Waking up had never hurt so much. There was a cannula in your nose and an IV in your hand. Every intake of breath burned in your lungs. Your eyes blinked away the light, looking around the room as you took in your surroundings.

To your left, you could see the door to your room and a couple chairs sat next to your bed. A computer and other medical equipment took up the corner next to your bed. At the foot of your bed stood your bed table, covered in different floral arrangements and cards. To your right, a wall of windows covered by heavy curtains sat above a small couch where a man sat, head in his hands.

“Kyle?” you questioned, voice cracking from the lack of use and the cotton type dryness of your mouth. Kyle shot off the couch and to your side, grabbing a cup of water with a straw and holding it to your lips. You wrapped your lips around the end and sucked, groaning at the relief of the water wetting your palate.

“Thanks,” you croaked out as he smiled down at you, the perfect white of his teeth almost shining in the low light of the room. “How long have I been out?” you asked, looking around the room again with a furrowed brow.

“Two days. Those hits you took really did you in. Otherwise, you’re alright. You were dehydrated and over tired,” Kyle explained calmly, moving to sit in the armchair tucked into the right corner next to your bed.

“Is every-” You coughed, groaning at the pain of using your throat and Kyle shushed you before speaking. “Price and I are alright, normal scrapes and scratches. Johnny got treated for a piece of rebar that tore a chunk out of his side. He’s actually in the next room,” he informed you, sitting back in the chair. “Si?” you inquired, not missing that Kyle had left the big brute out of his roll call.

“He was really hurt, dove,” he drug a hand down his face, closing his eyes to take a deep breath before his chocolate eyes met yours. “He’s in the ICU. Fractured his tibia and broke his fibula. But the docs are concerned about the sternal fracture,” he continued, watching you for your reaction.

“Can I see them?” you croaked out your question, using the remote to lift the head of your bed so you were sitting. “We’d have to ask the doc, but we were mainly just waiting for you to wake up,” he answered, standing and coming to the side of the bed to take your hand.

“I’m so glad you’re okay, dove. We thought we were going to lose you.” He brought your hand to his face and you cupped his jaw gently while he leaned forward to press a gentle kiss to your temple before resting his forehead against yours for the soft, quiet moment of relief to wash over both of you.

The silence was filled with slow breaths as the two of you reveled in the presence of the other. Unfortunately, the silence was broken as your doctor came in and smiled. “Well, look at that. Our sleeping beauty has awoken,” she chirped, much too happy for this early in the morning. “Everything looks good. We do encourage you to get up and walk around a little throughout the day. Don’t stress yourself though,” she continued, chipper as ever.

“Can I see Johnny and Simon?” you asked, eyes eager and glassy as you gazed at the doctor. “Hm, I don’t see why not. Mr. Mactavish is next door. He’s been awake all night asking for you. Mr. Riley is in a medically induced coma to allow for his wounds to heal more. He put up quite the fight when he first woke up, but you’re welcome to see him,” she concluded, watching you and Kyle with a keen eye.

With a brief goodbye and directions to Kyle to make sure you didn’t stress too hard or take out your IV, the doctor disappeared again. You were already working on getting out of the bed, grateful someone had thought to put some grippy socks on your feet.

Kyle rushed around the end of the bed, grabbing the sterile, papery robe that hung next to the door. He slid it over your shoulders and tied it around your waist so your back end wasn’t exposed.

Together, the pair of you trekked next door and you let out a sigh of relief when you found Johnny awake. “Johnny…” you sighed out his name, shuffling over to the bed and dragging Kyle along behind you. “Petal, you’re okay. I didn’t get to see you before they took me in for surgery and then everything with Si-” His words were cut off as you draped yourself over him in a careful hug and he placed his hand over the back of your head, sighing at the relief of your presence.

Kyle’s hand rubbed over your back until you stood from your spot, bringing a hand to gently cup Johnny’s jaw. “Thank you,” you whispered, looking over your shoulder to Kyle. “To all of you. You saved me and I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.”

“I can think of a few things, little bird.” John stood at the door, a soft smile on his face as he looked at the scene before him. You shuffled over to him, pushing past Kyle and wrapping your arms around the waist of the Captain. “I’ll do it. Whatever it is,” you murmured against his chest, so happy that they were okay. His bulky arms wrapped around you and you felt him breathe you in as his chest expanded.

Before he could break his long running streak of not crying (he cried when they brought Simon in but he won’t tell you that), he sniffled and pulled back, hands on your shoulders as he looked you over. His eyes hardened slightly at the bandage still around your throat, but overall he was glad you were okay.

“Kyle, why don’t you stay here with Johnny? I’ll take her to see Simon,” John offered, pulling you into his side. Kyle nodded and the two men said their goodbyes as John ushered you from the room.

As you walked alongside him, you noticed his steps were measured and slow in order to not outpace you. He kept you tucked into his side, the IV pole in the other hand as he led you to Simon’s room.

“I want you to be prepared to see him. He doesn’t look like the Simon you remember right now. He was crushed under some rubble,” you gasped and interrupted his speech before he squeezed your shoulders. “He’ll be okay, birdie. He just needs time.”

John pushed open the door to Simon’s room and you gasped as the form of him came into view. He was bruised everywhere. The blood pooling under his skin as his chest lay wrapped tightly from being opened to reset bones. His leg was wrapped up in a cast, propped up on some pillows and you could feel the tears welling up in your eyes.

Stumbling to his side, you pulled a chair up next to the bed and curled up on the seat, resolute in not leaving. You took his battered hand in yours and gently drug your fingertips over the ragged skin. “Si, oh god, I miss you. I know they say you’ll be okay, but this is all my fault,” you muttered through tears as they ran freely down your face.

A hand came to rest on your shoulder which brought your attention to the other man in the room. John squatted down so he was at eye level with you. “In no way is this your fault. This is the consequences of our actions, not yours. Karma, if you will,” he reassured you, an edge to his voice as he grumbled the last sentence. You didn’t respond, just turned back to face Simon.

With a sigh, John stood and pressed a long kiss to the top of your head before stepping back. He was relieved that you, Johnny and Kyle were okay. But until Simon woke, he knew the entire group would be thrown off.

Simon couldn’t see much, a burlap sack covering his eyes. Light peaked through the holes in the fabric, illuminating shapes in the room. There was someone across from him, mimicking his position. Tied to a chair, slumped in the seat while the sounds of whimpers floating to his ears.

Your whimpers. He growled low in his throat, yanking on his bindings. “Get your hands off her!” he bellowed, keeping his panic and worry in a tidy little box and letting his anger rage on the surface. He yanked at his bindings again when the hood was removed and he blinked away the sudden light.

“O-ho! Look who finally woke up, precious. Just in time to watch me slice you into shreds,” his captor jovially exclaimed, clapping Simon on the shoulder. Simon, no, Ghost’s teeth snapped at the hand as he finally got his bearings and the face of Darin Moses filtered into his view.

Beady eyes smiled down at him as Moses moved over to where you sat, crying through the swelling of your eye. The glint of a knife blinded Simon for a moment before your scream met his ears. The knife sliced into the top of your thigh, blood immediately beginning to soak the fabric of your pants. Over and over and over. Slice and scream.

“Si, oh god, I miss you. I know they say you’ll be okay, but this is all my fault.”

Where was your voice coming from? Your fault? No, luv, it’s not your fault. His. His fault. Didn’t protect you well enough. Shouldn’t have left you alone.

Slice and scream. Over and over and over until everything went black.

It was the same. Burlap sack. Blinking away the light. Your beaten face. This time General Shepherd stood over you.

Slice and Scream. Over and over and over.

Again. Burlap sack. Blinking away the light. Your beaten face. Phillip Graves slicing away at your skin.

“Simon, please, get better. The doctors are going to wake you up soon. I’ll be right here, my love.”

Proxy in Command (Creepypasta x Reader) Chapter 49

Series Masterlist

Slenderman woke up with shock as yesterday's events immediately flooded through his head. He noticed right away that he no longer had wounds, they were completely healed.

He didn't understand why seeing as he used his remaining strength to heal his former proxy. He was surprised that he was even alive. Never mind that, how's Y/N and how did Y/N return to the mansion? Zalgo made it clear she wouldn't be able to escape unless he was bluffing. Although, that still didn't explain how she arrived here.

He found himself teleported to her room. E.J was sitting down on her chair, writing some notes. Splendor and Offender were sitting on a small couch on the side while Trender was sitting next to her unconscious figure on the bed.

"How is she?" He broke the silence, causing them to jump.

"Thanks, brother, for healing my wounds," Offender mocked him.

Slenderman titled his head. From what they knew, Slenderman was the most powerful out of the four and was the only one with healing powers. "How did you heal me? You don't have healing abilities."

"I'm surprised I have healing abilities as well." Offender stood up and placed a hand on his shoulder. "You have a lot to explain, like why did you choose to stay and fight Zalgo when Y/N was already here?"

"Zalgo made it clear she wouldn't be able to leave the underworld so I was fighting him. I didn't know she had already returned. If she was conscious when she was brought back, I would be able to see it." Slenderman walked around her bed to be on her side.

He felt guilty his actions had led her to this. If only he had trusted her, she wouldn't be in this situation. Zalgo could have been killed after their first battle and they could have been happy together. All the pain she went through was because of his mistakes. She had paid the price.

He sighed as he placed a hand on her forehead before he saw her last moments. He witnessed how Zalgo brutally whipped her in a dark room, and how he punished her for every single mistake she made in the underworld. He eventually dropped her on the floor when he arrived in the underworld. Zalgo taunted her before leaving the room. She was awake when she heard a door opening, but that's when she finally passed out. Someone must have brought her back.

Slenderman took a step back, taking his hand off as he looked at her in shock. He couldn't believe Zalgo had done that after he had confessed he cared for her when they fought. There was no way he can make it up to her after what she had experienced.

He snapped his head toward E.J. "What's her state?"

"She's in a coma. She lost a lot of blood and her blood pressure was extremely high. We're extremely fortunate. If she had been brought later, she would have died."

Slenderman sighed as he glanced at the machines around her. From the IV fluid to the ventilator to the nasal cannula she had underneath her nose, they were all a reminder of how close to dying she was. He wishes he could go back and make her immortal.

"What did you see?" Offender, who stood behind him, asked.

"Zalgo hurt her and teased her about how he could bring her back to life if she died. He left her alone after I arrived, but she wasn't awake when she was brought back." He glanced at his brothers before looking back at her. "I have a bad feeling about this. I worry if Zalgo will return to fetch her now that I completely lost access to the under realm and wouldn't be able to rescue her. From now on, I don't want her to be in this room by herself. I want at least two pastas to be supervising her."

"We wouldn't mind watching over her." Trender stood up. "After all, that's what we've done since she returned."

"Have you gotten some sleep at least?"

"No, we haven't," Splendor answered.

"Why don't you four catch on some sleep? I'll watch her in the meantime." Slender offered.

Offenderman scoffed. "What guarantees you won't kill her?"

"I fought Zalgo to bring her back," Slenderman reminded him. "I won't kill her."

"That doesn't guarantee shit!"

The door opened, revealing Sally who didn't take her eyes off the bed. "Is she awake?"

"She's fine Sally, but she might be asleep for a few days," Trender answered her.

Sally tilted her head. "But she's not Sleeping Beauty who needs a prince to wake her up."

Offenderman chuckled as he carried her in his arms so she could look at Y/N's sleeping figure. "You're right, she doesn't need a guy to kiss her. She'll wake up on her own."

"But can't we wake her up? I want to talk to her!" Offender placed her on the side of the bed, where she could examine her closer.

"Her brain still processes sounds, Sally. She'll hear you." E.J rubbed her shoulders as he stood behind her. "If you excuse me, I'll be in my room to get some sleep."

Slender nodded, looking at his brothers. "You three also need rest. Please believe me that I won't let something happen to her, Sally will be here."

Offenderman grunted before Splendor stepped in. "Slendy has worked tirelessly to bring her back. You can trust him." E.J awkwardly left the room, giving them their privacy.

Sighing, Offender gave up. "I will kill you if she dies. Mark my words Slenderman because I'm not playing around with this."

Trender placed his hand on Offenders, "He knows brother."

"I'm only agreeing because I'm tired and hungry, but as soon as I wake up, you're out."

Slender nodded. "I can also bring some pastas to watch over her. I don't want to leave her alone, especially after what Zalgo did."

As the brothers left the room, Sally traced figures in her hand. Slenderman sat on the other side of the bed.

"Can she really hear me?" She asked uncertain. He nodded. "I don't know what to say."

If Slender had a mouth, he would have smiled. "Tell her how you felt when she wasn't here, how you feel right now, or what you wish for her to do. You can tell her anything, child."

She glanced at her father figure before looking at her again. "Hi sis, I hope you don't mind me calling you that and I hope you can hear me." Slenderman rubbed her shoulder as a way to encourage her to continue. "I missed you a lot. I thought you died but you came back to us. Now I know you're a badass like L.J said." She chuckled.

Slender took a mental note to scoff at L.J later but continued to listen to her.

"When L.J told me you were back, I was excited to hug you. He later mentioned how you were hurt and I couldn't see you yet. I'm just glad you're back. I hope you wake up soon." She wiped her tear off her cheek as she looked at him. "Your turn, dad."

Slenderman gulped as he looked down at her. Although he watched Y/N grow up, he had never thought about Y/N calling him that until now. If only he has been kinder, he could have been a father figure to her.

He had a ton of things to say but he didn't know where to start.

"I'm sorry Y/N," he paused. "For everything. I was unfair and the guilt is eating me alive which I rightly deserve. I wish I could go back in time and change the way I treated you. You deserve so much more." He gently squeezed her hand as he gazed at Sally. "I need to tell you more things but I'll wait. Things will be different once you wake up. I hope you do that soon. You may not do it for me, but do it for them."

The other pastas were sitting in the living room in silence as Jeff, Liu, Dark, and Ben were playing Mario Kart on the floor. The proxies sat on one of the couches as L.J, Puppeteer and Painter sat on the other one.

E.J barely took a step down from the staircase which caught their attention.

"How is she?" The pastas yelled at the same time.

E.J sighed before he walked to the living room. "She's in a coma but she's fine. Slenderman mentioned how he wants Y/N to be guarded in case Zalgo attempts to kill her now that she's vulnerable."

Masky furrowed his eyebrows. "Then why did he bring her back to us? Couldn't he have killed her when she was with him?"

"That's the thing Masky, we don't think Zalgo brought her back to us. We don't know how she returned."

Jeff scoffed at him, "So you expect us to believe she teleported to us?"

E.J started to grow impatient. "As I said, we don't know Jeff. Now if you excuse me I'm going to eat something before I sleep." He teleported away so he could get some peace.

Jeff grunted as he lay on the floor.

"Zalgo had mentioned if he ever killed her, he would torture her soul then revive her again," Dark pointed out. "He's capable of killing her."

Puppeteer crossed his arms in front of his chest. "That son of a bitch."

(~One Week Later~)

It has been exactly a week since her return yet she hasn't shown any signs of her awakening. The pastas took turns in watching over her, but the majority of the time it was the Slender brothers and Slenderman himself. During this time, Slenderman didn't send the proxies or the pastas on missions unless they were necessary. Some pastas continued with their killing sprees while the others stayed in the mansion in case Y/N woke up. They started to believe Zalgo had given up but Slenderman refused to accept it.

Offender sat on the chair beside the proxy as he stared at the ceiling. He had promised his niece he would stop assaulting women if she woke up soon. He was willing to do anything just to bring her back. His gaze moved toward the pastas that were sitting on the couch. The ravenette killer was playing with his knife while the other killer kept playing with his strings. The room would have been completely silent if it wasn't for the heart monitor.

"You know," Jeff broke the silence. "I bet Zalgo won't get her. If she's immune to his power, Zalgo has no reason to keep her. Maybe that's why he wanted to kill her and maybe have her last moments with us before she dies. You know, to make us feel miserable and kill us at our vulnerable moment."

"That still doesn't explain how she got here," Puppeteer muttered. "Zalgo was busy trying to kill Slender when she was brought back."

"Maybe Zalgo returned to bring her back then confronted Slenderman in the throne room?"

Puppeteer moved his gaze to Offender who was already looking at Jeff.

"Jeffrey might be right, but why hasn't Zalgo attacked now? She's been with us for a week."

Jeff shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe he wants to kill her when she wakes up? I still doubt he'll come back."

"Don't jinx it," Puppet rolled his eyes. "Even if he came, I'll be sure to kill that fucker."

"We." Offender corrected him. "We aren't letting him get to her."

Instantly, he felt someone use their hand to choke him. He didn't need to look up to see who it was. His body heat gave him away. Both pastas stood up and were about to yell until Zalgo spoke.

"Yell and I won't hesitate to break his neck." Offenderman tried to claw his hand but Zalgo took notice. He placed his other hand on top of his head which made him lose consciousness.

Zalgo chuckled as he walked toward the two pastas. Puppeteer tried to use his strings to restrain him but Zalgo teleported behind them. He placed his hands behind their heads to make them lose consciousness as well. Their bodies fell onto the cold hard floor.

A smirk appeared on his face as looked at her unconscious figure on the bed. He slowly walked his way toward her.

"Here comes the bride," he drawled as he traced his finger on her body, which was covered with a white sheet, all the way to her shoulder. "All dressed in white." He used his fingers to trace her cheek. " Although, I imagined you wearing something different than this." He scoffed. "After a week of thinking, I decided to change my plans. I did everything to save us! To save you from them, but it appears it didn't matter to you."

He took the nasal cannula off her nose, wanting her to have a hard time breathing.

"It pains me I have to do this, my love, but it's either we both die or I survive." He glanced at the monitor, noticing her heart rate racing up. "It shouldn't hurt if I have one last conversation with you, will it?" he whispered, placing the palm of his hand on her forehead.

He stood there for a solid minute as he interrupted her from her dream. As soon as he was about to reveal his plan to her, the door opened.

Slenderman threw his tendrils at him but Zalgo was quicker. He summoned a dagger before stabbing her in the stomach.

By the time his tendril wrapped around Zalgo's arm, the heart monitor was going crazy. Y/N will die if her wound doesn't heal soon.

"I'm doing her a favor!" Zalgo roared as he used his claws to stab his tendrils.

Slender used all his tendrils to hold him in place. Zalgo was a strong creature so there wasn't much he could do.

"Leave my proxy alone, Zalgo!"

"You haven't marked her again Slenderman nor have you given her immortality! She's not yours, she's mine!"

Slenderman grunted before yelling out for E.J. Once he appeared in the room, Slender teleported him and Zalgo to the backyard, away from Y/N.

"What do you want from her!" He hissed as he felt his tendrils burning.

"I'm afraid that's the least of your concerns. You should believe me when I say her future isn't the brightest. I'm saving her from the pain she will have to endure if she survives." Zalgo finally escaped from the tendrils. He teleported in front of Slenderman as he choked him with his grip.

"If she ever dies and you revive her, my souls will escape killing you and the pastas whether I'm alive or not!" He spat before teleporting away.

Slenderman immediately went to her room seeing that E.J was trying to take care of her wound.

"Allow me," he said as he used a tendril to heal her wound completely. After he had done that, the monitor went off, signaling them that her heart had stopped beating.

"No! Y/N!" He yelled, causing the remaining Slender brothers to appear.

"Brother what's the- Y/N!"

"I need you guys to leave," E.J alerted them as he reached for a black bag under her bed. "I can still save her."

Trender and Splendor both grabbed Offender and the other two killers before teleporting away. They came back a few seconds later to fetch their other brother.

"Punish me, not them!" Slender held her cheeks.

"Sir, you need to leave."

"Don't let him win! We need you Y/N! I need you!" He cried as his brothers pulled him away "Y/N, please! You can't leave us!"

Trender shut the door before he fell onto his knees. Offender awoke only to pin Slenderman to the wall again.

"If she dies I-"

"You'll kill me, I know!"

Offender shook his head. "That's too gracious. I will make sure you stay alive so that guilt can kill you alive!"

"I know, I know!" Slender fell to his knees. "She can't die. Not now that we just brought her back!"

Splendor closed his eyes as he joined his brothers on the floor. "She's strong, I have faith she'll survive."

They stood there in silence for a couple of minutes before E.J opened the door. They all got up, eager to hear about her condition.

"She's alive again but," he paused.

"But what!" Offenderman demanded.

E.J sighed before he looked up at them.

"If she doesn't wake up in the next couple of days, I fear she never will."

Summary: After the events of Spiderman: No Way Home, Peter 3 is determined to make some changes to his life. It starts with a new job, and a chance meeting with a beautiful stranger in a bar.

Notes: The lonely, somewhat tortured TASM!/Andrew Garfield version of Peter Parker in Spiderman: No Way Home broke my heart a bit. This is my attempt to give him his happy ending.

I can’t say too much, as there’s a mystery at the heart of this tale that I don’t want to spoil.

But I can say this will be a multi-part story with a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance with an OC character (the x reader format doesn’t work for this particular story - sorry!)

She blinked against the glare of the light.

She was in some sort of medical room, the walls sterile and the fluorescent lights in the ceiling casting everything in a sickly white light. An IV stand was next to her, the tubing snaking down to end in a cannula in her arm. For a brief moment, as the grogginess from whatever drug they'd been pumping into her lingered, she thought maybe she was in a hospital. That she and Peter had been rescued.

But, no. Hospitals didn’t tend to strap their patients into chairs.

She pulled against the restraints, but there was no give in the thick metal bands across her wrists, chest and ankles. Glancing to her right, she saw Peter, trussed up in his own chair, his head slumped to the side. His mask was off and lying on his lap, allowing her to see his closed eyes and relaxed mouth.

He was still out of it.

How long had they been here?

“He’ll be fine,” Allard said. He was sat at a computer station to her left, surrounded by Hydra soldiers. He’d shed his tuxedo jacket and was leaning back in his chair, one long leg crossed over the other, watching her.

“What was in that gas?” She tried to keep her voice calm. She didn't want Allard to have the satisfaction of knowing how terrified she was for Peter.

“My own formulation. Designed to nullify the specific attributes of your arachnid friend over there. Unfortunately, I may have gotten the dosage wrong. So I had to keep you on ice until he recovered, which should be any moment now." Allard smiled, a terrifyingly cold smirk. "I’ve had my eye on Spider-man for a while, you see. I’ve been very keen to get him down here,” he gestured around him at the lab. “Imagine my surprise when you brought him with you tonight. It was like all my Christmases had come at once. Two genetically-mutated marvels for the price of one.” He chuckled.

Her blood ran cold. That was the second time he’d alluded to her gene mutation.

How did he know?

“Never been called a ‘marvel’ before. I kinda like it.” The voice was croaky, but getting stronger with each word. “Maybe I should start calling myself the ‘Friendly Neighbourhood Marvel’ instead.”

Peter! He was okay!

“Nice of you to join us, Mr Parker,” Allard said, strolling towards them. “I was just explaining to Jennifer here, how happy I am to have two such wonderful specimens in my lab. I’ve known about her for a while, but I must say, your true identity came as quite a surprise.”

“Ditto,” Peter said, darkly.

Allard chuckled again. “I’m who I’ve always presented myself as - a humble scientist trying to better the human race. I guess we just have different ideas about who is classed as human and who is…not.”

“Spoken like a true Nazi.”

“Hydra separated from the Nazis during World War II. They were a political organisation, we’re based in science. And science is eternal.”

“Spoken like a true fascist eugenicist, then,” Peter corrected. “But that seems like splitting hairs to me.”

Allard’s jovial mood dissipated. “Labels aren’t important. What is important is creating the next race of super-humans. And thanks to the samples I'll harvest from both of you - and your father’s research, Jennifer - I can begin to realise that dream.”

She jerked to attention. Allard raised his eyebrows at her surprise. “You didn’t think I knew?”

Her heart started racing. Glancing to Peter, she could see him studying her, a confused expression on his face.

“I must admit,” he said, leaning against the metal countertop opposite them, “You had me fooled for a long time. But blood never lies. I got hold of the sample you left behind during your attempted break in at GenTech. It was simply a matter of cross-referencing that with the DNA profiles of the staff on file, and voila I found my culprit.”

She closed her eyes. Shit. The blood from her arm had given her away. She had been so stupid! Of course Allard would have found a way to gather genetic data from all his employees. The man had no ethical framework and an obsession with DNA.

“But then…something unexpected happened. I analysed your samples further,” Allard explained, as he walked to a small refrigerated unit in the corner of the lab. “And hidden in the depths of your DNA I found certain markers.”

He retrieved a case containing several vials of green fluid. “These markers would look like junk DNA to anyone but me. But I recognised them from a certain serum.”

He placed the vials down in front of her.

Serum X-4175.

“There was always something strange about this concoction,” he said, gesturing to the vials. “I could reverse engineer the formula easily enough. But I could never get it to work on any of my test subjects - all of them died. And then I realised - it was specifically keyed to a DNA profile. Gabriel Lambert-Dupont’s DNA”.

“That must have pissed you off,” she said, trying to sound brave and irreverent when inside her resolve was crumbling. “That you killed your favourite student for nothing.”

“He didn’t need to die,” Allard snapped. “If he’d have just handed over the research - or came to work for me again - he and your mother would still be alive today.”

“His conscious wouldn’t let him!” She fired back. “He knew you were a monster. He was terrified what you would do with that research.”

“Well, I have it now. With your DNA unlocking the secrets of X-4175, I can create a new race of soldiers - ones who can never be injured.”

Her heart started racing in fear. In her quest to save Mel, she had gifted Allard what he’d always wanted…and ensured her parents had died in vain.

She tried one last desperate bluff. “You’re delusional. The serum is a cure for Clark’s disease - an inherited neurodegenerative condition. That’s all.”

He cocked his head, studying her. “Is that how you want to play this?”

She swallowed. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He nodded slowly. “Have it your way.”

He took the gun from the nearest guard and shot her in the stomach.

Peter was confused.

Seriously confused.

Maybe the tranquilliser gas hadn’t completely worn off, and he was on some weird psychedelic trip.

Because Allard was implying that Jen was the one who had tried to break into his lab. That Jen was an employee of GenTech.

And that was ridiculous.

Right?

“You’re delusional,” Jen said, looking seriously freaked out. “The serum is a cure for Clark’s disease - an inherited neurodegenerative condition. That’s all.”

Jen was sick?

More confusion. He needed CliffsNotes on this kidnapping.

“Is that how you want to play this?” Allard asked.

Jen tipped her chin up, trying to look brave, but Peter could see the her hands trembling. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Allard’s next words were chilling. “Have it your way.”

Then he shot her.

“No!” Peter cried, watching a stain of blood grow on Jen’s stomach, seeing her hunched over against her restraints, biting her lip in pain. “What the fuck did you just do?”

He battled against the metal bands holding him to his chair, but either they were made of Vibranium or he was still weaker than normal.

Allard shoved the gun in the waistband of his pants and watched Jen with detached curiosity.
