Something Stupid (V)

Pairing: Roger Taylor x OC (Lily Hathaway)

Summary: He was not the type to pine or whatever you wanted to call it. It usually was the opposite, they pined for him, they wanted to be with him, which is probably why he was way out of his element with her.

Author’s Note: I am so sorry how long this took. I had a really bad case of writer's block but it seems that it's gone now! This is the longest chapter I’ve written so far! Which is fantastic but I’m back in school, so updates are going to be slow but I will try my best to have a set schedule. If you see errors, sorry, but I am brain is fried and I just wanted to post it before I decided to delete it and start all over.

Also, would anyone would be interested in me creating a playlist for this story? I already have some songs in mind. Let me know what you think!

Surprisingly, Roger and John did end up going to a bar the day John was supposedly had to have dinner with Lily and her American. Roger felt a little odd being there with John, and it wasn’t because it was just them two, but because of the giant elephant in the room: John’s refusal to talk about Lily.

Every time Roger tried to approach the topic of her or the American, John would dodge his question and push the conversation to another topic. Roger wasn’t typically nosy (unlike a certain redhead), but seeing John lie to his beloved Lily, definitely caught his attention. There was something missing in the equation and maybe it was because he was still irritated by Lily, but Roger really wanted to know what was going on between John and the happy couple.

“Next week, it’s going to be Lily’s birthday,” John interrupted him when Roger mentioned Mary and Lily had been criticizing his hair a few days prior.

“What?” Roger coughed and put down his beer.

“We’re going to throw her a surprise party the day of her birthday, this Friday,” John continued. “It's going to be at her mother's house.”

“Alright,” Roger said slowly. “We don’t have practice that day if that’s what you’re worried about.”

John looked at him in exasperation. “Roger, I’m telling you so you can arrive before Lily. The guys are going to the party, just like you.”

“Why would I go?” he asked stupidly.

“Oh, god,” John said under his breath, looking incredibly annoyed. He looked at Roger and said slowly, “Because I'm inviting you. Because Lily happens to like you.”

“Lily likes me?” he asked in disbelief. Yes, she was nice to him when she saw him and got him a nice gift for Christmas, but he was sure she only tolerated him for John sake, but like him? He doubted.

“Yes, for some reason she really likes you.”

“How are you sure about that?

“Because she's told me herself,” he said impatiently. “So, because of that fact, you have to go to her birthday party. You would hurt her feelings if you didn’t go.”

Roger was still stuck in the fact that somehow, through all the pettiness and childishness, Lily liked him, even if it was just as a person.

“Why would Lily like me?”

“I'd like to think because, in a way, you and Lily are similar.”

“In what? That we're both mammals?”

“Don’t be dense,” John said, looking exasperated. Roger raised one of his hands in surrender. “You're still going to the party.”

“Alright,” Roger sighed heavily. Looks like he had plans for next Friday. “What time do you want me to be there?”

“Early, I don’t have the exact time yet, but I will let you know soon,” John said, getting up from his seat. “Be right back.”

Roger nodded his attention now on his empty bottle. He needed a refill and tried to call the attention of the bartender. John paused and turned back to Roger, and said, “It's a small party, so don’t bring a date.”

“Alright.”

“You need to come early, it's a surprise party.”

“Alright.”

“Oh, and you'll have to buy her a gift.”

“I said, alright,” Roger said in annoyance.

“Do not get her a scarf,” John warned him as he started walking away from him.

“Oh come on, we both know she loves that scarf,” Roger called after him, remembering seeing her multiple time wear the yellow scarf he gave her in Christmas. John threw him a look, before disappearing in the crowd. “Fuck,” he hissed and when he finally got his beer, took a long gulp. What the fuck was he supposed to get Lily?

Despite almost knowing her almost over a year, he did not know Lily that well. What he did know was that she was four years younger than him, had known John her entire life, had horrible taste in men (seeing that she was dating an American out of every nationality), was always cold, was deathly allergic to cats (which didn’t stop her from hugging Freddie’s cats) and was super nosy.

What kind of gift could he get her from that information?

“A new boyfriend,” he muttered sarcastically but laughed in disbelief, crossing that idea off. That would not go well with either Lily or John or Mary or the American. Christ, how many people loved that girl? He sighed heavily, realizing that he was going to put a lot of effort on a girl that he wasn't even going to sleep with.

After mulling about it at night (meaning he got drunk and found a pretty girl to take home) Roger decided it wouldn’t hurt to ask Brian for advice. He had gotten Lily as secret Santa, and Lily had seemed pretty happy with the gift she received.

“What are you going to give Lily?” Roger asked Brian when he saw him a day later.

“For her birthday?”

“Yes, what else would I be talking about?” Roger asked impatiently.

“I got her a sweater,” Brian said simply.

“A sweater?” Roger frowned, instantly regretting asking Brian. That was a stupid gift, more than books.

“Mary was the one that told me of a sweater that Lily had been eying,” he defended himself, seeing the expression on Rogers' face.

Roger attitude shifted at that new information. “Mary helped you?”

“Yeah, I had no idea what to get her, just like you, it seems and she was nice enough to help me.”

“Really?” Roger hummed, leaving Brian alone and quickly changed his tactics, but unfortunately, asking Mary proved no help at all when he went to visit her afterward while she was working.

“You men are unbelievable,” she said as Roger trailed after her around the store. “I had to help Freddie, Brian and now you? No, I am done. You need to figure it out on your own.”

“What? Come on,” Roger groaned. “Just give me something. I don’t want to give her a shit gift and have Deacy on my back.”

“You literally cannot think of one thing that Lily might like?”

“No,” he said. “Come on, Mary. Don't you love Lily? I don't think you do because it seems that you want me to give her a shit gift and ruin her birthday.”

“Don't be dramatic, Roger.”

“I'm not being dramatic. I am being realistic, I'm going to be the reason Lily birthday is ruin and it's going to be your fault I ruined it.”

“Nice try, Roger, but no,” Mary said firmly. “You’re not a child. You can think of something to get Lily. It doesn’t have to be something grand. It can be something small but meaningful.”

Then she proceeded to kick him out of the store when he made it clear that he wasn’t going to purchase anything from there. He glared at Mary as she pushed him out the door. Great, not only had he wasted his time, he still didn't have a clue what to give Lily.

Roger needed to get something for her, it was the least he could for the nice present she gave him in Christmas. He had to come up with something in those few days before the party.

No matter how much he dreaded the day to come, it was finally the day of Lily’s party and Roger still had nothing for her. He was tempted to skip the party but wasn’t that stupid to go through it. He could already imagine the shit he would get from John and Mary, and even the disappointed look from Lily.

As he did the walk of shame to the location of the party, across the street, a flower vendor was yelling, waving flower bouquets in the air. Roger stopped walking and furrowed his brows, the wheels inside his brain steering. Lily seemed the type of girl to like flowers, for God sake her name was after a flower. Glancing both ways, he crossed the street and bought yellow roses that had a mixture of small flowers.

It wasn't much but it was something and at that moment it was all that mattered for Roger as he rushed off. When he arrived at Lily’s mother's house, he was dismayed to realize that he had shown up late. Lily was already there as she was the first person he saw when he opened the door.

“Roger, you made it,” she greeted him, giving him a wide smile and going over to him. He smiled sheepishly as he hugged her awkwardly, still holding onto the bouquet.

“Happy birthday, Hathaway. I am so sorry for coming late.”

“Thank you and it’s alright. You’re here, that is all that matters,” she said and her eyes went to his hand. Her eyes widened, an expression he couldn't identify crossing her face. “Are those for me?”

“Oh, yes, this is yours,” he said and handed it to her hastily. She stared at the flowers for second before slowly taking them from him. He felt a little unnerved of her calm demeanor. She hated them, he could already tell. “I’m sorry about the flowers. I didn’t really know what to get you and…” he trailed off, not sure what to say.

“What? No,” she said, looking at him in shock. “I love them.”

“Are you sure? I can get...”

“Roger, shut up,” she said with a firmness that made him do as he was told. “I. Love. Them. You just made my day.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really,” she said and gave him a genuine smile.

It was times like these that made Roger glad at what a happy camper Lily could be. She just helped him dodge a bullet from John. He found himself smiling back at Lily.

“I'm glad you don't hate them,” he said. Mary appeared out of nowhere, getting the attention of Lily.

“Come on, Rosemary found the camera,” she told her and when she saw Roger standing there, her eyes narrowed dangerously. “I will get to you later.”

“Oh, leave him alone, Mary,” Lily chastised her. “He's here and that's all that matters. Look, what he got me.” She waved the flowers in Mary's face. “They're so beautiful, aren't they?”

“Yes, they are,” Mary agreed reluctantly, grabbing Lily’s free arm. “Come on, let's go.”

“Thank you for the flowers. I love them,” Lily called out as she was being dragged and pointed to a doorway. “The boys are in the living room.”

Nodding his appreciation, Roger made his way to the living room, which wasn't hard. The house was incredibly small and from the looks of it, there were about twenty guests at the party. He heard the guys before he saw them.

“Over here, darling,” Freddie called his name, and by his side were Brian and John.

“I know, I know,” Roger said, already expecting John’s wrath, as he reached them. “I’m sorry about being late, but Lily didn’t care. She said I was happy I made it.”

“I am honestly not surprised you came late,” John admitted. “Besides, it's Lily’s birthday. I’ll have Brian punch you tomorrow.”

Brain laughed and Roger even found himself smiling at that.

“Alright, noted,” he said and glanced around the living room. “Is there anything to drink?”

“Oh, right there,” Freddie pointed out to a small table that was connected to kitchen.

“Great,” Roger said, needing something strong to get him in the mood for a party. For the majority of the party, Roger stayed with the guys. He was introduced to Lily’s mother and younger sister at one point, and he was surprised that neither of them was redheads like the birthday girl. Roger couldn’t find Lily’s father and that was when John quietly told him that Lily’s father had passed away two years ago.

Roger was also introduced to many of Lily’s friends, many which happened to be girls. He usually was all over the pretty girls, but not that day. It wasn't because he was crammed with strangers in a small place, he was more than used to that, but something about them being friends with Lily and him flirting with them didn’t sit right with him. So, Roger just drank and talked to Brian or Freddie. John and Mary would come and go, both more comfortable being there than the rest.

“Why are you here?” Roger asked Freddie at one point, confused why Freddie was with them, instead of being the life of the party that he usually was.

“Mary warned me not to make this about me. This is Lily’s day and I will respect that,” Freddie said, shrugging. Roger looked at him doubtfully, knowing that was not enough to keep Freddie in check.

“But Lily did ask me to sing for her and I will respect the birthday girls wishes. It is going to be spectacular.”

There it is, Roger thought, shaking his head in amusement. And just as Freddie promised, Lily approached them an hour later and grabbed Freddie's hand.

“Come on,” she told him loudly, her face flushed. Roger was pretty sure she was a little tipsy. “It's time for you to turn this into a real party.”

“I thought you would never ask, darling,” Freddie grinned at her and allowed her to drag him away from the guys. Lily stopped in front of Mary and talked to them, her hands moving around wildly and almost tripped on the spot.

Yep, she was definitely more than tipsy.

“Is Freddie going to sing?” Brian asked in confusion when nothing was happening after a few minutes.

“After the cake,” John said, appearing on Roger’s left side. He was carrying a bottle for some reason and offered them a refill which they accepted it.

“Not that we're judging, God, knows we've done that many times, but any particular reason for that?” Brian asked, pointing at the bottle.

“It's a party, people drink,” John said simply.

“But do you think it's a good idea to drink an entire bottle of whiskey in your best friends birthday?”

“Yes,” John said shortly and took a long swing from the bottle. Brain looked like he was about to say something, but Roger stepped in.

“When is cake time?” Roger asked and his question was answered at that moment.

“Cake time,” Lily’s mother announced excitedly, which made Roger smile. Well, that explained where Lily got her perky personality. John noticed Rogers expression and nodded knowingly.

“Lily is a lot like her mother. Romantic, happy go lucky, super enthusiastic, whatever you want to call it. It's infectious.”

“Annoying more like it,” Roger muttered, taking a drink, but grinned when Lily practically ripped off the arm of her boyfriend as she dragged him to the table where the cake was. Lily’s mother brought the cake and placed it in front of Lily. Freddie then proceeded to belt out the happy birthday song, and a few brave people joined him.

“Oh, thank God,” John said out of nowhere making Roger and Brian look at him strangely. For some reason, John looked relieved.

“What are you talking about?” Roger asked, looking away from Lily.

“I thought Matt hadn’t gotten Lily flowers,” he explained, nodding to the flowers Roger had given to Lily, which had been placed on the table where the cake was.

“Actually...” Roger started saying but was cut off by Brian, like always.

“Why does it matter? They're just flowers.”

“You try telling that to Lily. She's always demanded to get flowers on her birthday. I would have bought her flowers, I usually am the one, but she has Matt and I felt like it wasn't appropriate for me to give them to her.” John shrugged, looking slightly awkward. “But... I am super glad that Matt held up his deal of the bargain. Flowers make Lily a happy girl.”

“Are you serious?” Roger asked, glancing at the flowers and then at Lily. He had to bite a smug grin at how he did a better job giving Lily a gift than her boyfriend because he sure as hell didn't get her those flowers.

“She's a little insane about it, I think its a name thing. One time she didn't get one and threw such a fit. Sure, she was twelve but I am glad that she got the one thing that always makes her happy.”

“Looks like Matt is going to have a good night tonight,” Brian said, giving John a suggestive.

“Ah, stop it,” John grimaced. “Lily does not have sex. She plays chess with Matt at night.”

“Wow, it looks like Lily and I have so much in common,” Roger teased, laughing along Brian. “We should get together one night and play chess.”

John bumped into Roger hard, making him spill some of his drink into his shirt. “Fuck, John,” he groaned, clumsily wiping himself.

They had been distracted talking that they hadn't realized everyone around them had stopped singing. Roger looked over in time to see Matt leaning in to whisper something to Lily. She looked at him curiously as he disappeared into the kitchen. Seconds later, he came back, holding a huge bouquet of flowers that made Rogers look like a sad weed.

“What?” Roger said in disbelief and wasn't the only one.

“Wait, what?” John said, frowning in confusion, looking at the other bouquet.

“Oh, my goodness,” Lily said, grinning at Matt. “You got me flowers?”

He laughed at her reaction and said, “Did you really think I wouldn’t get you flowers, Lils? What kind of boyfriend I would be?”

She laughed and pulled him into a hard kiss, the flowers almost being crushed by their bodies. Mary was quick to go in between them and pull the flowers from harm's way. When they stopped kissing, Lily hugged him and mouthed something to Mary who nodded knowingly.

“If those are Matt's flowers, then who gave Lily those flowers?” John asked them as if they had the answer.

“Maybe a friend of hers,” suggested Brian, not seeing the big deal.

“Does she even like petunias?” Roger asked snidely.

“I don’t think so,” John said, glancing at Roger, who was staring at Matt’s flowers with a look of contempt. For some reason, Roger felt slightly irritated that Lily had a more positive reaction at Matt's flower than his. Which was really stupid if he thought about it, he gave her flowers as a last resort. He wasn’t trying to impress her, he just didn’t want to look like a jerk for showing up empty-handed.

They were just stupid flowers. He shouldn’t be annoyed whether Lily had liked them more than her Americans. But it did bother him, and he didn’t know why.

“I’m going to get a drink,” he muttered and went back to the kitchen, not waiting for either of the guys to respond. He was surprised that there was a girl in the kitchen, and he cleared his throat making his presence known. The girl jumped in surprise, almost dropping the glass that she had in her hand.

“Oh, shit,” she gasped. “You scared me.”

“Sorry about that,” he apologized and went to the counter, picking up the first bottle he could find, refilling his glass. He could see in the corner of his eye the girl checking him out.

“I’m Olivia, Lily’s friend,” she introduced herself when he turned to face her.

“Roger,” he said, and didn’t bother to state his relationship with Lily, because honestly, he was not quite sure what they were. Friends didn’t sound quite right, but neither did acquaintances. He was glad that Lily’s friend didn’t seem to care how he knew Lily because she made it clear that she knew him.

“You’re Roger Taylor, the drummer from Smile, right?”

“We’re Queen now actually, but yes, I’m Roger Taylor, the one and only,” he said, smiling pleasantly. He glanced over his shoulder as if someone might appear from behind him and yell at him for talking to Lily’s friend. When no one appeared, he looked back at her and asked, “Have you seen us play?”

“Lily dragged me to one of your shows,” she said, getting closer to him. “You guys are really good. Lily said so, but it's not the same hearing it from someone than actually being there and listening in person.”

“Really? Is that all Lily said about us? We’re good?”

“Maybe,” Olivia said, giving him a flirtatious smile. “But one thing for sure she didn’t tell me was how attractive the drummer was.”

Rogers smile then became wider. Suddenly Lily and the stupid flowers meant nothing to him. And if someone called him out at his sudden change of attitude towards Lily’s friends, he would ignore them. It was a goddamn party and if he chooses to flirt with one of Lily’s friend just because he could so be it.

Q&A With Aifrit

Overview.

We were given an opportunity to sit down and get a better understanding of who Aifrit is and after having a little fun going over her work we got to asking her a few questions.

The following is a record of the interview held by Zieg, Hail, Astro, and Luie with author Aifrit.

Q: So, we just recently started covering your fanfiction titled “Farronheit” and we where interested in knowing when exactly did you start writing “Farroncest” and why?

A: 2012. I distinctly remember sitting inside a classroom building in my softmore year of college waiting for my next class and was like “fuck I wanna write some Farroncest... but should I even do that? that lowkey sounds kinda immoral ew” because I found the FFXIII Kink Meme and there were some quality kink prompts on there and a handful of Farroncest ones. I remember sometime before even this I read some Farroncest fic about Lightning ravaging Serah in a bathroom during dinner with Snow and I was like “YOOOO THIS IS WHY PEOPLE WRITE THIS SHIP??” I felt so conflicted because I initially was like “why the FUCK would anyone write this ship???”

So then that day in that classroom building I just decided to write it and do it. And thus Bonding was born. Bonding is my first Farroncest fic ever and also my first smut fic ever. Looking back at it now, it’s really awkward to read and I cringe when I see it but I guess we gotta start somewhere huh?

Q: Do you write professionally or just as a hobby?

A: I don’t know if I could ever write professionally. I write too slowly tbh. It takes me ages just to write a couple thousand words if I’m not super in the mood. I do web development professionally, as well as a hobby, but as far as other hobbies? I love art but I never pursued it as much as I did writing because I always saw how bad my art was but it was hard to see how bad my writing was. I do love doing pixel art from time to time. I wanna get better at art and pixel art and I keep telling myself to, but I need to buckle down and actually deal with it, ugh.

Q: I’ve seen your pairing choices for your fanfictions so far but I have to ask, what was your first ship?

A: Definitely Kagome/Sesshoumaru before I even knew what shipping was. Good ol’ FF.net days. Q: You’ve come a long way and in that time you’ve written a good number of pieces. Which one of your works are you most proud of?

A: Blue Dream, the Lanille fic. I really wanted to capture that whole weird, floaty feeling of being high, and that feeling that time passes in like... scenes?? Like you can’t fully remember everything that happens but you get snippets of very specific things you do when you’re out — that’s why the last page or two of paragraphs are broken up so differently than the rest of the fic, like little micro screnes. I had a fucking blast writing that piece and I really hope other people enjoy it as much as I did. There’s a lot more I can say about it, including the minor reference to Final Fantasy IV and my decisions regarding how the smut scene was written. I could go into detail a bit if people cared haha.

Q: So, when you are writing, who or what is your inspiration when you write?

A: I started writing when I was little but I didn’t really have any real inspirations then. I wrote because it was fun to create something from almost nothing. The past few years I’ve had a couple inspirations. One writer from tumblr who wrote Princess Bubblegum/Marceline (Bubbline) fics from Adventure Time. They were EXTREMELY well-written. I mean that person’s just an amazing writer overall. What I loved about their writing was how they wrote in present tense. I don’t think I’d really seen this before and I loved how it made everything seem like it was happening now and not being retold by the narrator. Eventually they wrote less Bubbline, but they also got really annoying with their posting so I unfollowed. Oh well.

Now I don’t have many inspirations now, but I can say that as far as fanfiction is concerned, I do really wish I could write as well as SapphireSmoke. I haven’t read all her fics, but every one I do read is just so well-crafted and interesting, and the smut is top notch. I’m always fascinated every time I read a fic (they’re so long tho!).

Q: I understand you are currently on a hiatus, but what can we expect when you make your return to writing?

A: So the biggest reason why I’m on hiatus is because I have no motivation due to a variety of things (adulting, breakup, etc). I also haven’t felt very great about my writing for a long time and I’m trying to take a break to maybe regain some confidence. In any case, there’s a lot of stuff I wanna write when I start back up. I’ve been on a serious Doki Doki Literature Club kick. Love the idea of Monika trying to be the perfect girlfriend for the Player character, and I’d love to see them in some unorthodox fics like college settings where the game either doesn’t exist or exists in some other form.

I’d also love to write more Lanille. I still love this pairing a lot and can do a lot more with it, unlike the Farrons (still wanna write them too but they’re getting difficult). And there’s more that I wanna write too for other pairings including Fang/Serah and Paine/Rikku.

Q: Are you done with writing about the Farron sisters?

A: I am not done writing the Farrons. There’s still prompts I wanna do for Farronheit and I’d like to add to that until I completely burn out of them for good. They are definitely getting difficult to write. They feel too same-y, like there’s always some element of me making sure to show that their relationship is taboo, and then Serah using Snow as some sort of Lightning bait.... It gets repetitive.

Q: Outside of the erotic or smutty kind of stories what else have you written?

A: So I’m a gigantic werewolf fan and like inserting them into anything. I’ve liked them since I was a kid (probably Bloody Roar’s fault) and enjoy writing them as well. I’ve been disappointed with how werewolves are portrayed in media — boring ass one-dimensional movie monsters that are only good for killing. That gets stale. I wanted to write werewolves doing more shit — having families, lives, social circles, dealing with puberty and the shifting stage, dealing with their significant others and getting the courage to tell the ones who are human about their identity. I feel like those make more interesting stories. I literally am so obsessed with werewolves, I took the time out to do mass amounts of research to craft my own personal werewolf species to use as a basis for any werewolf fics I write after that. It needs to be edited heavily.

Q: Anything you don’t write?

A: I don’t have the stamina or speed to write a multichaptered fic, really, or at least a coherent one. I’ve tried with a Lanille once, and now I don’t want to finish the fic at all. Content-wise, and as far as smut, there are, of course, a list of kinks I am definitely not interested in and will never write. But it’s too hard to say on a general level.

Q: Do you have any issues with making sure your staying as true to the characters as possible? For example projecting yourself onto them. A: Lightning's personality is kinda close to my own so she's fairly easy to write. I can throw a lot more of myself into her and (hopefully) make her sound more realistic. Serah is a bit more difficult because her personality differs from mine so much (Vanille as well). I tried to do a lot of research on the characters before I wrote them so I played the game over, took note of different things like body language and verbal tics. like Lightning has a tendency to say "Right" when she faces an awkward or difficult situation and rolls her eyes a lot. Vanille bounces around a lot .

Best New Horror Movies on Netflix: Winter 2018

There's an overwhelming amount of horror movies to sift through on Netflix, so I've decided to take out some of the legwork by compiling a list of the season’s best new genre titles available on Netflix’s instant streaming service.

1. Gerald's Game

IT was undoubtedly the most entertaining Stephen King adaptation in recent memory, but Gerald's Game may be the most tense. The novel - which revolves around a middle-aged married couple's attempt to spice up their love life - was seemingly un-filmable, but director Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil) takes a creative yet logical approach to successfully translate the story from the page to the screen. The direction is stylish, despite largely involving only two actors in a single bedroom. Carla Gugino (Watchmen) and Bruce Greenwood (Star Trek) star, both delivering brilliant performances, with Henry Thomas (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial) and Carel Struycken (The Addams Family) in chilling supporting roles. Its left-field epilogue won't work for some, but the film remains a suspenseful, dead-filled experience that includes perhaps the most cringe-inducing sequence of the year.

2. 1922

1922 is an adaptation of a little-known Stephen King novella, published in his 2010 collection, Full Dark, No Stars. Like much of King's work, it doesn't shy away from the supernatural, yet it's firmly grounded in reality. The always-reliable Thomas Jane delivers a transformative performance in his third King film (following Dreamcatcher and The Mist). He stars as Wilfred James, a conflicted man who confesses to murdering his wife (Molly Parker. Deadwood) with the aid of his son (Dylan Schmid, Once Upon a Time) in 1922. Akin to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," Wilfred's unbearable guilt manifests itself. Cinematographer Ben Richardson (The Fault in Our Stars) utilizes a lot of natural light, while Faith No More's Mike Patton composes an atonal score. Writer-director Zak Hilditch (whose previous film, These Final Hours, is also worth seeking out) delivers a brooding, character-driven slow burner.

3. Raw

Raw made waves on the festival circuit when it caused multiple viewers to faint. It is indeed a uniquely repulsive film in more ways than one might expect - depicting everything from animal dissecting to bikini waxing to eye licking in graphic detail - but it's much more than a mindless gorefest. The French film is a compelling, darkly humorous coming-of-age story... with cannibalism. The plot revolves around Justine (Garance Marillier), a young vegetarian, as she enters her first semester at veterinary school. She receives the full college experience: hazing, coed living, experimentation, partying, flesh eating. Marillier's fearless performance is matched by a strong vision from writer-director Julia Ducournau.

4. Super Dark Times

From the first act of Super Dark Times, you might expect it to be a coming-of-age genre tale in the vein of Stranger Things and IT, but by the end you will find a film that shares more in common with River's Edge and Stand By Me. It's set in the '90s, complete with scrambled "adult" channels, but it doesn't beat the viewer over the head with nostalgia. Owen Campbell (The Americans) and Charlie Tahan (Ozark) star as best friends with a secret that drives a wedge between them. Co-writers Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski (Siren) capture the adolescent banter better than most films, while director Kevin Phillips makes an impressive feature debut. Living up to its title, Super Dark Times is a dark, tense experience.

5. Cult of Chucky

Child’s Play is a rare horror franchise that has maintained its original continuity, thanks to having Don Mancini - who has written every installment and directed the latter three - as the driving creative force. Cult of Chucky, the seventh entry in the series, brings together the franchise’s three distinct story lines - Nica (Fiona Dourif) from Curse of Chucky, Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) from Child’s Play 1-3, and Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) from Bride/Seed of Chucky. Taking cues from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warrior, the film takes place in a mental institution, where Nica bonds with the members of her therapy group. When they start dying one by one, Nica struggles to convince anyone that a possessed doll named Chucky (voiced, as always, by Brad Dourif) is responsible. Mancini’s well-paced script is fearless in its exploration of delightfully weird ideas, in addition to balancing the more serious tone with lighthearted fun. The result is as close as you can get to pleasing fans of all eras of Chucky. Read my full review of the film here.

6. The Bar

The Bar is the latest effort from reliable Spanish filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia (The Oxford Murders). It finds a group of strangers trapped in a seedy bar in downtown Madrid. Anyone that tries to leave is killed by an unseen assailant, with their bodies disappearing - blood and all - when no one is looking. Reminiscent of an episode of The Twilight Zone, suspicion grows and intrigue builds as the group must come together to solve the mystery. Iglesia does a fine job establishing an ensemble of quirky characters in a short time and then maintaining that momentum throughout the duration. He also injects his signature dark humor into the plot, helping to further set it apart from other contained thrillers.

7. Creep 2

2014's Creep (which is also streaming on Netflix and should be viewed first) was perhaps the last good, original found footage movie, made on a shoestring budget with copious improvisation. Star/co-writer Mark Duplass (Safety Not Guaranteed), whose eerie performance as an idiosyncratic murderer anchored Creep, and director/co-writer Patrick Brice return for Creep 2, which slightly expands the mythology without sacrificing the intimacy that made the first film so effective. Duplass' character now goes by Aaron, assuming not only the name of Brice's character from the first Creep but also his interest in filmmaking. Sara (Desiree Akhavan) responds to Aaron's Craigslist ad looking for a videographer, and it’s not long after their meeting that he admits to being a serial killer. But Aaron is going through a bit of a midlife crisis, so he employs Sara to film a documentary about him. Much like the first Creep, not a whole lot happens before the climax, but Duplass' eccentric character and vulnerable performance keep you watching with bated breath.

8. Killing Ground

Killing Ground is an unapologetic Australian thriller in the vein of Eden Lake, Wolf Creek, Deliverance, and The Hills Have Eyes. In other words, it's an intense punch in the gut. In the film, a couple's romantic camping trip is interrupted by unhinged locals against whom they must fight for survival. The familiar set-up is elevated by intriguing flashbacks to events a few days prior to the main story, the context of which adds even more weight to the harrowing situation. Although not the most original story ever told, Killing Ground is an effective, realistic debut for writer-director Damien Power.

9. Veronica

Verónica is a Spanish-language psychological thriller from Mexico. Co-directors Carlos Algara and Alejandro Martinez-Beltran opted to shoot the film in black and white with gorgeous, precise cinematography, bringing to mind the recent The Eyes of My Mother. A psychologist (Arcelia Ramírez) is offered a substantial sum of money to take on the evasive yet intelligent Veronica de la Serna (Olga Segura) as a patient. It's a simple set-up, consisting of little more than dialogue between the two characters, but the intriguing therapy sessions slowly reveal Veronica's deep-seated issues. The plot takes an unexpected, exciting turn for the final act, but it ultimately leads to a twist that is trite and, frankly, unnecessary. But don't let that deter you; the rest of the film is positively riveting.

10. Red Christmas

Red Christmas is a holiday horror film that - despite hailing from Australia - captures the typical Christmas season quite well, complete with the family drama it often entails. It also addresses the topical subject of reproductive rights, employs both a genre legend (E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial's Dee Wallace, in one of her strongest performances in years) and an actor with Down syndrome (Gerard O'dwyer), and tells a decent horror story in the process. Similar to You're Next, the film features a killer interrupting a strained family gathering, blending home invasion and slasher influences. It won’t replace any of the classics, but Red Christmas is a fine addition to the Christmas horror pantheon. Read my full review of the film here.

11. Don't Kill It

Don't Kill It is a fun amalgam of horror, action, comedy, and western from director Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider). A rash of homicides - in which each killer murders the previous killer - lead FBI agent Evelyn Pierce (Kristina Klebe, Halloween) back to the podunk Mississippi town she once called home in order to investigate the case. She reluctantly teams with Jebediah Woodley (Dolph Lundgren, Rocky IV), a self-described demon hunter, to stop the body-hopping demon on the loose. There are a couple of big, bloody set pieces that make the abundance of exposition worthwhile. Clocking in at a lean 83 minutes, the film plays like a more charming and entertaining version of a Syfy original movie.

Bonus: Dark

Comparisons between Dark and Stranger Things are inevitable - both Netflix original series concern a mystery of a missing child in a small town in which supernatural elements are at play - but Dark approaches the material in am much more subtle, subversive manner. In addition to Stranger Things' coming-of-age through a genre lens, the German show has the mind-bending rhetoric of Donnie Darko and the mystique of Twin Peaks, with a touch of Back to the Future for good measure. There may be a few too many characters for its own good, but the story - in which a disappearance in the present is somehow tied to similar events that occurred in 1986 - is undeniably well told and well shot. I'm already eager to binge a second season.

Bonus: Mindhunter

Mindhunter is an original series from executive producer David Fincher (Gone Girl, Seven), who also directs several episodes, with Joe Penhall (The Road) serving as showrunner. Based on the true crime book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, it follows FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff. Glee) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany, Alien 3) as they conduct interviews with convicted murderers in the late '70s for their groundbreaking work in behavioral science. After an attention-grabbing opening scene, the show takes a couple of episodes to gain momentum, but it's virtually impossible to look away after that. There's an abundance of heady dialogue, in typical Fincher fashion, though it's never short of enthralling.

First of all, I want to say thank you. Thank you for fucking me over. Thank you for hurting me. Thank you for putting me in a position where I needed to change. Loosing you was hard but loosing myself and trying to discover who I was without you was harder. You’ll deny it but I changed to be with you. I’m not the same person I was three years ago and I’m thankful for many things you did for me and how you helped me develop and change into a better person but eventually you was changing me into someone I’m not. I was turning into you. I was doing everything for you. Making myself available for you. Being at your beck and call all the time and spending my time with you and your friends or family. Don’t get me wrong I loved a lot of those things. Like I adored your family and any time with them was a pleasure and your friends also. I was doing things you wanted to do and I’ll admit some of the things I enjoyed I won’t lie but when it was constant it wasn’t me. I stopped being an individual. I stopped being myself. I tried so hard to be you or be the person you would want me to be, you didn’t want to accept I was the person who had flaws, issues and problems and I was a person who needed to be an individual. I dressed the way you liked so you’d like it, I spoke differently around you to impress you, I did so many things with your friends just to make it look like I would do anything to please you, I had to do things I hated to make you happy and be distant with my friends and family just be there for you. There are many things I want to be angry about with you but it’s not worth it. It’s not worth me hating myself and wanting to die and thinking about what I could’ve done more. In reality of it I couldn’t do more at all. Because it would have never been enough or worthy for you. I would do a thousand things for you but you’d only remember the one thing I didn’t and it’s not okay. You don’t want to remember all the good shit we had or did. All the happy memories. You want to remember the bad times because it makes you feel better about yourself and the situation. You want to make it easier to forget me by making me the bad person but in reality I’m someone who will never leave your head because I’ll always have a place in your life, I’m not easy to forget. That’s not okay but it’s okay for you. I want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to do and be better. I couldn’t have done them while I was with you. I didn’t time and my life resolved around you. Maybe one day if it’s meant to be we will be better for each other but for now we still aren’t ready. I don’t think you are making the appropriate decisions or life choices right now and I care for you a lot and I would be open minded if you needed to talk like Yeah it may make me sad but I care too much for you to let it affect us but it’s not my place to say anything anymore. You could be an individual and do everything you wanted it but I couldn’t. It was so much more than a break up as ive lost my family. Ands that’s so fucking unfair that I realistically couldn’t even say goodbye and I’ve lost friends because unfortunately I befriended a lot of your friends and I appreciate they were yours first but I spent a lot of time with them and I’ve had to throw away bonds and friendships because of it. I’ve made friends with People I thought hated me and wanted me to stay away forever but I realised to become better I need to acknowledge my mistakes and mend the things I’ve broken. So I have but I’m aware some things I’ll never be able to fix and if I can it won’t be any time soon. Broken bones need time to heal. It’s not like a broken vase where you can quick time fix it with some super glue. Some things are still a work in progress but others have worked out so well for me. You’ll probably hate who I’m friends with now but that’s okay. All I’ve realistically done is prove with or without you I wouldn’t have done the things you always thought I would. You didn’t trust me enough to be friends with them and it’s okay. I understand. I’ve got another job because I realised the job I had made me so sad and depressed. I’ll admit my work stress and drama was something I took out on you and it was wrong of me to do so but you were the closest person to me for me too. I shouldn’t have done it but it happens. It’s stupid because I still check on you everyday and I shit post everyday because I know you check it but it’s okay man. I just like to know you are good. All I ever wanted was for you to be happy and be you. At first I didn’t want you for you. I didnt even have an attraction for you but as the days went by and I spoke to you more I fell in love with you for you. You could’ve done anything and I still wouldve adored you. Sometimes I still do...I wasn’t the best person some of the times I’ll happily admit that because I wasn’t. I was a shit person at times and I was nasty towards you too. Loosing you was the change I needed to be better. Well I was actually changing when I was with you but it was too late. That’s no ones fault. But you will never want to see how perfect things were before we broke up. I wanted us to be better. I wanted to be grown. I was always trying to ask you about your days or how you was feeling and trying to get you to talk to me for weeks. You didn’t want to. I tried my fucking best in the last month but you stopped the effort. I’m sorry that my best wasn’t enough for you to try at all. But it’s so okay. I’ve been my saddest and happiest these past few months without you. Saddest being I’m still crazy about you and I still miss you everyday. But it gets easier everyday and I hope one day it just eventually stops. The happiest being me, I am me. I found the bestest of friends and I’ve done things I would never have done and I’m having a life and that’s something we both can say I didn’t have, unfortunately my life was you. I had to be alone to be okay. I had to let the pain you made me feel hurt me and let it take it’s course because I know one day it will hit you that you never grieved. Just like a death you need to process it and you didn’t. You wasn’t sad because you was distracted. Distractions are good but the reality is one day it will hit you and you’ll process the feelings I’ve had to when it’s too late. It will hurt you more knowing that you could’ve grieved sooner. I do however understand and I’m aware of the pain I caused you I’m sorry, truly.

Car Insurance Claim Help? On the 4/7/2011 I was at a set of traffic lights that was (RED) of my way to the shops. As the lights went green I begin to move off slowly as I did another car came from the left of me and tried to turn right as he speed up he crashed into the drivers side of the car. He clearly jumped a red light (Clearly Seen on CCTV). I was in total shock at the time! After he crashed into my car he went to drive off by reversing, I jumped out of my car to stood in his was so he could not drive off the witness behind me called the police while I was stopping his from driving off he started to drive forwards trying to me me out the way. After the driver spoke to the police on the phone, he then gave me his Name, Phone number and Insurance information. The next day I called my insurance company they was vary helpful and I believe the clam would be settled in my favor as I had CCTV of the crash as I had a camera inside of my car and a witness that was behind my car at the time of the crash. After nearly 4Months I have now revived a letter stating that the claim has been closed on a Without Prejudice Basis. When I contacted Aviva to see what the 3rd party has not accepted full liability they said it was dealt with like this as the 3rd party who crashed into me was not responding to and calls or letters that have send him. Aviva did not asked to see the CCTV of the crash and did not take into account the witness statement. WHAT CAN I DOOO??""
