i remember seeing the 2014 broadway revival of on the town in high school when my theatre program brought us to see it as one of three shows we got to experience on that trip and i was quite literally the only person in my entire cohort who not only enjoyed it but found it particularly striking; my taste was admittedly retro even then but i remember people complaining about how milquetoast it was (i think the word used colloquially then was ofc "basic") but as someone who still finds nyc to be a distinctly magical place and absolutely adores the bernstein score + robbins choreo combo i found it an incredibly moving piece of theatre
#on the town#the critique that beginning with the national anthem was stupid was extremely warranted bc it was stupid but that show is one that i remain#so grateful i got to see with an extremely stacked cast#also like sorry to those sixteen/seventeen year olds that a show from the forties wasn't ''edgy'' but also i do think that the fact that#ivy smith was originated by a japanese american actress and was played by a black ballerina (replacement) in the revival is also genuinely#interesting given the show's origin and politics
