely on him to call bullshit when bullshit happens to them. like, they're heroes, they'll put up with unfair and thankless work, they'll sprint directly into danger in the name of Doing The Right Thing, but it's good for them to have a guy who acknowledges this as they do it.

he's also always good for a distraction. all four turtles excel at baiting their enemies, but raphael is the master of maddening peskiness.

lots of people forget about how very much neurodivergent they have always been protrayed lol

especially thinking about the ppl that hate on the most recent TMNT adaptations, and i feel it partially has to do with "eVeRyBoDy iS AuTiSTiC tOdAy", bu honestly, 1987 are very audhd, as well as the ones in the 90s movies

every turtle from every TMNT universe are neurodivergent / audhd, simply different flavours of it

Hiya! I’ve recently started watching 87 tmnt (out of order, but so far haven’t run into any issues with that), and I was wondering if you had any specific episodes you’d recommend? Whether it’s because it’s got really good writing or it gives a good understanding of a specific character or it’s just generally enjoyable - whatever the reason may be, I’d be interested to hear. So far it’s been a really fun time and I’m excited to keep watching!

Ohhh! Ok. So let’s see… you definitely want to watch the 1st season, it’s only 5 episodes. I think I’m gonna recommend too many here… But!

Splinter No More

The Big Blow Out (has my favorite Brains and Brawn moment) though you may need to watch the previous episode or two since this is a season finale and you might be a bit confused

(Enter the RatKing, Enter the Fly, Return of the Fly, Invasion of the Punk Frogs, Leatherhead Terror of the Swap, 50 Foot Irma, Casey Jones Outlaw Hero, Yusagi Yojimbo, Michelangelo Meets Mondo Gecko, Raphael Meets his Match (Mona Lisa), Slash the Evil Turtle from Dimension X, all seem like good episodes since you see these characters in other iterations.)

I love a few of the Red Sky episodes like Cry H.A.V.O.C! And Cyber-Turtles! But they do attempt more of a serialized story here. So I would watch from the beginning.

Leonardo's turn for a POV chapter. And I earn the "villain death" tag.

I recently discovered the Girl Genius fic Well Met at Mechanicsburg (co-written by @iztarshi), and I love it so much! It's set when Agatha & Co. are little kids, and it's a glorious fix-it fic where most of the nastier events of canon either come out way better or are averted completely, thanks to Barry, Klaus, and the kids actually talking to and trusting each other.

One of my favorite things about this fic is how Barry often acts as a supportive, approachable father figure for the boys as well as Agatha. Therefore, my brain wouldn't leave me alone until I drew some moments of Barry Heterodyne Being Good With Kids:

- no particular scene, just Agatha’s usual way of greeting her uncle

- Barry getting Gil’s side of the Records Vault incident

- Tarvek asking “What do you do if your family is evil?” (yes, I know there’s supposed to be a beegle on his lap, but I didn’t feel like figuring out how to draw it)

Summary: After Anthy leaves at the end of the series, Touga goes on to inherit her role and the duelling cycle starts again with a not entirely new batch of duelists. Saionji and Nanami are still there trying to help him eventually get out.

I’ve been working on the Mechanicsburg Tarot that @iztarshi thought up.

So far I’ve only done these four cards, but now I’ve made new borders and a design for the backs!

I also digitized and then printed them onto cardstock, so they’re like real cards now!

Have you read the novel Don't Pick Up Boyfriends from the Trash Bin? It does very interesting things with transmigration, revenge, and catharsis.

I actually saw Iztarshi's tags on my post and decided to give it a try before bedtime, but then I stayed up until 2am binging the first arc.

TMNT ask game 1, what is your favourite iteration/version?

my favorite iteration is 87! honestly a large part is that i love the theme song; it makes me smile every time. i think the turtle designs are really cute. i love the voice acting. and the ridiculous mad science is my favorite. i love when donatello (or krang) says words that definitely have real-world meanings but absolutely not in this context, and there are blinking lights and laser beams and pipes with steam coming out of them. i love unabashed nonsense. i also relate to leonardo; i was that bossy teenager trying to get everyone to do the right thing, with mixed results. it warms my heart that he's sometimes inspiring, sometimes overbearing, and the other turtles all love him dearly.

i guess i love unabashed nonsense along with genuine, openhearted caring.

i got into tmnt via rise, and i still enjoy it immensely. but i fell totally in love with the 87s.

3. Surprise Party – TMNT 1987 

This is totally inspired by iztarshi's birthday loop fic please go check it out.

After a very long day of fending off several well-meaning friends, acquaintances, and enemies—those might not have been well-meaning. Probably not? Hard to say—Leonardo is exhausted.

Who knew unplanning surprise parties was even harder than planning them?

Look, Raphael made it very clear last year that he did not enjoy his birthday, nor did he appreciate anyone's attempts to make him celebrate it. Leonardo could make some sacrifices to respect those wishes.

But after a whole day of it, he is really and truly beat, so when Michelangelo suggests ordering in and having a movie night, he readily forgoes his planned meditation session. Pizza and bad monster movies: the great panacea for every teenage turtle.

He unsurprisingly spends most of the film just shy of sleep until the snap of the television shutting off startles him back to awareness. Raphael releases the remote to the clutches of the couch cushions with a jaw-cracking yawn.

Donatello and Michelangelo, he notices, are curled together on a pillow nest at the base of the couch. They likely drifted off partway through the movie, equally exhausted from their day of misadventures.

"Well, gang," Raphael announces, perhaps unaware they're the only two awake, "It's officially a new day. And I must say, I am just so crushed that not one of you wished me a happy birthday yesterday."

Confusion laps at the edge of his consciousness as the words filter in. Was it really past midnight alre—

Wait. Crushed? By what?

No, not physically. He's upset. With them?

Oh no, he's hurt his little brother, hasn't he? He told Donatello they should have asked Raphael before making plans behind his back. Leonardo lurches forward to grab Raphael in a hug.

"Oh, you're awake," Raphael pats his shell automatically, "and crying. I was kidding, Leonardo."

Crying, right. The jumble of sensations on his face is starting to make more sense. He clings a little more.

"Man, I always forget how weepy you are when you're tired." Raphael shuffles around, readjusting for as much comfort as possible with his arms full of sniffling turtle.

Raphael sighs, "Look, I may not be a Ninja Master, O Great One, but my senses work perfectly well. Despite what I will magnanimously assume were your best efforts, I know what you three got up to today."

Leonardo blinks until he's somewhere a little closer to wakefulness. "Oh."

"And Michelangelo might be loud, but Mondo Gecko is a lot louder."

He giggles at the memory of Michelangelo trying to yell over Mondo Gecko. At about midday, he'd all but invaded the lair with an unholy number of streamers and party hats, singing "Happy Birthday" at the top of his lungs. "Oh."

Raphael peers down at him with a smirk, "Eloquent."

He leans up to double-check Raphael is un-crushed physically and emotionally, smushing his cheeks with great seriousness. "So, you’re not upset?"

"No, Leonardo." Raphael endures the smothering but not without sounding incredibly put upon. "I am not upset about our quote-unquote 'absolutely, one hundred percent normal, honestly-it'll-just-be-like-any-other day.'"

They both chuckle at the reminder of Donatello's words that morning. They sound silly coming from Raphael, but he has a gift for matching their brother's unwavering earnestness with biting humor.

Then quietly, so quietly Leonardo only hears it because he is fully in Raphael's personal space, he begrudgingly adds, "A day that the three of you went to truly ridiculous lengths to maintain."

And maybe he's just tired, worn out, and bleary, but tucked beneath the familiar sass, Leonardo detects a kernel of gratitude.  

"Oh."

With a magnificent roll of his eyes, Raphael finally shoves him away. "Well, now you just sound like a broken record. How are you still awake? You look like the dead."

"Because I am." He sinks back into Raphael's arms, words muffled as he nuzzles closer. "You are speaking with the ghost of Leonardo."

"Hah! Go to sleep, you goof."

"Hmmkay. Good night, Raphael. Happy unbirthday."

He huffs, "Who, me?"

And then Leonardo finally, blessedly falls asleep.

Last song I listened to: Either "Seventeen (Reprise)" or "A Real Life" (Greek Fire). As the last song in the Heathers soundtrack the first one gives the impression I just relistened to the musical. Actually I was looping the last four songs specifically. For vibe reasons.

Currently reading: Caught up on the ORV comic adaptation last night, now I need to get the novel onto my phone so I can finish it.

Currenly watching: Uhhhh kind of nothing? Every few days I hang out with friends in voicechat and we watch Something but none of that's currently an Active Project. MAWS has been good.

Current obsession: In the "nudging computer every few hours hoping more will fall out" stage with the Cass Apocalypse AU and Bon Voyage, cycling restlessly between them as you do. Also The One Unpublished Original Project but that's a chronic thing.
