RINGSIDE WRESTLING : JANUARY 1997
Like a Hurricane! NWO destroys everything in its path!
By George Napolitano
[Kevin Nash and Scott Hall have done nothing but crush people and things since they arrived in the WCW territory]
The New World Order–led by “Hollywood” Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall–has completely turned wrestling upside down. When Scott Hall first invaded WCW, he promised that a few friends would soon be joining him and that they would take over WCW. No one ever imagined that Hulk Hogan would join that dastardly group and when he did, Hogan shocked everyone. After turning his back on his fans and friends, Hogan declared that there was a “New world order” in professional wrestling.  With this the nWo came into existence.
[A surprising number of fans have decided that the New World Order is where it’s at.]
Following the formation of this new alliance, Hogan & Co. promised that more enlistees would soon come to board and, true to their word, several new members have joined the nWo alliance. After Hall, Nash and Hogan, Ted DiBiase, aptly named “Billionaire Ted”, joined the group. Although it has been hinted that Billionaire Ted was the man directly responsible for putting the financing together to front the nWo, DiBiase didn’t make his presence known until after Hogan, Hall and Nash had put the wheels in motion.
With four members in the organization, the nWo pulled off a big coup when they convinced the Giant to become part of the group. Promising the Giant riches beyond his wildest dreams, it didn’t take long to convince him that his future lie with the nWo. The Giant’s coming out party came at the expense of the Macho Man. When the Giant first appeared in the ring everyone figured that he was going to help WCW fight off the nWo. But that scenario never played out as the Giant pummeled the Macho Man and then joined the Outsiders in destroying the WCW nitro set. Immediately it became apparent to all that WCW was fighting a losing battle.
[Hall gives an exclusive interview to Ringside wrestling editor George Napolitano.]
The nWO’s next mission was to drive a wedge between the WCW alliance. They did this by ringing up a tape of Sting’s voice and making it seem that he had abandoned WCW and joined the New World Order. When Lex Luger heard what he thought was Sting talking to the nWo members, he immediately left the arena and went outside to see for himself what was going on. As Luger approached the nWo limousine, he was viciously attacked by “Sting”. Actually we later learned it wasn’t Sting at all who had attacked Luger but someone who was dressed up to look like Sting.
[Hall ponds Luger against the ropes. Nash Pummels Sting. Suspicious referee Nick Patrick declares the NWO victors after DQing the WCW boys for minor infraction. Hall tries to get Luger to say “Uncle.”]
Actually when Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and the remaining members of WCW they figured that Sting had been bought off by the nWo. At the “War Games” we finally learned for sure that it wasn’t Sting who had attacked Luger but an imposter! But by the time the truth was learned, Sting had been trashed by everyone for “betraying” WCW. Needless to say, Sting was deeply hurt by these accusations. Never theless, the real Sting was the fourth man into the cage at the War Games on WCW’s side. After entering the cage, Sting went ballistic! After entering the cage, Sting went ballistic! He attacked Hogan, Hall, Nash and finally the imposter. But after controlling the action for several minutes, Sting walked out of the cage leaving Flair, Anderson and Luger to fight the four Outsiders by themselves. Meanwhile, with help from the fake Sting, the New World Order defeated WCW members Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and Lex Luger submitted to the fake Sting’s Scorpion Death lock. By defeating the WCW wrestlers the nWO also won the right to have their own television show on either TNT or TBS.  This was a prematch stipulation that was put into the contract by “Billionaire” Ted DiBiase and now WCW has to live up to the terms of the agreement. With this we will be seeing the nWo on its own in the very near future.
On Monday Nitro the day after the War Games, Sting defended his actions. During his tirade Sting declared that he was a “Free Agent” and he also said that he would join the highest bidder! Sting ended his interview by telling everyone “to stick it!” for not trusting him. With this revelation Sting made it known that he would listen to offers from the nWo.
[The Outsiders need increased security wherever they go.]
But that is not all.
On September 16, on Nitro, the man formally known as the 1-2-3 Kid made an appearance. It was later revealed that he too would be joining the nWo and that he would be known as Six. I guess he got his name by adding up the digits in his WWF name. I’m sure that he must have had some help fighting out that 1+2+3=Six, but as long as he can remember how to wrestle he will be a welcomed addition to the nWo.
Actually, if you want to count the nWo members, Six should really be Seven, unless the bogus Sting doesn’t count. For those keeping score Scott Hall should be one; Kevin Nash, two; Holywood Hogan, three; “Billionaire” Ted DiBiase, four; the Giant, fice and the bogus Sting, six. Either the nWo doesn’t know its math, or they’re giving the bogus Sting a hint that he;’s not really welcomed in their elite alliance.
[Hall and Nash doubleteam Luger! Nash slams Luger to the canvas.]
The nWo really has everyone talking. Not since the wrestling boon in the mid-1980s has there been as much anticipation and excitement as there is today. Right now everyone can’t wait for Monday night to see what new surprise the nWo will unveil on Nitro.
You can say what you want about the nWo, but no one can deny the tremendous impact that they have made on the American wrestling scene.
