like, i get it. sometimes you make something and it doesn’t turn out how you envisioned. sometimes you finish and all you can see in your work is how your technical skill isn't where you wish it was. sometimes you look too long at once piece and get sick of it. sometimes you’re simply having an off day! it happens, and when it happens, oftentimes you feel like you need to acknowledge it.
maybe you want to complain. maybe you want someone to reassure you that it’s not as bad as you feel like it is. maybe you’re hoping if you say your work is bad first then it’ll hurt less if someone agrees with you. i get it, i really do. the reasons are valid, and you’re allowed to feel that way about your work. but, and i cannot stress this enough: don’t say it on the piece!!
for one, it isn’t going to actually make you feel better. i’m sure you’ve seen talk online about how regular self-deprecation only creates a habit and makes your self esteem worse. captioning your art with how much you hate it absolutely falls under this umbrella, and you’re not doing yourself or your work any favors by finalizing your piece by wrapping it up with self-hatred.
secondly, if you’re captioning your work with stuff like “the pacing is shit in this chapter” or “i hated the way i drew the hands here,” i guarantee you that you’ve drawn attention to your insecurity in every single person who didn’t notice the issue you’ve pointed out.
esp like… i’m not an artist. i don't have a strong technical eye for art. so every single art piece i’ve ever seen in my life captioned “i hate [this detail]” has done nothing but shine a stage light on something i didn’t notice about the piece. but even writing, where i'm significantly more confident in my technical ability? ive definitely read many a piece where i hadnt noticed a problem until the author pointed it out! captions like this can, at their worst, makes me second-guess my good opinion of the piece i’m looking at.
third, posts with captions like this just… feel bad to interact with. if someone tags their piece talking about how much they hate it, i tend to feel bad even liking it, because i don’t want it to show up in their notifications. i don’t want to reblog a post where an artist or author says how much they hate themself or their work because that sentiment isn't something i feel comfortable interacting with or boosting. ive passed over interacting with a lot of really nice art and writing in my life because of this.
fourth, and this is the harshest point on here: a few years back, i saw one of the writers of night vale talk about opening submissions for bands to play a song on the podcast. they got hundreds of submissions, and one of the ways they saved time and narrowed them down was by deleting every single submission that included anything along the lines of “this isn’t good, but—“ without listening to it. bc you know what? if a creator tells me their piece isn’t worth my time, 9 times out of 10, i’ll fuckin believe them. i do not waste a second interacting with any piece if its creator tells me not to.
you don’t have to caption all your work saying it’s the best thing in the world. you don’t have to be proud of it. you don’t even have to like it. but if you want to say “this sucks” then i implore you, and i don’t care if this sounds harsh, to keep your mouth shut. having no caption is better than having one full of self-flagellation.
and it’s not like you can never vent, but there are better places to do it than the caption. talk to a friend, make a separate post, or even just rephrasing your complaints will help! instead of “the dialogue turned out awful,” you can say “this dialogue was difficult to write, but i tried my best.” something like “my dialogue needs work, but this was good practice” is also better! refocusing on the fact you you’re trying your best and constantly improving is far better than pushing yourself down.
and, at risk of sounding like an ass: if you really, truly, absolutely cannot post your work without saying how much you hate it, then why are you even posting it?
have some confidence in yourself. fake it, if you have to. saying something entirely unrelated or saying nothing at all is better than shitting on yourself, both for your own self image and for the people who want to interact with your work
actually since my tags on that last post reminded me--my number one piece of advice for creatives is do not be self-depricating on your work. the absolute worst thing you can do for yourself when posting your art/writing/etc is to caption it with anything along the lines of "i hate how this turned out" or "this piece sucks."

Blog Assignment 2
Part 1. Questions
Describe 3 challenges and 3 opportunities that you see in the slow movement. Do you want to slow some aspect(s) of your life? If so, what concrete steps can you take to achieve this?
Well in the podcast called “A Slow Phone” the two speakers went over how being a modern human is hard work. They went over in detail how everyone always trying to accomplish so many things at once, which isn’t how humans should be functioning. One thing the guest, Petter Nebby, talked about was how people are always on their smart phones trying to create an image for themselves either through social media or even how they will text other individuals. They talked about how people shouldn’t have to create these images for themselves because it causes constant stress and anxiety. Because of this issue Petter created a phone which limits what a typical smart phone can do but with an emphasis on the sound being produced from the phone. The podcast went into detail about how the art of conversation is being lost because of all the texting, so they want to limit the texting people do nowadays and allow people to be more open through actually talking with another human being. This allows people to actually be in the moment and to be unfiltered and honest with the other induvial, like communication is supposed to be done between other people. Therefor with an emphasis on the speaker on the phone it will actually sound like you’re right there with the person you are talking to.  Personally I agree with all of this and think it is a step in the right direction. Even if I’m texting one of my closest friends, I still have to double or even triple check what I’m telling them so I do not look like an idiot. There’s always constant stress in ensuring I’m not a bumbling idiot to whomever I’m speaking to.  So if I were to actually call people instead of texting them I ca totally see how this would strengthen my relationships with some people and to become more happy with myself being open and vulnerable.
They also touched upon how constantly socializing and being in a social medium like Instagram or Facebook is almost like a drug. The analogy they used was how whenever you had food to eat in the old days, you would gorge yourself because you never knew when you would get another surplus of food, so all the fat would hold you over. So nowadays  that instinct would lead to obesity, which they compared being glued to your phone with social interactions. Today you have a constant stream of relations in all different directions, and being a social species we fundamentally enjoy it, so we gorge on our phones to keep the feeling going. One thing that stuck with me when they said this was that the practice of stacking phones was becoming more of a common thing. Whenever you’re with someone or a group of people out for lunch or a café, you would pile everyone’s phones together to ensure that everyone was interacting with the people with them. I always thought this was a joke and just a ploy to get people to know one another at a party, but after hearing these men talk about how important it is to actually interact with those actually in front of you, I believe I’m going to actually implement this in almost all my get-togethers now.
And lastly the fact that at the end of the podcast the men were able to talk about time seemed to wrap up the whole podcast. They brought in a non-traditional clock that didn’t have a minute or second’s hand, meaning you couldn’t see the see the minute’s time slowly moving along throughout your day. I think this is a great little invention because it emphasises the whole aspect that we shouldn’t be forcing ourselves to countdown the minutes we have every single day.  Having to watch our time constantly only adds to the everyday stress and anxiety, so being able to even distance yourself from worrying about time seems like something that more people should do. So being able to actually enjoy our days, especially with summer vacation, I don’t see why I should have to be so worried with how I’m spending my time. As long as I’m enjoying myself and getting whatever I need to get done, I don’t see why I should work myself up over something so miniscule as time. (http://www.carlhonore.com/unlock-slow/podcasts/)
Describe your survey answers and comments in a brief paragraph. You should cover each of the following questions:
i.)What activity did you participate in?
ii.)What effect did participating in the activity have on you?
iii.)What would have made the experience better?
iv.)What other outdoor winter activities would you be interested in participating in?
Instead of participating in the Jack Frost challenge, I was able to go to my cabin for the weekend. It’s just at Nutimik Lake within the Whiteshell provincial park, and there was a lot of snowfall there this year. So I had the luxury of enjoying a lot of snow filled walks in my full winter get up, ugly snow pants included. I went around with my grandparents seeing old family friends and enjoying all of winter scenery. And then one day brother and I went all the way to Blueberry Hill, a local hiking path that leads to a trail that’s full of blueberries in the summer. Eventually I got too cold and decided to head back to the cabin to enjoy our wood burning fireplace there. I was really worn out after my day outside and just wanted to sleep, but I don’t regret it at all because I had so much fun. The weather was  great but if the wind was too much for me since I’m more prone to get frostbite, but it the best winter day I’ve had in a while. I always enjoyed cross-country and downhill skiing, but I haven’t had the time to do either of those this winter. Even shovelling the driveway when is snows is sometimes  super nice whenever life is getting too stressful.
a.     Investigate the chemicals in your personal care products. Use the product guide from the Environmental Working Group http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ to see how your products are rated for carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, etc. (   /3)
My products all seem to be scoring about a five on the scale expect for one being a three, meaning they’re all moderately hazardous. But one thing I did notice was that my toothpaste, which is Sensodyne, the only three, shared a common ingredient with my deodorant, which is Mitchum, called PEG-8. PEG-8 has the chemicals Ethylene Oxide and 1,4 Dioxane (http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ingredient/704655/PEG-8/#.WscuJOjwY2w) which are known human carcinogens which both lead to cancer and organ failures. So through brushing my teeth and putting chemicals on one of the sweatiest parts of my body, I’m putting myself at risk of not only a tumor but also with the possibility of total organ shut down. And one of the more interesting things I found out was that the shampoo I use being Head and Shoulders is one of the many brands my boyfriend try’s to avoid. He’s allergic to some products because they will give him a rash and my shampoo is one of them. The chemical ingredients he told me that cause the most issues is Methylsothrazolinare, which is one of the more hazardous ingredients in the shampoo. Overall, finding out that the products I use to just smell and look clean might not even be worth it with all of the dangerous ingredients found in them.
 b.     Do an analysis of your purchases for one week.  Record all products, food, beverages and services purchased over this period.  Create screening criteria to categorize all items as “Good”, “Bad” or “Ugly”.  The criteria is up to you, but must be justified. You may wish to consider factors such as: environmental impact, social impact, local or foreign, corporate or small business.  Add up the dollar values spent in each category and reflect on where you would like to make changes – if any. (   /3)
Tumblr media
So of the week of March 19-25 my total spending was $93.02 on food alone, and then 15.05 on gas. That’s a grand total of $108.07 spent in one week. So the only costs I would put into the category of being “necessary” is the $15.05 of gas. I do not have my own car, so I was using my mom’s for the night and whenever I use it I need to put some gas into the car kind of like a payment. I do feel bad about driving because of all the emissions, but its winter in Winnipeg and I’m not too fond on freezing to death. The majority of my payments would fit into the “due to laziness” category, which is all the food I bought at university during the week, which is a total of $47.75. Lastly the “date money” category is $45.27 which is the popcorn and the dessert.
The “due to laziness” is all food that I bought from University which is $47.75 in total and as the name suggests it  all could’ve been avoided being spent.  My household has more than enough food for me to eat either before I leave for school or for me to package up for a lunch. So even though I might be using my money to help the local food services at the University, I’m also contributing to a greater food waste when the food spoils at my house from going bad. If I were to stop trying to get the easy way out by buying it all at school, I would not only ensure that less money is being spent , but I would also feel better about myself fin the long run by feeling more accomplished every day by making my own meals.
The “date money” of category is when my boyfriend and I went out for, you guessed it, date night. He ended up buying the tickets for the movie Love, Simon (I recommend seeing it by the way. I cried like 5 times) and I bought the popcorn and drinks. And then the next day we went to Snow and Moon, which is a relatively new café in Winnipeg that has extravagant shaved milk desserts. It’s extremely good and the owners are local so being able to enjoy a night out and supporting a local business was perfect. So the overall the money spent in this category was more of a social aspect but I really have no shame in spending any of it.

  c.     Investigate the options and end fate of your household’s e-waste. Discuss where and how you will dispose of this waste and your future electronics purchase plans in relation to the waste they will one day become. (   /2)
My brother enjoys spending his time fiddling around with computers so he’s amassed quite a collection of computer parts over the years from friends and family members. When he cleaned out his room not even a couple of weeks ago he had a pile of computer monitors, hard drives and wires just at the entrance of his room. He told me he was just going to throw them all out into the trash when he was done. I got mad and told him he couldn’t do that and proceeded to collect it all up and I put it in a bag for him to take to one of the local recycle locations. I looked it up online at https://www.recyclemyelectronics.ca/mb/where-can-i-recycle/ and there was one relatively close to our home. Unfortunately the bag is still at our house due to the fact that I don’t have a car and that my brother is incredibly lazy, but I was surprised at how much of it we actually hold onto. We still have all of our old phones, printers and a couple TVs in our house. My mother has always been cautious of throwing out e-waste because she used to work in an office and she said that the majority of the parts can be reused and recycled. So I guess the cautious behavior rubbed off on my brother and me but I had never given it all much thought, let alone realized that on the plants was so close to our house.
Zoos
a.       What role, if any, should zoos play in conservation / education?
Well I think that the ideas of zoos are important however how they are executed is extremely lacking.  For instance, I believe that the fact that zoos allow the general public to see animals and learn some tid-bits of information about them will only promote a public understanding about the animal. Being able to visually see something brings more of a connection to ones self instead of just seeing pictures in a book or on the internet. However, we are dealing with living beings here and not just pieces of art you can hang on the wall. Anything that is alive needs the proper conditions to live and prosper. Zoos do not allow animals to prosper in enclosed cages just for viewing purposes
  b.      Is it ethical to keep animals in zoos? If so, what size / type of animal or zoo?
Well by definitions zoos are “a facility with usually indoor and outdoor settings where living, typically wild animals are kept especially for public exhibition” ( https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/zoo) , so I would say from that definition alone that zoos are not ethical when it comes to keeping animals. Wild animals are not supposed to be kept in a facility where they have no free reign, let alone just be there for the public viewing purposes. If zoos were to really be ethical then they would have to allow the free reign of said wild animals while maintaining the public viewing aspect for the public. The only thing that comes to mind is maybe a viewing balcony that allows for 360 viewing of the habitat for the animal but even then the encampment would have to be huge for the animal to have its own territory. Which I don’t think is possible within todays cities.
 c.       Do you enjoy visiting zoos?
I went to the Winnipeg zoo last summer with my boyfriend thinking it would be a nice way to spend a day off. However, I just remember the whole trip being upset the whole entire day for how the zoo was being run. The enclosures were too small for the animals being in them let alone the enclosures didn’t even have running water for them.  The animals were just pacing back and forth and the new exhibit about Churchill wasn’t even anything special. I have only ever been to the Winnipeg zoo, so far I have yet to be impressed.
 Food
Consider your food system:
a.     What do you like about it?
I live in a fairly good neighborhood with some relatively close options when it comes to grocery stores. Sobeys, Safeway, Walmart to name a few, always have options when it comes to fruit and vegetables that normally wouldn’t have been available to someone in Canada during our winter months. So the fact that I can get reliable foods year round makes me happy as well as getting meat without having to deal with the animal myself. We grow little vegetables in our own backyard but its only a summer thing, but it still provides options when it comes to flavor.
b.     What do you dislike about it?
The food system we have is all because we live in a first world country, so there are a vast majority of people that are not able to enjoy such a luxury which really does makes me sad.  The fact that there is always food in stock proves that the food is being mass produced on a large scale. From the movie we watched in class “Fresh” we saw firsthand how the large scale companies will mass produce livestock. Seeing as how the quantity of food is never really an issue at these stores it makes me believe that it’s the same situation when it comes to what we watched in the movie. Also considering the fact we are receiving tropical foods in the middle of winter leads me to believe that the cost of energy to get them to my stores is incredible high. Having to transport Dole , the fruit company, goods from Costa Rica to the United States docks produces 43.92 kilograms of CO2 alone ( https://www.treehugger.com/green-food/ask-pablo-whats-the-impact-of-imported-tropical-fruit.html ).  So not only is a long and difficult to get fruit to my doorstep but it is also damaging to the environment as well. I should only be buying local product that support local businesses but that will  also help with lowering the total carbon emissions done to get my food, but I also local foods taste better. Buying local makes more sense when it comes to getting the food you want and need.
Consider taste, nutrition, cost, equity, and environmental issues
 Oceans
a.     What are your primary concerns about the oceans?
Well ever since I was a child my favorite animals are dolphins and whales, so I studied and read all about them because I found it so interesting. So even being a child I was well aware of the risks my favorite animals shad to face from, being fished up in nets, destruction of the local environment or even eating human trash. Even to this day I don’t want to see whales or dolphins be harmed, let alone from human reasoning. My primary concern then is ensuring that whales and dolphins are not impacted by human actions at all. Since that is such a broad concern for the animals, it also cover a lot of other issues we are currently facing with our oceans. Since all living beings need a functioning ecosystem to survive and prosper, we should insure that human interactions are kept to a minimum since we have a track record of fucking things up. Whether that means overfishing and ruining the whole ecosystem, throwing trash and chemical waste into ocean or even stopping the practice of whaling all together.
Tumblr media
http://www.onegreenplanet.org/news/whale-filled-with-plastic-trash/
  b.     What, if anything, do you plan to do about it?
The oceans are 70% of earth’s surface (https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/oceanwater.html) so whether it’s through the hydraulic cycle bringing toxins or rivers carrying trash to the oceans, I can make a difference by minimizing my carbon footprint even in the middle of the prairies to ensure I am minimizing my effect. I can easily make sure that I do not throw trash on the ground but in proper disposable bins so it doesn’t eventually get taken up into a river. I can also stop supporting fishing businesses that allow dolphins to be caught by accident (by-catch) or companies who release their toxic byproducts into the oceans.
