splatoon collectable figure/stop motion puppet/mockup/unrealistic concept thing?

(test renders with ingame hair meshes cause I was too lazy to model ones for these images)

I was looking at those super high quality hot toys superhero figures and also laika animation puppets and im also in a splatoon mood. So for fun i wanted see how I could mishmash those ideas together into a sorta mockup deluxe splatoon figure concept with changeable faces, hair, etc

I attempted to make the arms/hands/limbs look like molded silicone like how a lot of stop motion puppets handle skin and other flexible pieces, so its very unrealistic in terms of like a mass produced item. Wanted to give it a shot anyways!

The different face parts would be connected by pegs, and the ears would be connected by magnets, so you'd be able to swap them out with different expressions, and even swap between inkling and octoling. Kinda like how the inkling figmas sell 2 inkling sets, I'd imagine these would include a set of inkling gear and octoling gear for each wave

also idk how the eyebrows would work. magnets??

Easily the most entertaining part was modeling the inside of the face/head for when you swap out the face plates. Super inspired by how Coraline's puppet armature looks

was really hoping to be able to do some cool stop motiony stuff with these, but I think im gonna be putting them on the backburner for now since blender cloth sim isn't really built for stop motion stuff, and i don't really feel like going through and making clothing with drivers and tension maps for absolutely every scenario so uh yeah

Final fest idea future-present-past

I know that a lot of people have said this already but this is what I think they will do/ what I would do.

Future/Present/Past

I know that it sounds backwards but Shiver is def more future and I would switch Frye and Big man but future/past/present sounds worse but that would be the ideal team for me.

Future- 1. next gen, like if the current idols were to have kids, it would be them, or at the very least kids their age. We could see adult donny and shelly, Harmony could be older, this is self indulgent but I would be down for a pearlina child (besides 8). I dont know what the story would be, maybe something to do with the zapfish again but someone new, it could be more about the metro, but idk how that would work exactly. It could also be virtual… idk. 2. Far into the future. Squid sisters, off the hook, deep cut, they are all legendary, but many many many idols have taken their role since then. Captain 3 is nearing the cuttlefish's age. Its a completely new cast with only mentions of long times ago when these idols were in their prime/alive. This woul dbe great for a new species, as octos have been basically fully integrated and not a new group is the minority(the cycle continues and such).

Present- 1. More of what we have. We see all the idols again, maybe not as big but they are all existing, doing something in the world. We would probably see the zapfish get taken again, similar formula but basically what theyve been doing, maybe we get 4 idols, new species maybe? Idk but you get the idea. 2. Same time period, different part of the world. We could have oth world tour mentioned, maybe instead of squids and octos, this city is a whole different species, like we could get sharks or vampire squids, probably in addition to the pre existing squids and octos though. But this would be a great opportunity for more species to be added without having to be like “oh they escaped/ are being integrated” again. The story could be basically anything, it could be something to go with the other species history, or maybe it can play into the second place, like if future wins then it is about planning, if its past then maybe more on the history, but it takes place right around now.

Past- 1. Octarian soldier. I would say squidbeak, but there is only so much you can do with Callie and Marie, you would need to retroactively add a whole agent… yeah. I think this could be sick, we could have to fight inklings, we can have Mariana come back, een some agent 8 references. I think that the goal would either be to get out of the octarian society or like be an elite. Maybe this is where they could make choices you make change the story… but that might be a bit ambitious for splatoon. I can still hope. 2. The past past. Like og squidbeak splatoon. You are in a war with the octarians, or inklings. Maybe we get 2 story modes. Who knows. But this takes place long before the squid sisters, gramps isnt even a father yet. We could see how they got to the separation, we would have skinny jude. The hud would be kind of bornign but I would king of pokemon legends arceus, we could wven have other characters ancestors show up and stuff. 3. Like before inklings and octolings were fully humanoid. Like this is crazy unrealistic and they would be starting from scratch but it would be sick for them to be like “ok we are going back to prehistoric times, no new hair styles, no current gear, you dont even have the news, you have to read everything on scrolls.” like that would probably sink the franchise but you have to admit, it they really went through with it that takes balls

How do you think inkfish 'hair' grows? I can't imagine it working anything like hair follicles, but considering there's different hairstyle lengths it must grow over time as mammalian hair does. Same with Cuttlefish's beard- do the individual tentacles just sprout from the skin, then merge together over time? (The extra short inkling cut weirds me out, since its just a solid 'mat' of tentacle material...)

Inkfish hair does grow over time, but not infinitely like human hair. Inkfish "hair" are basically limbs after all, and they have a preset maximum length that varies based on species and genetics, mostly. On average, Squids have pretty short head tentacles (minus the hunting tentacles, which are more prehensile) and Octopuses typically have much longer ones. The easiest way to monitor tentacle length if you want them to be shorter is to cut them short, which is how most Octolings get their shorter tentacle styles. The tentacles will always grow tips back before they slowly begin regrowing in length, which is how you get hairstyles with very short tentacles. (And for the SUPER short tentacle styles, you need to be shaving the nubs off too...)

As for the positioning of the tentacles on the head I would like to have an answer for you but there's just none. I am dumbfounded. Logically it would be obvious that tentacles have a root and are connected to the brain and evenly split across the head for optimal, well, existence, given that they are Meat and they Do Things. But no, seemingly magically inkfish tentacles can be in any random arrangement on the top of their head, or not even on the top, judging by Cuttlefish who has a BALD HEAD and a BEARD instead.

It is unclear whether there is insane genetic variety on what exact part of your head your tentacles will grow and you just have to hope that they grow in the arrangement you want for the hairstyle you want and some styles are out of your reach forever. It seems more likely that the position of the tentacles can be changed, given that inkfish literally DO THAT every time they switch form, but that's also much more unrealistic than them just having natural variety. It's like if a werewolf turned back into a human and now its arms are on the back of the body for funsies instead of being on the sides. This has been ruining my life since Splatoon 2 came out and I hope we get like, answers on inkfish haircuts some time soon because they keep getting more and more insane and making less sense.

On the topic of beards I literally hate that inkfish get beards. There is ZERO reason to have extra tentacles sprouting from the front of the face to obscure the beak. In the wild these wouldn't have been cut most likely. Hell, in the modern day, CAN YOU shave? Because again, THAT'S MEAT. If you're growing a whole tentacle out of your face not only is that muscle (does it anchor into your beak musculature?) but if it's multiple, your face is now full of tentacle mass that should be on your head. Even humans when we shave don't actually REMOVE the facial hair, we just cut it extremely short so it's less visible. How does an inkfish shave? It would always leave a meat slab behind with a white cut surface and grow back as nubs. It wouldn't just peel off like an orange peel when you take a razor to it, tentacles are muscle.

This all on top of it usually literally being EXTRA TENTACLES because you can have a beard while you already have the correct amount of head tentacles. Like okay maybe inkfish just evolved to sprout some additional extra tentacles on their face over time to look pretty, since the head tentacles are decorative as is. But why in the middle of the face. Why there where it obscures everything and is probably impossible to remove fully because as TENTACLES, which are (for the billionth time) MEAT, they are fully attached to the rest of your flesh and wouldn't just peel or pluck off. Congrats on your flesh beard you're stuck with it forever and it has no evolutionary purpose and whether you get one and what it looks like is completely random.

READ THE WHOLE THING AND STOP TAKING WHAT I SAY OUT OF CONTEXT

I am sad because I keep seeing posts that I'm pretty sure are targeted at me saying "excusing things is the same as enabling them" when I havent excused anything. Here are the arguments tonight

Marina having her skin lightened- my opinion: bad, but there are other things to worry about (but we can all agree the fork vs spoon splatfest was some bad shit)

The splatoon figma- my opinion: bad, like holy shit a full 50 shades darker (pun very out of place but intended I guess?), but I have seen posts directly stating that I excuse it and dont care. I will not stand for libel and slander

Marina being oversexualized- my opinion: bad, and actually no hate on this one it's pretty simple, she wears an impractical amount of clothing and nintendo has done that to urbosa and an arms character I cant remember as well, so that sucks ass

The whitewashing of japanese media- now this one gets iffy. As I've stated multiple times, and I will stand by this, it is an absolute fact, 98% of the japanese population is in fact, japanese. Yes some people are dark skinned japanese, but they arent exactly common. No, I am not excusing whitewashing, I am saying that we have to judge japanese products by japanese cultural standards. In American products where every person is white, that is inexcusable, america is an incredibly diverse country and that's unrealistic and very insensitive (I wont say racist because sometimes its unintentional, y'know? You've written a bunch of characters and you look up and go, oh shit they're all white, but the show already aired or smth) Also, we should really come up with a new term since whitewashing a cast with Japanese characters isnt "white"washing, per se

Headcanon A:  realisticpearl doesn’t really get it when people talk about short/tall preferences. sometimes it seems like she doesn’t see herself as short at all. in reality she just doesn’t care!

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilariouswhen she joined the music industry everyone assumed that she was going to sing very cutely, but she surprised everyone with a rap solo that still blew everyone away! (she practiced in secret on her own because she loves rap)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friendsmarina is her first and best friend, and they’re both ride or die for each other! (i know its not very sad but……….listen…………..)

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.marina absolutely dragged pearl to a lotr marathon and pearl………loved it. marina regrets this because pearl wont stop making raps over the soundtrack. theyre really good but………..god………….
