Can we all just agree on how much of an unfair double standard we have going on in the anime fandom community that Narancia, the yangire mafioso whose psychotic tendencies are completely out of his own free will (no Hinamizawa syndrome (or other diseases), brainwashing, or split personalities to blame), has those same tendencies glossed over by the vast majority of fan portrayals whilst Rena Ryuugu, the cutesy yangire schoolgirl whose insanity mostly (if not only) caused by/comes out during Higurashi arcs where she does get the Hinamizawa Syndrome, is almost entirely known for those psychotic tendencies?
I agree that it is completely unfair.
It's why I almost exclusively read yandere fics when it comes to Narancia, because it's (usually, depending on how the authors choose to write him in the AU) more aligned with his canon behaviour. I mean for fucks sake, I like the scary mafia guy who has so much fun torturing people he dances! That's who I wanna read in my x reader stuff!
The same reason I read almost exclusively dark content for a lot of my favourite characters, actually.
Listen. There is no way in hell Melone can afford to take me dress shopping at the mall, and then go watch a movie in theatres with snacks, and still have a nice dinner date. There is no fucking way.
I'm ripping this calculation from DanPlanks on Reddit but: "Lire is an obsolete currency, being abandoned around the time the part takes place. The final conversion rate was about $1 USD = around 1695 lire. Meaning our squadra was being paid around $11799 per assassination. If they split it between each other evenly 11799/9=1311 per person."
And it's basically commission work, that is not $1311 every week, that is 1311 every time they do a hit. Which is anywhere from once a month (let's be real it is the mafia it's not like they've got huge dry spells on killing people... But it's not like the other members aren't capable of killing people anyways. From Diavolo's perspective, having an assassination team is redundant. Maybe that's why he stiffed their pay?).
Conclusion: Melone, my dear, my love, my sick fuck, is broke. And honestly, he's a bit of a freak, kidnapping you is probably the most sexual fun he's had all year. Considering his stand correlates to him being a rapist, that is... An impressive feat you've got yourself.
And Narancia is fucking unhinged, let my boy be unhinged, please.
I think another reason why maybe Jojo is more "Uwu precious baby" and Higurashi When They Cry is more "what a SCARY girl with a SCARY DISEASE she literally KILLS PEOPLE 0A0" is because jojo is marketed as more of a bloody action franchise, and Higurashi When They Cry is marketed as more of a horror anime.
Action fans are going to ignore the moment their protagonists are scary because it's framed narratively as something good, even badass! Check out the James Bond fans, or Jurassic Park World fans. Who cares when the protagonist is doing something shitty, illegal, and downright torture so long as it's done to the bad guysTM.
Meanwhile, in horror, the whole appeal is the fucked-up-ish-ness of it all. So if a character goes ballistic while infected with a disease, that's all anyone cares about because "Whooo! Yeah baby! That's what I've been waiting for-- that's what it's all about!".
You are right that it's unfair. I can't speak more about Rena Ryuugu because I don't know her character very well, but we NEED to make Narancia more sadistic in fanfics.
