Eurovision 2018: My Top 4

So far, four out of the 43 countries have revealed their songs: Albania, Czech Republic, France, and Spain. These are not exactly official songs since no selected entries are official until the HoD meeting in March. We have a good fair share of songs and every song revealed makes me more anticipating for the contest.

So without further ado, here are my onions:

4. Eugent Bushpepa - Mall (ALBANIA)

To me, this song doesn’t quite fit my tastes. It’s a little flat to me, but props to Eugent for deciding to leave the song in Albanian - the last Albanian entry that was sung in Albanian was 2013. Also props to Albania for breaking the solo female power ballad streak. Soft rock for me is a hit or miss for me, and this is a miss. Sorry Eugent, I just found the other three songs better!!

3. Amaia & Alfred - Tu Canción (SPAIN)

Where my Malo at???? Anyways, It’s been a while since a Eurovision song has actually made me fall asleep, but this entry might be it, sadly. Catch me taking a three minute power nap or  a commercial break when this performs, because boy, it is a snoozer. The only reason I saved this from fourth is because the song is cute. Not Naviband cute, but cute. Once more songs come out, this song will probably be slipping and dropping in my ranking, but for now, it’s my 3rd.

2. Mikolas Josef - Lie to Me (CZECH REPUBLIC)

Oh great, I’m at the song everyone in the fandom likes to polarize: everyone either likes this song or hates this songs. I am on the side of ‘Like’ for this song. The instrumental slappes, and as a (former) band student, that jazzy Trumpet goes off!!! At first listen, I thought it was a saxophone haha. I’m glad they went with a jazzy trumpet instead of a saxophone tbh, although it wouldn’t make a difference if one replaced the other. One thing I don’t like about this song is the lyrics. They grammatically don’t make sense in some parts and the ones that do are as generic as they get. I also don’t like the pre chorus where his voice pitch goes low, it’s uncomfortable for me to hear. If you think about it it kinda sounds like a wannabe Melfest entrant - I can definitely see this as an entry competing in Melodifestivalen.

Since this is the only internally selected song of the four revealed, I’m interested to see how the live performance will look - I expect a camel. Hopefully the performance really captures the essence of the song. Maybe, just maybe, Czechia will qualify for the second time?

1. Monsieur Madame - Mercy (FRANCE)

Not gonna lie, there were better songs in Destination Eurovision (Lisandro Cuxi wya??), but this song somewhat grew to me. I’m in looooove with french pop! The ‘Madame’ of Monsieur Madame’s voice is very enchanting to hear. I really like the song near the end, and in the performance, with everyone’s one hand going up and down with the beat. Either this song will place in the top 10 or in the bottom 10, no in between. This song is definitely a dark horse. However, despite what I’ve said about this song, it’s better than the other three, thus its place in the ranking. Hopefully Monsieur Madame’s live performance gets an amp up, because what I saw at DE was a little ehhh.

Aight, so hopefully you agree with my onions, but if you dont, you’re still valid. Music is subjective and not everyone will agree. So far these songs slap and I’m so excited for Eurovision 2018!
