"you wouldn't be my family. you'd be m'lady" spoken from gendry to arya was never supposed to be romantic. it's supposed to highlight how much hurt and trauma gendry has had to suffer or watch people suffer from the treatments they received at the hands of those of noble birth and having had his status as lowborn or bastard or an orphan ( with essentially no money ) always be embed into his knowledge as being lower than that of high society when?? they've done basically nothing but exist. it definitely isn't arya's fault to want gendry as a companion, but it isn't wrong for gendry to assume that, had he followed arya, his worth wouldn't be any different in the traditional north than it was in king's landing. if he'd followed her, he really couldn't be her family—he's lowborn. he would be serving her, thus, m'lady.
#i would say there is still a lot within the context u must consider#bc the brotherhood was - in comparison - giving gendry a chance to not be any station lower than them#which appealed to him as someone who got the short end of the stick status-wise#so it makes sense why its easier for him to choose to stay instead of following arry#but yes. ive always been a bit :// when i see fandoms or shippers simplified that scene#because its LARGER than it is. its all the hurt and trauma and suffering gendry had endured#its the bias he can never quite understand he received simply bc hes born in the wrong side of society#i love that line from newsies where jack said : ''there ain't no crime in being poor.'' because it rlly isnt#but its treated like it is -- isn't it ?#gendry.#gendry; headcanons.
