flower love

synopsis - a small flower always seemed to follow you and hyewon no matter the situation. perhaps this flower represented you seemingly never ending love. it was the flower of your love.

“hyem!” you said while running towards the other girl. “i got this pretty flower for you.”

the girl stared at the small star jasmine flower which seemed to be missing a few petals and could barely stand.

“isn’t it pretty?” you said, placing the flower in her hand. you wiped a few drops of sweat from your forehead and smiled before speaking again. “i think you are prettier than that flower.”

she just smiled at you and muttered a small ‘thank you’ while staring keenly at the little white flower. that was the earliest memory you have of spring

“hyewon!” you yelled while running down the stairs, nearly losing your footing and falling down. “my mom gave me my allowance, wanna get ice cream?” you asked holding up a few bills of different colors.

hyewon nodded her head as you took her hand and walked to the nearest convenience store. as you walked along the path you spotted a star shaped flower. you began to walk towards it and you smiled as you admired the small flower.

“hyem, do you remember this flower, it’s the one i gave you a long time ago.” you beamed. “it’s really pretty, right?”

she nodded her head and carefully observed the while flower, studying all the details. her faced warmed up as she remembered the memory she had grown fond of. “yes, it’s very pretty.”

she slipped her hand back into yours as if that was the way it was meant to be. it felt natural, as if they were made for one another. perhaps the greeks were right, two people used to be one but were separated. it felt like you two were meant to be one. your hearts beat at the same time, stepped with the same foot at the same time and pace, even your breathing seemed to line up.

“what ice cream would you like?” you asked, giving her hand a soft squeeze.

“vanilla, like always.” she replied, rubbing the back of your hand with her thumb.

“then i’ll get strawberry,” you said, smiling down at the floor. “like always.”

“do you know the name of the flower we saw earlier?” hyewon asked, turning to face you.

“it’s a star jasmine.” you quickly replied. “why do you ask?”

“i just think it’s a pretty flower.” she replied. “does it mean anything?”

“it often means love, beauty, and purity. it all depends on the place.” you said.

“you studied it?” she asked as her eyes slightly widened.

“a little bit, i see it everywhere.” you respond. “well, not everywhere. just when we're out together.”

hyewon only hummed in understanding. the rest of the walk remained silent aside from the occasional cough or sneeze. soon enough you had reached the convenience store. hyewon opened the door and you thanked her before bee lining straight to the ice cream section. you picked up a pint of strawberry and a pint of vanilla.

“want anything else?” you asked, closing the freezers door.

“no, i’m good.” hyewon responded. “won’t it melt on the way back?”

“it might but that’s for when we get back home. i want to take you somewhere.” you said, prompting hyewon to raise a brow at your statement. “i think you’ll like it.”

you paid for the ice cream and began your walk back to home. you held the bag in your left hand and held hyewon’s hand with your right. you made idle conversations which was mostly complaining about the hot weather. the time seemed to fly by as you reached your house.

“i’ll put this in the fridge and be right out.” you said bolting up the stairs. roughly seven minutes had passed and you returned to hyewon’s side. “i brought the bus fare money.”

“i can pay for my own, i brought some change too.” hyewon chimed in after realizing that you had paid for her earlier.

“we need to hurry the bus is going to leave soon.” you said, taking her hand in yours and sprinting. hyewon trailed after you, trying to keep up with your pace. after running for a few minutes, you reached the bus stop and barely managed to get on the bus. you both paid the fare and sat down.

you were both panting and attempting to catch your breath.

“sorry i made you run.” you mumbled. “i didn't keep track of time and i-”

“don’t apologize.” hyewon said. “it felt nice, it's a nice change of pace, literally.” she joked.

you laughed a little and then intertwined your hands once again. “i’m glad i get to do this with you hyem.”

hyewon hummed and rested her head on your shoulder while she played with the hem of her shirt. “i’m glad i get to do this with you too.” she responded.

you two sat in silence the rest of the ride. after about 30 minutes you had finally arrived.

“we’re here.” you said, giving hyewon’s hand a gentle squeeze.

hyewon stood up and followed after you. quickly getting off the bus, your walk to a nearby park.

“i heard that this is the best place to see the sunset,” you said. “at least the best in the area.”

the blades of grass moved with the wind as you walked uphill with hyewon following closely behind you.

as you reached the top hyewon spoke up. “it’s perfect.”

you sat down the grass and gestured hyewon to sit. “i’ve only been here once before this.”

“really?” hyewon asked. “when?”

“a few weeks ago.” you replied, closing your eyes and letting the fresh breeze graze your burning skin.

“why you choose this park?” she asked.

“i wanted a place to rest with you.” you responded as you took a long breath. “i went to a couple dozen different places, none could compare to this one.”

hyewon’s eyes widened at your statement but then felt her heart swell at your actions. “thank you.”

“no need to thank me,” you said. “just enjoy the moment.”

so that’s what she did. she let her eyes close and felt the wind, the burn of the late june sun on her skin, and the feeling of your hand in hers. it felt as if it was just you two and the sun. the sound of people conversing and laughing filled her ears and warmed her heart. this was the best moment she could have, or at least that’s what she thought.

hyewon turned to look at you and said, “we should do this more often.”

“sounds like a good idea.” you responded, still facing the now setting sun.

fifteen 𖤣.𖥧.𖡼.⚘

as the leaves lost their green color and fell, it seemed as if something else was losing it’s color. hyewon had become cold and distant, much more than she normally was. you wondered if you had done something wrong.

walking up to the kang’s front door was something that wasn’t uncommon. yet it somehow felt like the first time. you raised your hand and knocked three times. you waited a few moments before hyewon’s mom opened the door.

“hello mrs kang, is hyewon home?” you asked.

“she is, i’ll let her know you’re here.” she said, closing the door and presumably going to let hyewon know that you were outside.

after what seemed to be an eternity hyewon came out. “hey.” she said.

“hey!” you said, smiling softly at her. “wanna go to a bookstore i found?”

“um, sure.” she said.

after a quick fifteen minute walk to the bookstore, you looked around for a book in specific. once you found it, you pulled it out from the shelf and held it up for hyewon to see.

“i’ve read this book about four times,” you started. “each time i reread it, i cry even harder than the last time.”

“every day..?” hyewon read aloud. “what’s it about?”

“it's tricky to explain, but i like it a lot.” you said. “although i like the second part more, you can really feel the grief through the words.”

hyewon stared at you as if you were insane. “what are you trying to tell me?”

“i want to buy the book for you,” you said. “i think you would also like it.” your finger grazed the spines of the other books on the shelf. not finding the second book, you moved away from the shelves and towards the registers.

hyewon stayed silent as you payed for the book and handed it to her.

“it’s good and it’s not too long.” you said. “i read in around eight hours.”

hyewon didn’t know what to say in this situation. “i think im going to take more than a day reading it.”

“take your time with it.” you said. “enjoy it.”

she nodded her head and trailed behind you. the walk back home was awkward and painfully silent. when you finally got back home you stopped and looked at hyewon. “let me know if you like the book, i’ll buy you the second part.”

she nodded and dejectedly smiled at you. “i will.”

before hyewon fully entered her home you said, “thank you for today hyem,” you said, waving happily at her. “let’s do this again some time.”

as the time had passed you and hyewon had drifted apart. you had made more friends, and so had she. although once inseparable, you two had now become something similar to strangers. only exchanging words when needed. you had never returned to the hill.

you constantly asked yourself how this happened. how had you drifted apart so far that you had lost your way. the memory of that day on the hill had become a special memory in your heart. you remembered feeling calm but nervous, this feeling had never faded over the years. after parting ways slowly, your heart had ached for so long.

the feeling of sinking had become constant, as if it had been with you for so long. you wondered what would happen if you knocked on her door and asked to speak to her. how would she react if you took her to that hill. you asked yourself many questions over the years. then your doorbell rang, bringing you back into reality.

you walked to the door and asked who it was.

“it’s me.” the recognizable voice said.

your heart dropped and you took a few steps away from the door. you took a deep breath and opened the door.

“can i help you?” you asked, trying to not sound rude.

“could we,” she paused. “talk?”

you nodded your head and closed your door. you walked back to your room and grabbed a jacket. tossing the piece of clothing on, you walked back to the front door where you slipped into your shoes and walked out.

“what do you wanna talk about?” you asked.

hyewon had stayed silent, not really knowing how to answer. she took a deep breath and opened her mouth to speak.

“i wanted to explain why i stopped talking to you.” she muttered. “i know it’s probably too late to apologize, but i just wanted to let you know.”

you stayed silent and waited for her to speak again.

“i, uh, don’t really know how to tell you this.” she said, playing with the silver ring on her finger.

“then don't tell me.” you said, although you always wanted to know the answer.

“i have to tell you,” she responded, turning to look at you. “the guilt has been eating away at me for the past year.”

you sighed exasperatedly. “then just get it over with.”

hyewon looked down at the floor and stopped. “i liked you.” she said.

“what?”

“i liked you.” she restated. “i thought you were going to think i was gross, so i pulled away from you.”

“you,” you said, breathlessly. “liked me?”

shocked had become evident on your face and hyewon didn’t like that look. she was worried she had finally ended whatever remained from your friendship.

“i just wanted you to know that i still do.” she added. “but since i’m going off to college you won't have to be near me.”

“hyem..” you said. it had been a long time since she had heard that nickname. “i don’t think you’re gross.”

she stood still and breathed a sigh of relief.

“i,” you hesitated. “i also liked you.” you said.

hyewon’s jaw dropped and her eyes began to swell with tears.

“don’t cry.” you said, pulling her into your arms. “i hate seeing you cry.” you patted her back lightly as she sniffled.

“did you ever read the book i bought you?” you asked as you sipped some coffee.

“i did.” hyewon responded. “i read it every other year.”

“want the second part?” you asked as your eyes widened just a bit. “there’s a book store nearby.”

“let’s go then.” hyewon said, standing up and taking your hand.

“did you wait all these years for me to buy you the second book?” you asked, turning to look at her side profile. “or did you just now remember the book existed?”

“would it be bad to say i’ve waited a while?” she laughed.

“it makes me feel like a lousy lover.” you joked. “oh, what am i to do, i have broken my promise to my beloved.” you exaggerated.

“you could buy your beloved the book.” she chuckled. “you’re a nerd you know that, right?”

“of course i know,” you said. “but at least i’m your nerd.”

“oh that was so gross.” hyewon said, fake gagging. “never say that again.”

you started laughing and hyewon soon began laughing. you continued to joke on your walk to the bookstore. in about nineteen minutes you had reached the bookstore. opening the door, you walked to the fiction section and began searching for the book.

“leviathan..” you murmured repeatedly as you searched the shelves.

“found it!” hyewon said, excitedly.

you walked over to the spot hyewon was at and saw the book. “can’t believe you found it before i did.”

“i developed an interest for books because of you.” she said, nudging your arm with her elbow.

“really?” you asked. “you used to hate reading.”

“that book,” she said. “i enjoyed it a lot.”

“i’m glad you did.” you replied. “i have something for you.”

“you do?” hyewon asked as a puzzled look adorned her face.

“i do.” you said, grinning from ear to ear as you grabbed something out of your pocket.

you held a small paper bag and placed it in hyewon’s hand.

“it’s star jasmine seeds,” you said. “like the ones i gave you as a kid.”

“thank you,” she said. “i’ll do my best to care for them.”

“we’ll take care of them.” you said. “remember the meaning of star jasmine?”

“love, right?” hyewon said.

“you're right,” you stated. “so in a sense it’s like the seed of love.”

taking a deep breath and steeping closer to hyewon you said, “it takes two people for love to blossom.” you took hyewon’s hand in yours. “what i’m trying to say is that i want our love to fully blossom and see how beautiful it can be.”

hyewon was silent, which worried you a bit, but quickly that fear turned into contentment as she wrapped her arms around you and held you tight.

“let’s take care of our love.” hyewon mumbled.

“y’know, that little flower has been with us all the time.” you stated. “every time we were together there was that flower.”

“really?” she said. “i never realized.”

“it truly is the flower of love.” you said. “it’s as if or love was that flower.”

“maybe we should take care of our flower love.” hyewon said, smiling softly as she looked at you.

“our flower love.” you repeated. “that’s a nice name for it.”

“i love you.” you simultaneously said.
