i think its like super interesting to look at dick and jason’s relationship because you know what? neither of them could ever win.

When bruce took jason in, he was looking for another dick, and he kinda found one. Jason was iike dick on steroids, bolder, more reckless, more confident, and just kinda everything that dick embodied as robin, but a little more. and the more he was extra, the more bruce rewarded him. He took one look at that disaster of a kid jacking his tires and he saw what dick could have become if he was left in the system, and he also saw an impressionable kid that he could mould the way he couldnt with dick. he was younger when he took him in, and passed the authority over to alfred. this was his do-over.

and honestly? thats kinda what happened. he adopted jason off the bat, treated him like a son, encouraged jason to call him dad in a way he never did with dick. and that was all dick wanted, a family. and dick resented both bruce and jason for that. he was the replacement, he felt that he was never good enough for bruce’s affection. since he was so willing to give it to jason.

And as time went on, dick went to exorbitant lengths to be the perfect son. he stuck around, was consistent and dependable, was bruce’s number one go to fix-it kid. he even took on the mantle of batman and trained bruce’s son. and jason hated him for that.

Jason saw him as a goodie two-shoes, a tryhard, someone without a backbone. and that was a complex that he single handedly forged. by being bruce’s first official son, he set up the dynamic going forward. and honestly there was no way for any of this to go right. bruce was so ham-handed in everything he did with these two kids, that the only POSSIBLE result was mutual resentment.

dick fans put the blame on jasons killing. jason fans put the blame on dick’s distance. but it couldnt go any other way. it was doomed from the start. and i find that really sad, since theyre such interesting characters who COULD have a strong bond, forged through adversity and mutual respect, if only dc would let them
