Emmett juggled the little gift between his hands as he awkwardly waited in the lobby of Fox Tower. He and Syd were supposed to be leaving in a little bit but he still had one last gift to give before he left. He hoped Syd would understand. She probably would. He doubted she’d leave him behind...but that didn’t make him worry any less. And maybe it wasn’t all worry about Sydney either, he wasn’t entirely sure how to go about giving gifts to people he’d only known one semester. In the end he’d tapped out a brief text and sent it to her before he could convince himself it was a better idea to put it outside her door and run to Syd’s car and tell her to drive.

It’s too late now though an he fidgets with the small, poorly wrapped canvas. He’d been working on it for a while now, he hoped she liked it. He thrusts it out to her as soon as she walks into the room, a large dopey grin on his face. “Merry Christmas, Olivia! Sorry it’s baby shower wrapping paper but it was like...ten cents and I...I made this for you!” He can’t wait for her to take it from him. He wants her to like it so bad he’s half convinced himself she won’t. “Tell me what you think!” (X)

november 15, right after practice, outside of the locker rooms, the foxhole court @itsoliviafinch​

More and more lately, they were becoming aware of just how their approach to being here wasn’t working. Keeping everyone at an arms length was only hurting all of them, how could they be part of a team if they wouldn’t accept it, after all? So they intended to do better starting now. It had been too long since they had caught up with Olivia one on one, which they regretted, considering a lot of the time it felt like she was one of the only people here that could truly understand what it felt like to go through all of the things they had, even if their situations were very different. It was probably a little selfish, then, that now was the time they decided to change that, try to do better, but they had a feeling that they weren’t the only one dealing with a lot of internal conflict over the way things were going.

After practice, Casey made a point of lingering around, going a little bit slower than they necessarily needed to in the hopes of catching her before she left. They hadn’t been waiting long before she appeared around the corner, and they offered her a warm smile in greeting.

“Hey, that was a really smart play at the end of practice. Can I pick your brain, or is it more of a watch and learn deal?”

Grant’s lost before. Hell, he’s lost to the Ravens year after year, and for a while, he thought he might almost be used to it.  It’s a reality of this team, and he knows that. It was easier to shake off last year, at least, because no matter how bruising a defeat seemed then, there was always the possibility of another chance. Another year. 

That’s not true anymore. Now, they’re nearly halfway through the first semester with only a single win to show for it, and no matter how much he wants to ignore it, this might be his last semester playing as a Fox. If they can’t make it to the Spring Championships, he’ll be done—because there isn’t going to be another chance after this season. Not for him, at least, not with this team. 

He’d dreamed of finishing this year strong, bringing the Foxes all the way across the finish line of the Championships. This season is supposed to be the culmination of all he’s worked for since freshmen year, but it could just as easily end with a whimper, not a bang. If they don’t turn things around, this will be another easily forgotten season—and that will make him an easily forgotten captain. An easily forgotten player. Not the person who gets recruited at the end of the year.

Predictably, with all those anxieties, he sleeps like shit the night after the game. Grant wakes up even before his earliest alarm, and despite the fact that this was supposed to be a rest day after last night’s game, Grant laces his sneakers and goes out for a run anyway. 

It’s dead quiet on Perimeter Road, especially when the sun hasn’t quite risen, and he focuses on the sound of his breathing and his shoes hitting pavement. He’s sore all over still, and Grant goes slowly at first, easing his muscles into it—and stops for a break sooner than he’d like, because despite the voice telling him to push himself fasterbettermore, Grant knows he can’t overdo it today. 

There’s another shape in the low-level morning light too, and Grant recognizes Olivia easily enough. There are plenty of transfers on the team this year, but she’s from Penn State—so maybe he purposefully slowed to a stop here, near her, and maybe he can hear Zia’s voice now, asking him to check in on her old friend when he can. So, Grant clears his throat. “You’re up early.”
