Grey Like Silver, Red Like Rubies
Marcia is nervous. Very nervous.
Today is the day. She'll meet her fiancée for the first time. A prince, the oldest prince. Izeck is his name.
The little blond girl plays with the fabric of her skirt. "Marcia." The strict voice of her mother warns. The little girl looks up and lets go of the dress.
Right, she has to look perfect. She's going to be a princess, after all. Even empress later in life.
Her gaze wanders outside of the carriage. She looks at trees and villages as her mind wanders.
Different scenarios are playing in her head. Officially, she's supposed to meet Princess Ellen - her fiancées twin sister. Unofficially, it's the first meet-up between her and her fiancée.
Marcia thinks it's kind of weird. Why are kids getting engaged? What does it even mean to be engaged. She would ask her mother, but she's been very stressed lately.
A big white castle on top of a hill catches her attention. It's gigantic. Marcia's green eyes sparkle. Is that where she's going to live?
Once Marcia is outside of the carriage, she smiles. She has the urge to run around the big wide garden, her mother would kill her if she did that though.
"Marcia." Her mother's strict voice once again catches her attention. "We are supposed to follow after the servant." The woman looks at the man in front of her.
Marcia quickly walks to her mother. She's careful to look really lady-like while she does that. Just like her mother thought her.
The garden is even prettier. A bunch of gorgeous flowers everywhere. Marcia eyes sparkle as she looks around.
Her mother's voice catches her attention once again. "Greetings to the moon of the empire." She says as she bows. Marcia looks at the woman.
Long silky looking red hair, brilliant blue eyes, sharp facial features, and a slight smile. A gorgeous woman is standing in front of her.
Marcia is frozen in place as she stares. She doesn't even hear her mother sigh. "I apologise, your majesty, I suppose you know how children can be."
The red haired woman chuckles and raises her head in a dismissive move. "It's alright." She pauses. "The lady is nine years old correct?"
Marcia's mother shakes her head. "Eight. Marcia will be nine this summer, your majesty."
"Ah. I apologise." Says the woman. "Eight." She mumbles and covers her mouth. She looks at Marcia for a moment. Then she looks at a black haired maid. "Call Ellen and Izeck." She says. "Livia too." Adds the empress.
She looks from the servant back to Marcia. The little girl quickly fixes her posture. "Ellen and Izeck are both ten." Says the lady. "I thought it might be nice if you had another kid your age with you. Livia is a few months younger than you, so please look after her for me, alright?"
Marcia nods eagerly. Her mother clears her throat. "Yes, your majesty." Says Marcia quickly. The red-haired woman chuckles again. "No need to be so stiff. I'll be your mother-in-law in the near future, after all. Just call me mother..." She glances at Marcia's mother. "...or mother-in-law."
Marcia nods once again. This time she corrects herself all on her own. "Yes, mother-in-law." She says quickly.
The woman chuckles and turns back to Marcia's mother. Then she glances to Marcia and from her to a ginger maid. "Lead the lady to the green house. I find it hard to believe Livia would want to be outside in this hot weather."
"Yes, your majesty." Says the maid servant and turns towards Marcia. "Please follow me, my lady."
The garden is gigantic. A part of Marcia already knew that, the other is surprised at just how big.
The servant leads Marcia until they reach a big building made entirely out of glass. For some reason, you can't look inside, though.
Marcia steps inside with small steps. She walks as careful and delicate as possible. All the hours of etiquette lesson have to have some purpose after all.
The glass building is see-through from the inside. It's full of gorgeous flowers that look more expensive than she wants to even imagine. It's a comfortable temperature inside. It's not as hot as it is outside. It's almost cold.
Her attention is caught by a table sitting in the middle of the building. Three children are already sitting there. Two girls and one boy.
The blond girl immediately knows who they are. Her eyes catch rubine red ones. A girl with sliver hair looks at her. She looks proper. She's obviously from high high society.
On her right sits another girl. She has the same red hair as the empress, but instead of the blue eyes, she has red ones. She has her mothers features, though. Strict but soft at the same time. It's hidden behind a bit of baby-fat.
Across from the red-haired girl (Livia, guesses Marcia) sits a boy with silver hair. He and the first girl look like carbon copies of each other... Well, if you ignore that one of them is obviously a girl.
"Ah..!" Marcia bows quickly. "Greetings, my name is Marcia-" She's rudly interrupted by a chair being pulled forward. At some point, the sliver haired boy stood up and pulled the chair out for her. "We know who you are." He says simply.
Marcia wants to curse at him. How dare he interrupt her? She practiced that greeting so hard. "Thank you." She mumbles and bows and sits down. Izeck pushes the chair back and then sits down.
The girl to Marcias left looks at her with curious eyes. "So you'll marry my brother?" She asks and tilts her head.
Marcia nods. "Yes, as far as I'm aware."
"Livia, by the way." Says the red-haired girl. The girl across from Marcias clears her throat. Red-head - Livia - rolls her eyes. "It's nice to meet you, lady Marcia. My name is Livia."
"My name is Ellen." Says the silver haired girl. She gives her brother a look. He sighs but then looks at Marcia. "Izeck." He says simply.
Ellen sighs, displeasure is written all over her face. "I apologise. It seems neither of my siblings have had proper etiquette lessons."
Marcias giggles. "It's alright, Your Highness." She says. Ellen shakes her head. "Just Ellen is enough."
Livia keeps looking Marcia. A part of her worries if she's doing something wrong at the intense look. "No, that won't do." Says Livia and shakes her head. "You can't marry my brother."
Marcia freezes. Oh no, did she do something wrong? Did she already make one of her future sisters in law hate her?
"Livia." Says Ellen in a strict tone. "Don't even think about it."
Livia pouts. "But sister! Lady Marcia is so cute, and brother is... Well, he's Izeck." Livia says his name like it's an insult. Ellen just shakes her head.
Oh, it's just sibling bickering. It had nothing to do with Marcia.
She glances over at Izeck. He's just looking bored. Wow, he really doesn't want to be here, hm?
She understands that. She, too, would rather be home than here. Still, she has to suffer through it.
Her eyes wander to her soon to be husband. He is pretty. She doesn't think she's ever seen a prettier ten year old. He has silver hair and red eyes. His eyes look like expensive stones. She finds it hard to believe they even are actual eyes and not gem stones.
His eyes are even brighter than Ellen's. Truly, Izeck is a gorgeous boy.
Marcia almost feels ugly compared to them.
Almost.
The tea party was boring for the most part. She talked more to Ellen and Livia than the boy she was supposed to talk to.
As Marcia is brought back to her mother, she thinks that she would rather marry Livia or Ellen than Izeck. He's too quiet and boring.
"Ah, it seems your daughter is back duchess." Says the empress. A smile is still plastered onto her face. It's still formal.
Marcias mother nods. "Yes, indeed. I suppose it's time to go back now, isn't it Marcia?"
The blond girl nods. "Yes, mother."
Well, this won't work, thinks Marcia on the drive back home.

Four months pass before Marcis meets him again. It's a hunting competition, together with the imperial family of the Obelian Empire.
Marcia has spent a few summers in the empire. Her aunt comes from here after all.
It's snowing, which is rare. Marcia wanders off, not caring about the now dead animals or the killing of them. She much rather spend her time playing with the snow. So she does.
Once she's done with her snowman, she smiles. "Perfect!"
She hears a sound and turns around to look at the person behind her. Izeck stands there. His cheeks are slightly red, but that is probably because of the cold.
"Your highness!" She squeaks and bows. Izeck shakes his hand in dismissal. "No need to be so formal."
"Right... I apologise." Says Marcia.
Izeck looks at her, and Marcia looks at him. He looks pretty, and the snow fits his hair. He looks like he was meant to leave somewhere where it snows a lot.
They should move somewhere where it snows a lot, Marcia decides. Yeah, as soon as they are married, she'll make sure of that.
Izeck clears his throat. "You look very pretty today."
Marcia blushes. "You think so?" She asks. "Really?"
She receives a lot of compliments, so this isn't new. Still, he surprises her. She wasn't expecting a compliment from him.
"Did Ellen tell you to compliment me?" She asks. "Or your mother?"
The boy sighs and nods. "Yeah, my mother said I should compliment you when I see you next... Ellen did, too."
The blond girl chuckles. "I see, I expected as much." I zeck shakes his head. "But you do look pretty. The dress is... nice?"
Marcia rolls her eyes. Wow, he really knows how to do that.
"Thank you, your highness... Er, no, Izeck." Marcisa gives him a small smile. Izeck hums.
"You're making a snowman..." He says and then pauses for a moment. "Can I maybe help you?"
Marcias look from the snowman to him. It's already done, but Izeck seems to want to build some sort of relationship... Mh...
"Well, this one is already done, but we can always make him a friend, can't we?" She suggests and steps closer to Izeck. She grabs his wrist and smiles at him.
"Yeah... sure..." He says. Marcia smiles and pulls him him towards the snowman.
Maybe this is going to work after all, thinks Marcia as she watches Izeck build the snowman.
