midnight kotlc doodles and thoughts
how do you make friends here i would love to make kotlc mutuals but im feeling a little shy :3c
ANYWAY so i was thinking about fitz and itd be plot-wise kind of funny and evil if he was fighting the neverseen for example and one of his ear got cut off on the helix so he cant grow it pointy anymore -- and if his ears cant get pointy, then appearance-wise, he's just a human right
itd be so good for character development like symbolizing him maybe finding himself outside of being an elf, a vacker, etc. and more who he is as a person
but honestly i dont care about keefe nor fitz i care about the GIRLIES i care about biana and sophie and linh and marella and etc. mwah my kotlc girls
my personal headcannon is that biana grows up to become a wedding planner for elves?? or like a general events planner arranging parties and winnowing galas bc thatd be cute
itd also suit her like imagine her having her fashion sense and taste and not making it a part of her job and being a boring emissary or something thatd kill me inside. but then maybe she also faces backlash for not puting her talent as a vanisher into use and rendering it "useless" but her not giving a fuck bc biana's like that
but then i feel like sophie would actually become an emissary or a keeper for the council - i mean shes a reagent already so whats stopping the council from snatching her up after foxfire graduation (bruh are they even going to be able to graduate at this pace)
and speaking of foxfire graduation are you telling me these elves live up to thousands and thousands of years and their education stops at like 20?? naur they probably do have some higher education right so what if theres like vocational schools but for special abilities -- imagine a school for technopaths and they just all train to become elvin engineers (EIT -- Elf Institution of Technology LMAO)
#kotlc#kotlc fanart#kotlc thoughts#kotlc fandom#kotlc art#biana vacker#fitz vacker#sophie foster#kotlc sophie#kotlc fitz#kotlc biana#MIT MORE LIKE EIT#i bet they have a school for telepaths too#but what would they do with that#wait a minute when can telepaths actually use their abilities if they decide not to become an elite or a noble#its so highly regulated that you cant use it in your day to day life#lmao

50 Spiritual Awakening Quotes Celebrating Enlightenment
These spiritual awakening quotes will inspire self-improvement and long-term positive change.
Spiritual awakening involves moving beyond your limited reality and gaining a broader and clearer perspective. When you make the shift to a higher level of consciousness, you become more aware of reality as it exists beyond the confines of the self.
Having a spiritual awakening leads to self-realization and a well-adjusted existence. It leads you to a blissful and content life. No matter the circumstances of your life, you’ll enjoy a stress-free natural existence.
Just like a butterfly emerges from its cocoon, when you finally reach that state of spiritual enlightenment, you’ll be able to spread your wings and find your true self and your true path. It will allow you to experience a sense of inner peace, a feeling of purification, and have more compassion and empathy.
Though it can be a painful process as it requires you to make difficult choices on how you move forward and live with your new perspective, once your inner transformation to a higher level of consciousness is complete, you’ll be happy that you went through the whole experience.
To celebrate the shift to higher consciousness, below is our collection of inspirational, wise, and positive spiritual awakening quotes, spiritual awakening sayings, and spiritual awakening proverbs, collected from various sources.
Spiritual awakening quotes celebrating enlightenment
1.) “We are all equally capable of spiritual awakening. It may not seem that way, at times. Some of us are so caught up in the drama of our day-to-day existence that we have lost track of who we really are. But eventually, all of us will make the discovery of our true nature.” – Victor Shamas
2.) “You are heir to a heavenly fortune, the sole beneficiary of an infinite spiritual trust fund, a proverbial goldmine of sacred abundance beyond all common measure or human comprehension. But until you assert your rightful inheritance of this blessed gift, it will remain unclaimed and forever beyond your reach.” – Anthon St. Maarten
3.) “We are not the only ones affected by our recovery. The spiritual awakening heals the world one person at a time.” – Marta Mrotek
4.) “You have to grow from the inside out. None can teach you, none can make you spiritual. There is no other teacher but your own soul.” – Swami Vivekananda
5.) “Maturity is the ability to think, speak and act your feelings within the bounds of dignity. The measure of your maturity is how spiritual you become during the midst of your frustrations.” – Samuel Ullman
6.) “It is through gratitude for the present moment that the spiritual dimension of life opens up.” – Eckhart Tolle
7.) “Within you lies opportunity to grow in spirit. Keep your feet on the earth, but lift your face towards the heavens. Surrender to the light with a tranquil mind, and a heart full of the love of God.” – White Eagle
8.) “You can have a spiritual awakening and discover a new side of you at any age. And best of all, love can happen at any age. Life can just start to get exciting when you’re in your 40s and 50s. You have to believe that.” – Salma Hayek
9.) “In the place of stillness, rises potential. From the place of potential, emerges possibility. Where there is possibility, there is choice, and where there is choice, there is freedom!” – Gabrielle Goddard

Spiritual awakening quotes to help you lead a blissful and content life
11.) “Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.” – Buddha

29.) “The purpose of our lives is to give birth to the best that is in us. It is only through our own personal awakening that the world can be awakened. We cannot give what we do not have.” – Marianne Williamson
30.) “Once the soul awakens, the search begins and you can never go back. From then on, you are inflamed with a special longing that will never again let you linger in the lowlands of complacency and partial fulfillment. The eternal makes you urgent. You are loath to let compromise or the threat of danger hold you back from striving toward the summit of fulfillment.”- John O’Donohue
Spiritual awakening quotes to celebrate a higher shift in consciousness and understanding
31.) “Times are difficult globally; awakening is no longer a luxury or an ideal. It’s becoming critical. We don’t need to add more depression, more discouragement, or more anger to what’s already here. It’s becoming essential that we learn how to relate sanely with difficult times. Someday, some way, everything will break open, like the natural unfolding of a rosebud.”- Vernon Howard

Only then do we discover a new capacity and appreciation of goodness and beauty and truth.”- Helen Keller
38.) “The next time you find yourself in some way trying desperately to land safely, your compassion might be what finally gives you the courage you need to let go of the controls. In doing so, you might discover that each time you let go, it becomes easier and easier to re-enter the atmosphere of your own aliveness. Gradually you’ll come home to the flow of your own living presence, the warmth and space of your awakening heart.”- Tara Brach

8 books on the Circular Economy you can't miss
Introduction to books on the Circular Economy
Often, after events, presentations or pitches people will ask me for recommendations on which books to read to build an understanding of the Circular Economy. I have to admit: it’s not easy to break into a field that is as hotly debated and analysed as this one. A fresh topic like the Circular Economy doesn’t have the blessing of a large or diverse library, though the Web is full of free PDFs with all sorts of interesting perspectives and ideas (One of the many reports made by Confindustria here).
But in the last two years, the subject found its feet. Publishing books that summaries and give the reader a good understanding of the entire concept of the Circular Economy, a concept that is at the heart of the battle against: Climate change.
In this article I’ll go over 8 books that explain the Circular Economy in the simplest yet extensive way possible: from an in depth explanation of one part of the Circular Economy to broader more holistic explanations.
1. What is the Circular Economy
The first book on this list is by Emanuele Bompan, journalist, public speaker, and manager of the incredible magazine renewable materials (If you don’t know it definitely take a look, but will get to that later…).So why is this book at the top o the list? I haven’t organized this list in any particular order but I think that this book is the perfect place to start. It’s where I started my journey through the Circular Economy and it’s the book I read over and over again whilst looking for ideas or whilst I was looking for examples of sustainable businesses.
I’ve met Emanuele whilst I was at Ecomondo this year and it was super interesting getting to compare our ideas. Emanuele is without a doubt an expert on the Circular Economy and there are many important titles with his signature on them. It would be an understatement to say that the pages of the book race by: it is an absolute goldmine of information explained in a streamlined and simple way but that still manages to go into great depth. So go grab it!
2. The Circular Economy. From Waste to Resource – Peter Lacy, Jakob Rutqvist and Beatrice Lamonica
The second book that I want to bring your attention to is the milestone from which many great discussions have stemmed. The book written by Peter Lacy, Rutqvist and Lamonica is extremely detailed and is full of good examples of the benefits of the Circular Economy.
The book was highly recommended by Accenture, an important consulting company for strategic management technology and outsourcing, and the home of the three authors. The book defines the 5 famous principles that characterize a business that is a part of the Circular Economy. It has numerous in depth examples that help understand the competitive benefits of the Circular Economy. Without a doubt a book that shouldn’t be missed.
3. A world without trash? A trip through the Circular Economy – A. Massarutto
I’ll admit I only just read this book a few weeks ago, but I think it it really is an interesting read. The research Antonio Massarutto, economist, and professor at the University of Bocconi, explains throughout the book is masterful. It goes into great detail especially on the subject of trash, where the author criticizes our current waste collection and disposal system as well as rethinking the whole thing. Massarutto, like other important authors, he concentrates on what happens to things at the end of their life-cycle, shining a light on what many are starting to realize is a serious problem: Trash. A concept that doesn’t exist in nature where “nothing is made and nothing is destroyed”: A closed loop for both materials and energy. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the problem trash provides and the solution a Circular Economy would provide.
4. Fresh materials in the Circular Economy – A. Pellizzari, E. Genovesi
This entry is more than just one book, this is a whole series of fantastic books. The photo above is just the first of the monumental books on the Circular Economy and the environment published by Ed. Ambiente. (The most active Italian publisher currently on the market with a whole portfolio of interesting reads that is growing every day). Besides “New materials” there is also “Fashion”, “Automotive” and “Packaging”.
Every book covers a specific theme and tells the story of one industry and how to innovate on production and design of products currently in use. Which leads to discussion about bio-based products, which use natural materials that work in the natural environmental cycle or that can be efficiently recycled (End-of-waste).
The volume I chose as an example shows how important the sustainable movement is by using a number of case studies which aren’t necessarily the solution to the problems that many businesses have but they show the obvious advantages of adopting a circular approach for the production of products and services.
It all starts with the use of different materials and the prevention of waste. Innovation starts here. Good Luck!
5. Designing for the Circular Economy – M. Charter
The first book that puts design and Circular Economy together. Applied Eco-design, as told by prof. Martin Charter, director of the centre for sustainable design at the University for Creative Arts (UCA) in England. Dealing with the up-stream of Circular Economics.
Professor Charter covers the topics of design and creativity, in the context of sustainability by using multiple concrete references. Using design and production as a form of prevention to eliminate the problem of disposal is the pioneering strategy in this sector of the Circular Economy (remember the regulations on Eco-design in Europe).
A book that manages to speak to industries, businesses and students that wish to learn more about the topic, and it is for this reason that I recommend you read this book whether as a student or a professional. Because Circular Economics is creativity it is design and above all it is thinking outside the box.
6. Circular Economics for everyone – W. R. Stahel
I can confirm: anyone can read this book. I recommend this book because it shows perfectly the moment the concept of Circular Economics came into existence. like many researchers or public figures might say: The circular Economy is at the beginning of it’s life and so it still needs to find the space it occupies and the concepts it embodies because it is much much more than just recycling which is what most of the general public associate it with.
Stahel works to make each of the fundamental parts of the Circular Economy as simple to understand as possible, making it a very easy to read the whole book, and it was made for just this reason. The author was the man in the seventies to imagine an economy where a products life-cycle is a closed loop, and he analyses the impact it would have on competition on the environment and on society. In the book Stahel, architect and visiting professor of the faculty of engineering and science at the Università of Surrey, in the UK. It explains the steps you have to take to go from small isolated communities of the Circular Economy to a global scale. The revolution therefor has to tackle new problems and create Social and Financial value as well as Environmental value.
After his first book “Jobs for Tomorrow: The Potential for Substituting Manpower for Energy” (1976) that Stahel wrote with Geneviève Reday-Mulvey. Stahel returns to talk about his experiences on the topic to help spread the ideas of the Circular Economy
7. Green Branding: Tools, Advice and Strategies for Eco-sustainable Communication – L. Garosi
Don’t you see the link between marketing and the Circular Economy? That’s why the penultimate book I’m recommending is the perfect guide for a new kind of job: The Green Marketer. The guy that takes care of sustainable projects and how to market them. The book is a literal tutorial, as is the tradition of Daccovio the publishers. A guide to what a Green Marketer should and shouldn’t do and why the position of Green Marketer should exist. Garosi manages to paint a perfect picture of the Green Jobs situation, as well as explore each of the different arguments, thanks to specialists from each of the green industries. From events, to management of social media the book covers everything that anybody who wishes to become a Green manager needs.
8. Renewable materials – Ed. Ambiente
Your right it isn’t a book, but this last recommendation is a real gem I promise. Renewable Materials is the first and (I think) only magazine that covers each of the different pieces of the Circular Economy individually and in great depth. With monthly issues Ed. Ambiente’s magazine goes beyond the national level and conducts research, and innovates on an international level. As well as the interesting ideas of showcased in “Renewable Materials”: there are in depth analyses on each of the fundamentals of the Circular Economy. Written by important authors or researchers as well as the manager Emanuele Bompan who also wrote the first book on this list: “Che cosa è l’Economia Circolare“.

I am looking to get health insurance for a year, more to take care of neglected issues than to cover my butt if I get sick/hurt (I'm 27, betting on youth and good health!). Kaiser seems to be the most appealing because they cover a broader range of services. I am namely interested in physical therapy (winged scapula), dermatology (oily skin/acne), perhaps mental illness services as I have suffered from depression (although I somewhat consider it a problem of my past). I'm aware insurance plans won't cover preexisting conditions, but how can they really prove these issues didn't start yesterday, right? I'm overwhelmed with my choices. Is it worth paying $330/mo for $0 deductible, 0% coinsurance, $40 co pays and a max out of pocket @ $3000? Or is it smarter to pay $166/mo, $2700 deductible, 0% coinsurance, $0 co pays after deductible, and max out of pocket @ $5000 (including deductible)? Etc. Car insurance - What's the car worth?
In the past when ever i've been asked by insurance companies what my car is worth i've always told them the amount that i think i could realisticly sell it for (what its worth? or so i thought) If i was to sell my car i would be able to get around 1200-1300, which is what i would say 'it's worth', HOWEVER, recently after putting my reg number into a price comparison website it automatically came up with a value of just 700. (My car has low milege, fsh and is in v good condition so is worth more than average) So my question is, if i tell them it's worth say 1250, take out their policy and then i write it off, what will they pay? Also, am i paying a higher premium than i should because i'm telling them it's true value instead of their lower valuation? and if so, how many other people are doing this?""

Nevada’s solar workers and customers reel as new rules ‘shut down’ industry
Companies struggle after state imposes highest charges yet on customers, driving firms out of the state and workers out of jobs
The conversation at SolarCitys hollowed-out warehouse in Las Vegas felt like it came after a funeral, and in a sense it did, with workers cycling between sadness, disbelief and anger at the untimely death of the rooftop solar industry.
fixed rate states solar power
The cause, as seen by workers drifting in to clean out their belongings, was state-assisted suicide, after the Nevada regulator imposed costly newrules for residential solar customers.
The decision to replace economic incentives with new higher fees pulled the carpet out from under an industry that provided 8,700 jobs in the state last year, according to the Solar Foundation, and stranded some 17,000 homeowners who have already gone solar with a financial liability on their rooftops.
Three companies, including SolarCity, announced they were quitting the state, laying off about 1,000 workers.
Everyone in this warehouse was let go, 550 people across the valley, said Chandler Gray, who lost his job as an installations inspector for SolarCity.
The havoc turned solar panels into a hot topic for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton ahead of the Nevada caucuses on 20 February.
Call it the solar wars. From Arizona to California to Florida and now Nevada, states are struggling to reconcile residential solar with its promise to give homeowners greater independence while fighting climate change with highly centralised business models of the electricity industry.
California and a number of other states eventually defeated efforts by energy companies and corporate lobby groups to claw back incentives for solar customers.
Three companies, including SolarCity, announced they would leave the state following the new rules. Photograph: Jacob Kepler for the Guardian
Now Nevada has raised the stakes, levying the highest charges to date and breaking with convention to impose those charges on existing customers as well as new ones.
The solar showdown pits Elon Musk, the electric car billionaire and cofounder of SolarCity, against Warren Buffett, owner of the states monopoly electricity provider NV Energy.
The new rules, confirmed on 12 February, raised the monthly fees to solar customers from $12.75 to $38.51 over 12 years while dramatically cutting back the rates that customers were paid earlierfor feeding surplus power back into the grid from about 11 cents a kilowatt hour to about two cents.
Homeowners who are suing NV Energy in a class action estimate the new rates add 40% to their monthly bills, while reducing the amount they get paid for the solar energy their panels produce by 18%.
SolarCitys warehouse was still plastered with posters advertising the infinite power of the sun but the companys power to change the residential roofline of Nevada cities was, for the moment, gone.
opposition solar power nevada
Orders stopped the moment the new rules came out, Gray said.
Until the axe fell, SolarCity was shipping up to 1,600 solar systems a week from this and one other warehouse in southern Nevada. It used to be like Raiders of the Lost Ark when you went into this warehouse, he said
It was massive, Gray went on. Then they dropped the bomb.
Gray, who saw SolarCity as an escape from dead-end retail jobs, was let go. So was his partner, who also worked for SolarCity. Our household income was zero for a couple of weeks there, Gray said.
His partner was rehired and Gray hopes he will get taken on too. But for the moment he is looking after their six-year-old son, and campaigning for a ballot initiative to overturn the rules. We are going to fight to bring solar back, and once we do, we will get our jobs back too, he said.
SolarCity is keeping its Las Vegas headquarters in an upscale shopping mall where the glass conference rooms are decorated with the names of island vacation destinations like Aruba and Maui.
But the office will operate mainly as a sales center. Roz Holdens last day arrives on 21 February, after which the top saleswoman plans to put her four-bedroom house on the market and move into a rental just to keep costs down and start hunting for work.
The company offered Holden a job in its call centre or to move her to another state, but neither was a good option for a single mother supporting two daughters who are firmly settled in Las Vegas.
nevada solar power holdout states
Even now, Holden still cant fully believe the good times for solar are over in Nevada. Its unfathomable, she said. We expected some changes this year, but we didnt expect they would shut us down completely. It was quite shocking.
SolarCity arrived in Nevada in 2014, shaking up the market for rooftop solar with a leasing plan that allowed homeowners with good credit ratings to put solar panels on their rooftops with no money down.
The company could barely keep up with demand until 22 December, when the new rules were announced. We literally stopped business within that hour, pulled installs off the roof, finished up the jobs we had within that hour and we were done, Holden said. It pretty much shut down the industry.
Some of their customers were caught in limbo, like Kelly and Charisma Schwarze, whose installation was completed but whose panels have still not been switched on by the electricity company.
The couple had been excited to go solar, once the leasing option put it in their budget. Now I feel like we are being punished for trying to do the right thing, Kelly Schwarze, an independent film-maker, said.
For Mike Stitely, the new rules destroyed the tiny thrill he got each day when he checked the iPad to see how much electricity was being produced from the 16 panels on his roof.
Stitleys wife is still working, at Walmart, but he is retired. He is very worried about higher bills, and selling the house when the stairs become too much. People are going to be scared off, he said.
nevada solar power fightback states
It blows my mind and really upsets me, Stitley said. Its pretty high anxiety. At this time of your life you like to know what is going on.
The public utilities commission (PUC) claims solar customers were not paying their fair share for maintaining the grid. When solar rooftop ratepayers reduce energy consumption with solar generation, they lower their bills at the full retail energy rate, which includes charges not only for fuel costs but also for fixed and demand costs; these fixed and demand costs do not go down simply because the rooftop solar ratepayers consume less energy, Peter Kostes, a spokesman, wrote in an email. Solar rooftop ratepayers are under-paying.
Patricia Farley, a Republican state senator who drafted a bill last year to revise the states solar policies, claimed solar was only for rich people, and that the new rules were fairer for all Nevadans.
We dont see people with lower income putting solar on their homes, Farley said. I think if you looked at who bought solar, you dont really see diversity. You have got people who can afford it, and some of the experts told me the people who cant afford it are paying the difference.
But the new rules struck clean energy advocates and campaign groups as retrograde. Instead of limiting rooftop solar, Nevada should be promoting residential arrays as a means of fighting climate change and diversifying the electricity grid, in case of natural disaster or attack, they argued.
Clinton issued a statement saying it was punitive to change the rules on existing homeowners. Bernie Sanders, who met with solar installers in Reno, said it was just wrong.
Rooftop solar is also likely to figure in next Novembers elections.

This is an existential battle for the future of solar being waged right now in front of regulatory bodies, said Adam Browning, director of the Vote Solar campaign group. It is really about who gets to decide how much solar is installed and who owns it.
Others see the solar wars as an uncomfortable blip on an inevitable energy transition.

Solar was barely on the radar when Louise Helton went into the solar business in 2007, inspired by hearing Bill Clinton describe his vision of Nevada as a Saudi Arabia for solar energy.
She went on to found 1 Sun Solar, offering residential solar installations out of the same shopfront where she runs her electrical contracting and stone tile business.
After the recession hit, landing harder on Las Vegas than other towns, it took until 2011, when the prices of solar panels began coming down, for Helton to get her business up and running.
By Heltons own estimates, she stands to lose about $500,000 a year because of the PUC decision. But she is relatively philosophical about the eventual outcome of the solar wars.
Its sort of the same problem we had to go through when you first had cellphones. Ma Bell wasnt happy, Helton said. It was a disruptive technology that changed industry, that took it from being top-down and inverted that pyramid completely.
It was clear which side was going to win the end, Helton said. And then she picked up her cellphone and smiled.

In our fast-paced society today, we seem to be in a constant struggle to keep up. While the advancement of technology has its benefits, we are now being constantly bombarded with information and feel pressured to connect and respond all the time. As a result, we often feel stressed, overwhelmed, and in a constant state of anxiety.
Maintaining such a frenetic lifestyle is clearly unsustainable for our physical and emotional health. Yet, despite this, we continue to pound at a furious pace to get ahead.
If this describes you and what you are going through, it is time to take a pause and give some attention to the present moment. When we do that we focus at where we are,we tend to gain a better perspective of what we are doing, and enjoy doing it more.
Practicing mindfulness in our daily lives has a lot of benefits. Studies have shown that it improves many facets of our physical and emotional well-being, such as reducing stress, improving learning, memory, emotional regulation, and empathy.
What is Mindfulness and Mindfulness Meditation?
Mindfulness is the psychological process of being fully present in the moment.
When we are being mindful, we are not caught up in our thoughts about the past, the future, or reacting to the things that are happening around us. We become fully aware of what we are directly experiencing in the moment through our senses, and our state of mind through our thoughts and feelings.
In order to be mindful, we need to first acknowledge our thoughts without judging them
Practicing mindfulness does not mean that we are actively trying to stop thinking. It involves noting and accepting our thoughts and feelings as it is – without judging them or trying to change them. For example, if we are feeling irritated with our friend that he or she is late, we note these feelings of irritation and then let it be. We do not ‘judge’ these feelings as right or wrong, or react based on these feelings by behaving angrily.
Believe it or not, being mindful is a basic human ability
This ability to be fully present is something that we all naturally possess. It is easier to be fully in the moment when we are doing something that we enjoy, such as when we are listening to music or watching a movie. However, we tend to get caught up in the default mode of worrying, reacting, and feeling overwhelmed when we are in the day to day.
Mindfulness meditation is the perfect way to cultivate mindfulness
In order to get away from all the distractions and regain mindfulness,we need to intentionally set aside time to practice being fully present in the moment. Mindfulness meditation is the formal practice of mindfulness. The intention of practice is to help us regain stillness and mindfulness in places where there is no distraction. The more we practice, we will become better at intentionally being mindful when we are going through our day to day life.
My Story on Mindfulness Meditation and How it has Changed My Life
After hearing so much about the benefits of mindfulness meditation, I decided to give it a try. After all, a number of very remarkable individuals (i.e. Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Ariana Huffington and Lebron James) have all incorporated meditation as an essential part of their daily routine. I was intrigued, and very curious about what mindfulness meditation can do for me.
My first few attempts at meditation were frustrating. Given that I had read so much about its wonderful benefits, I initially expected to feel different immediately. I had concerns that I was not doing it correctly, and did not know what exactly to expect. It took a lot of perseverance and willpower to continue making it a daily practice, since I could not see any positive benefits right away.
The first time I noticed that my meditation practice had any impact on my life was when I was stuck in traffic and running late for a work meeting. Normally, I would have gotten quite frustrated and irritable, even though it was technically my fault for leaving house late.
To my surprise, I kept my calm throughout the ride. I was aware that being irritated and frustrated would not help the situation. Hence, I consciously made the decision to focus on being in the present moment, and had a enjoyable conversation with the Uber driver. I gradually started noticing the same pattern when I was faced with other unpleasant experiences. I had become better at managing my negative emotions, and it has also helped me greatly in managing my anxiety in my day to day life.
Mindfulness meditation is something that gets easier with practice. Every time we meditate, we build new neural pathways in our brain that helps us process our thoughts and emotions better.
If you are new to mindfulness meditation, here are some of the tips that helped me through my practice
Technology can help you become more mindful too
If you are new to mindfulness meditation, using a guided meditation app such as Headspace, Breathe, or Calm, is a good way to start. Headspace offers a free 10-day guided meditation program for beginners, which gives you a really good introduction to what mindfulness and mindfulness meditation is.
Don’t obsess over doing it ‘correctly’
As a beginner, you may have some concerns about what the right way to meditate is. Meditation is a highly personal practice, and there is no ‘correct’ way of doing it. Take your time to find out what seating or lying postures work best for you, and your ideal environment and time of the day for meditating.
Feel it until you make it
It is okay if you do not know what to expect, or if your experience of meditation is different from mine. You may also experience a different impact of meditation on your life. What is most important is that you return to the practice day after day, whether you had a positive session or not.
Have you ever tried mindfulness meditation? If you have, share with us how has it impacted your life?

My Presentation
My presentation and the main concept of my final major project is looking at the negative effects of a camera, that intrudes privacy and dehumanises people, and how it has changed society. Photography has always had a lot of ethical gray areas, and Im interested in what makes people react differently to photographs, why some are seen as okay but others aren't. In what situations is a camera appropriate but in others not, and how the use of a camera has affected our generation and its authenticity.
One influence for this topic is my interest in photojournalism, Photojournalism is the practicing of communicating news by photographs, and is always providing reasons for controversy as images are often explicit. I want to look at what distinguishes between an images been ok, and not ok.
These images here are from the same time, September 2015, when the refugee crisis was at the height of every news story and we were inundated with new stories every day. The image on the right was a massive influence on the way that people responded to the crisis, as it was so shocking, and really resonated with people on a personal level. However, there was a large outcry after this image was published as many found it too explicit and tragic to be on our front covers. But it was the truth and it made people change, so why wasnt it ok to be published? It differs greatly to the image on the left, whose colour is edited and which has a dreamy depth of field, the subjects look happy, and its portrayed to look joyful and beautifully photographed - which is a completely fake portrayal of the refugee crisis. It makes me wonder if we only want to see edited versions of lives, because real life images are never accepted graciously.
This image by Stanley Forman is from 1975, but raised the same kind of issues. It was again published on the front cover of a newspaper titled Fire Escape Collapse, and went on to win awards for World Press Photo of the Year and a Pulitzer Prize. However the children were in fact falling to their death and so there was outrage at the image being so highly commended as it was argued by many that it takes away the dignity of ones human death. Many wrote to the newspaper expressing their feelings yet the editor defended the photographer in a statement that concluded:
“I recognize that printing pictures of corpses raises all sorts of problems about taste and titillation and sensationalism; the fact is, however, that people die. Death happens to be one of life’s main events. And it is irresponsible — and more than that, inaccurate — for newspapers to fail to show it, or to show it only when an astonishing set of photos comes in over the Associated Press wire. Most papers covering fatal automobile accidents will print pictures of mangled cars. But the significance of fatal automobile accidents is not that a great deal of steel is twisted but that people die. Why not show it? That’s what accidents are about. Throughout the Vietnam War, editors were reluctant to print atrocity pictures. Why not print them? That’s what that was about. Murder victims are almost never photographed; they are granted their privacy. But their relatives are relentlessly pictured on their way in and out of hospitals and morgues and funerals.”
in addition to this, the idea of editing what we put into the public eye has swung so far in the opposite direction that these days, outside of the news, almost nothing we see is real.
photographers whose subjects are celebrities, or better known papparazi, have been at the root of many disasters. The word paparazzi derives from the word pappataci, which is italian for small mosquito, suggesting that a paparazzi is an annoying buzzing creature. It then entered the english language and refers to an intrusive photographer. They are responsible for the most widely seen images we have in contemporary culture, and whilst not ideal, its true that they make thousands of pounds or dollars from a single image. They inhabit a weird form of postmodern journalism thats seen as both despicable and a part of the media we indulge in. They have a history of invading the privacy of celebrities, whether its waiting outside their homes or sneaking into their hotel rooms. Perhaps the most extreme case of paparazzi torment is that surrounding Princess Dianas death. A leading theory suggests that the reason her taxi driver was going so fast was to escape a following photographer. This was a particularly serious case, and although some regulations were changed after this incident, ((including that legally ‘Journalists must not engage in intimidation, harassment or persistent pursuit.’, )) its still a very big part of todays culture. However, whilst for some its an invasion of privacy, for others its their money maker. Certain celebrities who are famous for they lifestyle, what they wear, who their with, and what their doing, they rely on these images taken to keep their fanbase updated on their movements and therefore cant have much say in stopping it from happening. So its difficult to stop a culture such as this as for some it may be torment, but for others, its their job.
Further on from this, and my last point into exploring the intrusive sides of a camera, is the devices that we use them on. Im not sure if any of you saw this article, where a photographer created a series of photos of people engaging in their phones, but edited them out of the picture to show the true reality of what was happening. This caused a lot of reaction and showed the harsh reality that we forget day to day of how people are so absorbed in their phones that they dont engage with people. The photographer, Eric Pickersgill, created a short video explaining his series, which to conclude is about how we kind of notice, but tend not to act upon these addictions. He also mentions how its easy for him to photograph people on their phones, as they dont notice him. As a photographer myself I can relate to this, as if photographing people, you know its safe to capture someone who is on their phone, as they wont see you. But it also can make you feel slightly uncomfortable, as I more often than not now, almost feel bad for taking a photo, as I feel like theres a line between just enjoying an experience, and capturing it on your phone. (And i barely even take photographs of anything anymore because i want to enjoy the moment.) We've seen this before however, at concerts perhaps, where people barely watch or join in with the performances because they are filming it all on their phone. We have come to a day and age where people are so infatuated by their phones that they almost don't even know whats going on around them anymore. Its become part of our culture, to spend any spare time we may have, endlessly scrolling and looking at photos. We are exposed to a greater amount of worldwide information than we ever have been, as we have such great access to photos of people and places from all over the world. This is great, as people are travelling more than ever, and using this source as a way of maintaining contact with people from all over the world, however it can sometimes be a little overwhelming just how much we are exposed to. Its said that the average mobile phone user checks their phone around 200 times a day, and in a survey of college students 94% said they would feel troubled if they didn't have their phone with them. As a generation we are addicted and we are constantly posting or taking some kind of photo or video. I really want to explore the effects that this has on people, on authenticity, their relationships and their actions, as well as their feelings. My main concentration would be in fact authenticity, as I very much feel like as someone who doesn't really have any specific career path in mind, it can feel quite daunting to watch what everyone else is doing in their lives, and appearing successful on their social media platforms, and to see how authentic people really are these days, and how much is influenced by what they see everyone else doing. I have a theory that if we weren't exposed to as much information as we are, of other peoples lives, and lived in a generation such as our parents, many of us would be doing very different things. I think we would be more concentrated on purely what we like doing, as opposed to what other people like and what we feel we should. I also think that this mobile technology has really altered our expectations of reality, and Im going to explore the ways in which it has, and what we would potentially be like without these cameras after all.
