Imagine learning 50 years down the line that you're only alive because you happened to get kidnapped by gay vampires in a lifestyle D/s relationship and the dom commanded the sub not to eat you

Louis only ever bottoms with Lestat and Armand only ever doms with Daniel. Follow this blog for more vampire thoughts
#thinking. About vampires#iwtvblogging#Armand's thing with Daniel does involve a certain amount of self-recognition through the other#And like telepathic manipulation of subspace#So it's not straightforward but we love him for it

Keep having to take breaks from IWTV because while it is a phenomenal show and truly the most top-tier television I've seen in recent memory. I am also a big baby who can only tolerate gore in small doses (this is why I don't really watch horror)
#iwtvblogging#reading it is fine it's the visuals that I can't stomach#they give me nightmares lol#I have a very impressionable visual imagination so like it's not as though it Scares me#But the images stick in my mind and then I have bloody violent dreams

Also because Anne Rice's language is verb-dense and favors simple tenses, when translated grammatically accurately into Russian syntax--which tends to be more complex, with more subclauses--her prose sounds like it's written at the sixth-grade level. It reads like a middle-grade novel in Russian. Which it sort of does in English sometimes too but nowhere near to the same extent

Maybe I will attempt an amateur* Russian translation for some passages from IWTV and The Vampire Lestat...need enrichment in my enclosure...
*as in "unpublished and unpolished"; I am a professional translator lol

Desperately wish I could draw because I have such a vivid mental image of Lestat looming over Louis on the altar in New Orleans, eyes alight with an otherworldly glow, blood dripping from his jaw, hand raised in a classical oratorical gesture, with speech text in Gothic font that says AREN'T YOU TIRED OF BEING NICE? DON'T YOU JUST WANT TO GO APESHIT? (This image inspired my previous post about vampire solicitations lol)

One of my favorite things about the IWTV adaptation is that while it acknowledges the overall significance of Catholicism for Anne Rice's worldbuilding and its outsized significance to characters like Louis and Lestat, it expresses the meaning-making matrix of shame and monstrous desire, the Vampire Chronicles Secret Sauce, in ways that don't necessarily reduce to Christianity like they do in the books. With Armand especially, Daniel secondarily, and I'm excited to see how that plays out in later seasons. (Claudia was always one of the most interesting characters because she never considered herself in Christian allegorical/homiletic terms or held herself to Christian moral ideals.)
#iwtvblogging#I think part of addressing Anne Rice's racism necessarily entails addressing this universal Christianity#Universal Catholicism in particular#And the show does it sooo well

Reading IWTV po-russki. The translation is mediocre but serviceable. It's not as though 1976 Anne Rice was renowned for her sparkling prose; her language veers between functional and florid with very little to balance those extremes. Her style doesn't really come into its own until The Vampire Lestat imo
